Second time dining at Capitano and it was even better than the first. For starters we had the whipped anchovy and the buffalo milk ricotta. Both were amazing. For mains we had the double roni pizza and rigatoncini with vodka sauce. Couldn’t fault them. Service was friendly and attentive. Can’t wait to go back.
My go-to on Wednesday night date night. There was a period of time where my partner and I were visiting this place weekly. Service is incredible. Food is incredible. Drinks are incredible! Fit out is incredible! I love capitano
Very attentive service. Beautiful traditional Italian food made lovingly. Reminds me of my Nonna’s cooking, will def be back! 💕
Amazing food as always! My second time here and the service and food has always been A+. A must get is the classic pizza and the vodka sauce pasta!!!
Caught up with a friend here recently. Have been wanting to try since they opened. We made a reservation and lucky we did as it has a small dining room which makes for an intimate space. Food menu was small and a little odd, but we went with 2 pizzas that were simple but full of flavor. The place got very noisy so it became hard to hear. Everything was great, but I ordered a glass of wine and for a $12 Victorian wine, was very small. Cute place, but definitely make a reservation. I also did find it odd that they required a credit card for the reservation.
On a winters evening, this locale had a good vibe and was nice and warm. The service was quick and attentive, which i appreciate. The principle reason to come is to try the New York style pizzas, and they measured up very well. On the evening I went, they had a clam pizza on the specials list, which had fantastic flavour and a very nice base. The grandma pie was also very good, and it’s good to see a liberal amount of passata used. I think if they added a Chicago style pizza pie on the menu, it would top it off nicely. The Anelli pasta dish was nice, though I’d suggest a touch too salty. Good texture of pasta, ragu was fine, The tiramisu to finish was very nice, very generous portion, and the addition of walnuts was a good touch. I’d recommend this place for a meal, and next time I’ll give the veal parmigiana on the bone a go.
New York pizza style! One of the best pizza place in Melbourne. The meat balls are so tasty. If you are coming early, you could just walk in, otherwise best for you to make a booking. Drinks are great too. Been here few times already! Highly recommended
This place is sooooooooo yummy. I love the bar seating for getting seated a bit faster. I've been several times and it always delivers, I feel like I end up practically licking my plate every time. Cocktails are great too.
I am soooo pleased to ya e discovered this place. We visited on the weekend to get our first taste of their pizza and it did not disappoint. The pepperoni pizza was just delicious and the green salad with anchovy dressing was sensational. I never order anything with anchovies but was assured it would not be overwhelming. So glad I tried it. We also had some grilled peppers with fermented tomato vinegar sauce and I had a slice of the thick square pizza. Everything was brilliant!!
I cannot wait to go back and try more of the menu especially the Parma.
Great food and flavours had to have the veal parmigiana surprised it was not that large for the $65.00 price tag. Tiramisu was very tasty . Wait staff very helpful and professional.
Noise level a problem and felt a little bit cramped. Not sure of the layout of room with the partition in the middle of the room separating the bar from diners.
Overall very nice but probably won't return but would recommend to others.
Went tonight and must say have been to a lot of Italian places in Melbourne that I thoroughly enjoyed. They all have their similarities but this place certainly stands out from the crowd when it comes to pizza. The base was thicker and for the first time I found myself using my hands. It is so crunchy and with the great quality toppings you just want to keep eating it. Sour dough base I believe. We had the pepperoni and also a tomato pie
pizza. Delicious!
We had a couple of pastas to share as well and the one with the vodka in the tomato and cream sauce was probably the best pasta I have ever had!!!
Tiramisu and coffee was right up there too.
The service was friendly with the staff very engaging and very knowledgeable with the food and wine.
Thank you guys can’t wait to come back.
Food menu was small but good. So you did not spend too much time deciding what you want and you can spend more time enjoying the food!
I ordered CHITTARA with clams and my friend
GRILLED ZUCCHINI pizza.
I really wanted SQUID INK MACARONI with mussels, cuttlefish & leek but they were unable to do the dish without dairy. 🙁
Both dishes were great. The pasta was cooked just right and the sauce was light & favourable. The pizza had a thin base and tasted great.
To compliment the good food, Service was friendly and efficient.
Definitely Worth a repeat visit.
Cute little Italian restaurant with tasty traditional style menu. A large group of us went for dinner and opted for the banquet option for $35 per person. So much food! We started with phenomenal garlic bread, charcuterie, olives, sweet and sour peppers and grilled asparagus with lemon ricotta. Then we moved on to pizzas- we had the mushroom and the cheese pizzas. Both tasty. Then next course was meatballs in tomato sugo and shaved broccoli salad. Then we finished off the meal with tiramisu. I was really impressed with all the food. Highlights for me were the asparagus, meatballs and the garlic bread. the restaurant also did a great job catering for the dietary requirements amongst us. And be sure to sample the spritz menu .
Gorgeous place, excellent pizza, mushroom and taleggio a highlight. Tiramisu was delicious. Great drinks list. Good service. Wonderful place to enjoy a meal and drinks. Will return. Highly recommend.
Absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend! The caponata was so fresh and the mushroom and teleggio pizza was so good. Will definitely be back

Stumbled across 'Capitano' after an appointment close by. We were lucky enough to be seated but I would recommend booking.
We had the pepperoni pizza and the special deep dish pizza. The pepperoni was traditions wildfire pizza and was delicious. The deep dish was not my personal preference but hubby loved it.
Had a great lunch at Capitano, great fit out, delicious pizza and the BEST tiramisu. Service was also excellent, what’s not to love! Go there!
Tried Capitano last night. The pizza was phenomenal. When was the last time you had a pizza good enough to rave about? You'll find one here. The service was a little underwhelming, and the pasta didn't rock my world but I'll be back for the pizza.
Carlton has always been the Daddy of Italian Food in Melbourne, but 2018 has seen some hip swinging, rock and roll listening younger brothers join the age old patriarchy. At Capitano, pizza is "pie", vodka sauce pasta is a standout and the spritz is back in a big way. It all feels very relevant without ever stepping into the cliche. Which makes this American infused Italian a great date night restaurant.
Do yourself a favour and bolster your order of the staples with a selection of the specials; these were some of our favourite dishes of the night.
You all want to know how good the pizza is though, and believe me, it is good: toppings are rich and flavourful and there is a fantastic ferment in the dough. Picking up a slice, there is some fair flop in the middle whilst the crust holds its own, meaning whether you're a pizza-folder or a cutlery-user you're satisfied.
All in all, despite being just a few weeks old at the time of our visit, Capitano already seemed like it had been pleasing diners for forever. As you would expect from the makers of Bar liberty, there's a great selection of drinks to keep you coming back all times of the day and I am confident their menu will continue to refine. The one complaint - how surprisingly fast the room cleared on a wet and windy night!
Boom. Got the formula right here. Great space, music, food and drinks at fair prices. Tasted much of the menu and it was delicious. Service a little awkward and salty, but a minor gripe in what was a must enjoyable meal.
The great thing about the Liberty crew is you don't have to worry about whether their new restaurant is going to be good, it just is. And it is. It's fantastic.
We ate in the first sitting Saturday night and it was busy, but running like clockwork which is awesome given it's still in it's first month trading.
We started with the grapefruit americano and the fantastico aparatifs, both spot on, and were out in about 3 minutes (I hate waiting ages for cocktails).
Had charcuterie to start, then the cheese pizza which was deliciously chewy and cheesy, we chose not to do any adds. Love the char on the crust and the tomato sauce.
Then we shared the vesuvio pasta, a casaracce (or similar) with a vodka sauce. This was probably the highlight. There's so much skill to this plate of food. Punchy flavours without any of them being overdone.
We shared the tiramisu for dessert which was again tops. By this stage we had moved up the bar as our table was rebooked for 8pm, and the bartender gave us house-made limoncello to round off the Italian classic. (*try the limoncello)
Service was perfect, there when we needed and not when we didn't, really helpful with wine, and seemingly unflustered by how busy it was.
Wine list is great, and super affordable. We moved on to the sangiovese and nebiolo which were perfect. Highly recommend both.
Great job Capitano. We'll be back. Sooner than later.
Capitano is the latest restaurant from Banjo Harris Plane, Casey Wall, Manu Potoi and Michael Bascetta, who between them have involvement in popular Melbourne food and drink spots Rockwell & Sons, Above Board and Bar Liberty.
A small menu. The pizza with broad bean shoots was terrific, the pizza with fennel and sausage so-so (both had great, slightly charred, chewy crust). The pasta with vodka was very good and the wine list has some really interesting wines by the glass. Service was professional and friendly and the atmosphere very civilised. Overall, a good place.
Capitano is a pub-like atmosphere which is fantastic as it makes this Italian restaurant just feel joyful. Service here is friendly and fun, although as they get busy it can be a little wait at times. The food here is delicious! The deep dish pizzas are a treat and their gluten free option is amazing! The sides and appetizers are also beautiful, fresh and great flavours that hit all the right notes. The wine list is good too and the staff will direct you if needed and know their stuff. Great place for good food and catch up with friends
This place is absolutely fantastic. Everything is of outstanding quality - bread, pizzas and pastas. I was so impressed with the meal. You do have to wait a while for food to come out but it is definitely worth it. I will come back here without a doubt.
Lovely Italian food and a great atmosphere. Zoe was personable and prompt with looking after our table. My wine friends seemed impressed with the selection and do not skip on the bread!
Such a superb experience at this restaurant. Welcoming and friendly staff on top of delicious food and drinks.
My friend and I shared a pasta and a pizza. The pasta was deliciously Moorish and I am so glad we ordered the vodka dipping sauce for the pizza crust. It is a fantastic idea and I absolutely loved it. I cannot wait to come again and try a square with a group of friends.
Beautiful place to have pizza and a drink. It's a lovely place to chill, with a fantastic drinks list and friendly staff. We always go for a square pizza (Grandma) and it is super super filling. Tastes kind of like a thick and chewy sourdough base, balanced out with a generous serve of sauce and cheese. The pastas are just okay. Come for the pizza, drinks and vibe! The burrata looks amazing.
First time going to Capitano and I had heard a lot of good things. The interior is gorgeous and it has a lovely ambience. The staff were all amazing and had great suggestions about the wine. We ordered one pasta with duck that was so good, and then the vodka pasta. I was a little disappointed with that one as it didn’t taste quite like a traditional vodka pasta dish. It was quite heavy; reminded me of pumpkin soup and was hard to get through it all. Probably wouldn’t order it again. Overall really good though and I’ll definitely be back, probably for the burrata and the service!
This is going to be one of my pizza restaurants in Melbourne from now on. We dined in and shared a Nicola, Leonardo and a Tomato Pie among the three of us and we all enjoyed them all. Staff is really nice. 🍕
The sort of place that you just can’t go wrong at - because everything is so delicious.
Cocktails, starters, good friends, great food. It’s the best combination. We came mid afternoon during their limited menu, and in no way did this home us back! Vibe and service were both perfect, and food was so good. It felt like we tried everything on offer, but my highlights would be: fried mozz and focaccia, and then 4 cheese and roni square pies. That said, there was 4 of us and we each ordered a different square pie and it was the perfect afternoon. Lots of sharing amongst us and leftovers for the next day.
