Love the outdoor areas. The porridge and the corn waffle were awesome but the Spanish baked egg was very oily. I wish we can get something Lemony to cut through the grease.

5 stars for an almost perfect brunch experience; went with the wife and young bub this morning and came away full of great food and reasonably pleased with the service that went with it.
We arrived around 11:30 and were quickly found a pram-friendly table inside, with the staff moving furniture to accommodate the pram and, after a further request, a high-chair (as an aside, it was one of the better high-chairs we have encountered - our bub had a ball). Our first order for drinks was quickly taken, with mine, a bottled soft-drink, delivered promptly; the first minor blemish was a delay in having the banana smoothie brought out. Once alerted to the delay, the staff were all over the situation and had it brought out quickly. The wife didn't eventually enjoy the smoothie, but I tried it and thought it was quite alright.
For food we ordered an avocado pide with added egg and the gnocchi special; a second blemish, with the egg not provided with the pide, was very quickly rectified with no fuss. While the pide was great, the mix of cottage cheese and avo was really refreshing on a warm day, the gnocchi was the cake-taker; I'd nearly ordered this also and had serious envy of the wife when it came out. Thankfully her serving was huge, so I was able to polish off the gnocchi mixed with bacon, mushroom, peas, parmesan and a wonderfully rich and creamy sauce for her. Yum.
We finished with sweets, sharing a chocolate brownie and vanilla slice between us as our bub ate comparatively unremarkable puree (BYO). We agreed that the vanilla slice was possibly the best ever encountered by either of us, while the brownie was also very tasty.
We have been previously for a quick bite and coffee, but this second visit has cemented Canteen as a lock-in for future feeds. Highly recommended, particularly when the weather is nice enough to enjoy the outdoor eating area (as many were today with their pooches). Family friendly, great food and great service, how could you go wrong.
Hadn't been in a few years but stopped by early on last Sunday morning. At 9am the place was already busy! Was in a rush so ordered straight away. Had the special, Smashed Avo with asparagus, eggs and dukkah. It arrived quickly and was delicious! Service was prompt and friendly and coffee was good and also arrived quickly. Will be back again!
Everything is so so beautiful view staff food especially on a sunny day outside first time here but will come back again and again came with my puppy and she was so calm and absolutely loved it.

Lunch here was pretty good. Wouldnt say its my all time favourite but was good. Worth a try if in the area. Good area on a nice day. 3.5 is fair.
Great little spot by the water to stop at on a bike ride or walk. I had the shakshuka eggs (a special) and added pulled pork. It was full of flavour and to be honest, didn't even need the side of pork, my eyes were just bigger than my belly! My boyfriend said his chicken pepper pide was pretty good. Lastly, my coffee was really nice, and the service was good too! I'd recommend it.
This place is great for a sunny afternoon but I think is pretty expensive for what it is. They've changed the menu now but I had black sticky rice and it was everything but sticky. Coffee is good though and their caramel slice is awfully delicious! Service could be quicker
Very friendly service. Short but varied menu. Excellent food in lovely surroundings. Fresh flavours and cooking done with great care. We'll be back here a lot.
A must go to try the italian hot chocolate! Great to finish off the walk on the bike track, and even to sit and chill on the outside tables. Such a family friendly restaurant and even very accommodating to have dogs sit beside you whilst you enjoy the amazing food. The smashed avocado comes with the most amazing cream cheese, its a must order.
Great spot! I had a delicious Butter Chicken curry on a rainy day. Eftpos minimum is $20 which is a little high and the curry was $20 too so that worked out well. Music was a tad loud. All in all a great spot. Will definitely come back
Great place for a meal, coffee, watching the world go by. We had breakfast here on a cold Melbourne Spring morning. Coffees were excellent with a wonderful aroma of good beans. Breakfast comprised the "river hash" and "corn cakes". Both were well cooked, pretty as a picture on the plate. It's always an experience for us going to Kanteen as its not exactly round the corner. Certainly makes the destination worthwhile.
Kanteen can be found in hands-down the best location in South Yarra. Nestled on the banks of the Yarra River, Kanteen is an ideal place to go for coffee or brunch after a Sunday morning stroll. Not only are the surroundings exquisite, but the staff were lovely when we came here for the first time the other day. We both had the Toasted Avocado Pidé, which was divine. Fresh, tasty ingredients in a decent serving size - at an incredibly reasonable price. We'll definitely be back, without a doubt!
Great coffee, great brownies & great location! I went to Kanteen 2.30pm on a Thursday and there were only 4 other customers - which I actually liked. May have to do with the private riverside location on Alexandra Ave. On Saturdays this cage can get pretty busy with cyclists. Yet to try their brekkie - will be back to check it out!

Perched on a peaceful bend of the Yarra River, you can easily leave the hustle of nearby Chapel Street behind as you walk through Kanteen’s green front door.
On a cold winter’s afternoon this place was near deserted, which suited me just fine, claiming a prime window seat overlooking the Yarra River. Despite this technically being in the ‘outdoors area’, I easily sat sans coat, gloves and scarf as the overhead heaters were hotter than Alessandra Ambrosio in a Victoria Secret runway show. Warning: Kanteen does have more outdoor seating than indoor seating, so make sure you claim the prime real estate under the heater.
There was plenty to like about this peaceful riverside spot that sports a somewhat picnic vibe, and with plenty of rare South Yarra parking it was easier to get to than I thought. Take your pick from a range of yummy breakfast and lunch options, as well as a substantial dessert and cake selection. The coffee wasn’t bad either and arrived quicker than a Metro Train. Eclectic furniture adds to the charm.

Kanteen has the most beautiful location and a very sweet menu to match. Spanish eggs & a banana smoothie set our smiles alight. Heaps of other great baked treats to chose from too. Peddle your way to this great little cafe today. 🚴🏼

The best Spanish eggs I've tried in Melbourne, we also had the sardines, an interesting brunch choice, but one I was not disappointed with. Staff are exceptionally friendly and the coffees consistently good. Situated on the Yarra it's picturesque and perfect for a coffee/ brunch stop during your cycle/run.
Converted from public toilet this cafe have really transformed this area. Situated right on the Yarra opposite top Herring island it's a hidden retreat perfect for lazy lunch. Wholesome food complimented by great coffee.
Good food! Friendly staff! Felt guilty watching the rowers and cyclists but the food was too good to just have a great coffee! Will return!!

Went here this afternoon for lunch. Great location right beside the river. Has a friendly and laid back feel. Our meals were scrumptious - I had the steak sandwich. The strawberry smoothie tasted very commercialised (I would have rathered see something like organic date protein smoothie or something on the menu then just a plain strawberry smoothie). The service whilst paying took a while and it took about 5-10 minutes to be acknowledged upon entering but apart from that I would return!
Had late lunch with some friends , pretty happy with it ,and don't mind visiting there again soon! I highly recommend acai berry juice! Really nice vibe and friendly services, easy parking on weekdays (off-peak).
Kanteen is in probably the best spot in Melbourne to sit and a have a coffee. Easy to park, easy to find, great view. Unforunately everyone else in Melbourne thinks so too... which means it's always busy!! O

Fave cafe in Melbourne. Bread and Butter pudding OMG!!!!. We went to Kanteen on a Sunday around midday for a late breakfast. We got a table straight away. I had the river hash which blew my mind! Unbelievably tasty satisfying good food. U can tell the ingredients are quality. Being an English lass I was excited to see bread and butter pudding on the menu. It was insanely good!!! Almost better than mums!! Coffee is gorgeous too and the setting by the river = just perfect. Unpretentious as well. I found all the staff to be lovely despite what the below reviews say and the service was really efficient. Only waited 5 mins for coffee and 15 for food. Will be back ASAP.

Had the Spanish Meatballs and Poached Eggs on a bed of Wholegrain. Super tasty and a huge serving. Service was very polite, friendly and timely. (Though they did forget 1 coffee). Definitely come down and give these guys a go
A great location and staff do their best. Coffee is to die for! Always great:-) If you are worried about $1 or $2 because you don't have cash.! Get over it , this is a great spot for food, ambience and coffee ! If you are worried about a dollar MacDonald has a spare change menu where you can put $2 fries on your card!

Great!. Had a lovely breakfast last weekend at Kanteen! My smoked salmon eggs dish was perfectly cooked and no one else on the table had any complaints re food! The service was a little slow, we had to ask the waiter for more coffees after a while but other than that it was great - Beautiful little spot!

Pretty decent pit stop for a Sunday morning Yarra bike ride or walk. Brekkie pose was ok....I don't like dill. Banana and date bread good. Fast service. Would go again. Nice also that they support kids with HIV/AIDS in Cambodia. Worthy cause.
Reliably tasty. Visited this cafe a number of times and it never disappoints. The venue is nice and relaxed and the staff are friendly and helpful. Very trusting too as they don't record what you have at your table, rather rely on you being honest when you go to the register.
Food menu has some interesting alternatives for breakfast (corn cakes are fab) and eggs are always perfectly poached. Coffee is pretty good too.

Free and breezy. Love coming to this place for a casual coffee or light meal. The venue is uber cool, in a converted toilet block, and the coffee is always EXCELLENT and creamy. The muffins for some reason are frightfully expensive but everything else is great value as the ingredients are so fresh.

Always pleases. I'm quite sure that the people who complain of bad service, overpriced meals and bland food are not going to the same Kanteen I am. I love going to Kanteen for breakfast and am always seated promptly, waited on attentively and served fresh and tasty food, most of which comes in at under $15. The toasted avocado pide is a personal favourite and highly recommended!
The decor, atmosphere and setting are fantastic and the staff are friendly. Don't be deterred by bad reviews posted by people who have had an isolated bad experience. Every time I have visited, this place really delivers.
Nice to sit outdoors.. Went past at 12:30 on Sunday. Two of us got a small table outside, overlooking the river which was delightful.
Coffee was great. I order latte and generally like a smooth, not too stong blend, and this was perfect. We both ordered corn bread with avocado and poached egg. Delicious. However too much lemon on the avocado...I usually add lemon to everything, I love it, but seriously - this was too too much!
Pretty basic menu, and defo expensive. Service was ok, we were asked by 3 different servers if we wanted to order when we already had. And then when we wanted a second coffee...no one to be seen.
I'd go back to sit outdoors on a sunny day.

Very good food and a terrific setting along the yarra bank. Latte has too much froth and that bitter back of the throat taste I'm not fond of. English breakfast tea was pretty good though according to my partner in crime.
Just stopped for coffee. Ended up having the freshest eggs (poached). Mind you i didnt have to have the obligatory two. Ordered one which left room for a fresh fluffy poached fruit muffin. And to top it off real butter for the toast !!! Hubby had eggs Benny. Coffee was amazing flavour and actually made to the strength we wanted. We will definitely be back.
Great river cafe spot! Would have loved some more vegan options in the menu to match the location. The veggie green breakfast was very tasty; could have used another piece of toast, it's buried under so much food! Lovely food though, plated well and the atmosphere is great. Coffee was good and well made. A little on the expensive side all up but worth a visit.
Ate here today. Service staff were attentive, fast (even though the place was packed). Chai latte was very hot, perfect for a cold day. Food was exceptionally good. We will definitely be back.
