Only tried this place a few months back and so glad we did. Great range of food - always great serve and flavour - hubby has been looking for crispy noodles for so long and he loves the ones here - I love the black bean spare rib noodle soup great punchy flavour. Prawn spring rolls are awesome (thin and with actual prawn and not filled out with random stuff like a lot of rolls are) - veggie and normal fried rice is great too. Def a great staple to put on rotation for family take away.
Owners very friendly too they deserve the support especially now during COVID-19
Classic Malay Chinese owner run restaurant. Used to work around here a decade ago and things haven't changed a bit (thankfully) and still visit here when I'm in the area. Huge menu with all the goodies you would expect from good Malay Chinese. Fish curry, lamb stew, crab stir fry all killer dishes but I love their fish fillet vermicilli. Soup is brilliant, perfect pickled vegetables balance with shredded ginger and tomato. This place is old school... From service, table settings, atmosphere and amazing food. This place won't win any hipster awards but it's gained a huge family cult following... Highly recommended
Good casual Chinese restaurant. Went there and tried their Chinese New Year menu. They serve a great yee sang (traditional new year dish).
Also on their new year menu is whole barramundi, pork shank, prawns with noodles, stuffed chicken roll and assorted mushrooms. Mud crab is also on the menu however on this evening it was unavailable.
Staff were efficient and friendly.
A South Yarra icon. Been coming here for years. From grabbing some comfort food to take away after a tough day to a big feast to celebrate something. Quality never drops along the way. Tofu is still the best in Melbourne
Impeccable meal, honestly perfect service and such friendly staff. Such a pleasant dinner experience and was packed for a Thursday night. Nothing that I can fault. Loved the yummy food and will definitely be coming back.
Very authentic Malaysian Food. Service is good and prompt. Ordered Salt and pepper chicken spare rib and curry veggie for lunch. Both dishes are very tasty. Will visit again
The best Chinese-Malaysian in this area for sure! The food comes out quick, and the quality is always amazing. I always go here with my family, and the large menu never disappoints. Would certianly recommend. (Book on a busy night)
What a feast we had at Red Hot Wok! The venue is clean and tidy, and of moderate size with quite a few large tables for big groups. We had a big table of about 8 people and ordered the large bak kut teh, XO pippies, sambal kang kung and ladyfingers, apple chicken, Red Hot Wok special tofu, and of course... the Singapore Chilli Crab with noodles.
Amazingly, all the food came out within about 10 minutes! And we devoured it all in about half an hour... every single dish was flavourful, authentic (they got the tick from all Malaysian friends), fresh and absolutely delicious. Not a scrap of food could be seen on a dish after we had been done with out meal.
The best part? The meal was SO easy on the wallet!
Tidy venue, great service, amazing food... what more do you need from a restaurant? If you are after an authentic Malaysian meal I highly recommend you check them out!
Wandered past this place and was excited to see a Malaysian restaurant in South Yarra. Was excited to see they sold Singaporean Chilli Crab, and seriously this did not disappoint. I booked a table for 7, the food arrived promptly and was super delicious!!
A place for local people, recommend visiting with great service and excellent food.
I recommend bat kuh teh, singaporean chilli crab with noodles and the sambal veges. I’ll be back to try more on the menu.
Great Malaysian restaurant - attentive without being over the top. A couple dollars more for dishes on average but definitely made up by delicious well-cooked food and location in South Yarra. Had the cha kew teo and need rendang (Malaysian musts) as well as salted egg chicken. All very well cooked. Event the roti. My new asian gem in this area (also they deliver for free within 3 km).
Unpretentious and authentic. That’s how I would describe this restaurant. The place has that warm, homey feel to it. The family owned and run restaurant serve really tasty Malaysian Chinese dishes like char kway teow and sambal kangkong. I like this place very much.
This place has been around for ages, it’s one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Melb! I love so many of their dishes like the sizzling tofu, seafood laksa, hainanese chicken rice, chili crabs, Singaporean noodles and etc...their service is very good too, a cozy vibe!
Friend of mine took me here, first I didn't expect them to be in that area.
There are a little hidden in south yarra.
The food was great! Luckily that day we got to have the Singaporean chilli crab.
The aunty was very nice to us and we got oranges for dessert.
They are truly master of the food and really look after everyone.
I came here for celebrate Chinese New Years with my family. We order a lot of food but i like the most is their chilli pipis with fried mantou.
Hidden gem in South Yarra!
They are located on toorak road next to Shell petrol station.
The food were amazing!
We had the prawn nestum, flaky housemande tofu which was very tasty, the pipis with chili sauce and mantou
I could see they to great for the restaursnt!
Well done guys!
It’s well hidden, I’ve gone pass this place many times but never noticed it. The place is a bit dark and dingy but the food is amazing and prices were reasonable. Loved the roti and the Malay chicken curry. Also the milk rice and the kangkung was a big hit. Loved it. The only neg point for me was going to a Malaysian restaurant I always expect to have teh Tarik, but they didn’t have that. Other than that food was amazing.
Hidden gems in South Yarra. Love this Malaysian family business. Their foods are really good.
We ordered chilli pipis with fried mantaou, salted egg prawns, sambal kangkung, sizzling tofu and flaky tofu. I can’t pick my favourite dish here because I just love all of it!
Really recommended place!
Will I be back? Definitely!

The restaurant was very homey as it is a family-owned restaurant. I loved the apple chicken (although it sounds that both apple and chicken won’t go well together). The staffs were very friendly and will definitely come back again!
If I had to choose three cuisines to solely survive on for the rest of my life – I think about this important question a lot – Chinese Malaysian would be one of them, and so I was highly excited when Gingko Leaf Girl suggested we try Red Hot Wok, a Chinese Malaysian restaurant in South Yarra.
Everything here was soooo yummy. Stand out dish was no doubt the Singapore Chilli Crab. I am salivating just thinking about it!
Service was friendly and fairly prompt. We had an issue with our mantous (weren’t toasted enough for our liking), we queried this and they happily retoasted the buns to make them slightly more brown.
Also well priced! We will be back.
One of my favourite Chinese-Malaysian joint in Melbourne town, never disappoints! Love their apple chicken, salted egg prawn, sizzling tofu and fried rice. The service is quick and efficient. Highly recommended.
I have always come to this restaurant for so many years. The uncle who own the restaurant was very nice & kind and he always served me too even though the restaurant always busy during lunch or dinner. So make sure you make a booking first before you come.
Food:
Torched ribs - the ribs with sweet and sour sauce were all well balanced together. The meat was so tender, the sauce was not too overpowering it was a perfect contrast.
Sizzling tofu - this was the best dish that i’ve always dive into everytime i comeback to this restaurant! So soft, perfectly cooked and seasoned, the egg skin was so smooth, the beef and mushroom sauce was delicious and all the elements were all create harmony together in my mouth. Amaziiing!
Apple chicken - the chicken was so tender and soft and the skin was so crispy. The apple sauce was a perfect balance and seasoned for the dish!
Sambal kangkung - was delicioouuus! The vegetables was fresh, the sambal was perfectly seasoned, so fragrant and not too spicy, perfectly fit to my taste.

We have been coming to this restaurant for years. The food is consistently good. This Chinese New Year (CNY) we went back there again for our traditional dinner with the same group of friends. They serve Yee Sang every CNY and we know we wont get disappointed with the food there.
One of our fav Chinese Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. The place is normally quite busy so make sure you make a booking first. Our fav to order: sizzling tofu, kangkung balacan, apple chicken and their stir fried green beans. You can also order coconut or chicken rice for extra 50cents instead of plain rice. When we went yesterday, they didnt have many staff, only the owner and a waitress serving us but everything came out really fast and we didnt really have to put our hands longer than 15s to get noticed.
Authentic Malaysian cuisine. Brought a group of 11 here and having a variety of their dishes was great. I particularly recommend the drunken chicken soup in a hot pot!
The buk kut tae here is amazing. its such a nice homey feeling in the store, like you going to your aunty house and they cook for you! It is very cozy place
The Singapore Chilli Crab is the reason you eat here. Succulent soft sweet mud crab drenched in their tangy spicy chilli sauce with soft egg noodle was a delight and very reasonably priced. This is clearly the go to for authentic asian flavours & the sizzling tofu does not disappoint. Definitely come in a group as the serving sizes are large & you can try a lot more items on the menu. These guys definitely know how to stir fry with a smokey wok.
I ordered the crab noodles and that was the best, pipping hot sweet, salty, thick sauce and the most tender crab meat, with some egg noodles to soak up the sauce. It was so delicious. Would definitely recommend.
So recommend the mud crab with egg noodles (Singapore style source?)! We ordered it at the mud crab discount night, it was so good! And they probably makes the best chicken ribs in town! This is the must-order dish for us! But the other dishes were just average that I couldn't even remember their names...
We loved everything we ordered here. Was invited by a friend and we can't stop thinking about our meal. We had the Singapore chilli crab with roti which was amazing. Could not stop mopping up the sauce with the roti. The tofu was also a must order dish.
I would say this is my fav place for bak kut teh. Apart from the bak kut teh. Sizzling tofu and torch spare ribs would be my next fav!
Staffs are very friendly and smiling faces.
The place was easily to find and the customer service was great.
Ordered fried char kway teow and sizzling tofu. These dishes are highly recommended!!
Pretty pricey for Chinese, but it was my fault, I thought it was crab season and by the time we realized it was nearly $60 a pound we were so psyched for crab there was no going back.
The crab took ages to come, but was quite tasty, not the star of the show though, despite their price.
My faves were the sizzling tofu and fried rice, which was simple but for some reason quite delicious.
The pippies would've been better if there were actually more pippies and no-one could complain about $22 for 1L of house wine.
Wasn't as good as I remembered, so not sure if I'll come back.
Your authentic Chinese/Malay restaurant in Melbourne. My favourite 3 dishes pictured; torched ribs, sizzling tofu & red wok spinach. Need to go back to try the Singapore Chilli Crabs. Service, Atmosphere & Food 👌🏼
I struggled to find another Malaysian / Singaporean restaurant that attracts me more than Red Hot Wok. (Coming to mind is the place in Sydney, called Ginger & Spice, which is quite good, although sometimes I just wish to see more on their menu.)
About Red Hot Wok, things you shouln't miss on your first visit:
-> Chilli Crab - let me put it this way, it is authentic;
-> Roti - the best I've ever tried in this country. When it comes with the Chilli Crab, there's no way to stop;
-> Mixed veg (spinach, Kung kong, eggplant)
-> golden sand prawns
After that, you are on your own.
We were greeted with a tidy and inviting interior as we entered the front doors. The food was decent but a little pricey for the portion size. Service was a little inconsistent and could definitely be better. I was a little disappointed not to be able to have the crab, just make sure you call in advance to make sure that there is some for you when you get there.
This place is Bak-kut-teh heaven for me because the ultimate winter comfort food won't get any better than this. I tried the bitter Mellon with pork spare ribs today which is also very delicious - they are so generous with the pork ribs and very little bones too. The taste is very authentic and the service is awesome, the auntie (I think she is the owner) is very friendly and always makes me feel at home
Amazing food, it's popular with locals and always busy for good reason. My husband and I loved going there for a relaxed and delicious meal.
Super friendly staff, warm atmosphere and tasty food - Red Hot Wok delivers on all 3. Tucked away in a little cluster of restaurants on Toorak Rd, it's a place we have frequented a couple of times now, each time as good as the last.
The staff here never fail to make us feel welcome and the food is always tasty and flavoursome. A solid choice.
This is a pretty busy little Chinese Malaysian restaurant. Some dishes you need to pre-order or they might not be available! The chilli crab was delicious with the perfect balance of chilli without being too strong. My other favourite was the salt and pepper chicken ribs (not sure about dish name). Other dishes were less outstanding and mostly average. The owner is really friendly to chat to and he was helpful with the menu and food items to help accommodate our table of diners.
Amazing food, nice decor. The Thai basil eggplant was amazing, Asam prawns were lovely, service was excellent. Will definitely be returning.
A tradition almost ... we seem to order the same things. We've been coming here as bachelors and years have past ... the same grp of mates still come here but with our GFs / wives and/or own family.
We have noticed that the portions have shrunk a bit over the yrs but that's ok. The food is still pretty darn good! without fail our standard order .. a must are the salted egg chicken (2 portions)!.. sizzling tofu also 2 portions!! yep they are that good!! Butter prawns, kangkong...
Staff here can be a bit overworked so don't expect service to come with a smile :) but generally it's ok. We're here for the food and the company. Happy eating folks!!
This is the 3rd time we ate here and the food consistently good ;)
The price is quite expensive considering their small portion but trust me, its worth it :) i love their kamhiong pipi, salt n pepper chicken spare ribs, sizzling tofu, and golden sand prawn. Im definitely a regular :D
Very quick service and tasty simple dish for me. The sweet and sour pork with a side of coconut rice was simple and very tasty. Quick, cheap and yummy!
A nice little Malaysian restaurant serving the food typically found in many of the Chinese restaurants in Malaysia. Red Hot Wok is a restaurant we used to frequent many years ago but for whatever reason it dropped off our radar until a friend from Sydney requested we go for the fish head curry last year. And boy am I glad we did! The sambal kangkong (water spinach) is a deceptively simple dish that most places don't do well but Red Hot Wok has certainly perfected it. It's just like how it's done in Malaysia. Other dishes worth trying are the sizzling tofu, the salted egg chicken ribs & the fish head curry.
Amazing food. Great customer service - friendly and accomodating.
My friend loved the mud crabs. I loved the red hot chicken, delicious! Coming back for more.
It is worthwhile to book ahead as it gets crazy busy.

Always love coming here for their Apple chicken, chilli crab, silken tofu, and their burn torch pork ribs. This restaurant is considered as one of the best Malaysian Chinese restaurant in town! their portion sizes and prices are reasonable.
what do you do when cravings for singapore chilli crab are setting in, and you’re not planning any trips to asia anytime soon? you settle for the next best thing, red hot wok in south yarra. gathering a big group together one night (because chinese food is all about sharing), we were sadly told that mud crab wasn’t in season at the moment and just wouldn’t taste the same.
A little malaysian restaurant in South Yarra, very close to train station. The food is great and the portion is fairly big, perfect for sharing. I love the tofu, apple chicken and the prawn. The staff were friendly, the uncle made us a special birthday noodle since we got a birthday celebration on that day. Next time will try the famous crab dish!
We have been regulars here for a while. Red Hot Woo is a small, family run, reasonably priced restaurant which serves delicious Malaysian Chinese home style cooking. Over the years we have tried everything on the menu. I recommend the sizzling tofu, Teochew fish, and for something a little special, try the mud crabs with Singapore or ginger and garlic sauce.
Red Hot Wok has managed to stay consistent throughout the years - in terms of the quality of the food and the decor of restaurant. Must order dishes are the torched ribs and the sizzling tofu. Portion sizes are generous and prices have stayed reasonable. While not the best out there considering that a number of great Malaysian restaurants have popped up in Melbourne, Red Hot Wok remains a dependable and safe option when craving for Malaysian food.

Foods: 4.5/5
- MUST TRY: singapore chilli crap with noodle
Service: 3/5
- service is awesome, the restaurant owner is really nice and kind!!
Love… is when things are sizzling. Red Hot Wok makes the absolute best house-made tofu, so smooth and silky soft. The sauce is so yummy with the little pieces of Chinese salty fish, pork pieces and mushroom. The tofu is first deep fried till crispy while keeping the inside soft, then cooked in the sauce and served on a hot sizzling plate. The second you put a spoon of tofu in your mouth, your heart just melts and falls in love. (Careful your partner gets jealous!)
Singapore chilli crab!!! Enough said. It's not easy to find a place that really knows how to serve this dish the right way, with metal shell crusher thingies. Some might say it's a big hassle to have to work to get your crab meat out of its shell, but I say it's worth it and I don't mind ruining my manicure and losing a fake nail or two.
Been here a few times over the years and this place has never disappointed. Great chinese malaysian food and service. Love the sizzling tofu among other dishes.
Authentic Malaysian!. Malaysian born and living here for over 20 years now, I'd say this is one of the best places in Melbourne to eat Fried Kway Teow. Very consistent. Tastes better when you ask for the dish without MSG.
The food at Red Hot Wok is always fresh tasty and never disappoints. Make sure you try the salted egg yolk chicken ribs!
Whenever we feel like some Malaysian Chinese dishes, we head to Red Wok in South Yarra to get our fix. We usually order three dishes to share and this time was no exception. We had: Sambal kangkung - our go to vegetable dish. Slightly spicy, the water convolvulus is cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. Flaky tofu - deliciously soft egg tofu with a light soy dressing. Salted egg chicken ribs - chicken ribs are popular everywhere right now. The seasoning on this is just right; slight saltiness from the salted egg granules, the taste is reminiscent of butter prawns as there is the addition of curry leaves as well. Juicy, crispy goodness. So my birthday celebration continued with dinner at Red Hot Wok . Red Hot Wok is a simple, cozy restaurant serving unpretentious good old traditional style Chinese food. Jan actually remembered my cravings for a good chili crab, and so he made reservations here. It was a two minute walk from his apartment and I wondered why haven't we tried this place after moving in here for more than a year now. Sambal Belacan Kang Kong Its not at any grocery store that I can find Kang Kong. Kang Kong with belacan, that especially, is my favourite way of how the Kang Kong should be cooked. It was delicious. However, if it could be improved, add a little bit of sambal terasi and overcook it a little bit more, because personally, I love the flimsy stalks better. Salted Egg Chicken Ribs These Chicken pieces fried with salted egg and crumbs were so.. so good! I ended up eating the crumbs wrapped in greens. This dish was a recommended order by the waitress who served us. Amazing. Salted Fish & Pork Belly

Fast and tasty. This place is a local for me and it's hard to fault. Takeaway is fast and very reasonably priced at $11 for meat with rice. Service is friendly.
Authentic Malaysian (and I've been travelling to Malaysia since '80s) - this is my favourite in South Yarra, Prahran, Toorak without question.
Cafe style, not fine dining.
The mud crabs are delicious. we tried the singapore chilli and malaysian braised which were both good. glad we came here! booking is essential as the place small and busy
Great food- Singapore crab and the sizzling tofu are must haves. Due to distance, it's been about 7 years since we've been there but the food is still awesome and the staff are all so lovely. Thanks for a great experience!
Fantastic. Great genuine food, friendly staff. Everything that I have tried on the menu has been delicious. Will come back, and tell my friends to as well..
What a find. $15.50 for delicious roti and curry sauce plus an Indian mee goreng. Paired with a pilsner on a hot summer's evening and you're away laughing. Just what I needed in South Yarra/Toorak - something a bit more exciting without hurting the pocket.
A great dining experience. I had a great dining experience here.
The food was fresh and tasty. I tried the chilli crab and sizziling tofu. Both dishes were made with fresh and qulaity ingredients and were full of authentic malaysian flavour. After feasting on these dishes, I left the restaurant with satisfied tastebuds and a very happy stomach.
I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back for more myself!
Red Hot Wok where the wok stays hot!. Absolutely love this place! Look for Tony, his wife or guy with long hair and you can't go wrong!
I frequent this little family restaurant often and I can tell you I have more than a few favourite dishes. To die for is the Singapore Chilli Crab served on a bed of noodles or roti. Sweet, tangy and a little spicy, it's always a great starter and gets your tastebuds ready for delicious mains ahead!
There are two house specials at this place... the first is tofu. Whether it be flaky tofu, sizzling tofu or Red Wok tofu you will be amazed and the silky texture of the tofu, it literally just melts in your mouth. I order the tofu everytime I visit and its always just as tasty and cooked with consistency.. Tony sure has a winner of a recipe!
The second house special is the sambal water spinach. The sambal is also home made and packed full of flavour, much better than the watered down versions you get elsewhere. Also, not to be missed is the butter braised prawns, or something a little spicy go for the malaysian braised prawns. Both dishes are full of flavour and will lead your tastebuds on a journey to Malaysia and back. Hawker style food is also available at this (there's over 100 items on the menu) so whether it be fried kway teow, good ol fried rice, a laksa or har mee this place is sure to have it. Egg sauce combination hor fun is a winner and so is the randang beef.
Best tip I can give you about this place is ask if you're not sure on what to order! The owners of this little gem are always happy to help and serve with a smile!
Authentic Malaysian goodness. Have been coming here for years
It's hard to find a good fried rice with salted fish and chicken, and this place delivers it in style.
Never disappoints!
I love this place. My faves are the crispy skin chicken, char kway teow, and salt & pepper calamari. Yum!

Melbourne's Malaysian Jewel. RHW has been operational for over 10 years. Nestled in a more quiet area of Sth Yarra, it is more accessible than other Chapel St counterparts. I have eaten there happily for several years and am always delighted to make the trek out there despite living quite far away. I always recommend it to my friends who all become repeat customers. The owners have always been the same (lovely short haired lady with glasses, guy with the ponytail, and the chef out the back) who always greet all their guests happily. The restaurant is quite small but adds to the homey and welcoming atmosphere. My favourite dishes are the sizzling tofu, wasabi prawns, any of the Red Wok dishes (especially the spinach and chicken) and last but not least the chilli mudcrab which is divine and comparable to the ones I've tried at the East Coast Seafood Centre in Singapore. Dinnertime can be pretty busy so book in advance. My opinion is RHW is the best Chinese Malay restaurant in Melb that serves the most authentic food.
Great malaysian food. Whilst the laksa here doesnt get the hype, it is pretty decent and packed full of broth and ingredients.
come here for tasty, wholesome and scrumptious malaysian food that doesnt fail to disappoint.
pick would be the meat in tofu on a sizzling plate - be sure to order it in advance.
Wow - A really huge surprise. What looks like a seemingly innocent standard Chinese affair from the outside, turns out to be one of the best tasting Chinese Malay places in Melbourne.
The chilli crab is very very solid and very authentic. Big juicy mud crab with a flavourful sauce. The mantou is of course recommended. Honey pepper beef and the salted egg prawns were also great but the absolute stand out is the crispy silken tofu in soy.
Staff are friendly and place is nice although the chilli crab is definitely on the expensive side (around $111 for the dish for us).
Came to have some food before my flight back to Sydney. Didn’t have any expectations but this tiny restaurant surprised me with delicious food and great service. Flavour was quite good with the price tag, and the staff was very welcoming. I will definitely go back if I live around there
A family friendly palatable Chinese Malaysian cuisine restaurant in town. With a good location this place considered to be relativefly pocket friendly and has a good service. Parking area are available along the street, which could be difficult on the weekend. However, they serves online order now, which is so much easier.
Great service and friendly staff. Quiet Wednesday night but they are known to be really busy on weekends. The crab noodles were amazing, succulent crab meat (effing huge crab!) with great noodle texture, would have been great if they had a little more noodle in it. The tofu was super yum, cleaned out really quickly. Kum beng soup (mutton) is saltish but goes really well with plain rice. Servings were all really generous. Curry fish head was also another stunner, tender fish with a wide variety of vegs in it, easily one of the best dish.
Parking is 2 hours or you could park at the supermarket nearby.
Great Chinese Malaysian food. Beef hor fun (fried beef rice noodles with gravy) reminds me of the ones I have back home in HK. The sizzling tofu is a MUST TRY! The silkiest tofu I have ever had! Great portion size, friendly owner! Recommend and definitely return for more! Support local!
Service was great and has good surrounding atmosphere. The food was delicious = we ordered prawn with noodles, beef package, okra, and yusheng.
Very good Malaysian food here. Absolutely loved the Assam prawns and the salted egg fried chicken (omg!!).
