Came for a quick fried chicken fix pre covid and it was a delight. From the 3 different flavours I sampled, all were as good as each other. A nice spot with friendly staff and quality food.

By far the best Korean chicken I've ever had in my life! Skin is light and crispy, perfect saltiness and so packed full of flavour! It's unique and different to normal fried chicken from other places like gami, Nene etc. My favourite go to restaurant and honestly I've been there so many times and brought so many people to eat here, friends and family alike. All the people I've brought enjoyed the food just as much as I did. Those that I know who don't like the chicken as much are usually used to the oily fried chicken that you see everywhere else and aren't open minded to trying new things. This is very much different but 100 times better.

Came here for fried chicken & left very satisfied

I love the interior of the restaurant which makes you feel like you're in space! Lots of room to enjoy a conversation and not feel like you're right next to someone on another table.

Kimchi pancake: Super crispy with great flavour
Rice cakes + mozzarella & ramen noodles: So glad you can add ramen to this dish! The cheese was so oozy. We asked for it to be a bit less spicy, which I believe resulted in the sauce being a bit more watery than I would have preferred.
Fried chicken wings with cave salt & sweet lava: The fried chicken was super tasty! I loved both of the flavourings, I just wish there was the option for boneless chicken rather than wings

Super friendly & attentive staff. The food came out in great time!

We loved this place! 😍 Great vibes, amazing fried chicken and good value. I’ll be back. Do beware the items on the menu with 🌶🌶🌶 on them are REALLY really spicy - authentic Asian level spicy! I‘m pretty good at eating spicy food but they were too spicy for me.

Really curious about this place as the menu was small but the reviews were high. Tried 15 pieces of chicken, in sweet lava and flaming lava. Also tried the kimchi pancake. The chicken pieces are like genuine Korean chicken, small but well flavoured. They're not cripsy or well battered at this place. We thought 15 pieces would be a lot but I think the two of us can eat 20 next time. The kimchi pancake is the same, well flavoured but soft instead of cripsy, so soft you can stretch the pieces off each other. Overall not the best Korean chicken I've tried but it is still delicious. Great flavours, but the flaming lava might be too spicy for some.

Rating: 4.5/5

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 just for the wings themselves. Finger-lickin' good!

SERVICE: 4.5/5
Always courteous service here. The owner is mostly busy in the kitchen frying up those perfect wings but he is very lovely and charming if you get a chance to speak to him. Obviously very passionate about his Korean heritage and foood. Happy to support such a wonderful homely business.

FOOD: 4.5/5
I've eaten in a few times, ordered for pick-up as well as order in to the office via uber eats...all times the food has been consistent, consistently delicious and addictive! I've tried REALLY hard but I haven't been able to go without ordering wings every time. They are just TOO GOOD. Frankly the most perfect little crispy, flavoursome wings I've ever had. They get 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me just by themselves. If you like spicy, the flaming lava and red cave salt are both delicious.

Marry the wings up with some stone bowl bibimbap and you are in heaven. The beef stew with tofu is a nice mild soup to break up all the spice.

For something different, also try their rice flour noodles with mozzarella.

Serving sizes and prices are also good value particularly eating share-style with a larger group. Get to taste a bit of everything.

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 4/5
A decent sized space in Pinewood, Mount Waverley with easy parking out front. It can cater for small and large groups but best to book for more than 2 or 3 people especially on peak nights. There is wall to ceiling murals inside which adds to the quirkiness and originality of the brand. Thoroughly enjoy dining in this fun and friendly environment.

KID FRIENDLY: I haven't gone with the kids but I can't see why not. I'd recommend booking ahead asking for pram space if needed. Fri/Sat evenings can also be quite busy & loud if you don't mind it.

A great little gem in the ever bustling Pinewood shopping area. The Korean Fried Chicken from @caveman1961 was ah-mazing! Like seriously on par with some of the other Korean fried chicken joints out there. Also their Soft Tofu soup was no kidding one of the best I’ve had!! Will definitely come back to try their Budae Jjigae!

Stumbled upon this place randomly. Decor was very inviting, well-lit and clean.

Very small menu. Of course tried the fried chicken (red cave salt) which was amazing. The outer coating was crisp, meat was soft and the glaze on the coating gave it a nice mild sweetness. The 'spicy salt' had a nice spicy kick which was just right..spicy but not overpoweringly spicy.

Bibimbab - all the ingredients seemed very fresh and it's a good healthy choice. Chilli sauce was mild (not as spicy as the chicken wings) but helped add good flavour to the dish. Maybe I felt like there was only a small amount of beef in the dish.

Kimchi pancake - was slightly disappointing. I felt like it was baked then put on a hotplate to serve without much frying beforehand... so it was quite doughy and chewy compared to other places with only a little bit of crispness. But the kimchi flavour does come through well.

Overall, well worth it for the chicken which is amazing. They do have stew options for 2-3 people so might have to come for that next time as that also seemed a popular option

One of the best Korean fried chicken wings I’ve tried. One feedback I’d like to mention is that there was more ramen than actual rice cakes. It’d be great to have fish cakes included too. Overall, great experience with friendly staff!

Caveman 1961 has a very large seating so it can definitely cater large groups and family dinners. They’re specialty is korean fried chicken, so my family and I ordered the cave salt, the spicy version of cave salt and the sweet chilli one. The favourite was the sweet chilli one because it wasn’t too drenched sauce and was a delicious flavour. The original was good as well, unique and flavoursome. The spicy version was definitely spicy (the kick was there) but it was a bit too salty. The chicken was so so crispy and the meat was cooked to perfection! My family also loved the cream cheese! It complimented the chicken well and was super creamy. The dumplings were tasty but They didn’t really stand out to me. Overall a very nice feed and would definitely come here for my chicken fix!

We tried here for the first time tonight and were pleasantly surprised! Ordered 20 chicken wings to share for 3 people and it was plenty. Enjoyed the delicious red cave salt and the flaming chilli flavour. Also enjoyed the pork and tofu soup which was tasty but for $35 we hoped to get more meat. We got the kim chi and radish for $2 each which was big serving. We went back and got the kimchi pancake as well which was yummy. Staff were nice and helpful too which added to the experience.

Nice, quaint, Korean restaurant in the heart of Mount Waverley.

We ordered:
- Cave Salt and Red Cave Salt (Spicy) flavoured chicken wings
- Soft tofu pot

The wings were noteworthy although on the smaller side. This allowed the flavour to really seep in. The Cave Salt flavour reminded us of honey soy but with a crunchy kick.
The skin was the star of the show, packed with a honey soy-esque flavour and crispy without compromising on drying out the flesh. However it was the bare-boned pieces that told us the chicken had not had a good life.

Red Cave Salt wings and Tofu soup were the spicy items, and wow were they spicy 😝🔥! We added 2 bowls of rice to help us get through it all!

Ambience: Casual vibe about the place consisting of diverse patrons. The waiters were extremely friendly and avoided laughing at our poor spice tolerance. XD

KFC is all the rage at the moment. No, I am talking about Korean Fried Chicken. Despite Caveman offering a limited variety of KFC, it does get the recipe down pat and the quality is always superb. Together with cheese corn, a glass of cold soda or beer and you have a tasty, filling and satisfying meal. The interior design left me wondering but given the name of the place, I guess it makes sense. Highly recommended! Check this place out.

Ordered some wings divided into 3 flavours. Cave Salt, Red Cave Salt and Sweet Lava. The wings were amazing. Nice and crispy on the outside with enough seasoning to keep you satisfied. My favourite two would be Red Cave Salt closely followed by Cave Salt. The wings are quite small but I couldn't care less. These wings are awesome! It's my new favourite place for fried chicken.

The service was also great and staff were very friendly.

Ordered the 100 piece chicken, one of each flavour and the rice cakes with Ramen and the cheese. The rice cakes was so good! Like majority of the place I have been tasted pretty boring but not this place! God it was so delicious and the chicken was amazing too, especially the sweet lava and rock salt one 👌 only disappointment was no plastic gloves was given, like Nene chicken? But overall still an awesome first experience. Definitely coming back 🍗

Great local Korean place! Known for their wings which are crispy and a great eat. They are abit pricey though.

Food: We ordered the toppoki and 10 wings ( half original and sweet spicy). The toppoki we got with ramen and cheese and was really nice, it was decently sized although there wasn't as much rice cake but alot of ramen. The wings were super cruncy and sauce was so nice, it was around $1-2 a wing, honestly they aren't that filling but really good. They do add up and can get pricey .

Service: It was alright, nothing amazing. Just the typical service I would expect from any restaurant.

Ambience: The restaurant is cute, the ceiling has a space theme and seating is comfy! Its a great place for a big group of people.

We were in the area and had a craving for Asian food. The place we had originally planned wasn’t open so we decided to drop in here for some Korean food. So glad we did, this place didn’t disappoint. We ordered the pork dumplings which actually tasted like pork rather than mystery meat - they were crispy and full of flavor. We also ordered the chicken wings with cave salt and red cave salt - both were good but my partner preferred the latter for that hint of spice. I couldn’t go past the bibimbap in the stone pot which reminded me of mum’s cooking and just really hit the spot. Kimchi here is legit, full flavoured spicy tangy goodness. The decor is hip and spacious. Even though there weren’t many people at lunch, I can imagine a lot of chicken and Korean beer getting consumed here at night. A little pricey but a nice place for a tasty lunch or a big birthday bash, or after work drinks and nibbles.

I was relieved when I heard that the folks behind what was formerly Meega in Glen Waverley, had finally opened their new place in pinewood under a new name. The space is far bigger and they've done well with the decor. I was looking forward to my favourite Korean fried chicken in all of Melbourne, but was disappointed when I saw that they had changed their repertoire of flavours. The best one ever--the honey soy garlic--was not to be found. Very very sad, although I understand why they had to reinvent themselves a bit. I found the new cave salt flavours to be nothing in comparison, but they were still decent. The chicken was a tad dryer this time than what I remember too. I'm glad they've kept their stews on the menu, those were always a hit. The cheesy corn grande is one of the best I've had too, while the man doo and kimchi pancake are also good. Japchae, bulgogi and tteokbokki are not bad only.

Decided to try this place after i heard it was the new meega from Glen Waverley. We ordered 3 flavours of chicken (cave salt, red cave salt, sweet lava). We also ordered the cheesy corn grande and the japchae. The cheesy corn had a contrast of flavours which was pleasant. The japchae was average. I enjoyed all the chicken flavours, however the red cave was very spicy! I enjoyed it albeit with some burning of the mouth. Also to note, the chicken pieces were quite small although i suspect this increased the flavour surface area to volume ratio.

Used to be eat here all the time when it was called Meega near The Glen! Love the Cave Salt flavoured chicken and their spicy soft tofu soup ! And their kimchi pancake is the best for us compared to other places we've tried, slightly crispy and simple. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Ordered the army stew and chicken wings. Chicken wings were crisp and tasted delicious, especially the caveman salt flavoured ones. The army stew was delicious but I wish they added cheese and had more luncheon meat - the luncheon meat was cut so thinly in small strips there was hardly any. We had to add extra $3 for ramen noodles which made the stew come to $40. Wayyy too expensive compared to other Korean places. This place also doesn't have free side dishes and we even had to order pickled radish for $2 to eat with the wings whereas other places will give it free. All in all good food but quite expensive.

Came with a large group on a Sunday for lunch. Really wasn't busy at all. It's not visible from the Main Street, and the name of the place doesn't suggest what it serves. It's a good sized Korean restaurant run by the folks who used to operate out of Chikilia when operating under the "meega" business.
We had the army jigae, cheesy corn, kimchi pancake, and loads of chicken. The food was good, especially the jigae, pancake and corn, but prices are a little high(average for Korean fried chicken). Great friendly staff and ajussi (manager).

LIT!: tried the first 3 flavours for the fried chicken and really liked all of them! The cheesy corn here is extra cheesy as well. wow interior is trippy! Love it!

NOT SO LIT: kimchi pancake was undercooked in the inside, so maybe leave it on the hot plate longer if you can. Also note that each chicken wing is smallllller than what you would find at gami or other Korean chicken places.

Thanks for having us!

So my cousin recommend Caveman for dinner, saying that they used to be Meega at Glen Waverley. We had an amazing dinner consisting of the Army Stew (with ramyun added) and 8-piece fried chicken. The portion for the stew is more suited for sharing, so get your friends down here! The owner was very friendly and enthusiastic, and even topped up the broth for our stew. For the chicken, we had red cave salt, which was savoury and slightly spicy, and sweet lava, that was sticky sweet chilli, on crispy fried chicken. All in all, we had a delicious meal and left super full and satisfied!

I decided to head down and try this place following a recommendation from a friend of mine saying it was "better than Gami" - (Is that even possible?!).

With some apprehension I drove down to the Pinewood shops and walked in to Caveman1961 on a pleasant Saturday afternoon and was greeted by the lovely owner Park and his daughter, and shown to a table in the lovely clean, crisp interior of Caveman1961.

After much deliberation of the menu I decided on a mix of the 4 different fried chicken coatings on offer, ordering 10 pieces in total with a side of the apparently Korean-centric 'cheese and corn'.

When they were promptly brought out I dug into the juicy, flavoursome pieces of chicken which had just the right amount of seasoning and crunchy coating, not too sweet like other places. To put it short - they were delicious!

I now understand the fondness of corn cheese, shovelling in spoonfuls of the stuff in between pieces of delicious fried chicken balanced out the saltiness of the chicken with the sweetness of the corn just beautifully.

Park came out and asked my thoughts of which I couldn't say a single negative word about! We sat and chat (along with his lovely daughter) about all things life, food, Korea and they were such lovely warm people.

The price was also great, significantly lower than other Korean fried chicken places around the area.

Do yourself a favour and try this place, I can see it being very popular once its more established.

Park - You have yourself a return customer here!

Great neighbourhood Korean place run by the same family owners that did those fantastic simple Korean dishes at Meega in Glen Waverley all those years ago. Just like back then, they have a limited menu here, but what they do, they do extremely well - personal favourites are the army sausage stew (budae jjigae) which is full of flavour and spice and excellent in breaking the winter chill, and the Korean Fried Chicken with their signature salts which differentiates and puts it a cut above all those other franchises and places. Owners and staff are friendly and fun, and really make meals here enjoyable - to the point where this has now become my "local"!

Hidden amongst the other established restaurants, this new restaurant isn't so new - in fact, it's the old owner of Meega in Glen Waverley. Known for their crispy Korean fried chicken, this restaurant now offers a few more dishes to the menu. Plenty of seating compared to the old shop, it is still recommended to make a booking for seating and pre-ordering as the chicken takes 20-25 mins upon order. This restaurant offers plenty of Korean drink including beer and soju. Service is friendly and helpful here. Food is generous in portion and reasonably priced. Been going back every week for a korean fix because we keep craving for more and trying the different stuff from the menu! It can get really busy over fri-sun despite bookings because it's family run and they have only 1 waiting staff so I recommend going on weekdays! Really loved the spice level and the staff are all super friendly and nice! Can't wait to go back again :) loved the cave salt chicken, army stew and soft tofu stew. I'm a spice lover, so the spice level is comfortable enough for me to crave more or continue eating, it doesnt put you off! Perfect for cold days! So if you're up for the challenge or feeling spicy that night, it'll be good!

The date:The 7th of June 2017

The food:'Snack sized fried chicken wings' with the sauce 'red cave salt'.

The price:$17

The portion:10 pieces of the chicken wingettes and the chicken drumettes.

The taste:It has a really unique flavour which I have never tasted before.I am not sure what this flavour is, but the name 'red cave salt' suits this flavour well.It tastes very clean and naturally spicy which keeps me going.I like the dry and crispy texture which reminds me of the caramel popcorn.Just like its name 'red cave salt', it tastes like red(spicy) cave salt. It's dangerously addictive and tasty.

The comment:It was the BEST chicken I have ever tasted so far.I am so happy I found this place and I will definitely be the regular customer here!

Exceeds expectations. I came here for beer and chicken and left shocked. The fried chicken is in a league of it's own with it's crispy, succulent, melt in your mouth, finger licking goodness. It takes a while to come but it's made fresh when you order and I appreciate that. I will definitely come back. It's a bit pricy but you get what you pay for. Quality food, warm bubbly atmosphere with fantastic service.

Went to try the fried chicken flavours, rock salt and sweet. My preferred taste is the rock salt standard version. It's crispy and quite tasty on its own. Satisfying to eat and it was not oily. The chicken comes with some small sides which are good complements.

At the time visited, the door lock was broken, so we could not get inside until another customer helped to open the door from the inside. Hopefully it's fixed up soon.

Chicken takes around 20 minutes to cook and the price for 20 pieces is $32, around $1.88 per piece. I thought the size of the pieces seemed slightly smaller than over at chickilia in Glenny. However I haven't made a direct comparison. This place is worth a try for the fried chicken.

There used to be a hole in the wall eatery in Glen Waverley behind a Korean grocer that sat around 10 to 15 people. Transport now to the present we have Caveman1961, not too sure about the caveman themed Korean restaurant, cavemen ate fried chicken?
What everyone comes here for is their fried chicken. They utilise the chicken wing portion (my personal favourite), deep fried without batter and still maintains crispy edges. Their sauces are pretty confusing on paper but they have the classic flavours such as sweet chilli and soy garlic, all great without being sickening as sometimes is with KFC. Their wings however seem to be on the small side, maybe because it's not battered.
Their side of cheesey corn is delicious (small) and their spicy rice was gluggy (not my favourite). Their kimchi pork stew hit the spot especially with the recent cold weather we've been enduring. Try their tteokbokki with all the additions next time, it's one of my favourites! Service can be slow on a busy night (they only had 1 waitress for a crowded restaurant) so hope she gets extra help on those busy days. It's a family run business and they're really lovely people if you have a chance to speak with them.
