Strategically located super close to my hospital. Probs the only restaurant where I took quite awhile to decide what I wanted to order bc they have soooo much variety! 😍 despite my very large appetite, I ended up ordering the crispy noodles which lasted me an extra meal! I had to take away cause they’re so generous with their portions! Just bring a takeaway container when you visit! Hahahaha. I even tried their salted egg chicken and rice and it’s so yum as well.

a nice restaurant that serves a variety of asian cuisines, mostly Chinese and Malaysian though. I came here at first to satisfy my char kuey teow cravings, and it is honestly the closest one to the dishes in Malaysia I could find in Melbourne (I've tried other places but not the same). After a few visits I saw reviews about the salted egg chicken, and wow it was yum. I had for a few visits before I decided to be adventurous and try the bak kut teh today. I am really starting to like this place. Prices are reasonable to the portions. I'm moving out of Carlton soon but if I have an Asian craving I'd come here just for it :)

🍴As an Asian, I’m glad that the food at rice bar is pretty authentic and able to satisfy the #asianfoodcravings. The portion is quite large and there’s a good variety of Malaysian/ Chinese rice and noodle options. The #saltedeggchicken was well-done with its crispy skin and tender meat. While the sauce was a bit oily and perhaps could do with slight spice, the salted egg flavours were there and it was an overall yummy meal.

Fast service, good value. Wonton noodle soup was a good size. The BBQ pork and noodles were very nice, wonton not extremely flavoursome but still very tasty overall.
They've got a really wide Chinese/Malaysian menu here and the food comes really quick. The chefs all look very experienced and have no issue dealing with large volumes. Most of the dishes we've tried are pretty good, including fried rice and noodle dishes. At roughly $14 for a meal it's not the cheapest, but for the decent quality of food it's worth coming here if you're craving something and live nearby.
这家店算是墨大附近有名的中餐馆了，菜的种类很多，面啊饭啊粥类的都有。之前都是和闺蜜来的，她都点的卤肉蛋饭，忘记拍照，慢慢的一盆肉啊，她表示非常开心。
今天和男票来，我点了印度炒面，这个极力推荐啊！配菜非常多，而且也好吃，超出了我的预期。男票点的烧鸭烧肉面，不得不说，这家店给的肉的量是非常大方了，他到最后都没吃完。
非常适合平时没有很多时间吃饭的人来，上菜速度是很快的
Chose the Thai chicken rice, love the flavor so much! Not very busy at lunch time and the staff are friendly. The meat and rice are big enough for one person and it really tastes great. Worth trying!
Situated near Melbourne Uni, this is my go-to place for lunch if union house gets too crowded. Rice bar has a pretty extensive menu with a wide range of dishes to choose from, but you can never go wrong with the rice dishes. The salted fried chicken w/ rice is probably my favourite thing off the menu as it tastes very similar to the salted egg dishes I had back in Singapore (which is a good thing!). Furthermore, the food here is very reasonably priced :)
This place is only a couple minutes walk from Melbourne uni, and, along with the student price tag, it is an ideal place to grab a cheap lunch or dinner. There are many tables, so finding a seat is not hard. I really enjoyed eating at this place; their food is authentic Chinese food at an extremely reasonable price. It also tastes very homey and they are quick to serve your food, which is a bonus after a long day studying. Definitely check this place out!
No nonsense asian fast food located conveniently across from Melbourne Uni. Had the amazing Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Ribs on rice for only like $13. Great feed after a tough day of lectures and assignments

The only reason I gave 4 star was because of the service, staff was unfriendly, not smiling, but, that’s okay, everyone had their own bad day.
Great place for Asian food - Malaysian, Singaporean, Thai etc. The staff here are wonderful and the meals come out quick. Affordable and filled with students.
The only bad meal I've had here was the congee (tasteless), but everything else is great. If you're in the mood for casual and heart Asian fare - give this place a try!

We wanted a quick meal in Carlton area and when we found a parking right at the front of Rice Bar, we thought we will give this place a try! The restaurant has quite big seating area both indoor and outdoor but not busy on Saturday night. Once we're given the menu, we're surprised to see such a long menu and took awhile to make decision and had to turn the waiter away a couple of times because we can't make up our minds! Alas, we picked Bak kut teh which is top of the chef recommendation list, satay chicken and combination noodles with egg gravy. This place serve complimentary Chinese tea which is a bonus. Service is incredibly fast as the food arrive to our table in less than 10 min! I enjoyed the combination noodles and glad that have picked green chilli to go with it. My bak kut teh and satay chicken didn't look like how the pictures were presented on the menu, smaller portion and missing the "ketupat" or packed rice that normally serve with the satay. Whilst the chicken satay is missing the charcoal bbq taste, the peanut sauce is very tasty but should have been served in a separate dipping bowl like they shown in the picture on the menu, not poured over the satay and cucumber. I wouldn't mind come back for a quick meal.
i love their salted egg chicken ❤️❤️❤️ definitely will come back every week to satisfy my craving of that particular menu LOL will try other item from their menu soon!

You can never go wrong with the salted egg yolk chicken. Great customer service. I didnt hv enough change last time but they let me off saying it was okay.
Went there as a group of 4 last night. We had seafood chay kuey tew (noodles), seafood red curry, pork with noodles and kang kung green vegetable in chilli shrimp paste. The food was excellent and authentic Malaysian. Great value and free flowing tea. Its just off the main drag off Lygon St so could easily go un noticed. A hidden gem for Asian food in Carlton. I will certainly be going back
Mainly malaysian chinese foods. Came here several times and ordered beef brisket on rice, roast duck, etc. Reasonable priced. Usually crowded with students.

Great casual place. I love the fried chicken ribs topped with salted egg yolk, its so fragrant and crunchy without being too dry. Service here is fast and efficient, Rice Bar is definitely the go-to place for quick cheap food.

So quick its questionable. I was literally on my way home and thought needed to get dinner and this was the first Asian place I saw as I was craving Asian food. I literally ordered the beef with Chinese broccoli and satay chicken. and less than 3 minutes it was ready. It tasted ok, the place was packed and with all the uni's around I can see why. not sure if i would go here again.
Great salted egg chicken ribs, wish they salted more things (pork, seafood, etc). I always had an issue with portion here, my friends always seems to get a lot more or a lot less then me when we ordered the same thing. Othet than that, this place is great!
I came here because my car's engine blew up and i have to wait for the technician, while waiting i saw this restaurant at the corner. I love Asian food, and some of it comes from Malaysia. As the title said, the Bak Kut Teh was surprisingly delicious when i ordered for the first time last winter. The service was okay and the place is clean, not really a bad choice.
My favourite eating place when I am craving for a good combination hor fun. Have been coming to this place for the last 8 yrs. generous with ingredients and portions, most importantly tasty food!!
Other fav are the Thai fried rice and the salted fish fried rice.

Good variety .. Like the salted fish and chicken fried rice. Staff is helpful - esp the young girl with glasses who offered good suggestions.( and speak better English than the manager/chef)

Delicious. Tried it with 2 of my other friends. some of the dishes are too sweet but the rest are not too bad.
Just know what to order .... Rice Bar has an epic menu. It spans many pages, and the resulting food is a nod towards the 'jack of all trades, master of none' philosophy.
However, if you can luck out and choose one of the dishes that is made well - it can be a great value dining experience.
I've found the perennial Beef Brisket Rice special and the Spicy Salted Chilli Chicken on Rice to be consistent and to my liking.
I've had many others that we're 'average', but the friendly staff and low prices still resulted in a satisfactory experience.
The only thing I've ever eaten here is the fried tofu in chilling but it was amazing! I used to buy it all the time.
I had a delicious vegetarian plate and my husband loved his seafood. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful. Annoyingly, it is cash only.

I have ordered grilled pork on rice, grilled chicken on rice and prawn spring rolls. pork and chicken are very chewy, moist, and very very tasty. Prawn spring rolls are good at average.
I will definitely come back to try more different dishes here.
Fantastic food, always amazing. Have been coming here for quite some time - Carlton’s best kept secret. Always looked after and made to feel welcome. Also perfect for a quick takeaway. Very affordable, best spot on Lygon St.
Had lunch here and really enjoyed it. I ordered Beef, brisket & brisket fat (Táì Nam Gàu) which was really well flavoured. The soup and raw beef were seperated for travel and the attention to packaging for takeaway was excellent. The staff were really friendly and prepared the egg coffee from scratch. It was one of the few places in Melbourne I have found serving the delicious egg coffee!! Thank you.
I came here for the first time and ordered a vegetarian noodle soup. It was very delicious and it’s good proportion too. The service was great and fast but I was the only customer at the time so not sure what’s it’s like when it’s busy. I will definitely eat here again. And the place is clean.
Vietnamese gem on Lygon St- great value for money
We recently tried Saigon Pho and was impressed by the value for money. We tried the beef pho, bun bo hue and the broken rice pork special. All three were delicious. The broth in both soups was perfect. The broken rice even had the egg cake that is sometimes missing from other places. We also tried the spring rolls but I can't comment on them since they were devoured by my so I never got to try any.
The service is good and the food came out quite fast.
Overall, I would recommend this place and we will be back soon.
