đąLizzieâs first impression: smells delicious, perfect consistency and always a great treat for any occassion.
đŠLizzie enjoyed: its one of my favourite cheesecake places as itâs so fluffy and sweet. Itâs the perfect portion size and the flavour is amazing. Not too cheesy and not overly sweet. The madeleines are also AMAZING.
đ
Lizzie did not enjoy: portions are very small but itâs totally worth it as itâs so fluffy and not comparable to any other places.
đĽLizzie rates overall: a great place for cake and I always go back time and time again.
Walked past and decided to try their creme brulee and i must say i was not dissapointed at all.
Really liked the slight charred flavour with the brown sugar and the textures were silky smooth. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be back for more
Always love getting a treat from here, there are times I've visited when it's busy and times when I was the only one there but the staff are always lovely. The original cheesecake is my go to, I mean I'll always try the new stuff but can't go past it. Warm or cold the Japanese cheesecake is fluffy and tasty. It's small enough I could seriously devour on my own but I always share!
My score 4.5 stars. J and I shared a post dinner treat from here on Mon 23rd Dec. Place smelled fab and service was nice â young woman who served us kept her smile amidst the pre-xmas chaos.
We got a mini cheese cake. Freshly baked â had to let it cool down a bit. Nice crust, nicely flavoured filling - gooey middle contrasting with the crust was heavenly! Only downside was there were no Matcha madeleines leftâŚ
First time Uncle Tetsu and it was delicious with the earl grey flavour!!!
Ordered:
đ Earl Grey flavour ($15.00)
Review:
I typically hate the normal cheesecake because of the overwhelming cheese flavour, but there's something special about Uncle Tetsu. It's soft, pillowy goodness and the earl grey fragrance leaves a light touch in your mouth. There's no strong cheese flavour at all!
I love the service (incredibly efficient) and the cute seasonal stamp on the cake!!
Cheese cake is just as good as expected. Getting it cold is a good idea if you want to keep it fresh for at least 3 days.
This shop may be tiny, but it's so busy; with people happily queueing for these sweet Japanese treats. Famous for it's Japanese cheesecake, I however recently popped in for a cheese tart and a matcha madeline.
Service was very efficient and friendly. It's evident that the staff know how to keep customers happy, by providing quick service in a clean and tidy environment. The displays of treats look really tempting, and I couldn't wait to try the matcha madeline. It had a light, cakey texture with a subtle green tea flavour. It wasn't the best cake I've ever had, but it was an inexpensive treat to have with a cup of coffee.
The cheese tarts are lovely and creamy, with a delicious cheesecake flavour. The pastry is nice and short, and held together well. Uncle Tetsu is a great place to stop for an unusual sweet treat. You will be in and out quickly, making it super convenient when you are busy.
Not only does this place make the most instagramable cake and dessert it also tastes amazing. I shared their classic cheesecake with two friends and it was the softest cake I have ever had. I love that it isn't as dense and rich as a traditional shortcrust pastry cheesecake but also more moist than a sponge cake. I highly recommend stopping by and ordering one of cakes as you will not regret it, also share it with your friends as it feeds many.
Loved the cheesecake and the chocolate one is even better !!
Absolutely the best baked cheesecake you can get! Light and fluffy not the usual type you can get that's quite dense. Thank you for coming to Melbourne đ
Don't really eat cheesecakes too often because I find them too sweet but Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes were really good and pillowy. Will definitely visit again another time.
I canât get enough of Uncle Tetsuâs cheesecake. The Japanese style cheesecake is super fluffy and soft and not too rich like a traditional baked cheesecake so you could almost eat a whole cake in one sitting. I prefer it served warmed but if you chill it, the cheese taste is a bit stronger.
June 2019 update - Got the Madeira cake with matcha as red bean in it. Was ok, like a dry matcha muffin. The honey Madeira tasted better. Also the cheesecake crisp biscuits were really nice and full of cheese/milk flavour. Apparently they were made with cheesecake twice baked or something.
Old reviews:
Tried all the cheesecakes (original, matcha and chocolate) from the store. My favourite is the matcha cheesecake. Very light, fluffy matcha bitter taste. Best served chilled. The original and chocolate is so so. The cheesecake baked biscuits are really good! They are crunchy and very milky taste.
Jan 2019 update - New cheese tarts are buy 5 get 1 free. Of course I got 5 lol. Anyway if you haven't tried straight out of the oven tarts, you don't know how good it is being this fresh! They ran out when I bought it so I waited for a few min and they brought out piping hot ones. They may look a bit burnt but OMG they taste great. The cheese wasn't very oozy but strong smooth cheese smell and flavour. Love it.
Can finally eat a cheesecake without guilt. Very soft and fluffy and a lot less fatty compared to other cheesecakes. Cheesecakes are a bane to my workout. Glad I stumbled upon Tetsuâs.
Great service and friendly as staff! Oh man was so quick we ordered and legit got our two cheesecake in a couple of seconds. Feels like Iâm eating clouds with these cheesecake mmmm could eat the whole thing in one sitting. Canât wait to try the matcha one! Pricing pushed it back from being a 5 star in my opinion.
Love the cheesecakes here, theyâre so soft and fluffy! Mind you, they arenât the cheapest ($18 for the most popular; original cheesecake). That being said, they are great for sharing and even for saving and eating later on (Tastes better IMO after having served some time in the refrigerator). The muffins are nice too, but a little dry in comparison. Not many flavours to choose from, but that doesnât matter when the cakes are just awesome.
First time trying this was in Sydney, I'm glad Uncle Tetsu is finally here. The cheesecake is sweet and slightly savoury, the perfect balance of flavours. The texture is very light and airy even though it looks a bit dense.
I have been to this cheese twice this year. I really love the taste of different cheesecakes uncle Tetsu has to offer. I especially love the original cheesecake. The original cheesecake tasted so good when bitten, the cheese melts into my mouth & it was very creamy. I recommend the cheesecake factory shop at Swanston st - Great customer service.
Went past the shop last night. Had a cheese tart. Great flavour and it is so satisfying. Will come back to try their cheese cake and other stuff.
The cheese cake was amazing. Itâs like eating a cloud. Loved it. The honey Madeline was pretty good as well. For me the best thing was the cheese tart, it was to die for. Soo creamy and amazing. Love it.
Damn the cheesecake here is so good. Itâs got the perfect ratio of sweet and cheesy. The chilled version is dense and rich. Fresh is very light and airy. You can get whatever based on what you feel like. Been trying to make some at home but for some reason I canât seem to get it exactly like this one. Wish there was more variety like the uncle tetsus in Sydney.
I tried the matcha cheesecake and it was so so yummy that I could probably have eaten the whole cake by myself. It was incredibly light with the matcha flavour not overpowering. Can't wait to eat more!
OMG the BEST cheesecake I have ever tried in my life was from Uncle Tetsu! I have been recommending this place to all my friends and family. This place is to die for, highly recommended, 10/10 đ
Best spongiest fluffiest melt in your mouth cheesecake ever! The hype was definitely real when I first tried the cheesecake.
It's one of those cheesecakes that literally fulfill your cravings.
The Japanese cheesecake by uncle tetsuâs is to die for! I have had New York cheese cake, which is present heavy. But, cheesecake here at this place is something else.
We had the cheese tarts, which was oh so gooey and absolutely delicious !
Got in here for their honey madeiline which was soo well flavored. Could've been more moist and probably lost its touch as we got em quite late.
They're famous for their cheesecake, so I'd definitely try it out soon :)
I love watching them make the madelines and cheesecake through the glass window. There is usually a line, so you are entertained watching them make your future treats!
Their madelines are like tall fluffy cupcakes, the original flavour being a light vanilla/honey. They are very addictive, and great with a cup of tea. Super yum.
The cheesecake is not like your traditional cheesecake - it is kind of light/mousse like, but still in the form of a cake. Definitely a must try. I love the chocolate flavour, as it is basically a chocolate mousse cake, and doesnât that just sound like all your dreams come true?!
Having tried Uncle Testu a very long time ago, I wanted to have another taste to see if it was as delicious as it was back when I first tried it.
It was absolutely amazing! I ordered the original, the cute little cheese cake tart had such a lovely texture, the crumbly biscuit base on the bottom and the filling inside was just delish!! I could of eaten more than just the 1 that is for sure!Â
I will be sure not to wait so long for my next treat there.
Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes are amazingly soft and fluffy, as well as rich and cheesy. I don't know how they do it. There are still queues occasionally but they are certainly not as long as when they first opened.
Their cheese tarts are also extremely attractive taste wise and the biscuit base is crispy, buttery and enjoyable.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of their madeleines....they were dry and ordinary. It might have been from an old batch so I might give it another chance.
I am more than happy to welcome Uncle Tetsu into my family!
This place is good, really good. These little custard tarts are sooo delicious, gosh I could sit there and vacuum them all up hahahaha
I really like the biscuit base, it was crunchy and light. Just perfect.
The filling was delicious too, creamy and soooo yummy hahaha this place is definitely worth a visit for a treat.
Or maybe anytime? Hahaha
Aman Saraf
Love the light texture of these cheesecakes , although not as good as the original in Osaka I really like these jiggly cheesecakes ! The original one is by far my fave
I finally tried Uncle Tetsuâs Japanese cheesecake for the first time a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is YUM. Itâs so light and fluffy, it is very easy to go through the whole cake without intending to! Pretty good value too! I had the original signature cheesecake, which was pretty good for $17.99. Iâm looking forward to trying the other flavours and the cheese tarts too!!
Fabulous looking cakes that are super light and fluffy and very authentic Japanese style cheesecakes. Went for the original and chocolate combo to mix things up a little. The chocolate one was a tad more dense with good chocolate flavour but my favourite was still the original. Superb that you can get these in the heart of Melbourne and I highly recommend these to all who haven't tried them. Lovely friendly Japanese girl serving too and I found myself saying 'arigato gozaimas' in parting.
Well well well, Iâd like to thank the #1 Tram for being 8 minutes until arrival. Across the road a well branded beacon of hope, the Uncle Tetsu cheesecake shop. I approach cautiously as one does an unfamiliar food. What is this? Why is it special? Do I invest in a tasty morsel or do I hold true to my healthy eating for the day?
5 minutes later Iâm staring lovingly into the decadent half eaten cheese tart. Marvelling the fluffy texture, the sweet sour interior and the sweet crunchy crumb. This is a revelation. A marvel. A new food treat to dream about. Thank you Uncle Tetsu, I will be back.
The best spongy fluffy cheesecake I have ever had. It tastes just amazing and melts in your mouth. Ideally would be to have it with coffee or hot chocolate.
Food : âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
- My first original cheesecake, finally ! First bit wasnât really tasty but itâs come after. Like it.
- The matcha madeleine tasted great but it was a bit dry for me.
Price : âď¸âď¸âď¸ Reasonable
Service : âď¸âď¸âď¸ âď¸ Friendly staff
Ambience : âď¸âď¸âď¸ Canât dine-in but the shop and presentation are ok.
The texture is better than what am expected. It was so smooth and creamy. I love the smell of the cheese and it didn't have any hint of salty cheese at all. I really love it. I guess it will taste good when you pull it from freezer or even when you want to put it in microwave for some seconds.
The cheese cake that is soooooooo yummy and melts in your mouth. You're going to crave for more. Share it with friends or take it all by yourself. Its a truly amazing treat.
I'm in love with their fluffy but light, melting in mouth cheesecake! - Both Original and Matcha flavour. It is never too rich and gets sickening to eat. Madeleines are great too. They are perfect when served hot. I missed their honey flavour madeleines. I think it was the best flavour among all the flavours that have been available.
Love the cheesecake here, esp when it's cold rather than warm as there is a slight eggy flavour when it's warm. The japanese cheesecake are not too sweet and feel really light and fluffy. With the matcha cheesecake, I like the bitterness of the matcha and the contrast with the red beans as well. I'm amazed that the service is always perfect!
The best cheese cake ever! I love how their cheesecake doesn't make you feel sick of even after having a whole cake because it is so soft, spongy with little sugar and not too fat. Love it. The service is so friendly and fast!
Uncle tetsu is known for their classic fluffy cheesecakes, I have tried the cheesecakes too many times and not one was ever a disappointment!
It has a unique sweet flavour, I enjoyed every single bite of it.
Will be coming back.
Uncle Tetsu finally arrived in Melbourne. Its first store on Swanston Street opened in late November 2017.
I first went on 14 December 2017 with a girlfriend after our Christmas dinner catch up. We weren't too sure if we made the right choice and afraid that we'd have to wait in queue for quite sometime. But surprisingly the queue moved very fast. I guess there isn't much choice as you either buy the cheesecake which only comes in 1 size and 1 flavour or their madeleines.Â
đMENUđ
Since opening late last year, they have introduced Matcha Cheesecake, 2 more Madeleine flavours, Japanese puddings and Matcha soft serve! Fantastic!Â
đPRICEđ
Original Cheesecake $17.99
Vanilla Madeleine $3.50
đVERDICTđ
I bought the original cheesecake and a madeleine on my first visit to Uncle Tetsu. So this review is based upon my first purchase/taste only.
For $3.50 for small cupcake size madeleine, I was disappointed. It was very dense and heavy, it was not enjoyable at all. The consistency was heavier than a muffin. Thankfully my main purpose was to try the cheesecake, so the madeleine was just a side detour!Â
Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake is amazingly delicious. It is super light and fluffy and so different to your typical western cheesecake and near to perfection to that of Japan texture and flavours.
The cake is made with only 6 ingredients: cream cheese, butter, egg, flour, milk and sugar.
If you havn't been to Uncle Tetsu, then it's worth a visit.Â
Uncle Tetsu is opened 11am to 11pm daily which is fantastic. But realistically they stop making their cheesecake by mid-evening and most would be gone by 9pm. How do I know, well because most recently ( 28 May 2018), I went around 8.50pm after dining out with friends, wanting to buy a cheesecake to bring home to eat for the weekend, but they were all sold out! I think next time, I have to go straight after work and buy it. Haha!!
I recently tried the madeleines at Uncle Tetsu, both the vanilla and the chocolate. I liked them, the flavours werenât overly sweet. A nice cake to have with a coffee or cup of tea. They are quite dense though, I didnât find them light and fluffy. But I enjoyed them.
Loved both the orginal cheesecake and the matcha cheesecake! It's delicious- extremely soft and moist; melts in your mouth. It's pricey in relation to the size of the cake but the taste and quality makes it worth it. As for the madeleines, it smells amazing but tastes quite average.
Having tried original and matcha cheesecake
I would prefer the original over the matcha flavor
Bought the cold matcha cheesecake
The texture is less spongy than the original. The matcha flavor is quite strong
What I really like is, itâs not very sweet.
I love cheesecake in general. Never thought the Japanese cheesecake will be that good! Itâs not as dense as your average cheesecake. Very light and airy, which means you can eat more of it! đ Absolutely amazing
Cake was so light and soft....will definitely eat this cake again.
Everything was well balanced.
Hopefully they will have few more outlets in Melbourne very soon.
To my friend that introduced me to this place! Amen! This place is just great! Those matcha cakes were just so good! So soft and so moist and full of flavour!
I tried the famous Uncle Tetsu Cheese Cake and that was bloody delicious! I heard about Uncle Tetsu back when I was in my hometown Indonesia and finally got the chance to taste it here in Melbourne. The cake is fluffy and airy and perfect for light snack without a doubt! Overall delicious dessert!
Itâs super great to have this store finally open in Melbourne. This is a famous cheese cake from Japan. I love how soft and cheesy it is in the mouth. You guys seriously should try this
A friend suggested to try out Uncle Tetsu since her and I havenât been, so we went after our dinner here and ordered the original cheesecake. We sat down nearby to eat it and boy did it not disappoint! The cake is fluffy and doesnât break apart one bit, it melts in your mouth and thereâs no overpowering flavour of cheese. You can taste the egg but it hits the spot just perfectly well. Itâs not your average cheesecake where itâs too much as this is way different. Could probably finish off one cake to yourself lol, also tried the matcha cupcake and that was yummy as anything! Will come here again!
I heart Uncle Tetsu!
Two years ago I lined up for 45 minutes outside an Uncle Tetsu in Hong Kong, on a cold winters night, and managed to snag me one of the last in the final batch of standard cheesecakes that night.
The delicate cloud like softness and subtle sweetness had me hooked in an instant! The next day whilst scavenging the final remnants of the cake, I discovered that the texture had altered to a more creamy, ice-cream like consistency; which I also adored.
Two years later, here we are, with an Uncle Tetsu to call our own in Melbourne, which is true to form as the one I had two years ago! Forget what you know about those typical sickly sweet, dense, diabetes encouraging cheesecakes - you won't need them anymore with Uncle Tetsu in town!
I bought the matcha pudding, and the matcha cheesecake both delicious. The matcha pudding is smaller than the original but comes with a lower price. As an avid fan of matcha I enjoyed this cheesecake very much. It bounces and the texture is so light and fluffy. However, it is quite light and wonât keep you full. Over time, it does become a bit more dense and shrinks (not to a great extent though). I would definitely buy Uncle tetsuâs cheesecakes again for a special occasion with friends.
Different to any kind of cake I've had before. Very Light and fluffy which makes it a very interesting texture! Perfect level of sweetness .
The best lightweight cheesecake ever! I love it itâs super yummy. Tried the Madeleine but didnât think it was as good. Wish they did miniature cheesecakes though!
I have been waiting for Uncle Tetsu to land in Melbourne ever since they opened up in Sydney - and I was definitely blown away by their cheesecake!
My cake was so freshly baked that it was still a little steamy by the time I got home. The cake is super fluffy and moist (cutting it was like cutting a cloud) and it practically melts in your mouth. Flavour-wise, it is not like your typical Western style cheesecake; it has a very light cheese flavour, a lovely fragrant smell and its just very lightly sweet.
I ended up leaving some in the fridge overnight and it makes the cake denser (a very light mousse texture) and the cheese flavour more intense. I think I personally liked the cake more after it spent the night in the fridge.
Only downside is that for $18, you get a very, very tiny cake which you can easily finish by yourself. Uncle Tetsu also sells Madeleines however, they weren't that amazing. I will definitely be coming back for more cheesecake though.
Woohoo finally got a hold on one of these goodies!!! Heard about these delicious goodies and was very satisfied!! The cheesecake was light and fluffy just as expected. Was afraid it would be too cheesy but thankgod it wasnt. The creaminess and airiness of the cake definately helped. Very different to a normal cheesecake. More like a spongey chiffon. Way too small for the $18 price tag though. Honestly if there was a queue i wouldnt have tried it but got there at 4.30pm and it was empty yay for me!! Feeds about 8 people. Would i get it again..yeah haha!
Ambience 3/5 - it is a small take away place. Food is prepared in front of you. Not a lot of space to accommodate more than 3 people or so in one shot.
Food 4/5- Signature cheese cake is super amazing and a must have. The other desserts have a very caffeine'ish flavour so not many would relish..hence a drop in rating.
Fluffy (cotton-like), melt-in-ypur-mouth, perfectly sweet and subtle flavors makes Uncle Tetsu's cheese cakes one of the best Japanese Cheese Cakes we have had. Totally worth the price (though little steep) and hype. We even loved their madeleines.
Long queue and slow service (extremely slow...like they attend one customer at a time and that could be a pain especially when the customers are indecisive or not good at communicating. Even staffs are very bad at communicating. ) is definitely a spoilsport and thus, misses to score full 5.
I bought an original cheesecake as I walked past the Swanston St store and there was no line (I hate lining up for stuff!).
It was really fresh and hot out of the oven but I think it tasted better the next day when it has set a little as it's almost like you're inhaling air otherwise!
I probably wouldn't buy it again though unless someone really wanted to try it, pretty expensive for one small cake.
Initially queues were very long, went recently and the wait was not too bad. Depends what time of day as I walked past on another occasion and it was empty. I was worried it would not live up to the hype but I really enjoyed it. I love the texture. Light, moist, spongey. It literally melted in your mouth. I love that it was not very sweet. Serious sweet toothes may be disappointed. If I had to give it one negative it would be that Iâd like it to be more cheesy. You have the choice of buying it warm or from the fridge. I opted for the warm meaning I could then try it cold after putting my leftovers in the fridge. Having it cold is supposed to intensify the cheese flavour. You could even heat it back up in the microwave too. Costwise it does seem dear although small cakes like that go for more with decorations at breadtop or even the cheesecake shop. So minus the toppings itâs probably on par?! I wonât be buying this all the time but it would definitely be an awesome treat now and again.
Excellent cheesecake for those who want to taste the actual taste of the dessert and not just sacharine sweetness predominant in most cheesecakes. Sugar content is quite low here, so it's delicious, refined and not treacly at all.
Uncle Tetsu is famous for their super fluffy, Japanese style cheesecakes. I love how they always come out with new cheesecake flavours over the years (while keeping the original a sticky on their menu). Earl grey cheesecake is a favourite, and I also loved their other creations - especially the crepe brĂťlĂŠe!
Yumm yumm yumm ,,
Visited for first time in this cake shop ,,
So many delicious cheese cakes and tarts ,,,
Omg ,,, they r awesome
Was in a doubt to try but worth it. Crepe is so good and the cream is not too sweet just the perfect amount for us⌠would love to try againđ
2021 - Uncle Tetsu's have really out done themselves with their take on the French pancake, with the "Crepe Brulee".
Loaded with strawberries, whipped cream and pieces of their original cheesecake.
It's so light and fluffy, you'd literally inhale it!
2016 - Uncle Tetsu's really knows how to put the "moist" in cheesecake, these literally are the epitome of "moist".
The famous fluffy and delicate texture is what earned Uncle Tetsu's universal acclaim.
It's very different to the cheesecakes of the old world, with only a slight after taste of cheese, lack of biscuit base and overall loss of that, dense stomach real estate feeling.
Just like eating a cloud.
A "moist" cloud.
Their cheesecake is good but the crepe brulee could be better. It might just be me but the crepe brulee tasted a bit bland, I think it'd be good if they offered other flavors like chocolate or matcha for those wanting flavors stronger than regular custard. Nevertheless still a good treat that's worth a try.
I love the cheesecake from uncle tetsu. It's the softest fluffiest cheesecake that I have ever tasted. The good thing about it is that it's not very rich and creamy. My aunty really likes it because of this. It is unbelievable how soft the cheese cake was. The Madeline's were very nice as well. There was a subtle honey smell and flavour to the Madeline's. It tasted even better when I microwaved it for 30 seconds. I will definitely come back and try other flavours very soon!
