Review Biryani House - Melbourne

Such a nice experience. Order chicken baryani and I give 10 out of 10 for taste. Rice was cooked really well. Bryani spies were not out of order, they look really taste while you are eating. Easy going staff, when we arrived it was full house still the way staff was doing its job was remarkable . Thanks for the food. Keep up the good work.

Ordered a goat biryani. Got it with complimentary chutney. Good amount of meat I should say. I was expecting like one or two pieces but it has like 5. Anyways, nicely cooked and tender meat, and delicious overall and only for 14 AUD.

Look at the Dum-Biryani pic I posted. I ordered from "Biryani house" two times. First time, the rice quality was bad. But, my second experience was terrible as the biryani quality was the worst I ever tasted. The Rice clearly was taken out of a fridge & re-heated in oven and then delivered to me. The Chicken in this pic obviously looks like it's a left over piece the previous day or improperly cooked. My $16 got wasted on UBER EATS twice

I couldn't be happier with the food. Briyani was okay but chicken korma... I never had the worst korma ever it looks green so awaful. I even double check if that was korma just to make sure I am receiving the food that i have ordered, and the staff said it wasšŸ˜ not going back again..

Highly non recommendable šŸ˜¤ Worst Indian cuisine ever!! Kadhai Paneer had a lot of food colors & tasted very bad. Not properly cooked Butter chicken was very plain except the gravy had a specific taste of coriander. Naan felt like rubber. Couldnā€™t eat at all. Never go back to this restaurant

Unhygienic place, cooking oil and groceries sitting inches away from the SEAT in the toilet. Front staff had very dirty clothes on, we ordered 2 biryanis but chucked them in the bin outside because the place looked filthy. This used to be my goto place for anything hyderabadi but i guess not anymoreā€¦..šŸ¤®šŸ¤®šŸ¤®šŸ¤®

My go to place for biryani.. I've been having their goat/lamb biryani since 2014 and my husband since 2007.. believe me it comes out with exactly same taste every single time. Me and my husband might have had their biryani 100s of times. Fantastic aroma and flavourful rice.. reminds me of Hyderabad. Now our kids love it too.!!

I donā€™t know what all the hate is about. Let me set the scene: my family and I had just hopped out of the cab and we realised it was nearly midnight. We looked around google for a restaurant and immediately found Biryani House. We ordered a butter chicken, masala and a few other dishes. They came out promptly and we loved it. They close late and the food is good for the price. You will expect to find it a little hard to find a table as taxi drivers are constantly taking breaks inside. Overall really good and a lovely experience.

Biryani was ok . Chicken Karahi was disappointing had to bin it.

I wish I had the choice of giving not even one star .. bad experience ..

We order goat and chicken biryani. The portions were generous. However, their biryani is just okay. Staff was nice and responsive. Should try their menu next time

Biryani is decent much better than what you get at some restaurants.

This takeaway place is not even worth for lowest rating. Have never come across such a worst food and customer service. Had a takeaway home delivery and the 2x staters ( chicken 65 and Haryali kebab) were too salty and no flavour at all. I ordered a kadai chicken to go with naan but received a tomato chicken in the takeaway bag. Attitude was shocking- very abrupt when questioned about their error..
The goat biryani was good but you may be better off visiting in the evening. Most of the items on the menu (except biryani and a few others) are not available in the afternoon at opening and you can't even get a cup of tea. A better option would be to call in advance and organise Take Away instead. My rating is more for the service.

Heard about this place from colleague of mine, tried their chicken biryani and order some of the dish from their hot bar. I personally dont think they give care about the food, chicken biryani taste alright. However the other dishes from the hot bar taste overcooked butter chicken taste like soup. Basmati rice dry and grainny like raw rice not pleasant to eat at all and it ended up in the bin. Hopefully this can be improved.

Had tried their lamb briyani today, i honesty didn't figure out if it was briyani or some boiled rice with color, my friends always talk so high about this place, but sadly i am disappointed.

I tried chicken harayali and lamb kadai hoping that restaurant will do justice in the name of Hyderabad, India. I must admit one of the pathetic food I ever tried. The chicken gravy was so watery and the lamb pieces were tangy in taste which could not let me complete the food itself. On Top of that, it was owner etiquette, upon seeing and realising could not take the feedback positively.

Itā€™s tough to realise that what taste and food they are serving in the name of Hyderabad and delhi!!!!
Madhu
Pretty okay, the issue I have here is i don't taste much of a difference in dishes when i order the gravy's/curries, they do have the same base ,the only difference is the addition of ingredients in the main dish that you order, the naans were pretty good though, the biriyani is ok.. Used to be a wonderful outlet, sad it's not the same anymore

Wow!! This is a bad biryani place. Cramped and stuffed up. Staff move around wearing stinking dirty apron.
We ordered chicken 65 - no salt, no taste. We ordered methi chicken which was methi Malawi chicken. The butter nun was good as it did not have white flour.
Finally we ordered lamb biryani. It was spiked with cardamom, no salt.
Whoever tells you this is biryani. Don't trust them.

Had tried both chicken and lamb biryani on 2 different occasions. Tasted good. Chicken piece was well cooked and so is the lamb. If you are looking for more of a Hyderabadi dum biryani, then you can give it a try. The Mirchi ka salan was not served with the biryani and had to request it but it was bland and a big let down.
Some Bunee Loves Food
Ordered my dinner tonight through an app. The lamb curry was very salty and lamb wasn't too tender. The pappadums were nice and crispy but was also very salty.
Pradeep Chirakkal
soggy waste biriyani.. place is so unclean as well..biriyani was just watery boiled rice with waste goat pieces.(yes waste fatty pieces).. and I didnt eat even half of eat.. if you look in to their kitchen...yuk.
Shruthi Kulal
We ordered Chicken biryani and chicken 65 and they turned out very bad. Chicken 65 was soggy and tasteless. Biryani of was just boiled rice and chicken with oil. No flavour and no taste.
Anjul Gupta
average biryani served with just a yogurt dip, no curry on the side. felt pricey for the quality served. the ambience is like that of a food court place, service times are ok. The only major plus was portion size. 1 biryani is probably enough for 2 ppl.
Anshul Khurana
This place has been consistently good for the last 8 years I have been going there. Great curries, chicken 65, garlic naan bread, Biryani, I never get tired of them.
Arbaaz Akbar
Horrible place. The chicken 65 was half-cooked. Had to wait 30-40 mins for the chicken biryani. The worst part- the biryani had just ONE chicken piece (again uncooked). Awful experience. Avoid this place. Cheers

Hands down the worse briyani Iā€™ve had. The place used to serve above average food and now itā€™s just down the gutter.

Got the goat briyani, which came with 5 pieces of meat that had bones in it. Total amount of meat in the whole dish would have probably been just 20g( I run a restaurant so I know how portioning works ) And a truck load of tasteless rice.

They served the dish with just the yoghurt raita and not the curry which was illustrated in the picture( and Iā€™ve been here a couple of times previously, were they served that curry as a condiment )

Cashier was busy on his phone, as if he was some business magnate. Couldnā€™t even have courtesy to ask me to hold on. There was another person behind me waiting to order.

$11.50 for this joke of a meal when the food cost was probably 60 to 70cents max. If there was one restaurant Iā€™d tell people to stay away from,
It would be this. Terrible

Looking for a good biryani in Melbourne? Biryani house is the place to be. Ambience...zero. Service...rushed. Quality...heavenly. My wife had the biryani and it was authentic and cooked to perfection. The rice was long and pure. I had naan with chicken and it was faultless. There's a reason this establishment is crowded and busy! Quality is great, service is poor! You decide...
Jake Matthew
The most incredible food ever, been coming here for years! Everything is cooked perfectly every time. Best garlic naan Iā€™ve ever eaten. Truly delicious.
Gdkf
Often smells so good when Iā€™m walking past so was pretty keen to finally try this place! Portion sizes were decent as were the prices however nothing overly memorable about the experience. Must admit the meat in the curry and biryani (lamb and goat) were very tender. We tried to order 2 dishes and they ā€˜didnt have any in stockā€™. How can a restaurant not have any veggie curry?!Furthermore worst raita I have had. Bland and extremely watery! Very disappointing considering how busy they seem to get!?

Guys this is a place to go, when you are not feeling to cook the places to go in my list would definitely be this. Great on the buds and pocket friendly as well. Even from people around the world have a taste of what India eats at times and why they relish their food. This is a good try for the people who lack the knowledge about biryani.
Though nothing really fancy about the decor but still not a bad try.
Amysyder
The food was okay, donā€™t know if I would come here again but if you want cheap Indian food then this place will suffice. The portion sizes were filling and decent for the price but itā€™s very much a take away restaurant rather than a place to sit down and have dinner, even though there are tables and chairs. I didnā€™t enjoy the fact my naan bread and vegetable curry were swimming in butter.

I seriously donā€™t understand why people like me fall trap to this name game ā€œ Biryani House ā€œ. This is highly misleading folks if you can simply deal with all the garbage and crap that is served from their kitchen. I went online and ordered a dinner

Vegetable Samosa (2 Pcs)( Boiled potatoes)
Lamb Masala( The spice was like gun powder mixed with wasabi)
Shahi Paneer( any thing Shahi in it was the colour orange)
Hyderabadi Dum Biryani Goat( the goat must have died of pneumonia)
Butter Naan ( soggy papadams)
Garlic Naan( soggy papadams with garlic sprinkled on it )
Free Can of Soft Drink for orders over $40( which iam still waiting )

My bin that night was filled with biryani house stuff not to mentioned my grumbling tummy which was starving that night.

Thank you biryani house for that eventful dinner. I shall be grateful if you stop spreading your infection of ā€œ crap foodā€ in and around Melbourne.
At one point of time this was a my favourite biryani joint. Their lunch meals were great too.

But this place has gone down in taste substantially. The biryani used to be flavourful and tasted just like authentic Hyderabadi Dum Biryani. But now itā€™s either too bland and oily or extremely spicy. And when I say spicy, not hot but the masalas are in excess and the ghee/dalda smells so bad that you know that the ratios of spices have been messed up.

Iā€™ve tried giving this place a lot of chances and did go back more than twice to make sure that it wasnā€™t a one-off but their consistency now seems to be in only making sure that the biryani is on the extreme side of the spectrum of bland or extremely spicy.

With a heavy heart, Iā€™d like to say that you should avoid this place.

My favorite indian restaurant. I ussually go for lunch with their menu in bain~marie. Meat n veggie curry with rice, and it only cost u $8.5. Their portion especially the rice is super generous, it always keep me full the whole day and even nite.
Matt McRobbie
Just terrible.Ā

I went on a recommendation and tried the lamb Biryani. Ā It isn't a biryani, its chunks of tasteless lamb added to greasy rice.Ā

No flavour, and an insult for $11.50. I tossed it. hope the seagulls enjoy it more than I did.

Best avoided.
Virdi3
Went there today just to try it out.
I ordered lamb do piaza and two naans .
They dont know the difference between naan and tandoori rotis.
Curry leaves were the only taste i could taste in lamb do piaza.
Pratik B. Prajapati
Worst Experience ever.

1) that look from that guy who served me, very angry. God knows for what??

2) ordered biryani, came without Salan, even though they had it behind the counter.

3) first biryani I had that came without Boiled egg. Had to pay $1 extra.

Biryani was very average, felt like I was eating boiled rice and boiled chicken.

Behold Desi Citizens of the Great Aussie Land... and also the other Homo Sapiens, in search of the Authentic Rice Dish of the Mughals and Nawabs (and others)...... If you like Biryani, this is where you've gotta be...

I have been disappointed by the dim witted, half Indian cuisines that other Indian budget places have offered so far at Melbourne, and I must say.... This place is as Authentic as Authentic can be (Add in the crammed space and little respect to hygiene).... Once you enter, it smells and feels like the rustic old Hyderabad :)Ā

Trust me, if this place was any bigger and cleaner..... They are a serious contenders for a 5 Star rating!

Back to the food ..... One word for their Biryanis.... Amazing!Ā

Price, quantity, quality and aroma.... All are perfect.... I am sure Ā that I can be hanged by the tight necked elite of the Biryani world.... But if you have ever Eaten a Biryani at Hyderabad's famous small shops (Mostly from the small nooks and lanes of the Old City).... You will agree with me, that this place is as close as it gets to the real deal

For me, the real game changer has been their 'TANDOORI CHICKEN (TC)', and unlike the most other places at Melbourne.... Their tandoori chicken comes from a Tandoor! The great Indian Clay Oven... At least, it has been cooked on Charcoals, My nose bears witness to the aroma that still seems to be lingering at the back of my head,,..... You can surely savor far better TC in India.... But remember, this ain't no India.... and this is a good job done by them, for being miles away from home.....

You may wonder at my sheer love for this place, and yet a rating that seems far from my words.... Well, the problem really was the fact, that this place is not fit for a Sunday noon Lunch... I mean, just ask them to parcel it and go home and Enjoy the treats.... But the restaurant itself is very tiny and in urgent need of hygienic overhaul of the places Ā of the calls from Nature...

FINAL VERDICT..... Indians , Countrymen (plus women) and lovers of the great Indian food..... Please visit this place, and 'Take Away' your favorite meal.....Ā
Cheers!

There's an old adage that says "eat where the locals eat". Well in Melbourne if an Indian restaurant is often frequented by Indians it must be pretty good. And BH is simply that - good. Very good in fact. Having lived in India (Hyderabad, coincidentally) and nowadays frequently travel to various parts of India for work, the dum biryani and lamb kurma here is as authentic as it gets. Yes the place is semi-dirty and claustrophobic, but my goodness I don't think you can better better value for Indian food anywhere else. So stop by, hang out with the Indian migrants in this great city and enjoy.

We tried food second time in a row and naans were not at all soft, cheese naan hardly had any cheese in it, food was not having any good flavours and every time I end up getting stomach infection after eating their food, experience was very bad, never going to eat their food or to recommend it to anyone in future.

The only think I like there is biryani. The service is hopeless. The staff has no experience of customer service. No uniforms for staff and even questionable personal hygiene. You can see serving staff dipping fingers into the bowl of rice while bringing it to your table. NO GLOVES. The kitchen looks like a sauna/coal mine with 12-15 men trapped with full clothes and facial hair. How no one in the legal precinct noticed the sweatshop??
Today (8th dec, 2016, 8.30pm) there was a new guy at the cash counter who took my order for 2 biryanis and a tandoori chicken. After making us wait for a long time he gave us biryanis and we thought he would bring us the tandoori chicken after sometime. When asked about the dish we were waiting for, he rudely responds that we didn't order it at the first place. He lied just because his boss was making food inside the kitchen and didn't get this order earlier. The boss seemed angry and the staff blames it on the customer. How convenient!!

If they had any manner I would had forgiven the delay but blaming me made my guest mor shocked as it was his first time there.

Food good, service lame. Too bad not going there again. They are trying to replicate an Iranian cafe from Hyderabad. Watch out !!

The place where you can crash anytime, the Biryani and other main course are good in taste. My favourite dalcha was very nicely prepared, the main course in lamb are really tasty.

Their biriyani is to die for!!! So nice flavour but tiny bit spicy. Chicken was juicy & flavourful. Staff very kind & friendly. Price is cheap. Clean simple interior. Small menu but that's what nice about the joint that they does it well. I remember I tried Authentic biriyani when I was overseas & this place resembles that! Overall rating 3.8*

Naan bread like CARDBOARD!
Chicken biriani?? FRIED RICE WITH A CHICKEN WING THROWN IN!
NEVER AGAIN!
Lied to by manager. Told me that this was how they did biriani, I've been eating Indian food for nearly 40 years, worst everšŸ˜¤

- Atmosphere 2/5
- Service/Staff: 2/5
- Food: 4/5
ā€¢ Value for money: 4/5

ā€¢ Revisit? YES!
ā€¢ Must order: The lamb biryani! Or chicken as a 2nd option.

My review is mostly based on the Biryani at this place! I mean come on, it is Biryani house... and thats what they're REALLY specialised at. However, they don't deliver in many other dishes. So beware! My suggestion is to go for the Biryani here! Even though the service is poor, that won't stop me from coming for the delicious Biryani's!
Earlene Go-Reyes
Order their chicken tikka masala and saffron rice. Portion for the rice was huge! Chicken tikka masala's spice level is spot on. It may be best to do a take away instead of dining in.

The photo says it all.

I ordered Aloo Baignan. It's supposed to be a dry-ish curry with eggplant, normally also with potatoes and onions.

What I received on my pickup was a small container of lukewarm oil, with some eggplant and potatoes floating in it.

Absolutely atrocious. It was $7.90 and I feel like it's about $7.90 worth of vegetable oil.

What also was annoying was the stares I copped when I corrected the cashier when he said the order came to $9.90. He told me it was 8.90 wth a surcharge for an eftpos card. I ordered on menulog and he price stated 7.90 and no such surcharge mentioned anywhere.

Anyway. I had one mouthful to try the potato and threw it out. I'm nervous I'll get sick now. The eggplant skins in the curry are green, it must be *that* old, they're not even purple.
Gemima
Okay if you are not after anything too authentic and just need a curry fix. Curries were bland and nothing great. We had butter chicken and rogan josh. Naan breads were petty average.
Teddybkool
The best briyani I've had in Melbourne. Authentic Hyderabad taste. I tried the dessert as well. It's pretty good. Service is acceptable. The place was packed.
Sarocha Boonprakong
Sharing just tandoori chicken(full) and rice are already enough for my tiny friend and I. This is my second time in indian restaurant- not so bad.

Maybe come back again
Nice work guy
Nelly
I got the lamb curry. I was told it was spicy. The thing is I got so little of it with a mass amount of rice. So I didnt really get to taste it, as for the lamb it was dry and chewy. Usually when I order curry the meat is so soft I dont need a knife. I needed more than a knife. Grrrr!
Amit Bhatnagar
Chicken biryani is made of fried chicken and rice... Pathetic food not at all fresh Insult to hyderabi name here .. Go at your own risk and if you looking for cheap non tasty crap food please visit.
Sarah O
I really like this spot for its authentic tasting dishes and prompt service.

It's a cheap eats that's great for those nights when you don't want to be cooking dinner and are looking for fast and tasty.

I enjoy their haryali kebab, chicken biryani and hariyali chicken!
Ron
The place is a bit disorganized especially during peak hour but so far this is the only place in the area that cook a very good Biryani Chicken. It worth the wait eventough I have to wait for 30 minutes for the chicken Biryani. Portionwise is very large compare to other Indian places. This is on of the places in Melbourne which portion size is comparable to the one in the U.S. 2 curry ( 1 veggie & 1 meat) is definitely a steal at 8.00 price and 2 veggie curry at 7.5 is a wow considering how expensive it is to live in Melbourne

I wouldn't have went in this restaurant if not for my friend's recommendation. The restaurant looks a bit run down but the food is pretty authentic. They had a decent selection of food and an especially large selection for vegetarians. We had the butter chicken, fried rice, biryani rice, garlic naan and gobi 65.

Butter chicken: Gravy was smooth and although I only ordered the small portion, there were more chicken than I expected. Tasty and not too heavy.

Fried rice: Was a bit disappointed because my friend highly recommended me to get it. Tasted rather plain on its own but was a good complement to the butter chicken.

Biryani: Was a bit too spicy to some of my friends' liking. They literally sweated when they were eating it. I found it rather flavourful. The portions of chicken or lamb given were decent as well. I didn't eat the lamb one but the chicken was savoury. Spiced yoghurt was a nice addition to the rice.

Garlic naan: Was average because it was not as fluffy as I would like it to be. Flavour-wise, it was alright.

Gobi 65: Probably the most interesting and best side dish. Fried cauliflower tasted like fried chicken on the outside and potatoes on the inside. Yums!

We also ordered the Chai but it was a little disappointing. The chai taste wasn't strong enough and there was too much milk. Service was average but portions were definitely enough to keep you full. Will revisit if I'm craving for Indian food whenever I'm in the area again.
Manujaya Dissanayake
No taste at all. Tried both lamb and chicken biriyani. There were no flavor in the rice. What they serve as biriyani is not the biriyani that i tasted in india. The only positive is them giving plenty of rice.
Julian B Ho
Heard a lot about this place but the reality was way below expectations. Ordered the lamb biryani. It came out dry, tasteless and extremely salty. The only pluses were from order to plate was like half a minute and you get lots of rice.
I Am Cheng
The Briyani rice is lack of flavour, Briyani rice suppose have a lot of herb, such as star anise, clove and so on. But the side dish are good.
Panda
I am only rating the food and how quick the food is served- best Briyani ever and the cost is unmatchable-!! You get served very fast too.. If you are looking for a quick feed this is definitely a good stop. It has never failed us.. And we have been there about 10 times since mid 2014. If you are looking for ambience- don't even attempt to try this place.
Bgv
Good Hyderabadi Biriyani but best to avoid curries and naan. They actually taste awful. Cheap eat out for quick food. But pretty miser as u don't get what u ask for. Don't expect customer service. Smelly toilet and crowded kitchen raises some eyebrows!
Alanf
A Terrible Gastronomic Experience. The food here is inedible. The curries look bland and are tasteless. Look elsewhere!
Cutedevil.tanushree
Very disappointing. 1. Below than average food(not even close to decent Indian/Pakistani food)
2. Rude service
3. Sticky tables, overall un-hygienic
In the crux, not coming back here ever. If you want to have a good biryani better to go to Bonefire on Sydney road.
Foxcarlo934
Worst food , service & manager and staff of Biriyani House. My friend recommend about Biriyani house on king street CBD . I been there first time order chicken biriyani but there is no taste and feel like I m eating the rise only and that was not even cook well and manager was very very rude illiterate poor customer service and the chicken was also expired so many people complaint while I was eating . I will never ever go back to that place and manager trying to be a greedy salesman try to sale cold drinks , and other dishes too.....
Malikusama789
Worst service + worst food. We went for lunch at biryani house. The food had no taste, we tried a few dishes and all of them were tasteless . The service was really bad, on top of that the manager was very rude and tried to over charge. The plates and classes were stinking. Never going back.

This place makes their own spices out the back unlike most Indian food places you eat at. Itā€™s packed full of Taxi drivers who know gold when they find it..Ā Flavors pack a punch here so you might get a sore tum later but worth it. lunch time Fav on Fridayā€¦ 7.894/10 Boiled Potatoes Ā Ā Ā Ā Advice: Amazing food Northern Indian Style.. Try it if you like spiceā€¦

Food is average but... .. I really didn't enjoy the atmosphere...
I suppose its almost a takeaway or a food court type place so I am unfair.. but
I drive past here often and always wanted to try it,
The only thing I was hesitant about was that there were always and I mean always dozens of Indian taxi drivers around there...
eating or hanging around..

The time we decided to go and try the food, we were faced with staring Indian taxi drivers..
Anyways conclusion is that I didn't like the atmosphere and the food was way to average for me to go back for more..

Good Food. Quite surprised to read the bad reviews of Biryani House. Used to work in Melbourne city and frequent the place, and now visit the Doncaster branch often. The biryani is good - the quality of the basmati rice is 5star, cooked to perfection - fluffy, and moist without being overcooked./undercooked or soggy. Lamb biryani has lots of meat in it unlike the chicken version. Other curries, also good as were some of the tandoor dishes I tried. In fact I've brought food from there to serve for parties and gatherings and most people loved it. Customer service is not the best but then again Indians are not always full of the "Hi How are you" manner. (I'm from the subcontinent as well. I think most of the food is good quality and I've never ever got sick from there or unable to finish my meal. Takeaway is the best option as decor/setup is not the best but if you want quality Indian food at a very good price, you certainly can't go wrong. PS. Their DUM BIRYANI is a mildy spiced version - not the heavy biryani's with onion, capcicum, tomatoes etc and loads of chilli that you get in other Indian places... its rice and meat cooked with subtle spices... Perfect.

Food. Worst food.No taste.Cook needs to get some training should have some skills.
Tried Biryani once don't want to try it again.
Chicken Palak was like a Palak Shake. uncooked chicken. no taste .
Will never Recommend

Good if you want cheap takeaway Biryani. I love biryani the proper way..

I was recommended this place to have good biryani from an Indian friend of mine,
so I was expecting proper biryani..

however it was no where near like the biryani I tasted in India..
rice was too soggy and warm...

also had a big piece of bone amidst the rice..
not happy fred
SandvichNomNomNom
Not bad, but not worth a long trip. Working near Biryani House for some time, I frequented it for a few months. My experiences were very mixed.

Their Chicken Biryani is always high quality, and their curries rarely disappoint. Noteworthy however, that the butter chicken can range from a pile of bland meat, to a bowl of raw chilli disguised as curry. But most often, it's a good balance.

The customer service leaves a bit to be desired, and it's always worth double checking your order before you leave. If your order is as simple as "Chicken Biryani with Naan, take away", you'll get your meal, and be happy with it. Go more complex than that, and results may vary.

If you work nearby and are curious, go ahead and try. But if you're looking to go to the city for a nice meal out, don't go out of your way.

Best Biryani in Australia. I used to go to this place all the time when I was in melbourne. I live in Brisbane now and I miss there Biryani. I went to this great place called Splice by Naveed indian restaurant in Brisbane and the Biryani was just fantastic and that reminded me of the great biryani I used to eat at the biryani house in Melbourne. Hats off!!
Karthik Reddy
Got a takeaway from their Doncaster place today, chicken 65 was like frozen pieces reheated, lamb biryani wasn't even close to a biryani...wouldn't recommend the place to anyone
Raj_aryan926
Ryan. Very bad customer service, feels like you are unwelcome there, the fat guy with beard on the king street branch is very rude and stupid. Will never go again. Lab biryani stinks.
Kristine
VERY POOR SERVICE!

Worse biryani I ever had it dosent taste like authentic hyderabadi buryani it taste like an experimental biryani .its not at all authentic hyderabadi food .
Melbourne Diner
Horrible, pathetic & disgusting!. Recently went to the Doncaster Store and disgusted by Biryani House. It was a shame on the name of indian food! Horrible & pathetic service. He called up 3 times just to confirm the order. We ordered palak paneer and he said there's no palak paneer curry left in the fridge?! Are you kidding me - you serve old food? Chilli Chicken was pure chilli & nothing else. We asked for a mild in all other curries and got ultra hot dishes that burnt us inside out - disgusting! Couldn't even finish the meal and had to order pizza!
Faheem
Hi i love the biryani of biryani house it's so tasty, but the customer service is very poor at hoppers crossing, not once but three time I experienced and I request to owner please trained ur staff for customer service, footscray branch is good for everything they must learned from them thanks

Excellent Biriyani...reminds of Hyderabad..

Spicy, but no tasty spices. Was very excited to try this place as I had heard great things. Service was fine and pretty speedy. Unfortunately, the food was under average. It's not that it was bad at all, it just didn't taste like anything. We ordered 8 different things, from appetizers to main meals. Some were very spicy, which is fine, but again nothing tasted like flavourful spices. Their prices are low, which is great, but the food should still be better, as for a few bucks more, you can get an excellent meal somewhere else.

Worst service and Poor quality. I visited first time yesterday and ordered chicken biryani. I got veg biryani instead when I complained the lady put the blame on the person in kitchen and gave me another "chicken biryani" which turned out to be lamb biryani. This time I ate it (only rice) and complained it ...but no excuse and no apology for serving wrong item. There was no taste in biryani except it was spicy rice. This would be my first and last visit to so called "Biryani House".

Pretty good. I am not sure at which Biryani House some of the negative reviews below dined at, but I was really pleased with the food and the value for money. The shop is somewhat unassuming with a very simple, yet tidy, set up. However, the food certainly makes up for this. The butter chicken and variety of curries were all well done, sizable portions and excellent value for money. I think the fact that this place has a line waiting every night speaks volumes!

Best biryani. Haleem is good. Luqmi is good too. Customer service is average to poor. Chicken 65 is crap. Tawa ghost is nice. Curries are average, nehari is yuck! Naan is average and did i say biryani is the beat but only if u have had that kind of biryani before. Or else u will find it ordinary.

Waste Of Money...Hirnadeous. Visited Footscary Branch...Not at all authentic ..Paid Biriyani price for dried rice for both veg and non-veg item... dry and dry. Tasteless. No aroma atall... Poor Customer Service... Confusing Menu Prices... Charged unnecessary dining cost where it is not mentioned anywhere in the Menu.. Never ever visit again.. will contact soon regarding price overcharge to commerce commission and consumer board.. One of the Very bad and bitter experience in dine out ...

Found chickenleg bone in veg biryani.
I told the guy at the counter and he said he has different containers for cooking veg and non veg.
First he lied and then he lied about liying ... The biryani was not good either...

Cheater staff- I am vegan and ordered veg biryani, he just removed chicken pieces from veg biryani and gave it as veg biryani next time when we asked he told they have seperate vessels for veg & non veg cooking. Second time i found chicken piece on veg biryani. I strongly do Not recommended this place for vegeterians

Bad service and food. My friend and I decided to this place yesterday. (Should've just gone again to the place a few doors up, MUCH better food and customer service)
Pretty much it was all the opposite of my experience at the other place, as we experienced this at Biryani House: As soon we walked in, customer service was rude. I ordered the 2 veg + rice and plain naan. When the naan was ready they shouted at us to pick it up (at the place a few doors up, SC, they bring it to your table).
The eggplant was bland as, and watery, not to mention the eggplant was tasteless. Eggplant cooked properly is defo not tasteless! I wonder how they prepped theirs, as it tasted like it's been microwaved or boiled or something. Did not taste as if it's been cooked in the sauce it came in as the eggplant was watery when you bite into it, plus the bland and thin sauce. The daal was simply salty. I make better daal at home. Just because I ate some bits of chilies it doesn't make it special.
The food overall was bland and salty.

I should've read all the other reviews that said this place was inauthentic with bad customer service. Will never go back. After having tried this place, from now on will always go to SC a few doors up with waaaaay better customer service (with a smile and actual service) AND waaaaay better food.
I suppose it was worth trying this place if only to highlight the glaring difference between these two nearby places.

Extremely BAD customer service. The guy at cash counter is the rudest prick ever seen in a restaurant. Do not recommend at all...

Unique taste but poor service

Decent food, so so service. Was a bit hesitant to give this place a try after reading a couple of the bad review. However I took the plunge today and order myself the notorious lamb biryani. First impression, the waiter could use a bit of smile therapy and yes true customer service is rare as hen's teeth here. The biryani however, was good. The serving is indeed huge and plenty of lamb on my order (perhaps the cook is in good mood) contrary to the previous review. Let down probly was they didn't offer me the curry sauce sides and give me the yoghurt by default. Anyway lesson learn, the place indeed offer decent biryani but do not expect 5 star customer service here.

Downhill. I was one of Biryani House's orginal customer, it's sad to see the decline, biryani has gone to crap, rest of the food is slowly getting there. the staff is the rudest i have seen, it's like they are doing us a favor serving us. if you dont like the job, go do something else. The food is bland, it used to be spicy. so basically i now go to Sarim's which is 30 mtrs up the road.

-----22 Aug, 2013-----

Crap food, crap service. rude staff. This used to be a cheap eat served fair food at a fair price, now since its busy quality of food is CRAP and the staff has progressively become ruder and ruder. dont bother there are heaps of better places to eat good indian food.

Dont waste money/////. We had a very bad experience.today.myself and my husband went there to have hydrebadi biriyani hearing that the shop is one of the most rated shops in melbourne. unfortunately we had to disagree with the openion. we had real hydrebadi biriyani from other shops and from from hydrebad as welland we know the real taste of the biriyani. what we got from the shop, we cant evan call biriyani.its just cheating people by saying this is the real authentic biriyani.we were really unsatisfied and just wasted money .just spoiled our rest of the dayyyyyyyyy

Worst Service!!!!. I had a very bad experience in Biryani House Footscray where i unfortunately went twice by hearing the top brand name of Biryani House in Melbourne!!! Phew!!!! Very first visit which was like a harassment as food was so scary that i couldn't even define how it was. When inquired, person at reception said that today only they received Red Chilly powder from Guntur. What a excuse!!!!! Fried rice was horrible as it was full of oil. Much much to hear guys.... Second visit in hunt of good hyderabadi haleem. Again heard brand name Biryani House and went to have it. Again it was tasteless and service was too poor and disgusting.... When asked for water, the guy said it is self service here and it was very humiliating to listen this. At the same time when other customers has asked for water, very politely and lovingly he went and kept the water.. The kind of service which has been provided was really frustrating and annoying. Guys think twice going before to Biryani house.

To the + blogger posts. For the bloggers who think we expect the world for $9.50, you're right - it's because we do that we do not think biryani house is worth a 2nd visit. they could try balancing the overwhelming amount of cardamon in my biryani for a start. there are plenty of great indian restaurants in a 2km vicinity that serve up a genuine great meal for the same price. start searching and you'll be well rewarded.

Biryani...? u must be kidding me. Attempted to have biryani... having told a spicy one still I ended up getting a biryani which was bland than a normal flavoured rice... Stopped having after the 1st spoon... Everyone are finishing it cos they have to pay for it... Huuuuhhh

Being a hyderabadi I would advice all our biryani lovers plzzzzzzzzzzz DON'T even think about it..... as it doesn;t even match up 50% of taste... Certainly not expecting 100% but atleast, damn!!!

The food here is fantastic. I love how the chicken or meat is always fresh and tender. Maybe they have a policy of always using fresh produce?
I live in Kilmore, but this is the only place I go to - I've been going here for two years. I come here every time I'm in Melbourne, but sometimes plan my trips around just having lunch here.
I admit that the decor is a little dated and at times it gets crowded, but to me that's a very minor price to pay for the best Indian I've ever had.
I travel a lot and during my travels I'm always comparing other Indian restaurants to Biryani House. Red Pepper in the CBD comes a close second. No others come close at all.
The staff at Biryani House are friendly and I've never had a problem with them. I think complaints about service are from pompous types who are used to waiters fawning all over them.

The staff need customer service training. I don't know why this place gets so much buzz..the food is absolutely miserable..there is nothing special that you can not get at any other mediocre Indian place..its a tiny little restaurant with no basic facilities such as water!!!! the food is way too spicy and hot!! the food from the pictures at wall differs in reality. Most importantly one of the worst customer service I have experienced..I took my colleagues there for lunch and we decided not to visit this place anymore!! We as customers could accept the bad quality food but there is no way I can stand arrogant staff.

Nothing to write home about. I had a takeaway lamb biryani from biryani house. The portion was big enough for 2 people (unless you're starving). Although it was quite fragrant, it lacked the spicy flavour you'd expect from biryani.

The food was alright, but the customer service by a lady at the counter was terrible and to make things worse, she overcharged us and did not want to give a receipt showing individual prices
Am def not going there again.

Best Biryani in Melbourne.... Well...I am an Indian and I love my cuisine whether its north or south.I have tried Biryani almost every where ...cafe student-Clayton, namaskar-Lygon, Aussie indian -Collingwood, hyderabad inn-Footscray, Dawat-richmond, dosa hut-Footscray and obviously other india restaurants...and in my opinion Biryani house is the best amongst all renowned restaurants for Hydrabadi biryani...their chicken biryani and haryali kebab tikka is to die for...and those who are complaining about service...are you freaking kiddin me...service is quick and awesome...ambience is a little let down which I can understand but you can't expect Vue De Monde service and ambience for under $10 dish...I seriously enjoy Biryani houseĀ°s biryani like I do back in hyderabad, India at bawarchi, paradise, hyderabad house, y2k, niagara hotel etc etc...so guys please don't say crap unnecessarily and ruin it for others who review the restaurants before going there. Also for good north Indian food try curry vault in city and Aangan which I am sure you already know...

Used to like it but the last time I went there the biryani wasn't great and it was sooooo salty! Haven't been back since
Mr.and.mrs.awks
The staff are always very welcoming and friendly. I am unable to eat really chilly curries and they are always making the food fresh to specific orders. The naan bread is a winner and the butter chicken is melt in your mouth!!! I'd rate it as the best Indian restaurant in the CBD!
