Been here plenty of times for years now, even with previous owner or before menu changed to the current one. Food is still served well, whether it is steak or pasta. For your first time, highly recommend to dine in rather than take away. The experience is better. Food takes a bit of time to get served but it’s worth the wait. Love the steak, lamb shanks, entrees and pizza 😋
The food was excellent and the restaurant was clean and today. A massive rogue bug skittered across the desk while I was paying was a bit unnerving but other than that, it was an alright meal. Would go back! :)
Such amazing customer service! The staff were super friendly and this is my go to place if I’m ever craving a steak. The mushroom sauce is divine, the meat is made to perfection and the salad dressing is magnificent. Been here so many times and it has never failed to disappoint me. Not even once!
Gotta mention the girl serving us, she was so friendly and always smiling which made us feel so welcomed. She was attentive and quick.

Anyway, the food is excellent for its price, plated beautifully.
Downside is that the mushroom sauce was a bit too creamy for my likings and got quite sickening halfway through. Other than that, the steak was cooked to perfection with nice salad and chips. Really enjoyed it.

Have always dined at Umago for a number of years now and have noticed slight changes to the flavour of the menu to which I assume may be a change of owners? Regardless, the scotch fillet was cooked to par in addition to the mushroom sauce tasting cheesier than usual which I enjoyed! A year ago, the mushroom sauce had mustard seeds in them (which I did not enjoy) and was reluctant to come back. Food came out within 20 minutes of ordering which is an improvement from 30+ minutes a year ago. Sad to see the Turkish bread has been removed from the steak dish, nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
Best STEAK ever, Love to enjoy here every 2 weeks with my family. Eye Fillet Steak with mushroom sauce is so delicous and Garlic Bread as well.
Love this Cafe! The food is great! Friendly service and great ambiance. The lunch specials are not to be missed! Pulled lamb burger highly recommended but there is something for everyone on the menu. Easy to get to short walk from the 86 tram.

Been here a few times since my favorite whisky bar Elysian is a block away. I've always order the BBQ ribs which are almost always perfect (although pictured was slightly burnt) ridiculously tender and if you're like me with melting animal fat in your mouth then you'll be in heaven here. Chips have always been perfect too.
My wife normally has the pizzas here and she's yet to have one that she didn't like, thin crisp btw. The Gnocchi Lamb ragu was lovely not being too heavy and a decent tomato kick. The bar being next to the kitchen my red wine is often warm so be prepared to let it cool down or pop a cube of ice in it. Service generally very friendly although they do get rather busy sometimes.
Great pizza with vegan options, delicious wine, nice ambiance and a birthday party. The service was super and friendly :) not very expensive and we just walked in off the street.
My family has been eating at Cafe Umago for many years and it never disappoints. Food and service is always wonderful, everything on the menu is good ‘honest’ food. Child friendly and won’t kill your wallet.

tonight we had ordered the homemade raspberry tea and the lamb ragu gnocchi with the large size meatlovers which was very delicious and tasty! the service was great too! overall we enjoy coming this place both for the food and service! 😊
It for sure deserves a 5 for the food and the service. Surprisingly not crowded at weekend ( we started at 2pm actually). A good place to take a casual dining with bestie. Spaghetti recommended.

A chill cafe tucked in the cozy Fitzroy neighborhood. Came here on a hot afternoon with a friend and had the most delicious house bruschetta and mexican pizza. Definitely a place to come back for a bite.
This is my favorite spot ! grilled eye fillet steak is always really good. And you can choose one of the dipping sauce. For me mushroom sauce is the best !! Garlic bread also perfect. It’s fresh garlic bread.(not that frozen ones) but it was bit salty for me. umago special pasta also best. Staff is also kind and perfect like my dinner :)
Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Gnocchi ragu was fantastic but the lamb in the Cesar salad was slightly tough. Very friendly staff!

Been going here for 10 years. My first date was here and my engagement hapoened here. Food has always been satisfying. You get really good sized portions none of the stingy crap you get at other places. They keep it real and keep their muni changing. What to order: ribs, steak, pizza and pasta and salads. Pros: steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and juicy and the mushroom sauce was ahhh-mazing! The chips were nice and crisp, complemented well with the steak. Bruschetta was flavoursome and seasoned nicely, colourful presentation.
Cons: went on a boiling hot day and cool, comfortable aircon was lacking. Service could have been better.
My favourite restaurant, never had a bad meal here. Have taken many friends here and they have all loved it. Plenty of options for all cuisines and tastes.

Filling feed for a good price, although mushroom sauce portion seems smaller these days. And bread wasn’t served warm like it used to be.
Small tip - steak would be easier to eat if it was served on the plate and not on top of chips as it was hard to cut and eat. But the steak was really tasty and cooked well!

The food, the ambiance and the service was amazing. We had some tasty spaghetti bolognese and a spinach and ricotta ravioli. They even made us some iced chai on demand.

Wanted to grab some food, but we weren't sure what was open during the Christmas holiday period. Lucky for us, Cafe Umago was open, making this our 2nd visit.
Once again the food was great, the serving sizes were generous and at an affordable price, and the waitress was friendly and helpful. We would happily come back again anyday.

On a languorous rainy evening in dusk, we ate the night away with the Slow Cooked short-ribs beef & the Black Angus Steak. Both were cooked to utter perfection. The sauce used to delicately sizzle the short ribs were splendid. Be sure to try out the steak accompanied by the mushroom sauce as it was delightful!
Spaghetti is juicy! The pizza is not too hard or soft. Only feel not good as we wait a little long time for the dishes! Will recommend friends to have a try.
My sister and i come here often! We really love the reasturant and we love the food! We were a little sad to see that some of our favorite vegetarian options are now unavaliable!! Despite this we will still frequent this venue.

I had ordered pizzas from here a few times - and they are okay, but nothing special - so I was a bit reluctant when my friend wanted to have lunch here. She ordered a steak and I ordered chicken and they were both amazing! The portions were massive and everything was cooked perfectly.
Only issue is that the food took forever, but other than that, it was great.

Just driving along Brunswick street towards city to find somewhere to eat nice lunch. Umago is almost end of the shopping and bar area opposite of Foodworks. A few people seating and takeaway deliver with their gourmet to serve quiet lunch on Saturday noon. Warm fireplace, cozy wooden dining areas and attentive polite customer service.
We ordered delicious rich creamy Fettuccine Carbonara and very tender Scotch Fillet Steak with excellent rich creamy mushrooms sauce. It came with pepperly onion flavored crispy thick chips and beautiful fresh dressings on mix salad. They have excellent chef who can make really tasty sauces. There was no time to take photos for delicious dishes.
We really enjoyed our meals that I will put on my go to list for heavy lunch or dinner.

Salmon Cutlet = Perfection!
After a day of retail therapy, and considering its a public holiday, we decided to head to Fitzroy being sure that we would find a solid feed.
Not knowing exactly what I felt like, I came across Umago on Zomato and was immediately drawn to the pics of the "Salmon Cutlet".... definitely a winner and will surely be back!
At no point did we feel rushed and the staff were amazing!

Chicken Roulade - 10/10
It's the simple things. Perfectly cooked chicken, amazing sauces with the bread for dipping. Call me basic but this place keeps me coming back!
Nothing to dislike about this place. Pizzas are extremely good value and of high quality. They also have a breakfast menu including Melbourne classics like Smashed Avo and an extensive salad list. It's a really cool place and kind of an interesting mix of ideas.
There's also a great vibe there in terms of clientele, with lots of migrants and refugees from the nearby community housing coming to have a pizza! So in the background you'll be hearing a variety of different languages and I think it gives a special feel to the place, like the way Melbourne should be.
Have just been back to umago it is probably to my detriment that I'm updating my review of this place as it will probably rise in price and will certainly increase in popularity.
We have been here a couple of times in the last fortnight and had confit of duck, rockling fillet, pork belly and a pizza . Main meals are $20 and pizza $14
All were superb. I defy anyone to find a hotel anywhere within a 20k radius to come close to this place on quality and price because you won't.
Even the vegetables and salad are creative not just s handful of salad mix with some dressing.
Keep up the good work guys you have a great concept.

Umago is a hit and miss place. Could be good one day and bad another, but service always seem to be slow. I usually get the steak, which sometimes doesn't get sent out to how you wanted it. The mushroom sauce and turkish bread that comes with it is bomb tho, especially if the bread is nice and warm.
"Chicken Roulade" and suddenly everyone knows what and where you're talking about. I've been here numerous times and always end up ordering their Chicken Roulade, except once where I opted for the Lamb Parcels (pic) which was decent. The chicken is quite dry but their to-die-for bread and sauce makes up for it. I could eat the bread and sauce alone as a meal! It's the main reason why I come back. Waiting for our meals (no matter what my partner and I order) usually takes about 30-40mins to come out. Service is decent- not overly great but not bad either.
My favourite place for mushroom sauce and the bread they use with the steak is nice and spongy, great for dipping. However the lack of service and lack of efficiency does make me angry though. But the mushroom sauce is well worth the wait.
Great service and was quite fast. I ordered a pizza and coke for only $10 and the pizza was cooked so fast (under 6 mins) and tastes amazing. Definately coming back. Also the people working and taking my order were super friendly and polite. A bit small inside. Even gave me add ons for free.
BEST for beef and salmon steak! Used to give huge portion, but now just decent. Good service. Good value for money. The place is busy but there's always a good spot for you.

Alarm bells generally ring when a restaurant serves a heap of different styles of food. This place has it all....steak, pasta, pizza and Mexican. Loved every time I visit.
Visited May 2016 as a walk in customer on a Saturday night. Service was good. 13yo said his Sml Gourmet 4 Meat Lover pizza was the best ever. 7yo fussy eater eat all of her Sml Margharita pizza, so it must have been good. My wife said Chicken Kebab was good but could have been better. I was impressed by my Chicken Roulade, which was bigger than I was expecting. BYO corkage $2pp. All up $62.70 and I'm glad I went and I recommend the place.
Vegetarian lasagne is out of this world! Actually all the pastas and lasagnes are. I haven't tried the pizza yet but look forward to it in the future. Amazing home cooked food seriously.
Good food - I can never decide between the steak and pasta, so my partner and I always order one of each and share. The best way to go - get the best of both worlds! The food is reasonably priced and the service is ok - nothing outstanding, but no complaints either.
Sneakers – we’ve been customers of Umago for 10 years now, and the food is great. I tend to order the gourmet Mexican pizza (now called Corn Chips), and a ham & cranberry gourmet pizza (that’s now been taken off the menu). I’ve also had their chicken parmas, the tandoori lamb pita, as well as some of their traditional pizzas. Find them to be really reasonably priced, especially for their location. They’re open late which is always a bonus.
Cassidy – I order the Smoked Salmon Pita every time, and love it. It’s such a big serving, the base is delicious. I like that they are open late and the turn around time for takeaways is generally very quick.

First time I had corn chips pizza and it's almost like a guacamole with a pizza base. And as for comfort food of gnocchi there isn't much I could comment. It's best for group dining with a few unfamiliar guests, for its very all round menu, for everybody. For this price I think it's a good portio！

Lovely restaurant with great service and food.
It's the second time of been here.
Contemplated on having a small Pizza from food envy (saw another table had pizza) for entree share.
We all agreed, had a Marghrita with double cheese. Oh now did it have cheese. So cheesy , it was delicious.
Ordered the Mediterranean Lamb Salad last time and it was so tender.
This time it was a little dry and tough although the flavours were there and the salad and balsamic dressing was amazing.
Mum had the Salmon cutlet, she said everything was nice but suggested they served the Salmon skin side facing upwards and crisp it, no sure why it was served the wrong side down, but it would've tasted better crispy skinned.
My partner had the Chicken Schnitzel ( which I didn't take a photo of,he was too hungry)
Peppercorn sauce was yummy as, Chicken Schnitzel was nicely crumbled with a fragrant herb and was very tender.
Drinks were cheaper than other places.
Dinner for 3 plus drinks was $73.
A bargain I must say.

I was very impressed with the unusually excellent Mexican Chicken I had last night. Very soft tortillas, a very generous serve, and not too pricey...I definitely recommend Cafe Umago....I'm looking forward to going back.

I went in there second time in 3days and I will admit I am in love with thier Eye fillet steak. Well done with sweet potato mash and mushroom sauce. Heavens. I ordered the same both times. I will order it again if I am going there. The food is reasonably priced and is good quality and taste. Management is friendly.👍😇👌
Friendly staff and the food is good. Looks to have had a change of management recently, the food is still great but it may not be the place to go for a quiet lunch with the music volume far too loud, which of course results in customers having to shout at each other. Perhaps the young staff place their entertainment above that of the customer.
The meat lover pizza made by them is really great and I end up buying the same pizza for a number of times. The price is reasonable and they provide good quality meat. But it was a total dissapointment when we ordered them over phone. The stafs were really rude. Other than that its a great place to have a pizzzzzzzza... Loved it 😊
Just had a great Supreme with anchovies. The crust was nice (I don't usually eat it, but I did this time) and they didn't charge or skimp on the anchovies. Garlic pizza was top notch too
