Has been my go-to place for affordable high-quality sushi. Big fan of the platters. Highly recommended.
Going through a bit of a sushi eating phase at the moment and grilled salmon is one of my faves, it definitely benefits from being freshly made though as the flavour is more enhanced when it’s hot. Tasty enough regardless
Recently discovered this place and have been coming pretty regularly since! Fantastic little place for a cheap and satisfying lunch. I love their teriyaki sauce. Their bento boxes are perfect you get a good selection of everything for a reasonable price with the portions decent without being too much. Also tried the Japanese curry and the unagi dons both delicious! Their sushi and sashimi always tastes fresh. Definitely recommend this place!
For the price it’s the best bang for your buck sushi in Melbourne. This place along with sushi monger are the best places if you’re not looking to drop stacks. The rolls are less traditional and uniquely delicious. Recommend for a quick bite
The reviews here don't do this place justice.
The sushi and sashimi at sushi chef are authentic, you won't find chopped up carrot and lettuce like some places in the city.
The fish is always fresh and they have good portions and variety.
Hidden gem! Always super fresh and delicious. I love the salmon and the chicken curry bento. It’s priced really well too. Unable to fault them
Picked up a sushi/sashimi platter last night from the Sushi Chef in Sth Melbourne. This a small but authentic Japanese takeaway/cafe who make dishes fresh to order and quality is always excellent. Salmon and Tuna sashimi were are standout on the platter, exceptionally fresh!!!!
It’s not the most authentic tasting Japanese offerings out there, but Sushi Chef does an acceptable job for a lunchtime fix. As a busy man, I went for the takeaway bento box which I spent a good half an hour photographing at my desk. I went with the mami chicken and requested some vegetarian items (though that doesn’t quite explain the prawn). Wait was a little longer than I would have liked but I probably unlucked out, as a table was seated before me.
Fantastic sushi made to order. Always a delight to eat. Friendly staff and always refreshing when you can pay by card. Highly recommended. 👍👍👍
I have going to this place for years, no.27 and a miso. Although the original owner has move on its still of the same high quality. After eating here you will not put up with that terrible food court sushi ever again.
Pretty decent. Been a few times over the years, despite I think change of owners (?) has always been pretty good. Tonight we had unagi, tamago and a salmon etc sushi - as it is made to order fresh it isn't as cheap as some but it is worth it. Quality food - and much better than the Salon De Sushi just up the street who do tiny sushi that isn't that tasty. Recommended.
Little Japanese sushi place tucked away in the quiet city end of Clarendon St. Friendly smiling staff and fresh sushi at reasonable prices. The handrolls are yumtastic. Busy at lunchtime, but there's also a small area to eat in too.
Decent sushi, affordable price. Small tidy restaurant, very friendly and helpful staff. We went there for lunch and shared a sushi platter for two. The sushi were fresh, very tasty and reasonably priced. Overall a very pleasant experience, I would recommend this place for lunch or casual dinner.

Freshest Sushi in Melbourne. I cannot believe the quality of the fish! I've been to many japenese, sushi speciality restaurants and have never experienced the freshness and quality that you recieve at Sushi Chef. I arrange the catering and events for my company and always utilise these guys. Will impress the fussiest eaters!
Great fish even better RICE. Great value.
The only sushi I eat. I'm a regular at Sushi Chef after recently moving to the area. The sushi is awesome. The rolls are much bigger than your typical sushi bar and they're full of taste (not just packed with rice).
The staff are friendly and the food is made fresh, not like most sushi bars. I would definately recommend Sushi Chef to anyone and I'll continue to be a regular.
Best Sushi in Melbourne. Granted, the shop itself isn't anything to gasp about, it's very simple, small and low key but I must say they serve up the best and most fresh sushi in melbourne. I have never been disappointed and they are consistently good. I love their Maki mix platters, excellent for get togethers or a big binge session. The staff are ever so friendly, especially Jenny who I think is the owner. It's hard to find better tasting sushi, but go for the food, not the venue. I usually take away.
Sushi Chef's sushi is awesome. Been there many times, always get fresh sushi. I recommend the Salmon Roll there.
Fantastic sushi that is made to order.
This place has obviously modeled itself off the famous Suzuran in Camberwell. While not as good, it still serves up great sushi, decently priced and in a good take away atmosphere. It's location is also a bonus as there is not any decently priced sushi in the area as they are all located in expensive restaurants. I go here on a regular basis.
I'm not a regular customer but recently dropped in here for the first time for lunch. I tried the sushi/sashimi platter and enjoyed it. The Salmon and Tuna sashimi was very fresh and delicious, and to boot, very reasonably priced. The staff is super friendly and efficient. All round, Sushi Chef is great value for a fast food meal.
Excellent Japanese food on Clarendon St. Chicken and fish tasted fresh and the wasabi shot out of my head :). Lots of sushi options as well apart from the delicious curries and don
Really beautiful quality seafoods with reasonable price!!!! Rolls are thick with ingredients and sashimi pieces are tick as well. The best Japanese experience in Melbourne when comparing price per both qlt/qty.
had this aburi salmon a couple days ago. good portion and absolutely fresh made. worth the wait and price 👌🏼
Excellent quality sushi at reasonable prices. The Maki rolls are packed with fish (not rice) and well worth the price. Hand rolls are also very good.
Highly recommended
Sushi Chef's sushi has to be some of the best in South Melbourne. I've been a regular customer for a while.
Their quality is fantastic and pretty reasonably priced. They do phone ordering so you can order then pick it up.
Highly recommended for the sushi lover.
