Shanghai Street on Bourke serves delicious Shanghai dumplings. I love to visit this place as seating is very comfortable but the customer service is a bit lacking.
šLOCATIONš
Shanghai Street on Bourke is a little hidden from the main street as it is located on first level of corner building on corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Street. It is only 2 minutesā walk from H&M.
Take the escalators up to first floor and the restaurant is immediately on the left hand side.
My friends and I like to visit this franchise as it is much more spacious and comfortable to dine in compared to the other smaller premises around Chinatown vicinity.
šSERVICEš
It was very quiet afternoon yet the service was extremely slow. Previously when we visited service was always the same, very slow and also somewhat relaxed.
We asked for forks because my Aussie friend donāt know how to use chopsticks, and it took forever to arrive. In the end I had to get up and go to the counter and ask.
There just doesnāt seem to be any proper customer service. Training really needs to be improved for the waiters.
šMENU/PRICEš
2 x Xiao Long Bao, $13.80 each
(8 per serve)
Pan Fried Mini Pork Buns (6), $18.00
Vegetarian boiled dumplings (12), $12.80
šVERDICTš
The Xiao Long Bao is so fresh and tasty and has a lot of soup liquid inside. The Pan fried mini pork Buns cooked very well and also quite tasty. Iām not really into vegetarian dumplings but one of my friends is a Vegetarian so she ordered it for herself but I did try one of them and surprisingly it was quite good. Overall, the food here is always good quality but the customer service is lacking.
One of my biggest weaknesses is xiao long bao and this place does some of the best dumplings Iāve tried in Melbourne! I always get the pork xiao long bao, the fried noodles and sometimes the dumplings
Cheap, quick and delicious
Came here to dine as a group of three after hearing great things about this place from some friends. Quite a bit fancier than its famous namesake, the Shanghai Street restaurant on Bourke Street is spacious, not overly crowded (no line!) and has a great range of dishes. Starting with their famous xiao long bao, they have smaller dishes, mains and dishes typical of a restaurant that can host a Chinese banquet.
We had the pork xiao long bao (two baskets of them might I add), noodle soup, vermicelli crab, flaming duck and pickled vegetables this day and were pretty impressed by the quality of the dishes. The vermicelli crab had good flavour, but the crab they used didnāt have much meat on the inside which was a bit disappointing... a lot of work and not much reward. The flaming duck would have to have been the most impressive dish; the flavours were different, especially to your typical Pecking duck, cooked perfectly and had a great juicy texture. Of course, their classic pork xiao long bao did not disappoint either.
Service was attentive, staff were friendly, and the venue has a casual yet nice atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out; especially if you are after good Shanghainese cuisine in a setting that does not require you to wait for two hours to sit in a cramped space jammed full with tables and chairs.
Located on the 1st floor on 360 Bourke Street and the venue is alot more spacious and classy. We had a quick dinner here and we enjoyed it. We had the fish noodles and dumplings and it was very nice. They do have quite a good range on their menu and are more focused around dishes to share.

Food is okay. But remember, its very oily. Usually this place is crowded. Staff is not that friendly. Recommended for the food but the customer service is a big no no.
Very delicious dishes. Giving 5 star as we had booked and confirmed for 10. But, we were told none available at last minute. So our group was split into 2. No apologies or anything, take it or leave it attitude. For a top restaurant you expect that much atleast. Double check your reservation before you go.
Larger and more spacious than its counterparts with the same name scattered over the CBD, Shanghai Street will ensure you can comfortable and tasty experience.
This has become one of our favourite places to dine, and a great spot to bring friends.
With the menu being slightly different than the smaller stores and prices being a smidge higher, it's really a small price to pay for what this place has to offer.
We have been around 6 times now over the past few months. The pork Xiao Long Bao and the crab and pork XLB are to die for! The spinach sandwiched by corn crackers is an interesting yet satisfying dish to try; so many textures! Boiled chicken is a good choice if you want something extra to fill you up. To be honest, you don't need rice when all the dishes taste this great.
Came here not realising it is not their typical dumpling joint. This branch is more of your Chinese restaurant that serves main dishes, banquette sharing style. We ordered the pork belly with preserved vegetables and the crispy duck dish. Both were delicious.
One of my favourite dumplings place in the city & the fancier version of Shanghai st on lt bourke! Have tried most things on the menu and it never disappoints. My favourite is pork xiao long bao. Definitely recommended to try.
The fancier version of Shanghai Street on Little Bourke! The venue is more spacious, clean and comfortable, and the service is much better - would be better for special occasions too.
Thankfully, the XLB are priced the same as the one in Chinatown. Taste-wise, itās as good as all their other joints - thin skin, juicy filling. Their fried mini buns are also heavenly and I can never go without ordering them!
Will definitely come back to try more on the menu.
An upgraded Shanghai Street branch.
Located on the 2nd floor of the building, the place is clean, spacious with floor to ceiling windows which was nice. It was just different from the small branch on little bourke. The service was really professional here, staffs were well presented, and were friendly, english was not a problem. They even offered to out the napkin on your lap, and paying on the table is possible.Ā
I enjoy their xiao long baos. Had both their signature pork and (crab and pork) and both were yummy, though the crab could be tad fishy. They tasted just right, not to much MSG, nice amount of soup, and the skin was just nice and thin (Eat it while its hot though). Their vegetarian stir fried noodle were pretty good as well, not too oily, with shrooms and green vegs, and the noodle texture was on point, as well was the plain noodle soup, though this one was on the thinner side, I really like the taste of the noodle and soup, simple but yum, went along really well with mains.
For mains we had the sweet and sour prawn, it was pretty good, though can less dry. The fish in chili garlic sauce was pretty good, i especially loved the soba noodles on the side as they add such nice texture and balanced out the really flavourful sauce, however the fish wasn't the freshest, so that's one thing. Had their pecking duck as well and it was pretty generous and nicely wrapped already, tasted pretty good too, though the duck skin wasn't crispy and the skin wasn't "the best", still very much enjoyable, great balance between all the components.
I also love their stir fried rice cake, it was not dry or oily, but has a gooey sauce thats made them moist. The cakes were chewy and soft and the pork and spinach were yum, though can probably be more generous.
Overall a great place to go for your chinese food craving with a nice setting.

Luxurious setting compared to a lot of dumplings restaurants in Melbourne I've been to and best thing was not having to queue up. The Ā steamed pork dumplings, xiao long bao AKA XLB (steamed soup dumplings), shanghai stir fried noodles with pork were really delicious compared with the smaller branches of shanghai street! The flavours of our wontons with spicy peanut sauce could have been improved with a bit more vinegar and spicy peanut butter sauce. We ended our meal in the end with Ā cocktails/mocktails and steamed custard buns, which were wonderfully soft and fluffy.
Shanghai street as a brand always does really authentic shanghai food, specially dumplings they are and can be said as the masters of.dunplings in melbourne, very rarely you will find another dunpling shop thay does better dumplings
This restaurant offers the best Shanghai Cuisine in Melbourne. Group of us went for a special occasion. The services was good and prompt. The food were so delicious. Canāt wait to go back again.
Snuck in for lunch with the kids during school holidays! A lot more spacious than its Little Bourke St counterparts, the surrounds are quite fancy!
The menu seems to be the same (though Iāve not been to the others for a while), the food is great, service quick and service efficient!
We loved the juicy buns, xiao long bao and the kidsā favourite,, pan fried dumplings. We also had the duck pancakes as a treat. All up just over $50 without drinks...
Iād happily bring others here for a quick, tasty, filling dunking fix!
This is my to go place when I crave for dumplings.
The xiao long bao is the best.
The sweet and sour soup is my fave.
Place is small but always packed
Favourite place to come to on a lunch break! Fast service and great quality food thatās surprisingly inexpensive. Will come back time and time again
This place has been one of my favourite Chinese restaurants ever since I first came here especially for their scrumptious Xiaolongbao. Canāt get enough of these! It has been my ritual to order these every time I visit Shanghai Street along with some fried green beans with mince.
Fried green beans with mince is my another all time favourite when having a Chinese meal. Goes really well with some fried rice and dumplings. Shanghai Street does these really well but itās a bit on the hotter side with some chillies in it, which is my preference as well!
Also try their braised pork belly with amazing soft bao buns.
Shanghai Street On Bourke is a more formal dining experience of Shanghai Street Dumplings.. this place is new and seating adequate.. the dumplings was still pretty good, and the dishes served up was delicious too.. they had a few dishes that were pretty unique.. a good place for group dinners/lunches with families..
Met all expectations:
Xiao Long Bao: amazing, almost perfect
Braised Pork Belly with steamed bread: great surprise
Veggies are a bit pricey for the amount
Will come back again!
Great service and staff were friendly, attentive And fast. There are so many dishes to choose from. I really enjoyed their dumplings, squid and egg custard bun! I would recommend this place for those who want quality Chinese food. I'll be coming back!
I've been here several times and the friendly waiters always deliver. The service here is impeccable, they are very attentive and helpful. The restaurant is quite new so it is extremely modern and clean for a Chinese restaurant.
The quality of the food here is top notch. The brown crab dish is among the best dishes I've ever had at any restaurant in Melbourne. You can get your traditional Chinese dishes here but they're justĀ more refined than your average Chinese restaurant.
Food - 5/5
Service - 5/5
4.5
As a regular of three of their other five restaurants over the years at various times (which venue would depend on situation, group size and hunger), I was eagerly anticipating the newest and more upmarket dumpling house from this group. It was amazing! Itās close to Bourke Street Mall and up a long escalator. The layout is flashier with bright white tablecloths and smiles on the staff. And itās not that much more expensive yet thereās much more choice menu wise. We had the pork XLB and fried chicken and prawn and neither disappointed. Our calamari was lightly dusted and a very decent portion size. The waitress looking after us was sweet and cheery (which is a nice change!) Will definitely be back.
When it comes to Chinese food, Melbourne thumps on Sydney.
3 words. Amazing Chinese Food. There's the expensive Shanghai street and the cheap Shanghai street. I've dined at the expensive one as they had no line and it wasn't as crowded. I had Shanghai Xiaolongbao, Fried pork mini bun, Peking duck pancake and Shanghai style sweet & sour pork ribs with rice cake which for some odd reason is not on the online menu. In terms of the flavour, everything was just spot on and cooked so damn well. Highly recommend the Shanghai style sweet & sour pork ribs with rice cake. It's sweet & sour as expected and had this awesome smoky flavour that I didn't expect. It was a happy fire cracker experience. I give this place 5 bears.
For quite some time, I have been meaning to check out Shanghai Street. I decided to come here for a weekend lunch and was not disappointed.
This outlet on Bourke Street is a lot more upmarket compared to their other locations, and I was taken away by now upscale it looked. The venue is spacious, with lots of large tables making it ideal for groups.
Everything we ordered was delicious. We had the pork and prawn wonton in chilli oil with peanut & sesame sauce and crispy tofu, pork xiao long bao, peking duck and tea to share.
The restaurant has a lovely ambiance and excellent service. Overall I would rate Shanghai Street 4.5 āļø out of 5.
Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.

The food taste light and surprisingly refreshing. Add vinegar and it brings up more favour and subtle aroma. Avoid adding soy source because its too heavy to the delicate balance of favour.
Updated.
Trying this for the first time. Great atmosphere and service. There is a staff opening the door to the toilet. Awesome.
Ordered 3 dishes - XLB, Peking duck and fish made noodles. See photos. All food tasted good. The noodles were made out of fish - springy and covered with crab roe broth.
Recommend you try this place. Slightly more expansive than their other joints due to the fine tableware service.
Came here second time and ordered more food. The fried oyster with wasabi is delicious. Orange duck is ok, it is stuffed with glutenous rice and chestnuts. The fried cod with mushrooms is yummy. Chili beans promfet fish is ok. Lastly the XLB today is much better than the first time we tried this. The skin is thinner. Overall a great lunch that cost $150 for four people. Not bad. Service is great too.
I believe i have ate in every dumpling place in melbourne. But this brand always gave me the best experience from the steamed to boiled to their pan fried dumpling all are simply the best so far. Highly recommended
9/10 ... The "Posh Spice" ... sorry I meant the "posh" Shanghai Street.Ā
Great to see that the "empire" of Shanghai Street has grown with the addition of their newest venue, be it away from the traditional Chinese food epicenter in Chinatown. The restaurant is set up in more "fine dining" style, much more opulent than the other three restaurants; well-groomed uniform wait staff, white linen, finer crockery, etc. more importantly we can reserve a table - Hallelujah ... so you don't have to wait in queue, can be seated and dined in comfort ... so there is a Dumpling God after all ...
The best or surprising thing about this place are .... that they tasted more or less the same, and are not much difference in price, if any ... you'll get away with $15-25.00 if dining with a group plus $4.00 corkage/person for your BYO wines ... seems very reasonable and okay.
More to my liking ... definitely a "slower" pace (in a good sense), we are not being hurried to order, eat, pay and get out ... we can stagger our order ... fresh, hot dumplings ... more attentive and much better service from the well groomed floor staff.
Dumpling wise, more or less the same, I think the enjoyment comes from the ambiance that we don't expect from a "Shanghai Street" venues.
More variety on the a la carte front, and they are good and reasonably priced too.
Will come back soon for more dumplings in this "Posh Shanghai Street" surrounding. JT-11/08/2018.
PS. ZomatoĀ we need 1/2 rating ...
The service here was really good! So was the food! Itās a more upmarket and fancy version of the other shanghai street restaurants in Melbourne and I was impressed by how pristine the tablecloths were. Would happily eat here time and time again!
Started of from a small dumpling shop and now to a big and clean venue. Bonus on top of their delicious food and good service is that their wait staff speaks pretty good English therefore no worries of communication barrier.
Had their famous Xiao Long Bao : came out warm and delicious. Succulent filling and delicious juice.
Pan fried mini bun: yum yum. The filling is super hot thou.
Special of the day (pork bone soup with bamboo shoot, sliced bean curd sheets ): the soup has been boiled for hours. Gelatinous soup. On point seasoning.
Mango and seafood fried rice: good fried rice. Not too oily, good amount of wok heat.
Clean and spacious venue. Plenty of space for prams. Good efficient service.
Will definitely return.
Good selection of dumplings and portions for mains are quite reasonable. To begin we had the pork xiao long bao as well as the vegetable ones they were great! Delicious flavour and soft and light pastry. We then had the pork belly and spiced calamari. Both had good flavour and were well balanced however I wished the calamari was cut into smaller pieces as they were a little too big to eat. We also had the stir fried seasonal vegetables to accompany our mains. Overall nice food and good service.
My friend and I were catching up on a weekday night for dinner and felt like dumplings so decided to give this place a go. Service was quick and efficient and they topped off your water without being asked. These days small things like this in service goes a long way in my eyes.
Now to the food. Even though there was nothing g that really stood out everything we ordered tasted quite good. Definitely a place I would go again when I get my dumplings cravings š
For authentic dumplings, I normally picture a small crowded store with an auntie at the back hand making each dumpling. Much to our surprise, we were greeted with a contemporary atmosphere that's clean and inviting. Unlike the usual self service expectations, the service here was exceptional; we were given complimentary hot towels and attentive service not much different to a fine dining atmosphere.
The menu is broad and servings size good for sharing. Our food was quick to be served and each dish tasted freshly made. The price is a bit more than their counterpart branches but it's offset by their service and ambience. Food is of consistent quality and taste, especially their iconic xiao long bao with paper thin wrapping and juicy hot soup which tasted delicious paired with their special shallots chilli oil.
Before this becomes another rave joint you should try for a no queue fast service experience.
Been to the Chinatown joint quite a few times and decided to check this one out! Ordered the steamed chicken and prawn dumplings (always been my go to dish), prawn and truffle fried rice, flaming duck and the sweet and sour prawns~ the flaming duck was unfortunately quite dry which was disappointing, the prawns were okay but could be more flavoursome šŖ but the overall experience including service and ambience were impeccable š would go back!
New branch located Bourke street , dumpling is fresh and nice , the customer service is awesome , professional served customer , the food is quality and fresh . Cheers and price really reasonable and not forget dining environment is pretty good
Really enjoyed our meal. Service started off well, very attentive and informative when asked what the best combination of food we could order. But as the night went on, we were served by omeone different who was quick to take our plates when we hadn't finished and generally rushed us out of our table as other customers were coming in.
Best fried dumplings i have tried in melbourne. Delicious
Unlike the other Shanghai Street outlets there is no need to queue here. And instead of sticky tables, there are solid white tablecloths. Staff are excellent, friendly and helpful. The $4 corkage is great. The xiao long bao were juicy and the mushy broad bean spring rolls were very morish. The Shanghai duck was a bit salty for me, but that us more of a personal taste than a criticism. The cold spinach with crunchy bean curd was very flavorsome. Shall be back again very soon.
Not your typical Shanghai Street outlet. This one is a proper restaurant with really good service and excellent food. The fried dumpling, fried bun, vegetarian fried rice and noodles are my favourites and I don't normally eat vegetarian stuff. This place will give New Shanghai a run for their money.
It is a good place to get some authentic Chinese dumplings. Comparing with its sister store on little Burke street, food here is a bit more pricy but with more choices. This place has got plenty space so it is easy to get a table there which is the benefit to come to this place. Dishes are served pretty quickly even when there is quite a bit customerās.
The classier sibling of the various Shanghai Street Dumpling joints dotted all around the CBD - it has the best offerings on the menu from the other joints, plus a few more unique items like the fish noodles with crab.Ā I like how they try to dress things up a bit, like including tofu on the spicy wontons.Ā Eating in more elegant surroundings, and no queuing - worth paying the small premium.
Another fantastic restaurant by the Shanghai street group. They successfully addressed all the shortcoming of the original Shanghai street Dumpling store and made it a much better experience. Apart from the best (I can say that as I am from where XiaoLongBao was invented) XiaoLongBao in Melbourne (Arguably the best in Australia), they now provide very authentic Shanghainese dishes in a much nicer environment without the queue and oily tables. It is without a doubt one of the best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne without a premium price tag.
Try the crab tofu and pork ribs, it is exactly how it was done in Shanghai, without compromise. The XiaoLongBao here is 2 dollars more than the original store, but with the ambiance and no queue I'm more than happy to eat it here.
Keep up the great work!
I have been enjoying Shanghai Street for years. When I heard they had opened a more upmarket version - huzah! let's go.A little less busier and more expensive than their other branches - but was it to worth it?Well if I wanted to to take a group or friends or my family for dumplings this would be it.The service is waaay better, less pressure on you to eat, and leave. Overall more mature better dressed clientele.
Is it for me? well the general ambiance for Shang Hai Street wasn't the same and the prices were roughly 20% more.I still prefer to go to the other branches, as it is cheaper and suits my style... but will take groups here.
Visited with friends one week, was so impressed returned a week later. You go up the escalator near the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth. Service was excellent on each visit. Corkage is a very reasonable $4 per person irrespective of how many bottles you bring. The XLBs are EXCELLENT, easily the best I've had in Australia. I loved them. Also love how they offer the pork and crab version. You won't find beef n black bean here, but there are plenty of options in the expansive menu - something to suit everyone. Flavours are punchy - e.g. the hot and sour soup is very spicy, the salt and pepper calamari is very salty. Such a great restaurant, highly recommended.

Love this place so much! Especially their wonton in peanut sauce! I can have it any day any time !
The staff was friendly too unlike some chinese restaurants
I've enjoyed dining at Shanghai Street for years so we made a dumpling pitstop at their new establishment. Unlike their other restaurants this was less hectic, less crowded and attracted more white collar customers than students. The price is also slightly higher but is justified with better service and a sleeker interior.
With Shanghai Street, dumplings are their strength and it'd be silly not to get them. Their XLB are one of the best in Melbourne, the piping hot broth is amazingly rich and skin thin. The fried pork mini bun is spongy and was bursting with pork juices. Inside is a tasty meatball, bottom however wasn't that crisp from the frying. The pork & prawn wontons with chilli oil and peanut/sesame sauce packed heat and nuttiness. It's one of their signature dishes and the inclusion of crispy tofu is an addition to what is served at their other restaurants.
We also got Shanghai noodles in a simple preparation with spring onion oil. Delicious but I always love my noodles to be really firm. I had my doubts with the peking duck, unfortunately the duck wasn't that juicy or flavoursome, some were even missing skin. It's not a peking duck spot so I didn't have high expectations.
The space is large and is easier to come here with a group of people, they even had a private dining room for a team lunch. The restaurant was mostly full and did not have a line snaking out the door like their other establishments.
popped in for a quick feed before the footy and we were feeling some dumplings for dinner, hadn't been here prior but had heard good things.
What we got was well made juicy dumplings and very prompt service with a smile, will return for a proper meal next time.....

Bourke Street is the home of Shanghai Streetās largest and most upmarket branch, up the escalator where the Australian Red Cross Blood Service used to be. The menu is marginally more expensive than its other venues for similar items (e.g. $1 extra for a plate dumplings), but there are no queues, the interior is sleeker, and the service is better. Youāll also find more premium dishes here like Flaming Duck and plenty of seafood.
One of the greater food places I've eaten, fast and tasty. The dumplings are finger licking good. My favourite was the fried dumplings, crispy and golden. This place is a definite Try.
The most delicious dumplings weāve ever had. This new place looks absolutely amazing with the best service and friendly staff you can expect. Highly recommend this place. Great ambiance, awesome food and super friendly staff. Best place ever.
As much as I miss grumpy staff throwing dumplings followed by the bill at me this place is a nice change of pace to the rest of the chain. Food quality pretty similar to what's available in other restaurants with some added presentation and service.
Also not as busy, great place to start a nite out...as ever try the XLB!
Fantastic food, excellent attentive and friendly service and really good value. We loved this place. Every dish we had was delicious - we ordered heaps and loved everything (salt and pepper calamari a little too salty but we still scoffed it down). This is a really great upmarket version of Shanghi Street venues. Will definitely be back.
Lovely service and great food.
Get no 84 (pork prawn wonton with chilli oil sauce).
Really nice and lux atmosphere that creates a goos vibe.
Definitely the best dumplings I've ever had! Pan fried seafood dumplings were awesome. Got it for takeaway and they were still crispy on the bottom but perfectly chewy on the top when we got home! Will be back.
Always love shanghai street dumplings and so pumped they opened a much bigger store with big round tables for bigger groups. Much comfortable to dine in and food still as amazing as ever. One of the best xiao long pao and dumpling places in town
Excellent food at a very reasonable price. All the dishes were very tasty, with the green cauliflower, crystal trotter (lile terrine) and baby spinach with dried beancurd being the standouts. With some wine the final bill was $55/person, which is excellent for the quality and amount of food we had. The ambiance is not so great: formal white tablecoths and napkins, a brightly lit room, and the heating could not keep up with a very cold Melbourne winter evening. Service was fine though if you do like rice with your dinner, itās a good idea to request it early and forcefully as itās not typically served with Shanghai food. We really enjoyed our dinner and will be back.
Fresh, nice food - fried rice and kung pao prawns are a must try!
We went on Sunday for lunch. The place was almost empty, except for us and 2-3 small tables.
Ordered the flaming duck, shanghai juicy buns, fish, rice cakes and vegetarian dumplings.
They all were good and we didn't wait for too long. Just be careful when eating the buns because they are very juicy. Bite the skin of the bun a little bit to suck the juice out.
Service was good, staff was quite attentive.
Price is on a more expensive side.
