Review Sambal Kampung - Melbourne

Jubee Cheng
Great Malaysian food in the city. Their char kway teow is one of those that have plenty of wok hay and tastes delicious. Authentic malaysian drinks like pearl barley water and teh tarik are also avaible though I wish them to be a little less sweet. Will come back again.

HOME DELIVERY REVIEW - GOOD QUALITY MALAYSIAN CUISINE Sambal Kampung is a popular restaurant (actually two outlets one in the suburbs and this one in the city) that serves authentic SE Asian favourites. Home delivery is never quite the same as the in-restaurant experience but Sambal Kampung does a good job of packaging up the meal. As I am not far from the restaurant, the meal arrived quickly and hot. We wanted a vegetarian dinner and had a number of choices. We went with kangkung (green vegetable), beancurd vegetable dish, "mapo doufu without the pork" and veg fried rice... oh and a not quite so vegetarian chicken and corn soup. The dishes were all quite acceptable.. except for the soup which was bland and gluggy.

hands down the best value Malaysian place in the CBD! (especially for dinner) generous portion sizes, tastes as good and cheaper than their fancier competition can recommend the Bak Kut Teh, Laksa, Nasi Goreng, Chicken Rice and Singapore Fried Noodles they are all solid

Came here on a Thursday night. Very relaxed atmosphere . Had veggie laksa, roti and a glass of wine. Definitely too much food for 1 person but it looked so good I had to try laksa was spicy and yummy and the tofu was fried perfectly. The roti was light and flakey. Couldn’t ask for more when travelling for business and want a quick mello not overpriced meal.

The Lobak was a highlight, spicy Nasi Goreng was decently flavoured but had hardly enough meat in it. On the flip side the Laksa had enough meat but was slightly lacking in flavour, while the Nasi Lemak with curry chicken was just serviceable. Quick service during lunch, can't ask much more for the price.

Good food, fast service and congested seating. Overall a good experience. If you go a little before 12 noon, it's very likely that you would be able to choose the table.

Awesome taste in decent price. Too bad the shop is not visible from main street. Been here twice, only because I stumbled upon it; it is in a tiny lane somewhere in CBD. Staff is friendly and patient too, especially during the crazy lunch time rush. Enjoyed the Malaysian chicken curry there
Joel
Pretty decent Asian food but found the fried flat noodles (fried way teow) rather bland and lacking the authentic charcoal taste. The coffee was seriously overpowered with condensed milk. It'll definitely give you the needed sugar rush and the unwanted diabetes too
Wearekimleaf
This place does the job. Nothing special but fills a quick fix.
Some Bunee Loves Food
Got the special fried rice from Uber eats. It was a large portion and quite flavoursome. It had prawn, chicken pieces and some veggies. Filling lunch.
SohzFoodTrail
Good quick eat. Food is served fast. Customer service is good.
Sunny Days Melbourne
This place was eerily quiet on a Friday evening. The interior was very spacious and the set up reminded me of some of the restaurants in Malaysia. Service was very pleasant.

I had the fish head curry laksa with hokkien noodles. The laksa broth was alarmingly oily but it tasted amazing....probably one of the better laksa in town. It was well spiced and there was a generous amount of nicely fried fish head pieces. The fried eggplant was lovely but I didn't appreciate the broccoli. Genuine laksa should not have broccoli, carrots or tomatoes (one of my pet peeves!).

I first tried Sambal Kampung in their new outlet in Doncaster (no zomato listing yet) and really liked their food there. It's pleasing to see that this was consistent across their branches.

Good place for a cheap and cheerful asian feed. It has options from all over asia to choose from. Quite a few come from the bain marie which I don't usually prefer but that is what you get for the price. I had the laksa which was very good (not quite at the level of somewhere like Laksa King but good for something that wasn't their only focus. This is a popular place and I totally get why.

As a fellow Malaysian, the small Combo set is really embarassing and pathetic. Had lunch today, for small combo, I ordered chicken ribs and vegetable. They give huge portion of rice, but only about 2 small pieces of ribs. I asked for at least 2 more pieces, and they charged me $12.50 (which is large combo price).

In summary, they give very very tiny portions of meat/vegetables for the combo sets, unless you specifically asked for more (which they will charge extra).

Also, I saw a lady telling the spectacled guy behind the counter to give more meat on a plate to an Aussie guy. Did I see bias here?

Hidden away in Little Collins Street, came to this place for a quick lunch. Wasn't disappointed. Ordered a Chicken Curry Laksa and Cendol. Curry laksa broth was tasty and lemak. Nice chunky morsels of chicken. Generous serve of noodles. Cendol also tasted good.

The outlet on Elizabeth Street has closed down so we ordered our usual favourites at this outlet on Little Collins. To our surprise there was no customers on a Saturday evening. Now we know the reason. We had har mee, nasi lemak and tea tarik. The drink was ok but the food tasted very different from the Elizabeth Street outlet. Har mee was quite bad so I didn't eat much. We have to find other options elsewhere.

Taste normal, not so so nice. Other shop have better taste and cheaper price. However, its seems like the whole shop is understaff and they jeed to hire more people. Lack of menu book and customer need to wait for the menu book from other customer.

Passed by here for a quick lunch and had the egg gravy noodle with beef slice.. it was not the best but still ok for a quick meal.. this places is always packed during lunch time.. there are many choices of Malaysian foods.. they also have a hot bar with a number of choices.. the place is set up as a self service restaurant, after paying over the counter, take your number & try to find your own seat..
Foodielover
Great venue for a quick lunch during the week. Came here with a bunch of colleagues. Order the special fried noodle, the meat was slightly overcooked and burned and it's too oily for me. But overall nothing amazing tok talk about

Sambul Kampung (to me) is a casual and humble establishment that provides quick "cheap-eats" with decent portions. Their food is average but lack some flavours and technique when cooking. They do get busy during lunch hours where long queues and pacing customers searching for tables is common if dining in. I did find their layout confusing with the menu displayed after the cashier (i.e. new customers would not know what's on the menu unless they've looked past the first cashier. There's also a second cashier further down and self serve water at the back that seems out of place.) Tables are not topped up with napkins and they can only be taken from the counter (I know they are trying to cut costs and cut workload of staff but it's not convenient to customers). Staff are friendly and attentive, you will notice them pacing the floors to clear tables as there are fast turnarounds when dining in. It's casual interior ambiance themed with dark wood, low lighting and pumping top 40s pop music creates a welcoming atmosphere for all.

So love the authentic Malaysian flavor. Both the quick lunch bar and ordered dishes are very tasty. Average service during peak hours, good service when it’s not crazy busy. Recommended.
Yummy In My Tummy
Had the nasi lemak. Stingy with condiments. Also only 3 pieces of chicken wings in the curry. It was edible but definitely not something I’d be coming back for.
Sammy
Had this urge to have some laksa on a cold Melbourne afternoon. Since the joint is reasonably close to city gave this a go. Curry laksa was my choice. After taking the first scoop of this laksa goodness, I started doubting my choices is life. Absolutely average laksa. Gave it 3 star as I haven’t tried the other stuff which may be good. But if laksa is your thing, stay as far away from this place as you can.
Custardbun
Reliable hawker style lunch option. It’s always busy and quite noisy at peak hour. I prefer my noodles cooked to order, and they have never disappointed.

When: Weekday night, dinner for two

Ambience: Spacious, Asian atmosphere, many tables close together

Service: Quick, friendly

What:
Vegetarian spring rolls: Good, crisp
Seafood Popiah: Average
Vegetarian fried noodles: Good, was customised with a vegan option
Seafood Curry Laksa: Delicious, slightly spicy

Parting thoughts: Nice place for a quick bite

Food : ⭐️⭐️ I ordered the roti canai with randang beef : it tasted great but too oily / and the hainanese chicken rice : I didn’t like it. The flavour was so different that the one I use to know.
Price : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good portion
Service : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service was ok / Quick service
Ambience : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Atmosphere from Asia. So it’s change from the very small restaurant without any decoration or typical atmosphere.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Char Kuey Teow

This place is a bit of a “den”, that reminds me of some of the food courts you will find around Asia. Packed to the rafters, cheap hawker eats, tiny tables all squeezed in close together. I had a Char Kuey Teow for lunch (with extra chilli), and it was a generous portion (for the price), piping hot (temperature wise), smokey, slippery, and deliciously satisfying. A reliable spot for a quick, cheap and satisfying meal. Will definitely be back to try out some of the other dishes.

Third Sambal Kampung outlet that I have tried so far and it's just as good as the others. This time I ordered crispy noodle with egg gravy and it was served pretty generously. Taste wise it was also pretty good. The place is a bit darker and simpler than the other outlets but hey I don't mind. Oh and they are pretty generous with the chilli!
The Amazing Eater
Affordable Malaysian food in CBD. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly customer service!! Love their CKT! Can't go wrong with that. Reasonable price too.. Definitely recommending this to my family when they are here.
Chela
Friendly, fast service. Excellent Laksa with tofu and delicious eggplant. Includes your choice of noodles, which makes me super happy. Top 40 tunes playing in the background. A quick, filling dinner between meetings. I will definitely eat here again!
Chiliong
Good value for money with generous serving and friendly waitress. Food tastes authentic and close resemblance of Malaysian flavour. Office lunch hours the place can be a little busy. Teh tarik is freshly made (not from the readily 3 in 1 pack). Will definitely go back!
Pierre Pie
Lunch time , look around Collin street lane food , this definitely lots of people over this place taking lunch . Taste of food not bad and also many type of food for selected . Price reasonable and customer service not bad .
Famished Frog
Their ordered meals are great - substantial portions, great flavor, close enough to authentic Malaysian cuisine. Their selections over the counter though are a hit-and-miss. Upon walking up to the ordering counter, you are met with a display of attention-catching homemade-style dishes. You can select one rice/noodle serving alongside one meat and one veg dish for $10. Alternatively, you can add on one more meat dish for $11.50 - great value for money. However, pray that whoever serves you has mercy on you as you pick your choices. Some servers are generous and giving with their portion serves, while some will leave you feeling shorthanded - it is not a good feeling to have when you're looking at the small amount they're scooping up and putting on your plate, knowing that you've been given substantially more previously by someone else. I sat down dejectedly with my plate of 3-thumb size pieces of fish, 2 small strips of chicken and 2 spoonfuls of sambal eggplant. The silver lining to this was that the server compensated for the space on my plate with a heaping scoop of noodles, which temporarily distracted me from my saddened heart of unfulfilled hope. Overall, still a good place to visit for lunch, but be wary of the dangerous game you would play should you choose to order over the counter.
The Hungry Moustache
You can’t help feeling like Jon Snow when sometimes weather in Melbourne feels like you’re battling white walkers in the North. I don’t have a Valerian sword in my hand but I do have a bowl of laksa which I’m sure even the Night’s Watch would be envious of. I’m unsure if George R. R. Martin’s universe involves culinary delights from Malaysia. It should.

Oh, we’re visiting Sambal Kampung today by the way for this edition of Lunch Crawls. It’s cold and we’re about to get our noodle on!

Also if you’re new here, Lunch Crawls is series about sharing my experiences in the Melbourne CBD and sifting through the plethora of lunch options on offer. Good, bad, beautiful, ugly, phenominal – I’ll cover them all.

Life’s too short for chicken and broccoli that make you question your existence.

I’m no stranger to Sambal Kampung and especially love their Maribyrnong branch near Shinmai Tasty. Seating is cafeteria style, a lot of tables and space. I’m confident you’ll get a seat even if you don’t come early, turnover is relatively quick.

The awesome:

- The value and laksa is a good deal here. $11 for a heaping bowl of seafood laksa in the city is typically decent deal. There’s also a stationary chilli station for eager chilli-heads (chilli oil and pickled chilli). There’s a deepness to the broth mostly likely owing the Sambal they use and the generous levels of both egg and rice noodles. I had a lovely time sweating beads while slurping every last drop of broth. Recommended.

I wish there was more ‘wok hei’ in the fried keuy teow. This is the smokey flavour that comes from using the wok on very high heat. Overall, not a fan of the oilyness from the dish, I think it could benefit from some pickles or some kind of acid.

But then again, I’m not Malaysian.. so what do I know?
Hungry Jeweller
Affordable Malaysian cuisine in the heart of the city. I enjoyed the fried barramundi, ice cendol and popiah rolls. Ambience is relaxed. Communication could be improved.
Gabriela
Cheap and tasty! I had the laksa, it was tasty and spicy, also tried the fried rice and the portion is very filling. I will come back to try some of the other dishes!

I had the very nice Curry Laksa for my quick lunch on the day before, very fragrant and good amount of spiciness. I suggested to lunch again on the following day with partner. I recommended him to try the curry laksa noodle this time.

I tried the curry soup, was a little salty compared to the one I just had yesterday. Personally I prefer the tofu curd soaked into the curry soup when they cooked, so has more flavour into it and more soft and fluffy.

Very disappointed with my order Dry Egg noodle with roast pork and wan ton. The noodle was okay, I guess cant compare with those in Malaysia, the roast pork was quite speechless, not good at all, the wan ton skin was very thick and the soup was salty.

It is what it is. A quick and cheap place to eat. Had a whole deep-fried barramundi, with some sambal sauce and some capsicum on top. Cooked well and it tasted pretty good. And at $14.50... a steal!

The food here isn't earth-shattering, but it's certainly good value. Can't knock them for being no frills.

had such high hopes for this place with its menu of 70 items ranging from laksa, stir fries, Malaysian, chinese, pork buns Asian iced coffee, and malay/indo drinks

My colleague and I came here during Monday lunch time.

You order and pay at the counter and then grab a seat. So no table service. We ordered the beef rendang and the sambal fish.

The beef rendang arrived at room temperature in a tiny bowl with a separate bowl of rice. How were we to eat. There were no plates and diving into the rice meant that some of it would fall out.

We asked for share plates and dug in. The rendang has a very very thick curry and you can taste the shredded coconut. It is delicious but the portion is for a single person only and not for sharing.

The waiter was confused about our sambal fish and brought us some other fish dish. When I pointed out that we had been served incorrectly, two staff members failed to understand. They kept asking me if I ordered a big fish or a small fish. How was I to know? I then had to walk over to the counter and point out that I had ordered number 70.

The sambal fish finally arrived 15 minutes later and was very very sweet. It was coated in some really sweet sauce and was deep fried. Very very disappointing.

I think my other colleague was right. The only thing rhis reStaurant can get right is the rendang. And don't expect spicy food here.

Cassidy – I went to Sambul with a couple of friends for a late lunch. We went around 2pm which was good as the lunch rush had well and truly finished, so we were able to get a table and hear each other talk. I’d recommend this to anyone that has later lunch as an option as I’ve heard they get quite busy. On the food front, I got the sweet & sour pork. They cooked my meal up super fresh, super hot; it was nice. My friends had been there before and really like the Malaysian food and given that’s their background that’s a pretty good testament to the quality of the food at Sambul. I’d be happy to go back and try a few different dishes.

Cleanliness of the restaurant – 7/10

Cleanliness of plates/cutlery/glasses – 8/10

Cleanliness of the menus – n/a

Service – 8/10

Wait time for food – average

Food overall – 7/10

Ambience – 7/10

Value for money – 8/10

Malaysian food can be so interesting and extremely tasty. Maybe it's because I live in Melbourne and am spoilt for choice when it comes to delicious Malasian food but I find the offerings at this restaurant extremely limited.

Friends that have eaten the laksa say they think the spice is a little too overpowering for the dish (and they love spice). Personally though only having one dish available for vegetarians (and nothing for vegans) in Melbourne seems a little bit of a oversight. There are so many great veggie dishes coming out of that melting pot of cultures and culinary history that it seems a deliberate choice to restrict the options to one plate of expensive dumplings. They are soft, well stuffed but lacking in any great flavour.

It's a order at the counter type deal here and food is brought out to your table. We had to find a bottle of water and two disposable plastic cups to drink it though. Maybe for the price people will deal with this but I think you can find cheaper and far more tasty options only a few doors down. Hopefully they will improve on their service and menu in the near future.

Nice place but don't order the Nasi Goreng if you want the Indonesian version of fried rice. It was just the standard version of fried rice you would find at a Chinese restaurant. It lacked flavour and spiciness as well. If I ever returned I would definitely order something different.

They also do split payment which is useful if you are with a large group!
OnePointFive
We ordered Kong Pao Chicken, Sambal Fish Fillet, Sambal Kang Kong and Chicken Rice. All dishes were tasty. Portions were pretty big and got plenty of meat. The girl who served us was friendly and efficient. Good to visit if you are looking for decent Malaysian/Chinese food.

Legit laksa I'm cbd. I've tried laksa bar, Sarawak kitchen, this is as close as it gets to Malaysian laksa? I should know. Their lunch food court style options are amazing! Rendang and curry, man transported back home!
Stu
Great little place for lunch in the city. It has plenty of seating which is good for a Friday when there's no rush and you have time to sit down and enjoy a long-ish lunch. The food was really nice and quite cheap too considering how much there was. The service was fast too. Definitely going to become a Friday regular.

I thought I was in luck for some freshly made Malaysian/Chinese dishes when I saw Sambal Kampung so close to work. Stepping inside, the place was packed. I waited at the door for a bit before realising no one seats you, so I went to order at the counter as I’ve already made my choice. . Egg Gravy Noodle with Beef ($11.00)

Sambal Kampung is a Malaysian and Chinese restaurant. There are two branches in the city, one in Collins st and the other is in Chinatown. I went to the one on Lt Collins st for dinner as that one is close to my class. Here there were not that many people for dinner but lunchtime its pretty busy. Service was fast and friendly. Here they specialise in the roti canai as I had last Sunday. It was fluffy and oily, just the way that I like it.

Malaysian Hawkers in the CBD .... not to be mistaken with those Hawkers in the Hawthorn Football Club One of the place we go for our Malaysian Hawker quick fix ..... and a few more things. Simple, not much flair but never disappoint and good value for money.
Shimona
Surprisingly little gem in the city. Chicken rice is one of the best I've had in Melbourne. Laksa is pretty good too. Layered milk tea is always thick and yummy.
I like that the have a relatively small menu and take pride in the quality of each dish. Well done.
Gee
I love mie goreng and was looking forward to trying a new place. You choose normal or spicy - I chose spicy. This was possibly the most bland and tasteless mie goreng I've ever had. And no spice whatsoever. Wasted meal, so disappointing!
KEN
This place is rather hit-and-miss. I always order same or similar things but it's never the same as before. If it's good, it's very enjoyable. If it's bad, then I end up on the toilet for the night. In my experiences dining here, inconsistency is consistent. So good luck
CL
This is my normal lunch place and it's worth the money! Strongly recommend rendang beef and sambal fish. Also their sea food laksa is worth a try, different to the normal laksa you will have, it's got a fresh spice to it.
Fussy Eater
What a fabulous laksa. I've been searching for a laksa that is not too bland or creamy. I rate the laksa higher than laksa king (which I have deemed slightly too creamy), I'm so satisfied. I ordered take away so bear in mind the pics are not reflective of eat in dishes. So yum.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Was hesitant when walking into this place as it looks rather dingy however food was delicious, service friendly and fast. Great price and big serves, will definitely be back.

This place is the best, Authentic Malaysian food, My favourite is the Nasi Lemak, either with the chicken or beef rendang :) Cheap and friendly, good service and quality food

Small and value for money Malaysian cafe... Decided to try their chicken laksa as I saw many people sitting and eating the laksa outside the booth area..Soup wasn't that rich but chicken was perfectly cooked and tender. Might try those Chicken rice next time.
Marasat
Been here twice now, once for a lunch with colleagues, and once for a very early pre -function dinner.
This review is based on the Laksas only, given this was the go to dish for me on both occasions.
This restaurant absolutely pumps week day lunchtimes. The orders are taken quickly and efficiently, while the delivery of food can be a little on the slow side.
The Seafood Laksa had a good chilli kick, and contained plenty of ingredients with a choice of noodles. Serving sizes ensure you will not leave hungry.
$12 very well spent. Will try the Kway Teow next time!
CityWorker88
Such a nice little place to go for lunch as an office worker. Plenty of variety including soup noodles from curry laksa, har mee to wonton soup. Also has your regular fried kuey teow, beef flat noodles and others. Also has a bay marie for a quick lunch selection menu with rice or fried rice. All usually for the $10 mark.
Bunjibing
I only visit for the laksa. It usually has the right amount of firey goodness with a nice serve of mixed noodles, prawns, fish cake, chicken and fried tofu puffs. A lot of people scoff at the laksa here, citing Laksa King as the laksa king, but for a CBD laksa fix, this is the place.
J-Fo
Sambal Kampung is a tiny Malaysian restaurant on Melbourne's main Elizabeth Street drag. The usual hawker classics are there like Laksa, Mee Goreng and Hainanese Chicken Rice (white and roasted). I had the Roasted Chicken rice. On the plus side, the dish size was generous. The chicken in particular, was very tasty and comprised mostly of tender thigh meat and was accompanied by a large mound of stock-infused rice (above average, but not amazing). On the down side, the serving of chilli sauce was miniscule. Given that an important part of Hainanese Chicken Rice is the ginger-chilli sauce, this was a big let down. Service was pretty friendly and attentive, though. All in all, it was not bad but let down by inconsistent serving sizes.
Kimmy_desu
Had way too much food here tonight that I almost couldn't walk out the door. Went on a Cudo voucher deal and we had quite a few yummy dishes. Firstly we had a fried wonton entree - this was okay, nothing exciting. The laksa was ordered additionally because I really felt like having it. I think it was quite good! I'll definitely go back for the laksa. We then shared two mains - fried pork ribs covered in sweet & sour sauce and sambal long beans. The sambal long beans were great! We originally wanted kang kung but they ran out of it, thankfully the beans were very tasty with plenty of sambal sauce. Also had a plate of fried rice to share which was plentiful with a nice mixture of ingredients. The waitress was extremely friendly and provided us with incredible service. When we said that we were too full for desserts, she offered to let us have the desserts as takeaway. Very happy with our meal here and will go back very soon. Menu prices are pretty reasonable, the laksa only costs $10, and main dishes are around $18-$22. The atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable, great for quick meals and the alcohol is cheap too - beers are from $4.50 to $6, and wine by the glass only $5-6. Highly recommend!

Delicious curry laksa! This is a great place for lunch in the city. I come here with colleagues and we all enjoy a spicy curry laksa, with the occasional roti as well. I usually go for my own custom made laksa at the back, but you can order regular if you're unsure what you like in it.
Aussie Nawaab
The food on a given day depends on the mood of the chef. The best thing this place has is the Nasi Goreng. Really authentic stuff. And if ur a chili eater then do try the amazing chili sauce that they have in the corner. Just lifts every dish up. Best chili sauce ever. And i mean it....its the best.
Andy Lim
Wont be back. Bakut teh meat like rocks (supposed to be the opposite). Popiah ingredients tasted off (?expired bean sprouts) served with watery bland sauce. In fact, nothing impresses out of the 10 things we ordered for our group. Could have forgiven if it was cheap eat but it certainly wasn't.... won't be back. So many other better Malaysian joints out there. In retrospect, not surprised we were the only customers in the place on the day (lunch).
Simty
Disappointing lunch. Went to eat today for lunch. Order pork wonton dry egg noodle. When the food comes, there is no wonton. I asked the staff, and they said there is no wonton now. The noodle is very small in size, and ingredient is disappointing with a few slices of BBQ pork and green vege. Taste is OK, but can hardly fill my starving stomach. I even have to go buy some sushi roll after this.

Low quality cheap food prepared by Chef Mic (Microwave) maybe ?. Sambal Kampung used to be this tiny establishment at the heart of china town before their big move to little Collins Street. I have acknowledge the bad reviews below but decided to give the new premise a try for the first time as their food was awesome at their old premise.

We ordered the Singaporean fried noodle, Hakka Fried Pork & Roti Canai for entree. We HIGHLY SUSPECTED that Chef Mic(Microwave) was the unsung hero of this restaurant when the main dish (Singaporean Fried Noodles) came before the entree after less than 5 minutes of ordering. No wonder the waitress grew a white hair when we requested for the noodles to be slightly mild in flavor, not even Gordon Ramsay can tweak precooked meals. The same suspicion arose with my Hakka fried pork with rice as the texture of the sauce is similar to the ones usually found in overnight food.

Overall food quality is a huge drop in standards from their previous China town restaurant but the prices are very cheap at average $10 a meal for single dishes.

Don't. Just Don't. I have never suffered from Indigestion in my life until I went here for lunch. And MSG poisoning to boot. Just Don't. It is horrid and bland. Walk around the corner to one of the laneways. I promise the walk will be worth it not to be in as much pain as I am now.

Ugh.
Alvin
Enjoyed lunch on a busy Friday July 2014 Afternoon. Great Malaysian style food. Great service, friendly and courteos. Please look for Kevin - he served me on a Friday lunch at a time when the restaurant was busy. Found time to attend to my questions and even tried to take my order at the table to save time ordering from the counter but not successful only because payment was to be made with the order on a busy afternoon. Nasi Lemak was good. Fish fillet noodles is an excellent choice. Char Kuay Teow is delicious. [alvin]

Beef rendang was off. Went in for a quick lunch, ordered rendang and sambal beans on rice.Partway through, the rendang was sour.Told a guy and he denied it.He's adamant that I bit into salt and started to explain that their rendang was cooked for 5 hours! And the best part was he's offered a replacement rendang.Told him l didn't t want to get sick eating his delicious food, and left

Totally awesome ; don't know what all the ranting and raving is about.
Barramundi Thai style - scrumptious.
AaronN
Food is a bit bland and lacking in flavour.
Mister Jeff
LAKSA & RENDANG. I like both of these dishes here. Rendang not too hot but plenty of tasty thick gravy. I always seem to get a huge plateful if getting large size serve. Laksa is of a very high standard to my taste - you can tell its good as soon as it hits the table. As good as some of those fabled Sydney Laksa places in Hunter St.
Paul Myatt
I eat here every morning and sometimes return for lunch, amazing breakfast deal, and always something good for lunch, serving size is just right. Keep up the awesome work!
Fatchops
Sure it's chaotic and noisy. Service is basic but food is good and cheap. The laksa is full of yummy bits including prawn, chicken, fish cake, a whole boiled egg, bean curd puffs. Really tasty and more generous in the good bits than many other places. The sambal green beans are awesome.
Rennie
Why would you bother? Been .... Why would you bother?
Been here three times with work and enough is enough!... there's nothing special, portions aren't that big and it all looks as tough its been dished from a tray with a general blandness for taste. Spend a couple of dollar's extra and get a better meal and a clean table to have lunch at so many other good and cheap Asian restaurants.
Tim Wong
Slightly chaotic cafeteria style setting. Had a chicken char hor fun (with egg sauce) and it was one of the better ones I've tried. It came out fast - within a couple of minutes.
Amy123
Hit and miss food but reasonably priced. Hainanese chicken rice and char kway teo are the two things we order the most from this restaurant. Usually can't go wrong with char kway teo - always tasty and generous portion. Hainanese chicken rice is good when you don't get served chicken left over from lunch time - telltale sign is over-cooked dry chicken!

Management needs attention. There's something not quite right about the management of this place. There are some unspoken rules you have to follow...

1. Food portions are inconsistent...steering towards the paltry side now. If you order noodles be sure to ask for extra noodles as the few strands they give just don't cut it.
2. Do not sit on a "reserved" table if you have no more than 4 people, otherwise they will boot you from it. This is rather annoying when there are no tables to sit on!
3. If anything goes wrong the manager will blame the staff and be unapologetic. Staff turnover is really high here and nobody ever knows what they are doing. If they stuff up the excuse is they are "new" so just bite your tongue as the poor worker will just get a lashing from lady boss in front of customers.
4. Always have some physical activity with your bowl/plate if you're still going...otherwise the workers will swoop and take it from you.

I "like" this place, as I do think the food is OK...but they really need to clean up the flow a bit.

Rude service. Sorry to say, you are a huge disappointment. When a customer makes a complain, the first thing you say is I am sorry and is there anything that I can do to make it better. Not retaliate and try to argue your case.
There are many more Malaysian restaurants around the city, and people have the choice to not visit you again, do not think your restaurant is set up to succeed no matter what. A good restaurant provides good food and good service to add up to a good experience overall.Too bad you have just lost another customer.

Tasty!. This is a no nonsense basic eatery that serves yummy hawker style food. it was a cold Melbourne day and how good was it to chow down on the food here. Sometimes one wishes for larger stomach capacity.....

Sambal Kampung served up a delicious basa which was served with a decadent spicy layer of sambal. While the used of basa wasn't traditional, the sambal itself was beautiful.
