📝: Who loves a good teppanyaki? Food cooked right in front of you by your personal chef. Be fascinated by their talented skills as they light up the fire in front of you. Be it seafood or meat, they’ll grill it to perfection.

❤️: We enjoyed the range of appetizers that came before the main teppanyaki, including the Abalone, Sashimi, Fried Zucchini with Cheese. The mains included seafood and Wagyu Teppan. My favorite though, was probably the dessert Daifuku with sesame and greentea ice cream.

However, what I’d like to comment was that the portions were really small, and service was incredibly slow. We weren’t served teppan until we were sat down for 2 hours and had to watch other counters being served....

We were invited to Tokyo Teppanyaki tonight and had the pleasure of experiencing some delicious dishes in addition to their teppanyaki offering. Our mixed sushi and sashimi platter was beautifully plated and extremely fresh.

The tempura special was not your typical tempura dish you generally see at a Japanese restaurant and we were excited to try a filled zucchini flower in the lightest of batters as well as chicken wrapped with purple sweet potato and then flash fried in the tempura batter. This is well worth trying and I definitely recommend adding some entrees to your teppanyaki banquet to make it even more enjoyable.

Again some issues with timing, the venue was opened when we arrived at 5.55pm but we didn’t receive any food until 6.29pm. Whilst they had us down for a 6.30pm booking the venue itself is open so if you were a walk in you should reasonably expect to be served faster and they should probably have one of the hot plates on in case of early diners. Fortunately the yummy cocktails did the job of placating us once again

Original review
I was delighted to be invited to Tokyo Teppanyaki one of Melbourne’s longest run teppanyaki restaurants and a theatrical experience to say the least. We were a bit annoyed upon arrival at 5.15pm that they could not serve us until 6pm. Google says they open at 5pm, and Zomato says 5.30pm so 5.15pm seems like a serviceable arrival time. Fortunately the mango daiquiris kept us occupied until the stroke of 6 when we engaged in the Osaka banquet.

The venue itself has a stunning ambiance. The delightful decor places you securely in Japan and the atmosphere at the hot plate is as sizzling as the food. The chefs are engaging and entertaining, creating quite the show throwing bowls of fried rice and egg into your mouth. It’s definitely a special and unique dining destination.

Food wise we thoroughly enjoyed all of the dishes. Some highlights were definitely the beautiful prawns which were just so sweet and went perfectly with all the sauces provided. The tenderloin steak was also a favourite, and special mention to the miso soup which I don’t generally enjoy but this one was well balanced and not overly salty.

The service was also exemplary as one often experiences in a Japanese restaurant and the staff were extremely attentive to our every whim. I would certainly recommended this for a fun night out

It was a rainy Melbourne might that we were invited along for an early sitting at Tokyo Teppanyaki at the South Yarra end of Chapel street. This cute little restaurant frontage opens into a deep and ornately decorated space which was very visually stimulating and traditional. We were here to try the Osaka Teppanyaki set menu which I was excited to try.

We started off with a couple of cocktails. I couldn’t go past that middori based Japanese Slipper (one of the only times I like melon flavour). KD went for the Little Geisha which was a kiwifruit vodka blend and was a cheerful drink

The Osaka menu has springs rolls for entree but we were presented with the seafood entry from Tokyo set menu... they must have known we like sashimi and the caviar that coated the sushi rolls popped away refreshingly. The wasabi was good quality and strong for those of you who like the hit.

We also had the miso soup which was a flavoursome example... one of the tastier we’ve had in recent time.

We were nicely set up for the main event and our funny but seriously skilled chef put on quite the show right from the get go with the way he greased the grill to de-viening the prawns mid cooking, and so incredibly fast. Blink and you miss it. The chef was incredible with the implements in his tool belt and the way he moved them around using a pepper shaker like he was flipping bottles behind a bar making exotic cocktails.

If you like your food to arrive piping hot to your plate then this is the place for you.

Prawns were juicy sweet and fabulous perfect with the chilli sauce that had a hint of tomato.
Mushrooms were juicy and chicken succulent and melt in your mouth with a teriyaki sauce. Calamari, tender and quite lemony, with a hint of garlic and that fabulous char flavour. Steak was flamed and cooked a perfect medium rear.

We both failed miserably at the audience participation part of the evening... neither of us were able to catch the masterfully sliced eggs in our mouths, although we had fun trying. Neither of us was game to try it with the rice!

Our meal finished with fried rice and crisped up prawn legs, Mighty crunchy with a real snack of prawn flavour.

It was a great set up and a friendly environment, I sat next to a regular and had a lovely chat around the grill.

Certainly an enjoyable social evening. Crazy busy on the weekends I’m told.

Thanks so much for having us.

Teppanyaki is so much fun and always a great time to bond with the family or friends and someones randoms that happen to share a table with you. I really enjoyed the catching the fried rice at the end of the meal . The food they give you here is plenty as well, staff however was a little disorganised- had to ask for water multiple times

It was our 1st time there for dinner and overall experience was good. We had ordered several a la carte dishes some of which I would recommend:

Sushi and Sashimi Platter - this was one of my highlights being beautifully presented and tasted incredibly fresh 😋

Soft Shell Crab Tempura - these babies were fried well with a good level of crispiness on the outside and juicy meat inside 🙌

Tenderloin Steak (Kobe style) - my main highlight being super tender, succulent and melting in the mouth! 👄

The four king prawns were grilled well making it flavorful and tasty but we would have liked an extra one or two more.

Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner but be prepared to spend for these items given the restaurant’s location and cuisine.

We went to this place twice and will love to try their other menu since just few block from outlet home. My son Love their Pumpkin decoration just Very cute. They have a very “Japanese” Taste Ramen and miso Soup. The place is bit too small for family or person with kids have to fold the stroller otherwise it’s gonna took many space.
The staff also friendly

More advice This place not suitable for family with kids

Order the Tokyo set, the miso soup was so good, the sashimi was so fresh with the soy sauce. Yakitori was grilled nicely and was good dressing on top. My favourite dish was the tenderloin steak.

The concept at tokyo teppenyaki is a lot of fun. Our chef was lovely and made the whole experience quite enjoyable. We don't think there's much value in the vegetarian set- 50$ for a quarter of an eggplant, 3 bits of tofu, 3 slices of pumpkin and zucchini and some mushrooms. However the osaka set was very generous with all the meats and seafood and seemed a lot more worthwhile.

The only 'live-show' style teppanyaki that I know of in Melbourne. It is certainly very entertaining; one of the acts involved the chef tossing either a shrimp or fried rice directly into your howl. While it was definitely a fun dining experience, the food was just sup-par. It was good, but nothing as exciting as the experience.

Details: This restaurant was an awesome idea for a birthday! We were all gathered around the teppankyaki table having fun eating pieces of chicken thrown in the air 😁

WARNING: Do not expect to be full!!!!! The main part of it (for me anyways) was the skills of the chef and the exquisite tastes but not the actual fullness of my belly 😅 (if you are doing the teppankyaki and not just coming for dinner).

Decor: The restaurant is set up to make you truly feel like you're in Japan ♡

Wow this is the best teppanyaki I have been to yet. The food was amazing, cooked to perfection by the chef who slices and dices the food in front of you and throughout the lunch I had there he did some well timed customer participation games. If you want a great teppanyaki experience you should definitely give Tokyo Teppanyaki ago you won't regret it

Tokyo Teppanyaki is a, like the name suggests, Teppanyaki restaurant that has been open for over 28 years! Most of the interior details, decor and paintings were crafted and designed by John the owner, giving the restaurant a unique design that you would not have expected looking at it from the street.

We were fortunate enough tonight to have Hiro as our chef - he is the best skilled chef at Tokyo Teppenyaki! Not only was he extremely talented with the utensils, he was also thoroughly entertaining!

Located in the trendy South Yarra precinct, Tokyo Teppanyaki is the destination for an entertaining and interactive dining experience. . At Tokyo Teppanyaki, customers can watch chefs cook their meals right in front of them on the hot plate. The chefs are engaging, and even toss the food for you to catch in bowls and mouths.

Definitely something everyone must experience.
I came here with a group of 6 recently and all of us left happy with how the night played out.
The food was nice and the banquet was very filling, the chef was very chirpy and friendly and the atmosphere was excellent.
The chef even gave us a free round of asahi.
If you haven't tried Tokyo teppanyaki, I suggest you book soon, because you're missing out

I had my first date here over 4 years ago with my now partner and we come back every now and then to reminisce and have a bit of fun as with a toddler it's hard to come to places like this unless if he's at the oldies.

First it's SO MUCH FUN. Seeing our chef work the teppanyaki grill was great. We had a teriyaki chicken, Kobe beef and then chicken fried rice which were all 5 star - chicken was tender, beef even though I eat it well done melted in your mouth and the rice was a bit crunchy and so flavourful. Add a few cocktails in... So fun. Will come here in date nights more often!

Ive been to a couple of teppanyakis in Melbourne and this has to be the best out of all.

We went on a quiet tuesday night and was celebrating a birthday. The service was very good, they were always attentive. The food was exceptional, very fresh and very delicious. What captured me however, was the entertaining chef Hong. He was very informative, funny and amusing. Best of all he had some games to entertain us during preparations.

Highly recommended and would definitely go back and refer to my friends

Stepped in for a bit of lunch with a friend and really enjoyed the food that they had. The teppanyaki looked nice (2 couples were 'participating' when we arrived and it all looked/smelt great). We ordered the Sashimi and Gyozas to start. Both extremely yummy. Fresh Salmon and Tuna against the delecate but falvoursome Japanese dumplings. had the Salmon sushi and Chicken noodles next. The noodles were amazing. dressed in a salty/sweet sauce and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Waiter was very nice. want to go back for teppanyaki. A la carte menu is great though.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food. Set menus are a little over priced, however the food is cooked fresh in front of you in an interactive and fun approach, making it worth the extra $$$. Great for large groups (we had 10 people) but do note that your clothes will smell like smoke afterwards from all the grilling going on!

Tokyo Teppanyaki is a bustling restaurant on Chapel Street that does teppanyaki in the “Hong Kong” style. You purists out there know what I’m talking about!! So instead of merely cooking your meal in front of you, these chefs get a bit of interaction going and get a laugh out of everyone – think egg throwing, rice bowl throwing, catching food in mouths… We had the Osaka set (on a Groupon voucher), which included a starter plate of a spring roll, california roll and some deep fried chicken and a miso soup; then prawns, calamari, chicken, beef, some vegies, fried rice, dessert, tea or coffee and sake. All of the food was tasty, fresh and cooked well, but I wouldn’t quite call it awesome (in fact the starter plate was a bit average). The portions were definitely enough to fill even a big eater and the teppanyaki skills of the chef were very fancy. Watching him de-shell and de-vein the king prawns on the hot plate in a matter of secon

I have always wanted to experience teppanyaki dining. When I saw that Groupon has a special deal for a six course teppanyaki lunch at Tokyo Teppanyaki on Chapel St, I couldn’t just ignore it. That particular voucher is no longer available however last time I checked (and this is last week) there was a nine course teppanyaki dinner version of the Groupon voucher. The reason I bought this voucher to begin with despite the appealing deal was because I was dining with a friend who for every meal we’ve gone out to eat, would not let me pay. I’ve had about enough of this behaviour so I decide to take my friend out to lunch with the Groupon voucher and that way at least I’d get to pay for once instead. Okay, so that problem was solved. I decided to head over to the restaurant early because I just happened to be in the area, happily snapping away at some random objects at a nearby market. I realised that I was the first customer of the morning, when I noticed that the staff were having their l
