4.5. Excellent fried chicken, hot and fresh off the rack! Probably some of the best fried chicken I’ve had in Melbourne. The chicken is moist and tender, skin is deliciously marinated. Some of the skin had come off our chicken, but I was fine with this as I usually take the skin off my chicken anyway (and save the best till last). The crispy chicken burger was tasty, especially with the pickles, but there wasn't much mayo and we would've liked it a little more saucy. The loaded fries came with less gravy than I usually see, but I actually preferred this as it kept the chips slightly crispy whilst still having the gravy flavour. Loved the crispy bacon in it, and there was a perfect amount of cheese sauce. The housemade potato and gravy was delicious, the mash was creamy and full of potato goodness. The deep fried pickles were also brilliant. Love the crunchy long pickles perfectly crumbed and fried. Overall, a brilliant meal. Can't wait be back for more chicken! Highly recommend.
There’s no better place in Carlton to get your fried chicken fix at a good price! Even in these wEird Covid times my tip was that the Chef during initial lock downs was experimenting and working out how to master and perfect the fried chicken. Well I think he may have done it!
We had the whole bird at $29 a pop you really get a mean bird. I’m talking huge!! Weather it was loaded with steroids pre cook up this thing was wicked!
The crispy coating was exceptional and really puts it up there with other great fried chicken coops. Rated!

Doubled up the crispy fried chicken burger and added ranch. Chicken was perfectly cooked and combined perfectly with the mayo and ranch. Chips were crunchy and hot. However, I would get spicy chicken next time for more flavour and swap it into this burger.
Sonny’s is a great place for greasy but immensely satisfying burgers.
I got the “sonny’s burger” which basically is a lightly spiced, deep fried piece of chicken sandwiched in a brioche bun. The only condiment on this classic is mayo. The slaw (which I thought was a bit excessive) is evidently the only “healthy” addition here.
All of the burgers are accompanied by a generous portion of double (or maybe triple) fried chips. Definitely a great place for a burger, fries and beer combo!

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. I came zooming through Carlton and saw a sign for this place and my stomach grumbled. So found a park and went inside to order. Staff were so lovely. Great range of choices. Had the cheese burger. The bread wasn't doughy or too big - perfect size. Also added hot chips (not fries - chips!). Found it a tad dearer than I would normally spend but really, it was good. Very happy with the meal. Staff were patient as I perused the menu and assisted with what was on offer. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. As for parking? Be careful as it's limited in Carlton.
I saw a review that said the Curtin is a bit of a dive. Don’t get me wrong, it is but it’s not a bad thing coz a) dive bars are the best and b) it keeps out the shiny hipsters. Sonny’s is awesome. Delivery or eat in, I’ve never had a bad experience. The gravy on the mash is super flavoursome, the mac and cheese the perfect blend of cheeses, and the chicken divine. Had my first chicken burger recently and it was the best. Not sure how I’ll decide next time between a burger or white meat. The beef burgers are pretty darn good, too. I almost want to move back to the area so I’m within the Uber Eats delivery zone...

Had the eponymous burger - succulent brined chicken breast with a crunchy spiced bark, finely shredded slaw with green capsicum that added a lot to the flavour, nice soft bun, and a decent serve of beer battered chips on the side all for $13...cheeky beer...pretty happy right about now.
We ordered the white meat ( breast piece ) , the crispy chicken burger with fries and secret sauce. The chicken in the burger and on the side was absolutely delicious. It was flavourful , well cooked and completely filled up our appetites. The secret sauce was very spicy and delicious. I would confidently say this is one of the best burger and fried chicken joints in Victoria.

The chicken was unbelievable. Super super crispy, got a couple dipping sauces as well which went well with the chook. Maybe a side of pickles would improve the chook but can't complain at all! Back soon 4 sure
We came into Sonnys fried chicken for some burgers, we ordered the cheese burger ( for me bunless with lettuce) and a side of mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was good but was lacking a bit of flavour for my taste. The burgers however were very good, my patty was juicy and the sauces were perfectly portioned, I do wish I got to try some fried chicken as it is literally in the restaurant name. Guess it’s a good reason to come back ?
This is one of my favourite places to come for a burger, and I always get the cheeseburger with a chicken patty added. The size of the burger is amazing for the price and the flavour is incredible, plus you get chips with the burger. I highly recommend this place if you love a good burg.
Sonny makes one of the best fried chicken in Melbourne. It’s look like a bar but selling fried chicken burgers and pieces. Dark meats taste way better that origin recipe sold in kfc. It’s crispy and the meat inside is very tender。
Such delicious burgers and fries and they are so reasonably priced. Their chicken pieces also seem like very good cuts and not just pieces of fat.

If you are a chicken lover this place is worth the drive. Had a few sides and I must say the deep fried pickles were delicious. Also served potato and gravy which was an excellent addition that you don't see many places offering.
All in all a solid experience; I would return if I'm in the area. The only thing I must point out is the place is rather dingy and dark, we needed to use our phone lights while at our table to read the menu. Not a bad point but an fyi.
I really like the fried chickens here. They are crispy outside but juicy inside. Very fulfilling. We also chips with bacon and cheese. That's a bit greasy. Btw apple cider was fantastic
My partner and I LOVE fried chicken. We’ve tried 80% of the places on every “best fried chicken” list and are often left fairly disappointed. It seems like most places make it on there on the strength of their popularity rather than the strength of their food. But Sonny’s was incredible. Tender and flavourful meat, crispy and delicious crust. We had the spicy chicken burgers and the fried chicken. Both were amazing but we will come back for the fried chicken.

I seriously love the feel and decor - so different but at the same time very lively and perfect for a night out either if you’re just at the Bar forPre-drinks or looking for a good feed!

Sonny’s has one of the best chicken burgers I’ve ever had HANDS DOWN. Had the Sonny’s burger (which comes with fries and it’s only $13!) The brioche bun is amazing- soft on the inside, delightfully toasted and crisp on the outside. The chicken though was the star of the show. Superrrrrr moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside it’s definitely on a different scale to KFC. Spice level was perfect and I am definitely craving for more.
The place is a bit dark- usually what you’d expect from a pub but the service is great and the workers are super friendly. Definitely a place you’d want to check out!
The fried chicken is spoken of very highly in Melbourne's food scene so I was keen to check it out.
My visit coincided with their 1st birthday and had their signature fried chicken burger. Damn it was good, juicy moist chicken, very well flavoured, smoky, spicy and with heat.
The venue is very pub like, in fact there's a pub in there as well full of locals and uni students. I look forward to trying their fried chicken under less crazy circumstances.
Came here for the free burger for their birthday celebration and it was delicious. The brioche bun was just crunchy on the outside but so soft in the middle, and the fried chicken was crispy and juicy. The only downside was the slaw was too shredded (or there was just too much) so quite a bit fell out while I was trying to eat. But overall the burger was delicious and I’d definitely be willing to come back and pay for one.
The atmosphere in this restaurant is very cool, i thied the signature burger and is really amazing the chicken was juicy, tender, crispy and spice outside, the bun was so soft and in general this burger is amazing!
Visited Sonny's on their anniversary. They were giving out free chicken burgers. The sonny burger with fried chicken, slaw and mayo was delicious(yummmm..). It was pretty crowded and thus provided a very warm atmosphere.
Would definitely visit this place again for their burgers.

The Fried Chicken was great, not as juicy on the inside as I would've prefered but had an outer coating that I absolutely fell in love with! Crunchy and satisfying!
The bacon hit that perfect midpoint between crispy and soft.
The slaw was a great touch, fresh and zesty. I don't usually say I like salad in my burger, but damn did I like the salad in this burger! 😅
I added their special comeback sauce and holy hell was it good! Not exactly sure what the mix was but if I could get a bottle of it to take with me wherever I go I would be one happy doggo!

Sonny's is operating out of the @thecurtin hotel right at the start of Lygon street, really damn close to the city and honestly it's way too central to Melbourne for it not to be one of the biggest names in the burger industry! The food is superb with a very deep south style to it all. From the collard greens, deep fried pickles, Mac N cheese and the potato and gravy. Accompany this great food with a very cool laidback vibe and you've got yourself one great night! 🙌🏾

Initially came to Sonny's for a cheeseburger, a little research tells me I should also be sampling their fried chicken. I can only fit so much in one sitting so I opt for an extra crispy chicken fillet in my burger instead.
There was a small wait for the food, we came in close to opening time and already there were a couple tables filled up. Food came all at once and I tuck into the chips, crispy and golden, possibly beer battered as it had that distinct taste. The burger structurally didn't hold that well but the components were excellent. First bite into the thick chicken fillet was nice and succulent, it's buddy the beef patty was equally juicy and had a nice pink centre.
My friend who got a couple pieces of fried chicken (white meat) enjoyed his two piece feed and I was pretty envious as I wanted an unfiltered version of the bird. Note that the chicken pieces were large. Definitely on a mission to return to get my fried chicken fix, if the tray of fried chicken at the kitchen doesn't get you fixated I don't know what will! Also sampled some deep fried pickles, lovely crumbed and crispy.
Prices are pretty good considering all their burgers were served with fries and the add-ons were not that expensive either (an extra $3 for my fried chicken fillet). A spot I'm looking forward to frequenting!

It’s in a cosy little corner pub. Slightly unexpected and very unassuming. Walk in and you would feel immediately relaxed. There were three of us so we ordered The Whole Damn Chicken!, Load ‘em up fries, Mac & Cheese and Memphis Slaw. The food came on a tray and the chicken was freshly fried and looked absolutely scrumptious.
A bite of the chicken took me back to when I had my first taste of fried chicken that had 11 secret herbs and spices, but this was better! Crispier and juicier. So worth trying it with their signature hot sauce and barbecue sauce. The tangy hot sauce and the smokiness of the barbecue sauce went so well with the crispy yet juicy chicken.
The loaded fries hit the spot too. Very comforting. The gravy was a tad salty but it would pair perfectly with a cold cold beer! The slaw was fresh and crisp with a mayo dressing that I suspect is housemade. Perfectly balanced acidity and creaminess. The Mac and cheese was pretty good but I wasn’t a huge fan.
An all round two thumbs up experience! Would definitely go back when we have Fried chicken cravings!
In Carlton lives a place that is American themed and supplies some of the best burgers in Melbourne, if you're chasing a burger in my case I wanted a combination of two then this is the place to be, they're more like a bar but my god they know how to do their chicken, properly done fried chicken and definitely a stomach filler. Top place.
This restaurant is part of the Curtin bar, a well-known uni student oasis in Lygon St. The interior is as you expected, no frills, hipster-feel and relaxed. The fried chickens are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Same for the burger too. Loaded fries is hands down one of the best i tried before. Their gravy is thick instead of watery which makes the fries not as soggy as usual. Too bad the service is a little slow.
Staff were very friendly but took for while to meal to arrive. The chicken burger was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with just right amount of spiciness so it was worth the wait.
Food as amazing !!! Went here with my wife on Saturday day afternoon. First impression on walking in was a bit weird it was dark as and smelt like stale beer and wasn’t sure if we were in the right place. But after sussing it out we found we were. We ordered the loaded fries and let me tell you it was the best loaded fries I have ever had !!!!!!!!!!!! My wife ordered the chicken burger which was so juice and tender for fried chicken and I had the double with a piece of chicken it’s has to be in my top three burgers for sure !!!!!! Definitely recommend!!!!!!!!!
What can I say! A great burger made up of juicy beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles onion and burger sauce.
The patties were cooked light to medium and I enjoyed ever bite. The flavours were balanced so well and no ingredients were overpowering at all. A little bit of mustard goes a long way though. The salad was pretty fresh and the bun was deliciously buttery. Everything held up till the end and there was no mess. No bite was boring either, every last morsel was tasty.
The fries were good, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Mash could have been better, it was a little starchy. That could be down to the spuds though. Even cold the fries are good.
The service needs improving or I would have scored higher.
Tucked away at the back of the Curtin hotel in Carlton, this place is a hidden gem of the Melbourne burger scene. With prices resembling the 90’s (Think $13 for a burger with chips) already a big tick, but their burgers are next level. The beef is cooked great, but clearly the star here is the chicken. All I can say is AMAZING. Just get it and thank me later. As a bonus, all the sides are amazing, get them too!
The chips were genuinely the best I’ve ever had. They achieved the impossible of nice and crunchy and super soft on the inside. The chicken pulled apart as soon as you touched it and was very juicy and delicious! We went on a Tuesday at about 6pm, so the place was a little bit odd, very dark and dingy. Would be amazing on a Friday or Saturday night though!
Came here on a Saturday afternoon, upon arriving I wasn’t sure if they were open for meals upon they had a band playing which was really loud which was fine though no staff were around so I couldn’t ask anyone.
Though I was really feeling like some fried chicken so we sat down made ourselves comfortable and went to the bar where you will able to order, the food came out promptly and absolutely delicious!!!!
The chicken pieces tasted like KFC but much bigger, burgers were also great!!!
I’ll definitely return when I’m after another fried chicken feed.

Really impressed! Finally decided to head down and try Sonny's after hearing plenty of good things. I opted for a double cheeseburger and added a piece of spicy fried chicken inside, this was a great choice and a couple of extra pieces of fried chicken on the side. Chips are perfect, fried chicken reminds me of really good KFC and the beef was even good which I didn't expect being a mostly fried chicken place. It was above my expectations for sure. Can't wait to go back and try more of their sides

Sonny's Fried Chicken & Burgers is a treat.
Hidden inside the John Curtin Hotel with beaming red neon lights, it's easy to miss Sonny, if you're not looking for it. It's dark and ambient, perfect setting to jump in mouth first at the deliciousness on the menu.
We ordered the white meat breast crispy fried chicken, loaded fries with cheese sauce, gravy and crispy bacon, super creamy mac 'n' cheese with macaroni American and provolone cheese sauce with crispy breadcrumbs and Sonny's burger with spicy deep-fried chicken, zesty slaw and mayo.
This was a lot of food, but we wanted to try the usual suspects.
I couldn't fault the crispy fried chicken, they do it well. Tasty, crispy, juicy and had lust written all over it. The loaded fries were also worth the dip, tasty and loaded with sauce, but please take note chicken lovers, your burgers come with fries too, so don't overdo it on the fries son! The mac 'n' cheese was a surprise, they weren't dry and dull like most places these days, so if you're a fan of the good old mac 'n' cheese classic, you're in for some happy times.
The Sonny's burger was the real star. It's fresh, doesn't make you sleepy and completely satisfies you because it's a chicken burger done right. Perfect amount of sauce, tender chicken, right amount of crunch and it doesn't do too much that it overwhelms you. That's what I want from a chicken burger.
You must order at the bar, make note, it's not table service, and the wait time can be long, however, the staff were friendly and accommodating.
If you love KFC, then I highly recommend Sonny's Fried Chicken & Burgers, it's the next level, which means, it costs more. If I had to be critical, the chicken pieces and loaded fries are on the expensive side, but if you're rolling in the money, don't be shy, just go for it!

Cool atmosphere and great location. I had the crispy chicken burger and really enjoyed it. The chicken was lovely and crispy in the burger - really enjoyable! A nice serve of chips with each burger makes it a meal. Looking forward to visiting again in the future.
Delivers on it's promise: fried chicken, burgers, fries, and the like. The flavours and execution of the aforementioned foods is of the more authentic ilk, leaning toward the American style rather than any Aussie pineapple/beetroot stuff. Get ready for the pub atmosphere and the noise of the upstairs band room gigs if you're wanting to have a conversation with your dining companions. The separation of the dining room from the bar makes it more comfortable than some other "pop-up"-style food options at other pubs. I'll probably stick to some other places for my burger or fried chicken fix, but this place isn't a bad choice if you're in the mood.
Awesome burgers, fried chicken was cooked perfectly and was juicy without being watery and crunchy without being burnt. Ordered just about every side and the corn was just amazing. Not a big fan of the decor but with food that good does it really matter?! Will be returning very soon

I had the spicy fried chicken burg and the standard double beef and bacon i have everywhere and can say without a doubt, this place is definitely worth your time and money. All burgs come with fries so budget can be allocated to beer and maybe more burgers.
Funnily enough, I've only had the burgers here, not the chicken. I order from this place regularly via UberEats. They are consistently delicious which, if you order as many burgers as I do via delivery, you know is not always the case. Most places have off days, but I haven't had one yet here. The patty is juicy and not overcooked, the bun is fluffy, and the chips are always crisp -- no limp fries here. Massive fan of the sauce they put on the burgers, too. I have finally stopped burger delivery hopping!

Another day, another UberEATS order. This time from Sonny's as we heard good things about the fried chicken, and who doesn't love a delicious deep-fried birdy? Despite making the trek from Carlton to my place at Southbank, the fried chicken was still warm. Not sure why so many reviewers didn't like it, but I personally enjoyed the succulent and juicy chicken immensely. Even the white meat was moist. It was generously spiced and you're met with a burst of flavour each bite. The skin was thin and crispy. Nothing I could fault!
The sides where a mixture of hit and misses. The mac n cheese fared well with us, with its rich and creamy texture, and intense flavour. So did the still juicy and crispy deep fried pickle. The addition of blue cheese to the big wedge salad proved to be a hit with our tastebuds but the lack of bacon was annoying. However the worst was the biscuits and gravy. Wet and underdeveloped in the middle, dry and crumbly outside, and the gravy was too bland for words.
Still, we were glad we got our cravings for fried chicken satisfied, and we will stick to that from Sonny's next time.

Unfortunately didn't get a chance to tryout the chicken this time round. Guess I'll just have to go back for seconds! Had Stone and Wood on tap as well which never hurts!

The spicy fried chicken burger hits the spot every time. Plus all their burgers come with a side of fries (which in Melbourne is a total rarity for some reason). This place is reasonable and awesome. One of the best burgers and fried chicken I have had this year! Sonny's should be on everyone's to do list. Also available on UberEats if you are lucky enough to be in the zone.
I'll start off by saying the fried chicken was great. It had a real crunch and the portion size was generous. They offer hot sauce on each table which is always a bonus. The sauce was very spicy and addictive. The chicken burger was good also, different taste to other places but I enjoyed it.
Went here for lunch today - it was amazing! Ordered the sizzling fried chicken burger. Was steaming hot and served with fries, all for only $13! Vibe is an American roadhouse - simple yet stylish. Would return for sure.
Ok, so be warned, the pieces of chicken at Sonny’s are freakin huuuge! and yes we definitely over ordered. So as you can see, the chicken pieces at Sonny’s are massive. All the pieces come with bones, usually one big bone which makes it a bit easier to handle. It was all fresh and tasty. It resembled a bit of a KFC taste, nothing wrong with that. However one thing that didn’t sit well was the coating separated easily from the chicken and underneath that was the fatty skin just sitting there. Not the best of things to see but we still ate it all anyway.
Dropped by @sonnysfriedchickenandburgers to have a look at what the fuss had been and get our hands on this double cheesy and some fried chicken. The cheeseburger was surprisingly great! The beef was juicy and the combo between their sauces raw onion and pickles made it a boss eat!! Inside we didn’t expect much but blown away with the quality of everything in this burger!
I'm pretty impressed with this place. The old pub feel is really great and the layout of the food area is very American diner like.
Now for the food. The burger was amazing, a big crispy chicken fillet with coleslaw and a hint of spice. Think a good version of a zinger and that's what they give you. The fries are beer battered and the dipping sauce in this case Comeback sauce with hot and full of flavour.
We also had the white meat (breast) that was juicy and tender.
All in all a bloody good experiance and two thumbs up from me!

I am obsessed with fried chicken and Sonny's fried chicken taste just like all my favourite chicken joints in The States. Gus's fried chicken / Hot Chick / Blue Ribbon - I could go on.
FINALLY a place that sells succulent fried chicken on the bone in Melbourne. NO MORE TENDERS!

Love the Curtin and so happy they have opened Sonny's. I had the crispy chicken burger with a side of fries and mac 'n' cheese and everything was delicious. Tasty tender chicken, perfect crispy fries and old school mac 'n' cheese. Can't wait to try the fried chicken and other sides.
Always love a solid burger/fried chicken feed and this place certainly did not disappoint! It was KFC on steroids, the sizes of the wings and drumsticks were massive. The only downside was it was quite salty so was left feeling dehydrated quite fast but washing it down with beer helped. Their burgers were equally good as well as their sides. The blue cheese salad I loved! But thats because I love blue cheese in general. A good spot for a group of friends to get together and a great price tag.

Needed some refreshing from perfect italiano food and looked for a burger joint! Sonny's is a solution to that problemo. Felt a bit old at Sonny's, because average age was pretty much half of mine. Its not old style pub/bistro, its really American way made one. Nice food area looking like old American diners.
Got cheese burger with chips. Chips were really really yummy. Crispy and soft inside with nice flavour. Burger was real one... no offence to anyone, but no beetroot or any coriander added ;-) ... will have another burger here for sure. Reasonable prices too , pint and burger was $20!

Sonny's Fried Chicken & Burgers at The Curtin unveiled a new menu on Friday night. Their burgers are now accompanied by fried chicken plus all the fixins: potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, biscuits and gravy, smoky baked beans, collard greens, deep-fried pickles and more. This "super creamy mac 'n' cheese" well and truly lived up to its name, with the American and provolone cheese blend making for one of the richest, gooiest mac 'n' cheeses I've ever had.

Standard Saturday night browsing Uber eats with the miso soup looking for a new tasty burger to try. Came across sonnys burgers and couldn't find any info online except that they have a guest spot at the curtin.
We decided to take a punt, I got the chicken burger with bacon and the gf got the cheese burger. Both of the burgers came with fries.
To start with the chips were bloody perfect. That light crispy skin you crave before biting into a soft potato inside. Could not fault them at all and I'm quite fussy when fries aren't just right. Very well salted as well.
The burgers, wow, I was pretty blown away. My first thought biting into my fried chicken burger was "holy sh*t this is exactly how I imagine a KFC zinger burger should be based on the tv adverts." The brioche type bun was amazing, the fried chicken perfectly crisped while maintaining a moist inside and the perfect coating flavour. The bacon was a nice thickness and not overly cooked and the cheese and lettuce married together to make an outstanding burger overall. Honestly could be the best fried chicken burger I've had in melbourne (and I bloody love trying fried chicken burgers)
Had a bite of the girlfriends cheese burger and again my first thought was "god damn if this isn't exactly what an advert hungry jacks whopper should taste like". Delicious meat, cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and sauce all wrapped in another lovely bun.
Safe to say I was very impressed with this punt and will be having another one of these when I'm allowed to be a pig again. Hope they get their own burger joint at some point because these babies will sell like hot cakes.
