The food was above average. The staff was really helpful and friendly. We used Zomato Gold 1 + 1 and it was worth it! However without Zomato Gold it would’ve been underwhelming for the price.
Found this place by accident, turns out the food was super good. I've tried Takoyaki, it super soft and delicious. will definitely come back here again
Really amazing service, the staff went over and beyond to help us out. Food was delicious and presented very well, I would definitely come here again!
Absolutely amazing and deliciously fresh food. Fantastic service. A little on the pricey side but you’re paying for authentic, quality food that is genuinely Japanese rather than the cheap poor quality sushi by Chinese shops all around the CBD.
Would recommend!
Will come back for:
+ Assorted Sashimi
+ Black cod
+ Unagi Kaka yaki (grilled eel)
Popped by here for dinner on a Sunday night after craving for Japanese food, and was not disappointed. We started with the assorted sashimi (fresh, sliced to perfection, and delicious), the volcano roll (creamy, textural and moorish), the black cod (silky and yummy with the sweet miso paste), and the grilled eel (grilled to perfection, sticky and super yummy on top of a bed of steam rice). Service was polite and friendly, prices were above average, and the place was nice and intimate. A great dining experience and we’ll certainly be back if we crave for Japanese again.
Came here for dinner tonight and ordered chirashi rice, tempura Udon & 2 ice creams. Food was great, service was friendly, environment was good too! Price is a bit pricey but worth it when using Zomato Gold.
This is a really friendly restaurant. All the sushi and sashimi is made fresh by an expert sushi chef. Even the lunchtime bento boxes are made fresh. They are excellent value for money and presented superbly, with lots of variety in each option. There are seating options of Japanes style, tables and stools where you can watch the sushi chef at work.
highly recommended!!!!! tasty fusion Japanese food & friendly staffs & reasonable price & comfortable decoration. will definitely back to this place, suitable for many occasions such as birthday celebration, family gathering and etc.
Authentic Japanese restaurant. The chef was professional and the staff was very friendly.
We ordered a few signature dishes and the volcano roll is a must!
Very impressive! Highly recommended!
Located king street , Japanese cuisine. Taken opportunity lunch dining over this placed, the dining atmosphere is great and the customer service is friendly and great. The food is tasty and nice and quality . Lastly price is reasonable and thumbs up cheers
This is the third time that I’ve been here. It is absolutely amazing experience.
The volcano roll is so good that you will never imagine. Unaju is definitely recommended, if you enjoy eels in Japanese style, definitely try that. Deluxe sashimi will be a good choice if you have 3-4 people. It is amazing and fresh, but we are only two, it’s a bit too much for us.
Overall, definitely recommended. Try it!
Amazing authentic Japanese food!!!!
Been there with my five friends for dinner, the private room was offered and it gave us feeling of intimate.
Sushi chef is Japanese but spoke good English. Sashimi boat was amazing especially the salmon sashimi were standout fresh and tasteful. And also, the Volcano roll was very nice, must try.
Service was very good, the manager Nick was caring and helpful. He gives us good recommendations and attended to our every need.
However,The only setback would be the room temperature which was bit cold for me.
Overall, this was a pretty nice place, and we would definitely return again.
Very friendly staff but i guess i came in at the wrong time. Tried to have beef bento but unfortunately ran out off, instead I got the chicken and believe me it was the best. The over counter seats are the best way to chat with the chef. The wine collection is not that extensive but the Range of shiraz is quite impressive. I would love to return again. PS. Like the food a lot.
Really fresh sushi and sashimi, price is a little bit high but I think it's worth it. Restaurant staff recommanded the uni sashimi which was so delicious and fresh and really suprised me. Will definately recommand to my friend.
Hibachi Japanese Grill drills straight to the core of what good Japanese is all about. Quaint, tasteful surrounds with an attention to detail that can only be marvelled at. This particularly establishment is like a blooming rose in the otherwise wild thorn bush that is King St.
Food is good, but I think still overpriced. This restaurant owner told me their store isn’t café restaurant,it’s fancy restaurant and that’s the reason why their foods are expensive.
Hmmmmm not bad

Quality was good but I was left hungry went with a girl she seemed more impressed then I did
I would recommend this only if u have eaten lunch before hand ...
The food was not too good, just has average taste to me. But still also need to try though. I like the atmosphere and the drink. Service was altight not to impressive to me.
Staff is extremely friendly and attentive to details. We got the deep fried king prawn which is amazing with the prawns are fresh and the batter is crispy. Price is a bit steep as portion is small but overall quality food.
I'm Japanese customer and most of Japanese stores in Melbourne were disappointed me but the foods in this restaurant are so good. Especially Sukiyaki is exactly the same that I had in Japan before. Rice is also good and looks of foods are beautiful. I highly recommend to go if you are interested in.
Beautiful seting and friendly staff. Well presented food. Vocanol roll is my favourate dish and love the special of the day which is big platter of cooked seafood, really worth the money. The fresh sashimi is mouth watering look. Definately will come back to try different dish.
Great food. Impeccable service. You can tell the owners take great pride in this place. Recommend the volcano rolls. Delicious. We are still talking about them. Will definitely be back.
beautiful Sushi, the volcano roll is one thing that you Must try, it tastes absolutely amazing!! Good services and it is a quite place to dine. However tempura is okay, the batter is a bit soft but as crunchy as I thought but still good taste and the portion is very generous. Highly recommend this place!
Thanks for an awesome night with a wonderful staff who cared for our every need on Thursday night. Using the tatami room it was a nice area to have a family event. The cooking of the sukiyaki was a good experience and made it an extra special night... Will definitely be back
Great volcano sushi, and the salmon, avocado sake salad was delicious. Scotch fillet stake was good, but overall not quite worth the price..
A cold Burn city night mixed with Friday night lights after a long working week calls for a classic japanese culinary delight in a relaxed atmosphere.
Hibachi Japanese Grill located off King Street toward Lonsdale is a favourite for locals near and far as well as NSW Hunter Valley shop owners at the Wine Glass Gallery whom we had the pleasure of meeting.
An order of Ebi Nanban $16.8 Deep fried king prawns glazed with Japanese vinaigrette sauce for entrée followed with a senses delight of Sukiyaki Western Jango! Kidding it was just Sukiyaki $52.8 pp with premium scotch fillet wagyu! Delicious. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, bringing us on journey on how and where the food came from mostly central Tokyo.
Wouldn't mind trying out different meals at this venue again or perhaps having another Sukiyaki meal. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!
Come here for the 8 courses for a birthday party. Food was good but I was expecting more based on the reviews. Maybe should try their grilled menu next time. I think their lunch menu has better value.
"...SOME OF THE BEST WE'VE HAD - BUT A LITTLE LIGHT ON SERVING SIZE..."
I bought 2 Groupon Vouchers - $158 - for 4 persons to eat at HIBACHI JAPANESE GRILL in King Street CBD..
We had a set menu - 7 courses with sake..
Only 1 of us wanted the sake - they didn't offer anything else, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, as a replacement [not good, especially when 2 of the diners were under 18, surely a flask of sake costs more than a glass of soft-drink, you'd think so?] ..
Anyway, the menu:
- 4 x miso soup
- 2 octopus balls x 4
- 3 slices inside out roll x 4
- 3 pieces pork OR vegetable gyoza x 4
- 6 pieces assorted tempura x 2 [only 2 prawns in total, we had to cut them in half..just a little mean..]
- 1 x very small platter sizzling pork rasher and 1 x very small platter spicy tofu served with individual portions steamed white rice
- 1 tiny scoop green tea OR black sesame ice-cream x 4 [other diners had multiple assorted scoops with freshly sliced fruits]
It was ALL gorgeous.. high quality.. super fresh.. superbly prepared and beautifully presented..
BUT.. for a $160 SPECIAL, plus an extra $30 for a couple of LLB's - yes, good ones, by the way - we kinda felt a little cheated - the serves were nowhere near the size the other tables were receiving - we left, still a bit hungry - not good when you've just spent almost $50 per person and the eatery's only in King Street..
Anyway, still want to go back - next time without a voucher - DEFINITELY without a voucher... sometimes these damn things can be a bit of a crock...!!!
Visited on Friday 05 March 2016 for dinner.
Never been disappointed! I just love the exquisite food and friendly but professional service here! I mostly come here with some colleagues for lunch just for some bentos, occasionally when I have time I bring. My family here for dinner. Everything from entrée to mains is SUPERB! Super delicious, I think they said that all their sauces are traditionally hand made by the chef, it was first introduced to my by some Japanese friends, they said it was truly authentic.
One of my favourite lunch spots in the CBD. Quality sashimi and some of the best gyoza I've had, even compared with Japan itself. Always friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
I went here with about ten colleagues while on a business trip and had one of the most enjoyable meals of my stay in Melbourne. We were told to remove our shoes and we were seated at the big table in a separate room on the first floor. The waitress was happy to field questions and make recommendations on sake, wine, and entrees. For starters, I ordered the hotate misoyaki which was scallops in a miso sauce. It sounded good and the menu and it didn't disappoint. The scallops were small, but they were cooked perfectly and the miso sauce was very good but not overpowering. If you like miso, I think you'll be very satisfied with this appetizer. For my main, I ordered the buta kimuchi which was a stir-fry of pork belly, bell peppers, onions, and a sesame sauce served sizzling on a hot plate. This had major flavor too and just the right amount of spiciness for me - quite spicy but not gonna hurt me. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and still a little crispy. The waitress was very patient with our large group and was friendly from start to finish. The atmosphere is nice but not too formal. Just be prepared to leave your shoes behind for a while. I feel like the name of this place is too simple and doesn't do justice to how good the food was. I definitely recommend them!
Hibachi you are an absolute BEAUTY. The sushi boat satisfied the punters and revved up our appetites for the volcano rolls which were very quickly devoured. However, I have to say the highlight was the tempura prawns. What a peach of a restaurant!
Habachi is a really good place for Japanese food. All the wait staffs are very nice. What I have to mention is that the sushi sashimi, especially the seafood there taste very fresh :)
I love this restaurant and I really recommend it to the ones who love healthy Japanese dishes. You will not say " no" to their service and quality.
The volcano roll is pretty fantastic. Great service too. The deluxe sushi platter is a favorite of mine. Their portions are also very generous.
lovely day with a lovely person in a lovely restaurant.
Cook is amazing with a delicious sashimi super combo and the nice hotpot! Haha! They have lunch set meal and enen... Can try next time!
Great experience in japanese restaurant, food is fresh and yummi, i love the boat of sushi and sashimi, service is excellent, will come again.
We came here a few time for dinner. We had a great experience here. The restaurant is nice and clean. The staff were polite and had a very good customer service training. At our first visit, We ordered the set menu A. It was worth the money, but it was quite a lot for 2 people. So the second visit, we ordered the set menu B, it was enough for 2 people. All dishes were very delicious. The sashimi was very fresh. Dessert was awesome! Although the price was expensive but it was worth having the fresh sashimi. I really recommend this place. Overall restaurant environment was very nice.
Best japanese food, friendly service, cozy place , highly recommended, will go again
Situated in Melbourne’s most bustling King Street, this dinning setting has indeed the show, the style, and the taste… and seriously, they really seem to know to know the touch of presentation on the plate… hats off! Small portions yet again for quite a dear price, may I say …but hey, I went in prepared. Nevertheless, the satisfaction existed on discovering true...
The freshness you can't beat anywhere
Decent lunch spot. Had the tonkatsu bento set, which had generous servings of tonkatsu. This was complemented by a side of sashimi, freshly prepared by the sushi chef, and a couple of fried chicken ribs with mayo, and miso soup, steamed rice and salad. Pricing was quite reasonable for the quality and serving size.. Atmosphere was also conducive for a conversation, which I liked. Will return!
Good food and very generous portion sizes. I had the tempura bento box and, though more expensive than other Japanese places around the serving size and taste made up for it! The only thing was service was a bit slow at lunch when I went considering it wasn't packed out, so may not be one to try in a lunch hour!
The lunch special is great value - you get plenty of food. i like the sashimi set but i would suggest getting something else as you get significantly less food than the other options (which come with sashimi anyway!).
Will deffo come back!!!. Great atmosphere, amazing food, great service, variety selection of wines and sakes!! Will come back for lunch bento set and kamo soba!!! And will not forget volcano rolls and the deluxe sushi sashimi they served on a boat!!!!! Take my words people!!!
Best Japanese food in Melbourne. Very impressed with the service
I've been to this place quite a few times and the food and service have always been great. The lunch menu is good value, staff are friendly, and love their sashimi.
Had the tonkatsu bento on the lunch menu. Excellent. The sashimi was very fresh.
Good service.
Amazing! As Molly would say, do yourself a favor. Ask David for the specials or for something off the menu, you won't be disappointed. Please do the Tataki beef ( ragyu or scotch fillet- we had that) and the Volcano Roll). If you are celebrating food, friendship or Friday, have a private dining room experience, it's well worth it!
Beautifully decorated - Nice Food. This beautifully decorated restaurant is certainly impressive visually. The Sukiyaki Bento Box Lunch Special was nice, and I liked it, but not overly impressive. Other meals on the table looked spectacular and the comments from our lunchime partners were very positive.
I just finished having bento with precision cut sashimi and light tempura. It's the first time in months I've had tempura that wasn't greasy or tasting like oil left at the bottom of the fridge. So impressed, the sushi chef had pride in his craft making simple yet balanced plates. Hygiene was impeccable, even had a peek in the back kitchen and found the same standard. Run by Cantonese staff like most Japanese restaurants, but it didn't mar the wonderful service I got. I very much hope the standard doesn't drop over the years.
Way too expensive for what it is: basic, tasty Japanese food. Nothing special.
Just fantastic. What a lovely place. Fresh and tasty Japanise food is very hard to find.
Sushi/sashimi just melt in your mouth - amazing.
Came in last week. Loved the food in particular the crumbed prawns in BBQ sauce and the pork gyoza. Service was good and quick. Will be back for sure too many things on menu to try in one setting
Had the most amazing sushi and sashimi last night! I love the quality food and friendly service at this restaurant. Definitely a favourite!
Fun night here for a late night dinner. Looked a but lame and heard lots of cantonese (not Japanese) from the staff, but this place rocks! Menu is vast enough to satisfy most palates, the food is Delicious and flavourful. Potential to become my local although slightly pricey

The sushi and sashimi are very fresh. Volcano rolls are must try if you don't mind getting fat. Sakes are alright but they are quite expensive. Made me broke. Love the manager, he used to be professional body builder. Nice butt. Went there twice. Average spend about 100 bucks per person. Some items on the menu can make you nervous when you see tour bill.
Domo Arigato Hibachi. We really enjoyed the food and thoughtful service. Precision executed flavours, high standard quality food.
Skewers were a bit overcooked/dry though.
Price slightly steep for what you get.
Portions maybe too small also.
Overall, an enjoyable experience and will visit again.
This restaurant was absolutely exqusite. The staff were amazing. The owner was fantastic and the food was delicious. To be fair the price of the food doesn't do it justice. We would have paid double for our meals. It definately could not get any better than this. Yum!!!!
Excellent variety, from the finest freshest sushi and sashimi to barbecued delicacies, traditional rice and noodle dishes. Highly recommend the spider roll and fried oysters
Imagine a bunch of yukata clad youngsters waddling around in the CBD, what a sight to behold in Melbourne — well, I exaggerate. Only three/nine of us were in the Japanese festive spirit. Our outfits were met with intrigue by passersby and the occasional r
Nice sushi place to have a relatively okay priced sit down meal. There was one sushi/sashimi chef who did well to keep up with all the orders coming his way, he seemed frantic at times, poor guy... if it was at capacity they would probably struggle.
The pandan sauce on the salmon nigiri was a nice twist.
UPDATED IN NOVEMBER 2018
The restaurant has new staff (not sure if new owners as well ) and the service is MUCH better.. Now back on my favourite Japanese list. Very good quality dishes and comprehensive wine list... well done guys!!!
The presentation and freshness is fantastic!
Previous review:
Generally easy to get a table (for two) here on Friday nights,
Menu is good and the food is consistently OK.
The wait service is a bit hit and miss however..
Had a wonderful dining experience here. I was absolutely blown away from the flavours of the deluxe banquet. The quality was amazing, food was always fresh and delicious. Charlie, Nick and the rest of the wait staff were lovely and professional. Adored our experience here! Would love to repeat the whole thing over again.
Used a Groupon and everything was great! Very quiet for a Saturday night which seemed strange, but we enjoyed every dish they bought over, especially the teriyaki salmon. Service was great and neither did we feel rushed or had to wait a long time inbetween courses.
Underrated, authentic, delicious Japanese food. The food is pricey-ish but well worth it, as I find that you’re paying for quality and not quantity. Amazingly fresh and delicious sushi (Deluxe Sushi 3rd option abt $45), as well as Unagi ($30).
Fantastic service, delicious food!
I've been to this place a few times now. The food is always amazing. The fish is fresh and tasty. Service is always friendly and polite and has good advice for things on the menu. The saki list is very extensive and they give advice on how to have each one. Everything that you could want from a restaurant. I'll be regularly dining here.
