Review Fu Lu Chinese Cafe - Melbourne

Trader Joe
Classic old school Chinese. Been there for decades. As everyone says, the fu Lu fried rice is the best in Melbourne. I add chili and cashew nuts. The sweet and sour pork also good. Sometimes the dishes get a bit samey, but that’s kinda the case with 70s style westernised Chinese food. Very fast service and friendly. Place seats about 8 people, so mainly takeaway. This place is worth traveling for! Very cheap Chinese food!

Awesome take out, can also dine in, fabulous food. Highly recommended. Open from 5pm, can always ring to confirm.

I count myself very fortunate that Fu Lu Chinese Cafe is my local Chinese. The Fu Lu Special Fried Rice is delicious and packed with a mixture of meats. Probably the best I've every had!! Their Mongolian Beef and Crispy Skin Chicken were also fabulous. I highly recommend stopping in for a takeaway or for a meal. The staff were friendly, my meal was ready surprisingly quickly and the prices were good.

Great service, fast and easy. Ordered the Fu Lu Fried Rice, authentic flavours that very much feels like home. Uncle Roger will approve @mrnigelng

This is the best little Chinese spot in Melbourne ! I love it and they are so nice as well. The biggest recommendation is crunchy pepper squid. So so good. Get it in me

This place has good takeaway Chinese food. The dishes are healthy because they come with plenty of vegetables and you can ask for reduced salt. I recommend the beef black bean or the stir fried rice with prawns, egg and ham. Not badly priced but they only accept cash.

Delicious authentic Chinese food. Definitely coming back!

O.M.G. I think I just found the best Chinese takeaway in Melbourne. A small and clean shop on quiet Rathdowne Street. Wonderful, warm, polite, friendly service as soon as we walked in....and the food says it all. The best special fried rice for only $8.80 (large). When I think special fried rice I imagine beanshoots, egg, ham, shrimp, spring onion....and this had all the ingredients plus the flavour to match. You’d be surprised at how many places sell “special” fried rice which is in no way “special” at all. But this was perfect.
Plus their crunchy squid with vegetables = fantastic. Will definitely recommend to others and will be coming back for more!!

A great old style Chinese restaurant that combines good quality food at good value price. One of the few places with self made spring rolls- excellent. Best value Chinese (Hong Kong Cantonese cooks) in the area by far.

Awesome no frills local takeaway Chinese food at great prices and very fast. The sesame prawns are AMAZING! The other stuff is pretty good... recommend the Sichuan chicken.

My casual little chinese eatery in Carlton. Little family run business. Simple cheap good Asian food. Favourite by far would be Fu Lu special fried rice & the beef and black bean stir fry. ( also can't go past the big spring roll for entree)

Revisited this place that was hugely popular 20 years ago. New owners have maintained the same menu and cheap prices. The service was very friendly and the dishes a generous size. We ordered chicken satay and roast pork with vegetables. The food could benefit from the addition of more flavourful ingredients as it seems a bit bland.

Good old Fu Lu, the friendly old favourite! Been coming here for years, especially for the Crunchy Pepper Squid, which is always a mighty tasty treat.

Feels like home. My wife to me to Fu Lu when we were dating in 1989. But by that time I had already known about it for two years. Now we take our children there so that makes us 2nd generation Fu Lu's. Love the Singapore Noodle and the Royal fried rice. Proper comfort food for the family after a day out in the city.

Unpretentious Comfort Food. Fu Lu has been my fallback for decades at any time that I don't feel like cooking or friends have dropped in and we just feel like dining in. My favourites are Fu Lu Special Fried rice and Beef with Tomato and Bean Curd. Used to also alternate with Rathdowne Noodle Shop but sadly that is no longer an option. Very glad that Fu Lu is still going, if it was not it would be greatly missed.

Revolting. The dishes were extremely oily and lacking flavour. I prefer Carlton Wok down the street.

Don't come here for gourmet fare: this is very much quick, Westernised Chinese comfort food. I like the fried noodles and the house special fried rice, and the stir-fries. Basically I go here when I can't be bothered making this kind of food at home myself. Service is quick and friendly and it's open late, which I love as I can pick up some takeaway if I've been working late. There's not much of an eat-in atmosphere.

I love Chinese and have eaten at countless haunts across Melbourne and sampled Chinese fare in Beijing some years ago too. I am not comparing a Chinese experience to that of a home grown meal but that was by far the worst Chinese I have ever tasted. I am really not sure how this place got positive feedback... The lady was lovely but all the dishes were devoid of any authentic flavours and substance. The lemon chicken was horrible and full of bones and grit. The sweet corn soup had a glue like consistency and tasted like watered down stock. The remaining dishes were uninspiring and the flavours that define wholesome Chinese cooking were non-existent. Very disappointing indeed, and won't be back again despite the really nice lady who served me.

Only ones there late on a Mon night, cheap, fast service - but would want to be as only ones there. Standard Chinese but good, nice staff. Was quiet and cosy, so nice with so many noisy places around

Very very bad. Worst lemon chicken I have ever had, it was dry and the chicken supplied was an assortment of random pieces, all containing bones.
Terrible.

Great Stuff. I have been frequenting Fu Lu since about 1982 and the food has been reliable and good and cheap for 30 years. The people who run it are so warm and friendly and it is such a relief not to cook on Friday night. I love Fu Lu!
Too Old To Play Safe
I have been going to Fu Lu's over the past 30 years - since I was a student in Carlton. Not so much now that I'm many suburbs away. But each time I'm back I have an absolute pig out. Standard chinese takeaway fare but just yummy.
