Review Funk Fish - Melbourne

Daisy
Mixed review on the fish & chips. Two of us shared this plate & opinions differ. But make sure to eat it hot. It's yucky when it turns cold.

I had the snack pack. The fish was great, nice and chunky and still moist. The tartare sauce was good too...not your usual masterfoods. However, as noted in other reviews, the chips were old and barely warm. This is a real shame. May I suggest that they cook the chips in smaller batches and throw them out if they have sat for too long.

awesome fish & chips .. Love this place ... owner was very nice ...

The fish and chips are great and surprisingly reasonably priced. One, rather huge, concern was that they used some piece of seemingly used newspaper as a layer on their paper plates.

We had 3 grilled fish today and was one of the best fish tasted. Lady grilled fresh an the spot and was very generous and friendly:10/10 in customer service too. Will definitely return and highly recommended.

They have some pretty tasty fish and potatoe cakes, very crispy and fresh. chips are a bit of a letdown however, not that hot and a little flavourless. Hot beverages are very nice here, especially the chai latte.

0 Star. Worst fish and chips. Seafood salad had 3 shrimps only and all bad quality fishcake. Served 3 fishes in 1 plate. When I asked for additional plate refused straight forward. I offered paying money for empty plate. The owner through the plate to me. These guys should not be in business. They are shame to all Aussie restaurant. Only their location is good .. corner of the Queen Victoria market. Will never go

The absolute worst. Just don’t. $1.50 for tomato sauce with your fries. No aoili option. Cole slaw was SLIMY. SLIMY. I REPEAT: SLIMY. Nasty of nastiness. Fish tasted fishy like all good old fish will. KEEP WALKING.

I always look at the queue of a place to gauge its worthiness. :-) They are always busy here! The food is fresh, with the seafood sourced just next door. Literally next door. The fisherman's basket has fish, prawns, scallops, calamari, potato cakes & hot chips. It's only $15.50 and the serving is enough for 2 people. We added some coleslaw and it was a good Aussie meal. Just a bit tiny space so I was kind of trapped while waiting for my order. Market Food Court is not that busy on week days but today some neighbouring schools decided to let their students eat lunch there. Was packed but we were able to find a seat. :-)

The location is in the area of Queen Vic Market. I was came here for brunch. I choosed grilled fillet with salad and the snack pack, both of them are delicious. Such a tasty food with affordable prices!

Quick and cheap fish and chips. The servings are generous for the price. It was tasty but everything was pre cooked which was slightly disappointing especially as we got there in the afternoon and had no idea how long it was laying out front for
Gee
So most of the stuff is pre prepared and in the Bain Marie. None of the seafood looked that appetising so I played it safe and got a couple of dim sims on the run. As expected.

They serve good fish and chips I think the fish that they use is from the Victoria fish market and the portion is huge I did not able to finish it it is a licensed restaurant and the meal is enough for 2 people

Was very crowded so went there. The grilled fish and chips was average. The chips were soggy :( so not freshly fried . The grilled fish itself lacked basic seasoning or flavor. A simple salt pepper and lemon would have made it so much better....

This crispy fish fillet is good. The batter they use makes the fish fillet light and crispy. The chips I reckon can do better. All in this cost about 9-10 bucks.

Funkfish is a place in Victoria Market in the free tram zone. This is great for tourists and for the locals alike. Here they have $6.90 snack pacsk as well as regular meals and sushi. I'm not a fan of their sushi just looking at it and seeing how it was made. its usually dry. They are in the food court and the service was nonchalant. They weren't really happy about having to wake up at 5am (or ealier) to get to the market. The market opens at 6am.They serve wine with fish. Something which the rest of the market does not do.This fish was good. I think it was a flake, but they were a bit heavy on the batter. I really didn't like the tasteless chips though. They were from the bain marie and had been sitting there for a while. I think they were the Birds Eye type.Rating: 10/20- once is enough. I won't be making that same mistake again when there are other fish and chip shops around Melbourne.

Fish wasn't fresh and dry.
Salad was ok.
Chips was so so.
Tartar sauce was just like a sweet mayonnaise..I didn't like that.
I won't come again.

Average fish and chips. They offered fried and grilled fish. I ordered grilled fish. When I paid, the lady said it is an extra dollar (1 dollar more than the price stated on menu) for grilled fish. Yet my friend who went for fried fish also paid that extra dollar. Hmmmm, what?

Not the most generous portions at times, but yummy fish and satisfactory chips.

Food court level quality but quick and cheap. I wonder whether the owners who chose the name for this place are aware of ALL of the word "funk's" connotations in American slang? (Although why should they be -- this is Australia!) In addition to meaning "soul brother groove-heavy musical cool" "funk" also means what "pong" does down here. And we all know what fish smells like when it gets funky. Am I spending too much time thinking about this? In spite of the name, I wanted to try Funk Fish anyway. The food court at Vic Market is not gourmet, but it's comprised of independent eateries, not franchises, and they dish out adequate dishes. Plus It's in a good spot for me to rush to on lunch break when I'm working at the Royal Melbourne. I can tram down, eat and be back in less than 45 minutes.

The filet I got from Funk Fish was average. The fish tasted fresh, but the oil it was cooked in had a too-old edge to its flavour. This place does a lot of business, so maybe by 1 p.m. when I was there it was already getting over-used. The beer batter was too thick and undercooked in a couple places, not to the point of being drippy, just a little claggy. The chips were so-so, decent amount with the platter. The salad was the best thing, loaded with tomato, cucumber and lightly dressed. It only cost $9.90, so I can't fault the price. Because of the volume of trade Funk Fish does, there are filets cooked and ready serve while they're still hot (at least at lunchtime.) So I had a plate in my hands three minutes after I placed my order. When I've got to tram back to work in a hurry, that means a lot to me.

Located in the Queen Vic Market Food Hall, I had my eye on something else for a quick lunch between fruit and veggie shopping but the crumbed calamari rings here caught my eye. I tried the Fisherman's Basket but unfortunately the calamari rings were the only thing good about the meal. The batter was too thick and the fish wasn't fresh. The chips were ok and the tartare sauce packet they gave you was the smallest helping of sauce I have ever seen. It was a pain to get a seat in the hall, literally had to stalk out diners preparing to leave like a seagull!

Plain Jane. Milkshake was very bland. Chocolate flavour almost tasted like vanilla. They fact they could not make them in their store was interesting. They had to go next door in order to get them made.

Amazing Lunch.... The fish was amazing and the seafood salad was great....

I love markets, so the first thing I did the weekend in Melbourne was going to the Queen Victoria Market. A landmark of the city, 17 acres, largest open market in the Southern Hemisphere, opened in 1878, tourist destination, and a good place to find, vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, seafood, delicatessen, and even clothes, arts, and crafts. I wandered around for a while, and ended in the Food Court, several vendors trading traditional cuisines from India to Italian, with the popular meat pies loved by Aussies and Fish and Chips. The Fish and Chips stall Funk Fish took my attention so ended having crab nuggets. Not good at all, ok flavour but extremely saggy, nothing memorable. Kept walking until I found the Deli Hall, art deco vendors, with marble counters, dips, pates, cured meats, meats and poultry, sweets, and cheese, lots of cheese. So if you fancy crocodile meat that'€™s the place.
