Review Uncle Tetsu - Melbourne

Stephanie Yesmukanova
Excellent cheesecake for those who want to taste the actual taste of the dessert and not just sacharine sweetness predominant in most cheesecakes. Sugar content is quite low here, so it's delicious, refined and not treacly at all.

Uncle Tetsu is famous for their super fluffy, Japanese style cheesecakes. I love how they always come out with new cheesecake flavours over the years (while keeping the original a sticky on their menu). Earl grey cheesecake is a favourite, and I also loved their other creations - especially the crepe brûlée!

Was in a doubt to try but worth it. Crepe is so good and the cream is not too sweet just the perfect amount for us… would love to try again😍

2021 - Uncle Tetsu's have really out done themselves with their take on the French pancake, with the "Crepe Brulee". Loaded with strawberries, whipped cream and pieces of their original cheesecake. It's so light and fluffy, you'd literally inhale it! 2016 - Uncle Tetsu's really knows how to put the "moist" in cheesecake, these literally are the epitome of "moist". The famous fluffy and delicate texture is what earned Uncle Tetsu's universal acclaim. It's very different to the cheesecakes of the old world, with only a slight after taste of cheese, lack of biscuit base and overall loss of that, dense stomach real estate feeling. Just like eating a cloud. A "moist" cloud.

Their cheesecake is good but the crepe brulee could be better. It might just be me but the crepe brulee tasted a bit bland, I think it'd be good if they offered other flavors like chocolate or matcha for those wanting flavors stronger than regular custard. Nevertheless still a good treat that's worth a try.

I love the cheesecake from uncle tetsu. It's the softest fluffiest cheesecake that I have ever tasted. The good thing about it is that it's not very rich and creamy. My aunty really likes it because of this. It is unbelievable how soft the cheese cake was. The Madeline's were very nice as well. There was a subtle honey smell and flavour to the Madeline's. It tasted even better when I microwaved it for 30 seconds. I will definitely come back and try other flavours very soon!

Tried their over hyped crème brûlée cone it’s not bad but I don’t think it’s worth the hype

So mini. I want more

😱Lizzie’s first impression: smells delicious, perfect consistency and always a great treat for any occassion.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: its one of my favourite cheesecake places as it’s so fluffy and sweet. It’s the perfect portion size and the flavour is amazing. Not too cheesy and not overly sweet. The madeleines are also AMAZING.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: portions are very small but it’s totally worth it as it’s so fluffy and not comparable to any other places.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for cake and I always go back time and time again.

Walked past and decided to try their creme brulee and i must say i was not dissapointed at all.

Really liked the slight charred flavour with the brown sugar and the textures were silky smooth. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be back for more

Always love getting a treat from here, there are times I've visited when it's busy and times when I was the only one there but the staff are always lovely. The original cheesecake is my go to, I mean I'll always try the new stuff but can't go past it. Warm or cold the Japanese cheesecake is fluffy and tasty. It's small enough I could seriously devour on my own but I always share!
Sita Pramana
The original cheesecake is overpriced for the size. It doesn't jiggle as advertised but then again I didn't get it fresh from the oven. The real put off was actually the flavor itself. The cake whilst very moist, was a bit bland. Overall disappointed.

My score 4.5 stars. J and I shared a post dinner treat from here on Mon 23rd Dec. Place smelled fab and service was nice – young woman who served us kept her smile amidst the pre-xmas chaos.

We got a mini cheese cake. Freshly baked – had to let it cool down a bit. Nice crust, nicely flavoured filling - gooey middle contrasting with the crust was heavenly! Only downside was there were no Matcha madeleines left…

First time Uncle Tetsu and it was delicious with the earl grey flavour!!!

Ordered:
🎂 Earl Grey flavour ($15.00)

Review:
I typically hate the normal cheesecake because of the overwhelming cheese flavour, but there's something special about Uncle Tetsu. It's soft, pillowy goodness and the earl grey fragrance leaves a light touch in your mouth. There's no strong cheese flavour at all!

I love the service (incredibly efficient) and the cute seasonal stamp on the cake!!

Cheese cake is just as good as expected. Getting it cold is a good idea if you want to keep it fresh for at least 3 days.

This shop may be tiny, but it's so busy; with people happily queueing for these sweet Japanese treats. Famous for it's Japanese cheesecake, I however recently popped in for a cheese tart and a matcha madeline.

Service was very efficient and friendly. It's evident that the staff know how to keep customers happy, by providing quick service in a clean and tidy environment. The displays of treats look really tempting, and I couldn't wait to try the matcha madeline. It had a light, cakey texture with a subtle green tea flavour. It wasn't the best cake I've ever had, but it was an inexpensive treat to have with a cup of coffee.

The cheese tarts are lovely and creamy, with a delicious cheesecake flavour. The pastry is nice and short, and held together well. Uncle Tetsu is a great place to stop for an unusual sweet treat. You will be in and out quickly, making it super convenient when you are busy.

Not only does this place make the most instagramable cake and dessert it also tastes amazing. I shared their classic cheesecake with two friends and it was the softest cake I have ever had. I love that it isn't as dense and rich as a traditional shortcrust pastry cheesecake but also more moist than a sponge cake. I highly recommend stopping by and ordering one of cakes as you will not regret it, also share it with your friends as it feeds many.

Loved the cheesecake and the chocolate one is even better !!
Tommylicious
I enjoy the fluffy cakes they have. Although on this occasion I bought the matcha cake which was cold. It has probably been left out awhile.

These cakes are amazing fresh out of the oven so it’s actually best if there’s a little line.
Oodreiilittlepotato
Had their matcha and chocolate madeliene! :) i would recommend their matcha one!! :) really matcha-ey!! Both got ok texture. A bit dry for my liking.

Overall 3.5/5!!!
Coco
Absolutely the best baked cheesecake you can get! Light and fluffy not the usual type you can get that's quite dense. Thank you for coming to Melbourne 🙏
Dzc
Don't really eat cheesecakes too often because I find them too sweet but Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes were really good and pillowy. Will definitely visit again another time.

Uncle Tetsu via Foodora, skip the queue! Such a wonderful feeling to not have to line up. :P They opened a few months ago on main streets and had crazy snaking lines. Recently you can order through delivery services. We order through foodora and were delighted to see a free pick up option!...
KitsuneAndFood 🦊
Their cream cheese pudding are sooo delicious much more so than their cheesecake. The cheesecakes are not as light and fluffy as authentic Japanese cheesecakes in my opinion.
Y
I have only tried the cheese tarts and the honey madeleines here.

The cheese tarts had a soft and strong cream cheese filling and a soft buttery outer shell. It was nice but really cheesy.

The honey madeleine was the popular flavour out of the three (others were matcha and chocolate). It had a nice honey taste. It reminded me of a honey castella cake....
It was my first time trying madeleines so I didn’t know that they were dry (maybe I should have reheated it).

The staff serving me was really nice and she was talking to me while having a happy and smiley face. I wanted to buy the cheesecake but no one in my family will share it with me...

I love Japanese desserts and bakeries. Everything at Uncle Tetsu looked delicious and beautiful.
Eat Good Melbourne
I can’t get enough of Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake. The Japanese style cheesecake is super fluffy and soft and not too rich like a traditional baked cheesecake so you could almost eat a whole cake in one sitting. I prefer it served warmed but if you chill it, the cheese taste is a bit stronger.
Some Bunee Loves Food
June 2019 update - Got the Madeira cake with matcha as red bean in it. Was ok, like a dry matcha muffin. The honey Madeira tasted better. Also the cheesecake crisp biscuits were really nice and full of cheese/milk flavour. Apparently they were made with cheesecake twice baked or something.

Old reviews:
Tried all the cheesecakes (original, matcha and chocolate) from the store. My favourite is the matcha cheesecake. Very light, fluffy matcha bitter taste. Best served chilled. The original and chocolate is so so. The cheesecake baked biscuits are really good! They are crunchy and very milky taste.

Jan 2019 update - New cheese tarts are buy 5 get 1 free. Of course I got 5 lol. Anyway if you haven't tried straight out of the oven tarts, you don't know how good it is being this fresh! They ran out when I bought it so I waited for a few min and they brought out piping hot ones. They may look a bit burnt but OMG they taste great. The cheese wasn't very oozy but strong smooth cheese smell and flavour. Love it.

Can finally eat a cheesecake without guilt. Very soft and fluffy and a lot less fatty compared to other cheesecakes. Cheesecakes are a bane to my workout. Glad I stumbled upon Tetsu’s.
Ann T
Great service and friendly as staff! Oh man was so quick we ordered and legit got our two cheesecake in a couple of seconds. Feels like I’m eating clouds with these cheesecake mmmm could eat the whole thing in one sitting. Can’t wait to try the matcha one! Pricing pushed it back from being a 5 star in my opinion.
Lemon
Overall.. all items are overpriced. Bought honey & green tea ( Mattcha) Madeleines. Green tea flavor was very dry and no moisture at all. Honey one was still ok but not worth to try those again. All my friends agreed with not a value for $$..
Vanessa
Love the cheesecakes here, they’re so soft and fluffy! Mind you, they aren’t the cheapest ($18 for the most popular; original cheesecake). That being said, they are great for sharing and even for saving and eating later on (Tastes better IMO after having served some time in the refrigerator). The muffins are nice too, but a little dry in comparison. Not many flavours to choose from, but that doesn’t matter when the cakes are just awesome.
Eliza T
First time trying this was in Sydney, I'm glad Uncle Tetsu is finally here. The cheesecake is sweet and slightly savoury, the perfect balance of flavours. The texture is very light and airy even though it looks a bit dense.
Fatboi Food Blog
I have been to this cheese twice this year. I really love the taste of different cheesecakes uncle Tetsu has to offer. I especially love the original cheesecake. The original cheesecake tasted so good when bitten, the cheese melts into my mouth & it was very creamy. I recommend the cheesecake factory shop at Swanston st - Great customer service.
Willzie
Went past the shop last night. Had a cheese tart. Great flavour and it is so satisfying. Will come back to try their cheese cake and other stuff.
Ms Rodrigo
The cheese cake was amazing. It’s like eating a cloud. Loved it. The honey Madeline was pretty good as well. For me the best thing was the cheese tart, it was to die for. Soo creamy and amazing. Love it.
Jessie Tran
Damn the cheesecake here is so good. It’s got the perfect ratio of sweet and cheesy. The chilled version is dense and rich. Fresh is very light and airy. You can get whatever based on what you feel like. Been trying to make some at home but for some reason I can’t seem to get it exactly like this one. Wish there was more variety like the uncle tetsus in Sydney.
KN J
I tried the matcha cheesecake and it was so so yummy that I could probably have eaten the whole cake by myself. It was incredibly light with the matcha flavour not overpowering. Can't wait to eat more!
Jennifer
OMG the BEST cheesecake I have ever tried in my life was from Uncle Tetsu! I have been recommending this place to all my friends and family. This place is to die for, highly recommended, 10/10 👌
Saba Mirza
Best spongiest fluffiest melt in your mouth cheesecake ever! The hype was definitely real when I first tried the cheesecake.
It's one of those cheesecakes that literally fulfill your cravings.
Korobi Roy Saha
The Japanese cheesecake by uncle tetsu’s is to die for! I have had New York cheese cake, which is present heavy. But, cheesecake here at this place is something else.
We had the cheese tarts, which was oh so gooey and absolutely delicious !
Justin R
This place is really good. Little custatd tarts are soo delicious! I really like the biscuits base. It was crunchy and light. The filling was delicious too, creamy and so yummy. Though the service was not that good. Still, this place is definitely worth a visit for a treat.
Angelo Pinnaduwa
Got in here for their honey madeiline which was soo well flavored. Could've been more moist and probably lost its touch as we got em quite late.
They're famous for their cheesecake, so I'd definitely try it out soon :)

I remember seeing Uncle Tetsu all over Facebook and wanting to get my hands on the the jiggling cheese cake. I was able to try some in Japan and it was probably the worst cheesecake I’ve ever tried. I remember I took a bite and I didn’t want to to continue. It wasn’t my kind of cheesecake. It was very creamy, light and fluffy. Sounds good right? I thought so too but wasn’t what I expected it to be. Definitely give it a go! I guess, each to their own.

Anyways, I decided to give the cheese tarts a go here in Melbourne and it was delicious!! I think I prefer it more than Hokkaido cheese tarts! I liked the amount of cheese they used and it wasn’t too sickening. I do prefer Pablo cheesetarts over these tho.

Overall, definitely try to cheese tarts! Would defs come back for more!
Hannah
I went there on Monday night to have 1 original cheesecake and 1 matcha cheesecake. I was so surprised as all the cakes are already made in the box and no longer hot. The cake shape is not jiggly as it means to be at the original Japanese franchise. The cake texture is okay but it is quite soft and cold. The original cheesecake is so plain. The matcha does not taste like real matcha and very very bitter. I would not come back to purchase these cake again if the quality is not improved. I would rather recommend people to go for frozen Korean cheesecake instead.
Karma Clarke
I love watching them make the madelines and cheesecake through the glass window. There is usually a line, so you are entertained watching them make your future treats!

Their madelines are like tall fluffy cupcakes, the original flavour being a light vanilla/honey. They are very addictive, and great with a cup of tea. Super yum.

The cheesecake is not like your traditional cheesecake - it is kind of light/mousse like, but still in the form of a cake. Definitely a must try. I love the chocolate flavour, as it is basically a chocolate mousse cake, and doesn’t that just sound like all your dreams come true?!
Simmyeats.Melb
Having tried Uncle Testu a very long time ago, I wanted to have another taste to see if it was as delicious as it was back when I first tried it.

It was absolutely amazing! I ordered the original, the cute little cheese cake tart had such a lovely texture, the crumbly biscuit base on the bottom and the filling inside was just delish!! I could of eaten more than just the 1 that is for sure!

I will be sure not to wait so long for my next treat there.
Ramieleatsshootsandleaves
Why can't they sell slices like they do in Sydney? I understand the limited seating, but it's within a food court - served on paper plates; more people would be willing to try! Matcha is cheaper than original and chocolate - whodathunk?
Sunny Days Melbourne
Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes are amazingly soft and fluffy, as well as rich and cheesy. I don't know how they do it. There are still queues occasionally but they are certainly not as long as when they first opened.
Their cheese tarts are also extremely attractive taste wise and the biscuit base is crispy, buttery and enjoyable.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of their madeleines....they were dry and ordinary. It might have been from an old batch so I might give it another chance.
I am more than happy to welcome Uncle Tetsu into my family!

This place is good, really good. These little custard tarts are sooo delicious, gosh I could sit there and vacuum them all up hahahaha

I really like the biscuit base, it was crunchy and light. Just perfect.

The filling was delicious too, creamy and soooo yummy hahaha this place is definitely worth a visit for a treat.

Or maybe anytime? Hahaha

Aman Saraf

Love the light texture of these cheesecakes , although not as good as the original in Osaka I really like these jiggly cheesecakes ! The original one is by far my fave
Oj_always_eating
I finally tried Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese cheesecake for the first time a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is YUM. It’s so light and fluffy, it is very easy to go through the whole cake without intending to! Pretty good value too! I had the original signature cheesecake, which was pretty good for $17.99. I’m looking forward to trying the other flavours and the cheese tarts too!!
Spaghetti Monster
Fabulous looking cakes that are super light and fluffy and very authentic Japanese style cheesecakes. Went for the original and chocolate combo to mix things up a little. The chocolate one was a tad more dense with good chocolate flavour but my favourite was still the original. Superb that you can get these in the heart of Melbourne and I highly recommend these to all who haven't tried them. Lovely friendly Japanese girl serving too and I found myself saying 'arigato gozaimas' in parting.

Well well well, I’d like to thank the #1 Tram for being 8 minutes until arrival. Across the road a well branded beacon of hope, the Uncle Tetsu cheesecake shop. I approach cautiously as one does an unfamiliar food. What is this? Why is it special? Do I invest in a tasty morsel or do I hold true to my healthy eating for the day?

5 minutes later I’m staring lovingly into the decadent half eaten cheese tart. Marvelling the fluffy texture, the sweet sour interior and the sweet crunchy crumb. This is a revelation. A marvel. A new food treat to dream about. Thank you Uncle Tetsu, I will be back.
Nupur Bhople
The best spongy fluffy cheesecake I have ever had. It tastes just amazing and melts in your mouth. Ideally would be to have it with coffee or hot chocolate.

Food : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- My first original cheesecake, finally ! First bit wasn’t really tasty but it’s come after. Like it.
- The matcha madeleine tasted great but it was a bit dry for me.
Price : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reasonable
Service : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ Friendly staff
Ambience : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Can’t dine-in but the shop and presentation are ok.
Selly Nurmala
The texture is better than what am expected. It was so smooth and creamy. I love the smell of the cheese and it didn't have any hint of salty cheese at all. I really love it. I guess it will taste good when you pull it from freezer or even when you want to put it in microwave for some seconds.
Bikool
The cheese cake that is soooooooo yummy and melts in your mouth. You're going to crave for more. Share it with friends or take it all by yourself. Its a truly amazing treat.
Pandy
I’ve had Uncle Tetsu’s original cheesecake before in Sydney and I thought it was quite amazing. But unfortunately I didn’t get the same satisfaction from this Melbourne outlet. Something is missing, while the texture is right it lacked flavour. I really do hope they can improve the quality.
The Official Food Hunters
Don’t understand the hype around this! Had the green tea and red bean flavour cheesecake and sadly the matcha flavour isn’t really there. It just tastes like a sweet sponge cake without any special cheesecake flavour. Perhaps it might be best eaten fresh straight after it’s been baked? Will try and go for the original flavour next time but not any time soon.
Aki
I'm in love with their fluffy but light, melting in mouth cheesecake! - Both Original and Matcha flavour. It is never too rich and gets sickening to eat. Madeleines are great too. They are perfect when served hot. I missed their honey flavour madeleines. I think it was the best flavour among all the flavours that have been available.
Diesel
The cheesecake is soft and the taste is mild. However I can’t understand what’s the hype with it. I’ve had better cheesecakes in my life and this one to me is a 3 star product.
SatieinMelb
Got to try all their cheesecakes options available: original, matcha and the last released chocolate version.
Matcha version sadly lacks matcha flavour and the chocolate one doesn't taste any different from a chocolate sponge cake.
Maybe because I got them not warm from the oven, but the alternative flavours definitely didn't hit the spot.
If you haven't yet tried Uncle Tetsu, just go for the original.
TriedNBested
For my taste I prefer a Polish cheesecake or NY. The Japanese one is light like a chiffon cake but the cheese flavour is very subtle. Not unpleasant but whether you enjoy it immensely will depend on personal preference. The Madeleine are tasty, you can taste the honey but nothing you couldn't bane at home yourself
Food For Thought
Love the cheesecake here, esp when it's cold rather than warm as there is a slight eggy flavour when it's warm. The japanese cheesecake are not too sweet and feel really light and fluffy. With the matcha cheesecake, I like the bitterness of the matcha and the contrast with the red beans as well. I'm amazed that the service is always perfect!
Geniebear
I’ve heard from Uncle Tetsu so many times over social media so I was happy to find some time to try this place. The packaging and the friendly staff was unfortunately the best of the experience. I really love cheesecakes but besides the really fluffy textures there is not much to say about this cake. I really missed the flavor of a good cheesecake. Not really what I expected.
Hân Trịnh
The best cheese cake ever! I love how their cheesecake doesn't make you feel sick of even after having a whole cake because it is so soft, spongy with little sugar and not too fat. Love it. The service is so friendly and fast!
Katcha
Went there 9.30pm last night wanting to get a take away cake. According to Zomato it says opening hour Mon-Sun 11am-11pm which is not accurate. The shop was closed when I got there.
Bianca
3.5 rating.tried the honey cupcake (original).lovely flavour just a tad dry so would be better if served warm imo but the flavor was a win! Wish the cheesecakes came in single sizes, they looked delish.
@foodtom
Uncle tetsu is known for their classic fluffy cheesecakes, I have tried the cheesecakes too many times and not one was ever a disappointment!
It has a unique sweet flavour, I enjoyed every single bite of it.
Will be coming back.
AngeLuvFood8
Uncle Tetsu finally arrived in Melbourne. Its first store on Swanston Street opened in late November 2017.

I first went on 14 December 2017 with a girlfriend after our Christmas dinner catch up. We weren't too sure if we made the right choice and afraid that we'd have to wait in queue for quite sometime. But surprisingly the queue moved very fast. I guess there isn't much choice as you either buy the cheesecake which only comes in 1 size and 1 flavour or their madeleines.
🔆MENU🔆
Since opening late last year, they have introduced Matcha Cheesecake, 2 more Madeleine flavours, Japanese puddings and Matcha soft serve! Fantastic!
🔆PRICE🔆
Original Cheesecake $17.99
Vanilla Madeleine $3.50
🔆VERDICT🔆
I bought the original cheesecake and a madeleine on my first visit to Uncle Tetsu. So this review is based upon my first purchase/taste only.

For $3.50 for small cupcake size madeleine, I was disappointed. It was very dense and heavy, it was not enjoyable at all. The consistency was heavier than a muffin. Thankfully my main purpose was to try the cheesecake, so the madeleine was just a side detour!
Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake is amazingly delicious. It is super light and fluffy and so different to your typical western cheesecake and near to perfection to that of Japan texture and flavours.
The cake is made with only 6 ingredients: cream cheese, butter, egg, flour, milk and sugar.

If you havn't been to Uncle Tetsu, then it's worth a visit.

Uncle Tetsu is opened 11am to 11pm daily which is fantastic. But realistically they stop making their cheesecake by mid-evening and most would be gone by 9pm. How do I know, well because most recently ( 28 May 2018), I went around 8.50pm after dining out with friends, wanting to buy a cheesecake to bring home to eat for the weekend, but they were all sold out! I think next time, I have to go straight after work and buy it. Haha!!
Stephanie
I definitely still want to come back and try the cheesecake. The Madeline is soft and had a really creamy matcha flavour. I don’t think I’d try it again thought just because there are other choices. Only worth it if you get the really fresh one I think.
Alijargalb
Had the cheesecake here a few times and it’s not too bad. But not cheesy enough for my liking. It’s better to refrigerate it and heat it up the next day, because the cheese flavour is a lot stronger
KnowingMelbourne
I recently tried the madeleines at Uncle Tetsu, both the vanilla and the chocolate. I liked them, the flavours weren’t overly sweet. A nice cake to have with a coffee or cup of tea. They are quite dense though, I didn’t find them light and fluffy. But I enjoyed them.
Tina
Loved both the orginal cheesecake and the matcha cheesecake! It's delicious- extremely soft and moist; melts in your mouth. It's pricey in relation to the size of the cake but the taste and quality makes it worth it. As for the madeleines, it smells amazing but tastes quite average.
Love Food
Having tried original and matcha cheesecake
I would prefer the original over the matcha flavor
Bought the cold matcha cheesecake
The texture is less spongy than the original. The matcha flavor is quite strong
What I really like is, it’s not very sweet.
Chali Samindi
I love cheesecake in general. Never thought the Japanese cheesecake will be that good! It’s not as dense as your average cheesecake. Very light and airy, which means you can eat more of it! 😄 Absolutely amazing
Melissa
Soft, fluffy and moist cheesecake, fun to poke, but imo wasn't that great in terms of flavour.
I don't think the high price is justified - I could get two desserts that were more satisfying for the price of one of this.
Gurman
Cake was so light and soft....will definitely eat this cake again.

Everything was well balanced.

Hopefully they will have few more outlets in Melbourne very soon.

Julycheee
I'm not sure what I feel about Uncle Tetsu's. The cheesecake is pretty small for the price, and at the end of the day, it's just a cheesecake. The texture is indeed very light. Among the people I shared a cake with, half thought it was nice (because of its lightness and sublety), and the other half thought it was quite plain and uninteresting. Personally I thought the latter. I wouldn't be rushing to get another cake but I might try the madelines next time.
Nay Nay
To my friend that introduced me to this place! Amen! This place is just great! Those matcha cakes were just so good! So soft and so moist and full of flavour!
Jonathan Christian
I tried the famous Uncle Tetsu Cheese Cake and that was bloody delicious! I heard about Uncle Tetsu back when I was in my hometown Indonesia and finally got the chance to taste it here in Melbourne. The cake is fluffy and airy and perfect for light snack without a doubt! Overall delicious dessert!
Yovita Aurora
It’s super great to have this store finally open in Melbourne. This is a famous cheese cake from Japan. I love how soft and cheesy it is in the mouth. You guys seriously should try this
Nadia Loves Food
A friend suggested to try out Uncle Tetsu since her and I haven’t been, so we went after our dinner here and ordered the original cheesecake. We sat down nearby to eat it and boy did it not disappoint! The cake is fluffy and doesn’t break apart one bit, it melts in your mouth and there’s no overpowering flavour of cheese. You can taste the egg but it hits the spot just perfectly well. It’s not your average cheesecake where it’s too much as this is way different. Could probably finish off one cake to yourself lol, also tried the matcha cupcake and that was yummy as anything! Will come here again!

I heart Uncle Tetsu!
Two years ago I lined up for 45 minutes outside an Uncle Tetsu in Hong Kong, on a cold winters night, and managed to snag me one of the last in the final batch of standard cheesecakes that night.
The delicate cloud like softness and subtle sweetness had me hooked in an instant! The next day whilst scavenging the final remnants of the cake, I discovered that the texture had altered to a more creamy, ice-cream like consistency; which I also adored.
Two years later, here we are, with an Uncle Tetsu to call our own in Melbourne, which is true to form as the one I had two years ago! Forget what you know about those typical sickly sweet, dense, diabetes encouraging cheesecakes - you won't need them anymore with Uncle Tetsu in town!
Marika Moore
finally got a chance to try the cheese cake from here. Was very light a fluffy but just a bit eggy. A little disappointed overall with the flavour and price.
Melissa Phu
I bought the matcha pudding, and the matcha cheesecake both delicious. The matcha pudding is smaller than the original but comes with a lower price. As an avid fan of matcha I enjoyed this cheesecake very much. It bounces and the texture is so light and fluffy. However, it is quite light and won’t keep you full. Over time, it does become a bit more dense and shrinks (not to a great extent though). I would definitely buy Uncle tetsu’s cheesecakes again for a special occasion with friends.
Angel Khong
Super fluffy, lightest cheesecake ever (more like a sponge/chiffon cake than your traditional cheesecake) that’s moist with very soft crumbs. Tried some of their madeleines as well and found them very sweet and delicious although not as light as the cheesecakes.
Karlisample
Quite a wait, $17.99 for the cheesecake is a lot if you only want a taste. Would be great if they had a smaller version! We opted for the Madeleine which was light and sweet.
S_foodie
The first time I had Uncle Tetsu’s I flew to Sydney and bought some back to Melbourne so I am happy that they finally opened a store here. Very impressed the first time I had it but there’s not much taste now. However it is still fluffy and definitely worth trying!
C
Different to any kind of cake I've had before. Very Light and fluffy which makes it a very interesting texture! Perfect level of sweetness .
Sylv
Got the matcha and honey Madeleine, they both had a nice flavour but were a bit dry 🙁 price was reasonable and a good snack, the way the cakes were displayed at the window caught my eye so I couldn't resist but to try them 👍
~Happy Neko~
Very creamy and super soft, it’ll melt in your mouth. This cheesecake doesn’t have a lot of fragrant to it, but if you wait in store you can smell the delicious fresh baked goods.
Ignatia
Bought their madeleines because the smell of honey from the store was tempting, but when I tried it... uh oh disappointed :( so mediocre I regret paying $3.5 (each!!) for something that I can get somewhere else with cheaper price. Just not worth it nor worth the try. Now when I pass by the store, the smell of their honey does not attract me anymore
AnotherAsianAbroad
The best lightweight cheesecake ever! I love it it’s super yummy. Tried the Madeleine but didn’t think it was as good. Wish they did miniature cheesecakes though!

Not that great quite disappointed. It’s just fluffy nothing else special. I would rather get a mini hokkaido cheesecake from breadtop for $5. Too expensive for an average cheesecake

Japanese cheesecakes are soft, light, fluffy - a more elegant take on the heaviness which can be felt after eating a more western cheesecake.

For the most part, Uncle Tetsu does ok in it's standard cheesecake which you can get for $18. From this price point alone, this might be a bit too much if you're looking for a desert which 'tops the cake'. Even then, what was received was a dilute cheesecake - not many flavours which can be interpreted, it felt like eating soft bread with a little bit of cheese. You can find lighter meals for less, for sure.

The honey madeline was hard and didn't have a solid flavour. Not too bad, but definitely not great.

For the uninitiated in Japanese cheesecakes, maybe look a bit further in.

I have been waiting for Uncle Tetsu to land in Melbourne ever since they opened up in Sydney - and I was definitely blown away by their cheesecake!

My cake was so freshly baked that it was still a little steamy by the time I got home. The cake is super fluffy and moist (cutting it was like cutting a cloud) and it practically melts in your mouth. Flavour-wise, it is not like your typical Western style cheesecake; it has a very light cheese flavour, a lovely fragrant smell and its just very lightly sweet.

I ended up leaving some in the fridge overnight and it makes the cake denser (a very light mousse texture) and the cheese flavour more intense. I think I personally liked the cake more after it spent the night in the fridge.

Only downside is that for $18, you get a very, very tiny cake which you can easily finish by yourself. Uncle Tetsu also sells Madeleines however, they weren't that amazing. I will definitely be coming back for more cheesecake though.

Woohoo finally got a hold on one of these goodies!!! Heard about these delicious goodies and was very satisfied!! The cheesecake was light and fluffy just as expected. Was afraid it would be too cheesy but thankgod it wasnt. The creaminess and airiness of the cake definately helped. Very different to a normal cheesecake. More like a spongey chiffon. Way too small for the $18 price tag though. Honestly if there was a queue i wouldnt have tried it but got there at 4.30pm and it was empty yay for me!! Feeds about 8 people. Would i get it again..yeah haha!

Finally tried this after eyeing it for so long. Definitely tasted better than I expected! It’s very light, soft and fluffy, almost like it melted in my mouth. Was expecting it to jiggle a lot after seeing so many videos but sadly it didn’t jiggle as much haha. Not a huge cheese fan but didn’t taste much of the cheese so it was good for me. A bit pricey for the size of the cake but would have it again maybe for special occasions.

Ambience 3/5 - it is a small take away place. Food is prepared in front of you. Not a lot of space to accommodate more than 3 people or so in one shot.
Food 4/5- Signature cheese cake is super amazing and a must have. The other desserts have a very caffeine'ish flavour so not many would relish..hence a drop in rating.
Fluffy (cotton-like), melt-in-ypur-mouth, perfectly sweet and subtle flavors makes Uncle Tetsu's cheese cakes one of the best Japanese Cheese Cakes we have had. Totally worth the price (though little steep) and hype. We even loved their madeleines.

Long queue and slow service (extremely slow...like they attend one customer at a time and that could be a pain especially when the customers are indecisive or not good at communicating. Even staffs are very bad at communicating. ) is definitely a spoilsport and thus, misses to score full 5.

A little disappointing (for an asian foodie) :(
I've tasted Japanese styled cheese cakes before and this one here did not have a distinct cheese flavour, so when I ate it and kept eating it to taste the flavour, I couldn't exactly taste what I was supposed to taste and what was expected. The texture however was very soft and dense after refrigerating overnight!! I also tried the madeleine and it was basically like a muffin. It's also quite pricey too so I don't think I will buy this again sorry!! I'm sure a lot have enjoyed Uncle Tetsu's though!

I bought an original cheesecake as I walked past the Swanston St store and there was no line (I hate lining up for stuff!).
It was really fresh and hot out of the oven but I think it tasted better the next day when it has set a little as it's almost like you're inhaling air otherwise!
I probably wouldn't buy it again though unless someone really wanted to try it, pretty expensive for one small cake.

Initially queues were very long, went recently and the wait was not too bad. Depends what time of day as I walked past on another occasion and it was empty. I was worried it would not live up to the hype but I really enjoyed it. I love the texture. Light, moist, spongey. It literally melted in your mouth. I love that it was not very sweet. Serious sweet toothes may be disappointed. If I had to give it one negative it would be that I’d like it to be more cheesy. You have the choice of buying it warm or from the fridge. I opted for the warm meaning I could then try it cold after putting my leftovers in the fridge. Having it cold is supposed to intensify the cheese flavour. You could even heat it back up in the microwave too. Costwise it does seem dear although small cakes like that go for more with decorations at breadtop or even the cheesecake shop. So minus the toppings it’s probably on par?! I won’t be buying this all the time but it would definitely be an awesome treat now and again.
