4.0 Very Good
Caught up with some friends at this wine bar which has an old school setting and serves up uncomplicated small dishes to share, perfect for grazing. There’s enough on the menu to turn it into a full dinner if you desire (we always do).
We arrive here just before happy hour ends and order up a few drinks, I can’t pass up a negroni whenever I see it and especially at those prices! Very solid, bitter notes and citrusy. Later on that night I also got their cat’s pyjamas which had a strong gin taste mixed with Cocchi Americano and a grapefruit twist.
We start off with a charcuterie mixed platter which consisted of Capocollo (cured pork neck) which was my favourite with nice streaks of fat, Fuet Anis (Catalan fennel salami) and Navarro (air dried paprika sausage). Paired with some crusty bread and pickled vegetables which taste like the ones my mum makes at home and quite bright.
Some other goodies were padron peppers prepared simply by blistering, small drizzle of olive oil and some coarse sea salt. They’re always a winner in my books and are on auto-order. We also had some mussels with artichoke, olive and migas which gave it a crunchy texture. We did find the artichoke absent and wished I had another to see if it was there, it was pretty good regardless.
We also shared some twice cooked baby octopus in melted tomatoes, it was so soft I could cut it with a spoon! On the skillet was my personal favourite, chorizitos, onions and cider. Mild bite-sized sausages with a generous amount of sweet onions. We still had some bread left and this was used to mop up the sauces from the two dishes.
We didn’t see any desserts on the menu but as my friends were on keto we were happy to share a cheese platter which consisted of Ibores (raw goat’s milk), Valdeon (mixed milk blue) and Arpea (sheep’s milk). The blue cheese paired well with the slices of apple which took some of the funky edge off and the fig paste with the others to give it some sweetness. Also paired with bread, crackers and almonds.
Staff were exceptional from start to finish, they made sure that we maximise their happy hour session, changing plates when required and just genuinely friendly. Very relaxed vibes and funky tunes to ease you in.

Went to this cute bar last Friday... their wine selections are fantastic... had the most delicious cocktails ever.. and my favourite so far is the Jalapeño Margarita.. so so so yum! The service is beyond friendly, the mixologists gives you different drinks that you never drink before and it was such a great experience to know you can actually like drinks that you’d never thought you chose to order.
I’ll definitely come back for dinner & order more of that jalapeño margarita :D
PS: they have hot toddy ;)
My partner and I called in here for a pre dinner drink. Initially the service was excellent, really friendly and professional.
I ordered a Pinot Noir and my partner had an orange wine. My Pinot was delicious, it had good depth of flavour and it was easy drinking.
The orange wine was very good too but for me, more of an acquired taste lol
They also serve a number of food dishes. This place was great, such a relaxing fun place to visit.
Fantastic fit out, staff, alcohol and, above and beyond quality of food. I love this place and couldn’t recommend it enough, it is a must. Can’t wait to return.
Great service, beautiful food & reasonably priced. Only criticism is there was no gluten free substitute available for the bread or crackers on the cheese plate.
Really solid wine list and cocktails, good food, great space and friendly staff make this place a winner every time. So nice to see something with some soul up this end of Brunswick st. Gets better with each visit.

Perfect place for a few drinks. The cafe that was here (Argo Loves Company - a shame to see it go) has been perfectly transformed into a super cute little bar, with a few tables and window seats available. It's table service and the wait staff were awesome, and it looked as though there was a function room on the way to the bathroom (though I guess it wouldn't be that private). Such a beautiful place, away from the craziness that is the heart of Brunswick Street. Highly recommended.
Nov’17 update - went for dinner on a Monday night. There was hardly anyone there. Had some lovely wine and a few dishes. Not cheap, but all the dishes were yum and free range meat :) service was friendly.
Sept’17 - Went to Amarillo for a coffee although I realise that's probably not their specialty. Lovely looking bright space. Service was very nice and friendly. Had a coffee which was not great. Too much froth, too thick froth and the flavours just weren't great, too chocolate-y. Although when I got further into the drink I started minding it less. After reading the other reviews I might have to come back for evening drinks and food!
Tasty, inventive menu for snacking and group dining. Focused drink list, try the Austrian Rose! Really friendly crew who are helpful. Nice clean mid-century decor feel
Went to Amarillo on the recommendation of a friend, had a delicious mandarin creme catalan, amazing cava brut and an even more amazing waiter Nick. Highly recommended Amarillo for the food, drink and service. Thanks for a great experience Nick, I'll be back soon for sure!
First visit was very enjoyable.
Yummy food (share plates) and good wine selection -well priced.
Great service - had fun interacting with the Amarillo team.
Very cool local with share plates and snacks. Breakfast options are really interesting and great value. Good wines by the glass and knowledgable staff. Awesome addition to Brunswick St.
Great customer service and great vibe. Good selection of drinks. May have enjoyed a drink or three. Smells amazing but no food consumed at this time
House red for happy hour, the eggplant special, mussels, and figs with goat curd and hazelnuts. Attentive service and very good wine.
Lovely selection of wine, small indoor and outdoor seating areas. Staff are very kind and helpful!
A really good neighbourhood bar, laid back, great for a drink and a snack (take note of kitchen open days/times). Staff are always lovely and very accommodating. Great happy hour too! Has the vibe of a back street Catalonian tapas bar, chilled, good food and good booze. Our local go-to.
Felt peachy and golden at this cute bar come bistro with friendly staff, happy hour and a very accommodating menu. Even mid week it was bustling and full of joy. Highly recommend 👌
Perfect spot for a nice drink, great snacks and good tunes + super friendly staff.
The place has just the right vibe of good food and wine without being pretentious.
Easy to go to. Good vibes. Enjoyable time with great small eats. Will be back. Noise levels great we could hear each other.
Amarillo does all things well and evenly. It isn’t an obvious wine bar but when assessed on the breadth of grape-based beverages it trumps most others. Aperitifs may be a Manzanilla sherry from Sanlúcar de Barrameda or a tumbler of white port over ice from Porto. Proceed through to digestives and stickies like Pedro Ximenez stopping for an Austrian rose along the way. The wines are more continental than local and the food is a riff on Catalonian guerrilla cooking with most dishes small to shareable. Amarillo is a Melbourne bar at its best: small but highly curated, warm but professional, with a smart and sophisticated fit-out that’s ultimately warm and welcoming.
