Before the lockdown, I went to Hwatu for an easy catchup with my friends!
Ordered:
🥘 Spicy Sausage Hot pot (large): army style hotpot with pork belly, spam, sausage, rice cake, baked beans, mixed veggies & ramen with 2 steamed rice ($35.00)
🍗 Fried chicken: half and half original and spicy
🌽 Corn cheese
🥞 Korean pancake
Review:
The quality of food at Hwatu is pretty good, but what was better was the quantity. So affordable per person, especially if you don't add on a drink 🧐. My friend paid around $20 for his portion! Our friend paid less than $20 and he was full!!
For the food, the corn cheese was also unique and delicious. The budae jjigae was also delicious, with lots of hearty ingredients inside the stew. Everything else was okay as well!
Seated upstairs, they had fun decor. They've decorated the inside to look like you're sitting in a tarp, making it very Korean-esque. It brought some of my friends back to their time in Korea 🤣.
Definitely consider Hwatu on your list if you're in the Lygon st area. A great place to catch up with friends.
Had chives pancake, tofu soup and fried chicken - boneless spicy and original with bones. Everything was delicious! We were seated upstairs, which has more of a street food feeling - round aluminium table, small round chairs and blue tarp covering the walls. Good dining experience overall.
Minor point: we added corn cheese and beer to our order and had to cancel cause they took too long.
Here for the second visit. The food was excellent and the staff are always very welcoming, they made every effort to provide excellent service. Would definitely recommend!
Pork Belly Sizzling and Seafood Tofu Hotpot are my favourite! Yum yum!
Love Korean food!!! also Uber eat. I can enjoy the super delicious and hot food at 10:00pm. can stay warm at home. love this spicy food for my supper. I order uber eat twice in a month , had good experiences and food are up to stand . will try to dine in with friends next time.
We had ordered boneless fried chicken (extremely spicy version) through UberEats. Best Korean chicken ever!The chicken was tasty and just had the right amount of sauce. Absolutely yum 💯 Added this to my list of cures for late night hunger pangs 😬

Lygon Street does not only have an Italian restaurant but this Korean lunch store. They provide valuable lunch for us today. The lunch box includes purple rice that is my favorite and some small dishes also taste amazing. The beef is tender and fresh. The Bibimbab come with a good homemade sauce and soft rice, which is perfect to mix them together. They also have special for a drink, the milkshake tastes good that is rich in milk taste and not that oily. It is a good place for lunch.
Service is impeccable! The waiters really knew his food and what to recommend which the Creamy Garlic cheese sauce with the chicken is a must.
The ramen with the rice cake was delicious and the chives pancake was soft and crispy. The sauce really adds that extra oomph. Definitely a cool place to check out and eat with ya gal pals
和亲爱的室友一起来的，本来一直在lygon街走来走去都没注意到这家店，光线太暗。今天中午冒着变胖的风险也要来吃炸鸡。嘻嘻
店的装修需要先吐槽一下，刚刚提到的，光线太暗，不容易被人发现，中午来的时候整个店也就我们两个人。
菜的量还是可以的，我们两个人点了一个half的boneless chicken，甜辣口味，虽然不是很辣但味道还是不错的。石锅拌饭，没有放在石锅里面，但看在量很多的份上，给个好评！最后是炒年糕拉面，比我想象中的量多！味道也是很传统的韩国餐厅的炒年糕味儿，但如果把它当主食的话，会有些腻。
室友说这家的seafood pancake不错，但我俩胃口有限，今天就没有点。下次可以再来试试～
Korean food is always a great hangover food! This place, food is not bad but very positive experience here because of customer service! Awesome guy working in the front. He gave us free extra rice (because it’s about to close and maybe they don’t want to chuck it). Kimchi jjigae always the bomb! Chicken was great, me and the guys were fighting for it. Fun night. Positive experience here.

Looked like they did take care of their customers in detail as they packed my order exceptionally carefully. Even gave us banchan served for 2 people
I tried the dumpling and kimchi soup. My friend had their corn cheese and bibimbab. And we were all satisfied!!!
Definitely will spend sometime to visit and try their bbq :)

Kbbq is a great meal that could easily go wrong, but this place does not fit in that category. We came slightly earlier than most other customers, so there was only one guy working at the time and when more people came he was very busy, continuously going up and down the restaurant. Like more kbbq places, they bbq and cut up your meat for you. We ordered the Cho-Dan set with the seafood soft-tofu stew. The soup was a little bland, it usually tastes better at other restaurants, but the meat was great. Short ribs were very nice, scotch fillet was a little tough because he left it on for a bit too long, but the marinated beef ribs were absolutely delicious. Like every Korean restaurant should, it comes with complementary side dishes which can be refilled if you finish it early, although we had to ask twice for kimchi. Great place to come, good vibes and located just a few tram stops from the CBD.
Edit: Their kimchi stew and seafood pancakes are delicious, and the Hong-Dan kbbq set is delicious. However they need to pay closer attention to washing their lettuce, I noticed there was dirt on two pieces when I went the second time. (-0.5 rating)

Good thing we booked the start of the dinner block at 5.30pm as the restaurant quickly fillled up within an hour. We also noticed a few walk in customers leaving disappointed as they were not able to get a table since the place was fully booked.
For a warm evening, it was nice that the front door was open as we enjoyed dinner while observing the bypasser on the iconic Lygon St. The staff was attentive and ensured that they make time to cook our meat. We did felt that they seemed under the pump as food took some time to come out for some tables. There was only 3 staff for the night and the chef was between cooking and serving customers.
As for food we had the Chung Dan set which was plenty for 2; this set gives you 3 types of meat (chicken, pork, and beef), soup, side of mushroom, salads, and rice. Portions was big and is great value for the price and staff was happy to give extra sides when we ran out and asked for more. The meat was tender and fresh although the spicy chicken marinate was a bit bland. The soup was our favourite as it was flavourful with a generous amount of tofu and seafood, in addition it was served bubbling in a Korean stone bowl.

Missed out the soy garlic sauce for the Korean Fried Chicken, but overall it was good. Chicken was crispy and moist. The best dish was the Beef Pancake. Quite a unique dish that hardly found on other Korean eating places. The giblet on a hotplate with garlic also nice.
Rice balls were amazing and spicy chicken feet was da bomb! Would definitely come back again 👍 fried chicken was really yum as well! And there was no queue which was definitely a plus!
Unfortunately not the best experience for us in Melbourne for Korean bbq. Perhaps the restaurant was understaffed as there was only one waitress in the restaurant this evening. She also had difficulty understanding what a bowl was and she brought plates instead! Most of the time, we were left alone to cook and cut the meats ourselves. The Korean bbq banquet was well priced with the Groupon voucher and food was fresh, delicious and of decent portions for two.
This was undoubtedly one of the best Korean BBQ experiences we have come across in Melbourne.
The quality meats on offer and generous serving sizes definitely made it a rather memorable and definitely satisfying meal.
After seeing a Facebook post advertising its ‘1kg pork belly set’, my friends and I came the day after wanting to try this place out. The layout was quite spacious which was good, the 1kg pork belly set.. literally felt like a 1kg belly busting set! There was 10 strips of (what looked like 100g) lightly seasoned pork belly, accompanied by a side of mushrooms and a leafy green mix. Besides the fact that we over ordered (as always) for a table of 4, food was definitely worth coming back for.
This Korean place is set up like a street stall that sells stuff for people who drink. I found their menu quite authentic. Loved their stew range. If u're not afraid of trying stuff like beef intestines, blood sausage or pork hock, this is a place for you. Their stew portion is huge, for around $40 it can feed 3 people easy. We tried their fried chicken too, nothing too special about the chicken, it's good but u can get it in pretty every Korean places. If u wanna try the stew, go with a group of friends, so u can try different dishes as well. Definitely will be back to try other stew :)

Had dinner here with my work mates! Love the atmosphere and service! The whole chicken was so crunchy yet not dry inside and amazing spicy cheese chicken !! will be back very soon!!!!!!
Have never actually dine here but ordered the foods through uber eats, reallyyyy satisfied with the foods. Ordered the same foods twice; kimchi jjigae and boneless fried chicken (original flavour) and love it sooo much, the taste was perfectly delicious. I once received an abundant portion of kimchi jjigae
Been there for so many times and I always order Soup and Stew which perfectly match with Riceballs and Korean beer / wine. Beef Tartare is also one of my favourites and it worths trying if you don't mind having raw food. Staff are friendly but it would be perfect if the food could come a bit faster.
Little pricey but the food was delicious! The chicken took a pretty long time to come and rest of the food was almost finished by then though.
The boneless chicken here (the soy garlic flavour is our go-to hit) has become such a regular staple in our household's diet that we've dedicated one night per month for a hwatu boneless chicken feast. I used to be a gami chicken wing fanatic but I haven't looked back eversince that fateful night when we say hwatu on ubereats. Aside from the boneless chicken, other dishes like the spicy pork belly stew, seafood pancakes and their bibimbap bowls are worth a try.
***we recently tried the Ginseng Chicken soup, Chilli cheese chicken and the kimchi fried rice and they were all 👌👌👌
Love the spicy cold noodles here!! Its so refreshing on a hot summers day/night. I really like that they leave the spicy sauce and vinegar? on the side for you to self add. I wish it was closer so i can eat it more often!
Been back many times because the place is spectacular. Very authentic Korean food. Came back today to try the Ginseng Chicken Soup and it was amazing. The soup was full of the earthy Ginseng and traditional medicine flavours. Very well made.

Had a very good experience here tonight. When I look at the menu, I found there're many traditional Korean food that other Korean restaurant doesn't have, like the spicy chicken feet(must try), raw crab, steam egg, rice ball and the pork skin etc..feels like I was in Korea. Also I had tried the charcoal bbq, the wagyu were so juicy with different sauces and kimchi. Floor staff were very helpful, all the dishes taste yum, will definitely come again and recommend to my friends:)
As one of the only Korean restaurants open on the predominantly Italian Lygon Street, Hwatu does not have any direct competition, however they have to compete with the business of all the other restaurants on one of Melbourne's most famous culinary hotspots. Another night of Uber Eats and my partner requested for cold noodles if I was going to order Korean. Hwatu was the only one that I found which was open and had cold noodles. Noticing that the spicy cold noodles came with top shells, we were intrigued enough to order them and also our favourite chicken giblets. While this may sound like there's not much food, when it arrived we were gobsmacked by the amount of buckwheat noodle that was more than enough to feed 2. I was soon very happily slurping up the yummy noodles but too bad my partner (who was the one who chose this dish) found it too spicy and stopped after a few mouthful. Those who have low chilli tolerance, be warned - a fairly decent level of heat is present. The top shells were a bit chewy (not very fresh or overcooked, perhaps?) but we definitely appreciate the generous amount of top shells in the dish. And I very much enjoyed the spicy sauce. My partner enjoyed the chicken giblets significantly more, and polished of almost the whole serving. The giblets were cooked perfectly; still springy and very garlicky. Not a dish for a first date, I'm sure. The side dishes were very average, but I'm not going to rage about something that's free. If they can speed up their cooking time (took them more than an hour to prepare the meal), I'm keen to try out the spicy chicken feet and spicy raw crab.
Their Food was really good i visited upstair korean style pub, staff are friendly, once you visit here I'm sure you will visit here again soon ! Most of my friends are keep saying that we should visit here again~ i totally agree with that !!!!
Went here with a friend after a long shift at work. We were craving for something Korean and I knew this place cause its a mere block away from my place. Food generally tasty. We had a combo of original friend chicken and sweet and spicy. That was really delicious and the serving is massive. It could be good for 3-4 people. We also had bbq, sirloin and pork belly. The sauces and sides that came with them were absolute yum. We just thought the the sirloin was cut too thick, it wasn't as tasty as I would want. The staff were very attentive and friendly! I could say the price was tad dear than needed but overall it was a great dining experience and I would definitely go back!
I really enjoyed the service during dinner, staff were really sociable having our meals prepared and cooked on the spot always being monitored. Where as for the food, it tasted amazing and the price is worth it along with the great service I say. 🤘😬
The two of us shared the seafood hotpot ($38). The menu said serves 2-4, but I would say more like 3-4. We had to leave a fair bit uneaten. It tasted good and was great value. Our server was really attentive and happy to answer all our questions about Korean food and drink.
I take points off though as I felt like I was eating at a nightclub. The front door was wide open despite being a freezing June night. There was dim lighting and loud music. With enough soju the atmosphere was more bearable, but still would have preferred something a bit more comfortable.
Good was very good like the usual Korean bbq ! The service was great- someone that speak English and understands you. Explain the menu to us and what would be a better option.
