5 Lire was another great brunch option in Melbourne. I had their ricotta hotcakes which were slathered with Nutella parfait and topped with fairy floss - it was sinfully delicious! The baked egg, came with Turkish bread, was pretty good also with its crunchy and creamy textures. Coffee was decent. Service was friendly. The cafe was wooden-themed, old-looking but was pretty quiet and cozy.
I have lived in North Melbourne for a few years and this is undoubtedly the best cafe in the neighbourhood. The menu is phenomenal, and I have never had a dish I haven't been very happy with. Service is always prompt, and the prices are reasonable.
I came here for pancakes and ended up with soup! Always magnetised by the dish I've never had before, this clear but flavoursome broth warmed the body and soul on a cold winter day. Made with chicken, it came with two rolled up crispelle (crepes) lined with melted Pecorino cheese, some greens and a slice of crispy chicken skin that's worth savouring.
The Italian hot chocolate was heavenly. Rich but not overwhelming, the steaming thick liquid was a meal in itself and satisfied the craving for something sweet.
Friendly staff and speedy service meant there was hardly any waiting. They've done well to fit in as many seats as there are in the limited real estate available. It's cosy and possibly not so comfortable for a long brunch, but good enough for a quick bite between errands.
This is our local cafe and has become a favourite since we moved into the area last month.
Simple and unassuming cafe, friendly staff, great coffee and delicious food.
Weekends get busy but mid week you can usually find a spot at one of the share tables.

Came here on a weekday morning. Coffee was really tasty! I had the crumpets and my partner had the avo. Both were tasty and filling dishes. Friendly and prompt service. The menu was limited but the trip for the coffee alone is worthwhile.
Our first time at 5 Lire. I had the eggs Benedict. Very nice. Loved the pulled pork and there was plenty of it. Very refreshing with the apple. Coffee was very nice. Service was quick and always with a smile. We will definitely be back
Dragged the husband with me to North Melbourne today for my chiro appointment and had the pleasure of brunching there after so long. There were a lot of new cafes since we moved out of West Melbourne few years ago. 5 Lire is amongst the few cafes along Errol Street cafe area. I had the Caffe Shakerato and it was very refreshing and strong. Crumpets with almond butter and peanut butter for lunch as I wasn't too hungry. Almond butter tasted alright on its own but it actually works really well with peanut butter. C ordered the pulled pork benedict. It's not as heavy as the other ones as they replaced bread with fritter. Still a massive portion though! Not a lot of savoury option on the menu as the other cafés but do feel free to build your own.
The ricotta hotcakes here are simply to die for! Almost too pretty to eat, the fluffy buttermilk hotcakes are topped with a mound of Nutella and Persian fairyfloss with a sprinkle of cacao and orange crumble -- could anything improve this vision of perfection? Perhaps only the oh-so-Melbourne sight of a lady sitting across from her pug at the table next to us! 5 Lire is a classic Melbourne cafe with a creative all day menu made from quality ingredients.
Cute small cafe with plenty on the menu and to offer the cabinet. Large daily specials wall. Outdoor seating available.
The zucchini fritters $3.80 each, were delicious, moist and crisp.
Arancini, $3.80, had a great flavour.
Sausage roll, $3.80, was well made.
Raw Nutella slice, $6, was a mix of nuts and coconut, flavour was ok but could have been stronger in Nutella flavour and not with the price.
Have been here twice and ordered the same thing，just because I like beetroot. Smoked salmon was cut wired，most of which was belly. I deeply believe that it is homemade or at least home-cut. Nice and friendly staff.
The pancakes at this place are insane and even though they look a bit to rich they are actually so enjoyable to eat! I didnt find they were overly sweet and had the right balance of each flavour! It’s the perfect comfort meal and it’s something different! I love the entire menu I will definitely be back to try more! The only thing is it is very small so if you go at peak time you won’t get a table but overall awesome!
The staff here is friendly. Great variety of pastries and small bites. The place is small but cosy and has good ambience. Packed with people. Great for families and friends.
This unassuming cafe is easy to miss if you're driving along Errol street especially if you're coming from CBD. I came for afternoon tea and ordered the chai latte and house made banana dates bread. The chai latte doesn't look appealing when it was served to my table but the taste was packed with spices! It was so good!! The toasted banana dates bread was tasty and not too sweet and nice to find hazelnuts in it. Will definitely return to 5 Lire.

Started off with cold press OJ and turmeric latte. That's right! Turmeric! It was more of a chai latte than a coffee but tasted very pleasant and the turmeric wasn't overpowering. Definitely recommend :) The cold press OJ would be quenching if there was ice added to it.
We ordered the French toast and the baked eggs. Both dishes very delicious!
The baked eggs was fulfilling and the you get different flavours and textures that work really well together. Definitely recommended this dish! The bread that came with it was nice but probably not the right bread for this dish? It crumbs everywhere. Maybe change it to those soldier toasts to make it easier to eat?
The French toast was beautifully presented and we wanted more of it! It wasn't too sweet, it was just right with the cream and the toast itself.
Definitely will return!

Went here for a client meeting on Monday. Had a turmeric latte, the fruit toast and a piccolo. Food and coffees were good. I would've loved to just get one slice of the fruit toast, two was a bit full on (flavour wise). Loved the Four Pillars Gin Marmelade. Coffees were good. It's a lovely cafe. Service was friendly.
Nutella hot cakes were amazing recommend sharing with someone due to its sweetness, baked eggs are great but could have used something to add texture like rice. Coffee was on point!
One of the best cafe for me to have a breakfast or lunch especially if i want to have my cheat meal it's worth having it there, tried a variety of different dishes and it was all delicious.

5 Lire burst onto the breakfast scene with its stunningly presented Nutella hotcakes, the prettiest rendition of a ricotta pancake since the floral topped version flying out of the kitchen at Top Paddock. Years later they are still both permanent fixtures on the menu due to their Instagram popularity. You can't really come here and not try what they are famous for and believe me it's delicious. The rest of the menu is actually pretty delectable too differentiated from your standard eggs and toast they offer up a version of a breakfast espresso martini, a house made panettone cake and plenty of really healthy options too. There's even a paleo plate, if you are strong willed enough (or arguably silly enough) to pass on the chocolate fairy floss topped Nutella hotcake joy
Cute little cafe in North Melbourne - have been there multiple times. Great coffee, friendly staff and excellent food. Try the Avocado Smash - their homemade cornbread is just fantastic! I will be back soon to try some of the yummy lunch dishes along with a refreshing Aperol Spritz ;)

Baked eggs 🍳🍅 - Portion is huge but tastes average. 2 breads aren't enough tbh (but you can refill the bread so this isn't an issue). This dish is best eaten with bread imo, if not it will be too acidic to consume due to the strong tomato paste.
Beetroot bun burger 🍔 - The burger buns taste real and healthy (maybe because beetroot is used? haha 😜😜) This dish may look small but it is filling. The patty is juicy and compact (no cutting corners). 👍👍
The flat white and calmer chai latte were good as well. ☕☕ (sorry I'm not a coffee snob so can't comment much on drinks. haha)
Service is great and the vibe is relaxing and laid back. Good place to chill and hang out with friends.

Went here for the hot cakes. The hot cakes on their own were nothing special but the dish was great overall with all of the ingredients (Fairy Floss, etc) and flavours working well together. Too large of a dish in my opinion though, it felt like there was half a container of Nutella in it. I recommend the dish is shared between 2 people. A definite sugar overload and once per year dish!
Popped down for brunch with my partner last week and it didn't leave disappointed.

One of the best hot cakes I've tried so far! I like how the dish wasn't too sweet! There were a lot of nice elements and textures in it which I thoroughly enjoyed! The staff were extremely nice! I would definitively be coming back to try some of the savoury dishes! :)

Very good food and coffee. We ordered the ricotta hotcake, very impressive! I'm a big fan of hazelnut and this hotcake just nailed it! You can taste different texture of hazelnut and the level of sweetness just perfect. The only problem was we were sitting outside and the wind blow the fairy floss away :)
The mesh with mushroom also very tasty. Rich truffle flavour and the mesh blended very well with the mushrooms. But when it got cold, taste a little bit greasy.
Stuffed date wrapped with prosciutto is amazing! Very interesting combination for me. Is sweet but savoury. The sweetness brings out the flavour of prosciutto but not too sweet also not too salty.
Will definitely go back!
Love this place. I am a local and I always buy my coffee here, have it in or takeaway. Breakfast is yummy and good for the health conscious.
Warm, cosy spot with friendly and accomodsting staff, so many positives here. Treated myself to the ricotta hotcakes which are an impressive composition. Delicious and definitely for the sweet tooth, I could only get through about half but my dining companions gladly assisted with the task. Will gladly come back to try more of the menu.
Came here and ordered the signature Nutella ricotta hotcake and I can obviously see why it's such a popular dish! Not only does it look delicious, it tastes amazing as well! The portion was quite big for an average person but I guess I'm not so average (lol). Got a compliment from a staff for finishing the whole thing 😂

Stumbled across 5 Lire whilst driving through North Melbourne looking for a coffee. We ended up having lunch as the food looked so good. The food and atmosphere were great and to top it off the service was 10/10. ( The orange flavoured water top-ups went down a treat :))

Accidentally stumbled across this cute little cafe and popped in to get a coffee and a snack. Well what I got was completely blown away. The coffee was the best I've had. The ham and cheese croissant was out of this world amazing - completely in a league of its own and as for the almond croissant - put it this way - I would drive from literally anywhere to get it again. Service was great - friendly and super fast. I haven't stopped thinking about this place since I went and cannot wait to go back.

Loved the led lights coming through the ceiling that made it a stand out feature for me.. A little small in space but we didn't have to wait too long for a seat.. Hands down the best coffee I have had!! Amazing friendly service and that goes for the food too. I had the baked eggs and they were faultless, perfect amount of gruyere, chorizo and pangrattato= DELISH!

This is the first time I have visited 5 Lire but it was only for coffee and cake so I can only base my review on the coffee. Lovely little cafe tucked away in North Melbourne, staff were very friendly, even overhearing them speak to regular customers that visit was a delight. Coffee was perfect with its strong and bold flavours. Will definitely return as the Ricotta Hotcakes look divine!

因为在群微信群里看到有人在发这里的一道甜食，于是【慕图而来】。
热香饼上加入雪糕并大方地铺上棉花糖，卖相非常吸引。可是呢，这个热香饼是微波炉加热的感觉因为表面不热里面却热到冒烟，翻过来发现底部煎过头了。而后我也发现其实这道甜食吃下去非常干，不是很好咽下去的口感。
另外我也点了deconstructed tiramisu，我一直对结构系列的甜食很感兴趣。这道菜创意是很好但他不说我倒不觉得『哪里来的提拉米苏？』而且淋在mascarpone芝士上的糖浆让我有点懵逼。
Because I saw this hot cake with fairy floss on the internet somewhere so I thought I must give it a try.
I suspected the hotcakes were reheated in the microwaved because it's warm on the outside but steaming hot in the middle. And as seen in the picture the hotcake was overcook. The floss was too dry to go with the hotcake, while I dipped some hazelnut sauce, it became gooey-sweet. But the mix-seeds were good crunch added to the bite. The sweetness - I felt like my partner broke up with me and I must be sad and angry to eat this. (dramatic) - I'm saying it's very comforting food.
And the deconstructed tiramisu was very creative and thoughtful. I just thought - JUST SAYING - wouldn't it be nice if the sweetness level being downgraded to half and let other tiramisu character join in.
And one of the best long mac I have had from many cafe. Creamy, dark, chocolatey, and aromatic throughout the taste.
Although busy, service was efficient and friendly. Thank you for that girls!

5 Lire is officially my fav cafe out of all cafes that I've ever been to. The food is so addicting that it makes me want to go back every week. The mocha coffee has hints of chocolate that remained in my tongue aft having a sip of it, which is delicious. The baked egg is so on point because the flavour of the tomato-based sauce is so rich. The Italian style croque monsieur is also scrumptious, the flavour was so balanced. There was sweetness and saltiness in it. The ricotta hotcake is so magical; the fluffy cotton candy is sweet, the hotcakes are soft & chewy and they're also generous with nutella. And the passionfruit donut with glazed icing & dried coconut on top was also delicious, the vanilla filling is 10/10.
First time here, had the paleo plate and was very impressed! The waitress promised us a table in 15 minutes and we got that table without waiting any longer. The place is very instagramesque and cosy, food was amazing! Felt so full after eating the paleo plate, it was loaded with nutrition and the flavours were great. Definitely coming back here, heard the ricotta hot cakes are their specialty ;)
Came here for the famous Ricotta Hotcakes and was not disappointed. This dish is a treat for the eyes and the tastebuds; I could go on but this review page seems to be about little else! Wife took the Paleo Plate because she loves avocado and salmon, which were the highlights of the dish. The nut bread was a little too acidic but by no means bad and I'm sure more stringent adherents to the paleo culture would find it to their liking. All in all a good morning after night shift and we'll definitely be back.

It's cutesy, cozy, demeanor disguises a very experimental Hestonish menu, which will just warp any preconceived brunch experiences you've ever had.
The Ricotta Hotcakes, which are topped with Chocolate Cacao, Orange Crumble and Chocolate Persian Fairy Floss, are coupled with a side serve of Nuttella, laced with various scattered Nuts, Seeds and bits.
If you like your sweets, this is the love you've been looking for and your new life priority.
Coffee and Baked Eggs were also very highly rated, served with impeccable hospitality.
The Deconstructed Tiramisu Waffles are next in my grand scheme of things, sweet brunch related. They just sound so tripped out!

Ricotta Hotcakes...the fairy floss reminded me of a bad toupee but I really liked it as it wasn’t overly sweet. The hotcakes themselves were average but the Nutella, the crumble and the fairy floss brought this dish up to the next level, making it overall enjoyable.
Literally have nothing bad to say about this place, the ricotta hot cakes were on another level of amazing (although I do suggest you have them on an empty stomach), staff were friendly, the place was clean & tidy and we didn't have to wait long at all, highly recommended! 😁
Came here for brunch today and was feeling something healthy. Ordered their super grain salad, I was a little hesitant that with all the ingredients it'll be too crunchy for my jaw, lol, but ended up to be perfect and the side of bacon was on point!!!! The orange, Apple and carrot juice was $6 and small, which I thought was a bit steep.. But it was tasty.
My friend ordered the ricotta hot cakes, which came out with a massive mound of fairy floss... Which looked extremely indulgent, though she didn't finish it, she enjoyed it.
Will def be back for more!! Might skip the juice ...
Tiramisu waffles were amazing! Highly recommended - fluffy waffle with smooth and creamy marscapone, coffee jelly and crunchy biscuit pieces! Definitely worth coming back for that dish! Staff were lovely, coffee delicious and service was prompt. Only thing I'd suggest would be more variety on the menu as options were quite limited.
Nice place, good crowd and service with a smile. Cappuccino was a bit flat. The presentation of the Ricotta hot cake was spectacular as well as the Italian Croque Monsieur. The only negative (to be fair it was clearly listed in the menu) was the use of brioche which gave the CM a very sweet taste that didn't quite balance with the melted cheese. It is a lovely and lively place, will definitively come back for more!

Took a ham and cheese croissant home for my partner and he said it was amazing - great ham and spectacular cheese! Can't recommend this place enough!

The number one place to visit in north Melbourne! Its easily the best coffee with out the price to prove it. Cute little cafe delivers for a big appetite. Absolutely love it I just keep coming back.
Absolutely love this place - one of the best brunches in Melbourne. Can't go past their avocado smash and their breakfast board. Coffee top quality too. Staff are incredibly friendly. The only complaint I have is that it is too small for it's relative popularity. A must visit!
Very nice coffee and their selection of daily salads go perfectly with a couple of their silky and cheesy on the inside, wonderfully crispy on the outside arancini balls! the regular menu also looks rather tempting, something for the sweet tooth or the savory craving. I will be back again!
So this has become one of our favorite stops on my way to work in the morning! Leon's coffee is probably up there with the best, and whether it's a croissant, or avo on toast somehow it just tastes so good here👍🏻 great feel and always the best music that makes me feel good😊
I came here with a girlfriend with the main intention of getting the Nutella hotcakes (which we shared) and it definitely did not disappoint. The fairy floss was the right amount of Nutella and the hotcakes were soft and fluffy. For my main, I had their Baked Eggs (which was my first time trying it) and it wasn't as bad as I had expected. The sauce was very rich so it was quite overwhelming sometimes but overall okay.
This cafe fills my heart with joy! The staff are excellent, the coffee is spot on and the food sublime. Just be warned, the servings are HUUUUGE. I keep in trying to order other things, but I just can't get past the baked eggs. How the heck they get the chorizo so tender I have no idea

How have I not found you before! I've driven past this place so many times for lunch on Errol St, & never noticed it. I have finally tried their famous ricotta hotcakes, and it was divine. So fluffy, not overly sweet with the Nutella and semifreddo. Topped with the Persian floss, it's a beautiful dish to look at.
Also shared the baked eggs and the addition of the pesto brought it home for me. Eggs nice and runny, and sauce with chorizo and chickpeas very nicely flavoured. Best version of eggs in purgatory I've tasted in a while, though I could do with a little less oil next time.
Cool little place. They've done so much with the space they have. Love it! Had the Nutella hotcakes which I assume is their signature dish. It was delish, only there was one ingredient in the mix I didn't enjoy but couldn't pick it out. Overall an enjoyable experience

This is a very nice little spot indeed! Really nice coffee and I ordered the breakfast board special; which was really yummy! The food is tasty and fresh, and they also have some very delicious looking sweets on the counter. The staff are nice and friendly. They had Italian music playing to suit the Italian name of the cafe, it was a bit loud and not my thing, but that's only a minor fault and doesn't deter me at all!

Sweet tooth's please try the ricotta hotcakes. You will not be disappointed. The ricotta hotcakes on its own is amazing let alone with the toppings! add the ice-cream, the Nutella, the toppings its just so damn good. It tastes as good as it looks believe me. If you're not much of a sweet tooth everything else on the menu is still really delicious. I would still recommend getting the ricotta hotcakes as a side dish because you just have to try it! (but thats just me). Also important to note that the coffee is really good. on the weekends theres a bit of a wait for a table but its worth the wait. Also staff are really friendly!
Visited on a Wednesday for lunch to try their famous ricotta hotcakes, however the stand out for us were the baked eggs! I love baked eggs and every time there is baked eggs on the menu I will get it, and 5 lire have managed to make it to number 1! Juicy, not watery and not too salty either! And the bread that was supplied was absolutely perfect with both dishes we had. Unfortunately the ricotta pancakes (on their own) was a bit bland and we weren't really able to taste much of the fairy floss. However the ice cream and hazelnuts was what made the dish really shine.
Heading outside our local stomping ground, we found ourselves in North Melbourne on a quiet Saturday morning and in need of a good brekky. Instagram has been flooded recently with amazing photos of breakfasts in Melbourne and on the top of our most recent list was 5 Lire (pronounced Cinque Lire). One look at their amazing Hot Cakes and we were sold!
The food is amazing and the place looks lovely but the service is not satisfying. How hard it is for someone to give your customer a smile? A smile on your waitress will really help making your customer come back the next time

5 Lire is my main local coffee destination for a reason. The coffee is delicious the staff is kind and the food is incredible. If you are in the North Melbourne area I definitely recommend you stop by and have either their baked eggs or famous Nutella hotcakes!

So after seeing the popular Buttermilk Ricotta hotcakes going around instagram it was only a matter of time til i got around to ticking it off the list. 5 Lire a cute little cafe in North Melbourne behind the masterpiece. Came here on a busy sunday and was seated straight away though I think we got lucky as there aren't the most tables, the hotcakes were pretty damm good a good combination for the sweet tooth lover
I sometimes just pop in for a nice coffee, but when I come to eat, I can't seem to pass up on the smashed avocado! It's been my choice on a few occasions now...with chilly shavings and a roasted lemon - it's just delish!
Gets super busy for Sunday brunch. After saying it'd be a 20minute wait, 45 minutes later we got a seat. Was with 2 friends, and a friend's son who's in a wheelchair. Was very squashy and a bit difficult and disruptive to other patrons when we were seated and when we had to leave. However, customers and waitresses were more than accomdating and for that I thank you. Ricotta nutella pancakes with persian fairy floss was the bomb! Thank god we split it between 3. I noticed a fellow diner next to me ordered it for herself and couldn't finish it. Prices are expected for the area. Would like to come back when it's less busy.
A very comfy place with friendly staffs and super nice food. I just tried the nutella hotcakes and some italian loafs with 'nduja, cheese, and fried eggs (if I'm not mistaken). Both dishes were really nice. The sweetness of the hotcake was perfect and I really like the fairy floss on top of it. The loaf was rich and savoury, however I feel the portion was too small for one person. Overall, I had a good brunchie experience here..
So like everyone else I went here based on seeing the ricotta hot cakes all over Instagram. I didn't even look at the menu, I just knew I wanted those hot cakes! And my god were they delicious! So light and fluffy with that gooey Nutella. I would recommend to everyone! I couldn't finish them though, got a bit much halfway through. Breakfast on a Saturday, it was extremely busy and we had to wait for a table.

After being bombarded with instagram photos of 5 Lire's delicious menu offerings I decided to see what all the hype was about. I ordered the apple crumble waffles and was not disappointed. Whilst the dish didnt exactly look pretty as a picture the combination of the airy waffle with the oat crumble, stewed apples and creme anglaise was perfect. Surprisingly the dish wasnt too sickly sweet nor was it overly dense. Would highly recommend this cafe.
When at Cinque Lire, Nutella hotcakes is a must! Also ordered the Italian pork sausage with braised lentils & kale and even though it did not look good, it certainly delivered in taste.
The waitress saw me scraping the Nutella off my plate and asked if I would like more. Little gestures like that go a long way.
Excellent ricotta hotcakes! So delicious it had Nutella and Persian fairy floss, and wasn't too sweet. Quite a large serve, had to share it!
I came here for pancakes and ended up with soup! Always magnetised by the dish I've never had before, this clear but flavoursome broth warmed the body and soul on a cold winter day. Made with chicken, it came with two rolled up crispelle (crepes) lined with melted Pecorino cheese, some greens and a slice of crispy chicken skin that's worth savouring.
The Italian hot chocolate was heavenly. Rich but not overwhelming, the steaming thick liquid was a meal in itself and satisfied the craving for something sweet.
Friendly staff and speedy service meant there was hardly any waiting. They've done well to fit in as many seats as there are in the limited real estate available. It's cosy and possibly not so comfortable for a long brunch, but good enough for a quick bite between errands.

A very generous serving of the ricotta hot cakes, it took me a while to finish them. The Nutella parfait was very smooth in consistency.
Like the coffee. Sometimes foods are hit and miss. But I would still go back for the who experience. Nice ambience.
