Best service in Carlton North! If you need to buy a take away coffee, this is the place! The staff are incredibly efficient and make a delicious coffee within minutes. Irresistible pastries with generous servings. Fresh loaves of bread and baguettes are also available.

Just the right amount of baked goods and the coffee delivers a good high round kick. A local's delight, an ideal start to anyone's day!

The best sausage roll I have had in a very long time. And the vanilla slice was lovely. And friendly, helpful customer service. 🥰

One of the best almond croissants in melbourne, but the biggest for sure. the filling was amazing great taste and always fresh, the biggest for sure. I will definitely buy them again.

HIGHLY UNDERRATED HIDDEN GEM Me and my mate woke up looking for a pie and coffee being new to the area wasn't sure where to go Googled and wow wow wee Wow. I had the beef and burgandy pie a mini quiche and a caramel eclair can not fault anything. Pie was delicious and big pieces of succulant steak no salt needed pastry on point and I was given a little tomatoe sauce on the side which I said to my mate is a brutal insult to this pie. My mate said his pie was amazing I had to ask because by the time I looked up he had finished it. Price was a little expensive but once I but into it I did not have a problem paying it. The worker was so lovely she was polite and friendly and the Baker even stopped and put his pies down to give a wave. Defiantly new regular was so amazed by the cakes and customer service and selection of savoury pies and tarts that I forgot to order a coffee and when the food came out to my table I was to excited to eat to even ask for a coffee.

I live just a block away so my local french patisserie - good coffee, friendly staff, nice treats and french pastry, overall great experience at reasonable prices. Much recommend!
Trader Joe
Buttery crust but the pie overall quite dry and the filling a little floury. Reply: Hi ! Was the chicken and mushroom pie. Was broken up but was also informed about this before I purchased it, so not the fault of the waitress. Was $11 with a drink which I thought was a bit much.

Great coffee and pear croissant was so nice đź‘Ť will be back !

I called into Filous Patisserie in Carlton North to grab a selection of delicious pastries, tarts and cheesecakes to take home. Such a cute little patisserie, Filous has been operating in the same location for decades and has been recently refreshed by the current owner. That said locals were keen to keep their favourite spinach and cheese slice on the menu and its most certainly the biggest savoury seller. Today I took home a trio or tarts, eclairs and a selection of danishes as well as a chocolate and plain croissant mini baked cheesecake. Danishes were sizeable and so fresh I was tempted to eat them all. Favourites from our selection included the raspberry tart, blueberry danish and escargot. The baked cheesecake was decadent and the trio of choux eclairs so light and puffy filled with chocolate, vanilla and caramel custard.

Filous has a small amount of seating outside for when restrictions lift again but is a really good take away venue for yummy mid morning treats.

Thanks to the team at Filous for their hospitality.

Some amazing creations from Filous for all my past functions. Every single time they just seem to exceed my expectations lately.

Thank you so much to the team for baking these amazing delicious goodies

Great selection of bakeries here. Love all the different pastries, croissants, pies, tarts, cakes, and breads they've got here. My favorite would be the almond croissant and the spinach pastry. Definitely recommend. Have it with a cup of coffee and your breakfast is fixed!

I am not sure that the Uber Eats deliveries on a weekend are made fresh on the day. Something not quite right about it. Didn't really enjoy the pastries or quiches.

I see some other reviewers are commenting on the freshness too.

The pastries were enjoyable. Had bought croissants and pies. Both were delicious. Recently went to get the cakes. Some of them were stale and tasted sour in their chocolate mousse. They might have kept it too long?

Had some good cakes here. The pastry is also great too. I cant specifically remember any of the cakes/pastries here but all I can remember was that both were yummy.

One of my local cafes I visit quite frequently and I can say that the croissants are perfection best I’ve had and remind me of my visits to France.
Mushroom, spinach slices and sausage rolls also delicious!!!

Coffees and sweet goods are a bit of a miss here but croissants and breads are must if you’re in the area.

Vasko Vasilevski
Byron's Vanilla Slice Blog
Heading down Lygon street en route to the musuem I took a punt at grabbing a takeaway vanilla slice from Filou's. With only two remaining, I should have known that the batch were baked yesterday. For the higher than average price I would have expected more from a 'French patisserie'. The pastry was the real let down; three heavy, slightly wooden layers that were too thick. The top layer was too dry under the slab of icing, and the middle and bottom layers too soggy under the weight of the custard. There was no real flavour or richness to the sheets either - so pretty much lacking in all areas here. The custard, again, was very underwhelming. An OK consistency, but lacking richness and vanilla flavour. The icing too was not up to scratch. Too thick in its construction and not overly sweet. Would I return to Filou's? Not for a vanilla slice, but maybe for something savoury.

Filou used to be one of our favourite places to go for French pastries. We loved their chunky and crispy sausage roll, ham and cheese croissant, the quiches, beef pie and choc croissant. They were all yummy... until one day the lady gave us a cold sausage roll and it definitely did not taste good. She was rushing and served us quickly although there was no one else at that time. It's a pity as we really like their pastries... We might go back one day, and hopefully no more cold sausage rolls!
MmmM?
I honestly had a life changing moment after having my first of their ham and cheese croissants today. Absolutely amazing!

This cafe is only just ok by french standards. I also find it over priced compared to similar cafes. I have the biggest sweet tooth so the beautifully displayed and colourful desserts were my favourite. Coffee pretty average. Was looking forward to the mushroom pastry (I mean who doesn't like mushrooms) but was not impressed at all. The filling was bland and dense. Will I go again? I'm sure I will.

Best patisserie I have ever been to (and I am quite experienced working in patisserie). Highly recommend the almond croissant - I get one almost every day now! (Very sneaky). The bread rolls too are fantastic. The staff are lovely, I am a regular customer now and have become good friends with the girls working there - bright, lovely smiles and always so kind, asking me how I am going at uni, etc.

I can absolutely, 100% substantiate their claims for the best croissant in Melbourne - it is the best I have ever had. The hand-crafted details of the pastries and cakes are something else, you can tell the patience and love been put into all their range.

Artisan Patisserie, good Croissant but needs to get into 21st Century Cafe Hospitality.

Always a welcoming sight in Melbourne, who doesn't like Croissant and Coffee.

I can't substantiate their claim for the best Croissant in Melbourne, but they are good, buttery, texture, flaky and still well priced.

Coffee is not so bad, it's your traditional Cafe but they could do with a better coffee beans and tea range to compliment their goodies.

I just hope they can get an automated Cash Register so they can charge us accordingly and correctly especially when you are buying a large amount for Take Away.

I used to live right near this place, and despite only going there due to convenience of proximity, to this day I occasionally reflect on how great it was.

The staff were always super friendly, the coffee was not only as good as the best cafe's in Melbourne, but they prepare it as quickly as a chain. And the pastries? Oh my God. In fact, given how big a health risk diabetes are and given how addictive the food from Filou's is I'm having a bit of a moral dillemma writing this review.

That being said, while their food is typically very rich it's also very nutritious as well. Sure, it's got a lot of "carbs" and "sugar" and "fat" but look up the typical diets and life expectancy of the French if you wanna get a glimpse at how nuanced nutrition actually is and how a multi-billion dollar diet industry tries to over-simplify it.
Aaah, real croissants on a Sunday morning.. A great way to start the day. Leave the mushroom slice for me, I am not sharing :-). A steady flow of customers from nearby and some travelling from afar, it is always a good experience.

I discovered this French bakery within my first month of living in Melbourne, and if I could have frequented everyday, I would have. To this day, I cannot begin describing how I felt when I first walked in, but I will attempt to.

We got to Filou’s early in the morning and was greeted by the sweet smell of pastry (butter :D). The staffs were busy bringing out fresh pastries and other goodies from the kitchen and I couldn’t help but feel myself being drawn to the display cabinet full of tempting offerings

Been coming here for 15 years. I love this place. They are a hidden treasure. amazing traditional French sweets and treats. I live in the south east and drive 45 minutes once a month with my family to enduldge there.

Great service. Lovely, friendly staff. The sausage rolls, pies and the savoury slices are excellent. The quiche Lorraine isn't that great though, with the pastry being quite chewy, but the filling is pretty good. Best cheese biscuits I've ever had!
Iskybibble
Best sausage roll in the world, seriously astonishing. The bread is also amazing!! Can't wait to go back.

Best Hot Cross Buns. Filous has the best hot cross buns. Just the right amount of spice, fruit and dough. I wish they were available all year round.

Apple turnovers!. And surprisingly good service (It's French).

The croissants... manna from heaven! Merci!!!!!

The best French Patisserie in Melb!. Have gone to Filou many many times and everything there is so fresh and delicious. Really really amazing!
I'm in love with the meat pies because they have actual chunks of meat in them and taste fantastic! Highly recommended.

I've been going to Filou's for about 10 years! It's the best. Every now and then, I'll roll out of bed on the weekend and head straight for Filou's!!! All those people who dislike Filou's are just nit-picking. Get over your sour cherries and your too soft pastries... :S
Foodie
Great croissant, slow service. Went into Filou's on Tuesday morning while it wasn't particularly busy to get a takeaway coffee, I ended up waiting so long just to order that I missed two trams, so I didn't bother ordering a coffee and just got a chocolate croissant. Absolutely amazing croissant though!
Isabelle
My cherry and custard pastry was overwhelmingly sweet, and my coffee burnt. Not impressed. I will give their bread a try, though
Felicity
Great food, lots of vegetarian options if you eat eggs . Friendly staff.
Dhilt
A bit hit or miss with the hot food. Disappointing, esp the vegetarian options.

Love the French accents on a Saturday morning as I buy my bread! Trythe spinach quiche/pies. Nothing like these in Melbourne. Tres bien !!

Back on 7 October!. I walked past a couple of days ago and a note in the window said they are reopening on 7 October. Woo!
Bji
Looks like it might be soon.... They've finished the new wall and the windows are in. So hopefully we'll be feasting on french pastry again real soon!

When???. Is Filou's EVER going to re-open? Is the patissier working his magic elsewhere?
Kattis_2003
Owners?. Hey! Does anyone know who the owner do the Filuo's patisserie is? I'm doing a local newsstory for uni ( I'm a jounalism student) and would like to interview them about why they haven't reeopened , what the problems are etc.I saw that someone wrote that he/she knew the owners and I would love to talk to them.
please email me at kattis_2003@hotmail.com if you know who they are.

Devastated. Living near Filou, and being friendly with the wonderful owners and staff, it's sad to see they are still closed. If it weren't for all the red tape and hoops that had to be jumped through, perhaps I'd once again be neck deep in pastries.

I look expectantly forward to their return, whenever it should be!
Steve
Currently closed due to a runaway car crashing into the bakery. I'm missing the friendly service and fantastic pastries. One critisism is a lack of savoury Vegetarian options.
