Review The Duke Of Wellington - Melbourne

Mel
First time visiting this place. The decor inside is very nice and interesting to look at. It doesn't have that dirty old beer pub smell which was really nice for a change. The premises and toilets were clean. There are three levels, which at first we found a bit confusing of where we were meant to be going to eat. We were pleasantly surprised by the food. My favourite was the Halloumi dish, amazing!! I also had the gnocchi which was good and chicken pieces which were moist and full of flavour. We were able to order from our table which was nice not to have to get up and figure out who and how to split the bill. Food came out pretty quickly which was good. I don't drink, but had a lemon lime bitters which was on point. My friends enjoyed the alcohol a lot!! Most of the staff were really nice, one person I am hoping was just having a rough night!

Nice British style pub. Prices are reasonable and the food quality was decent too! Service is pretty quick even at busy times.

A totally Aussie laid back atmosphere, replete with sports channels and great food to accompany. A must visit for a leisurely few hours, when in Melbourne.

Went to Duke for dinner last night. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, clean premises. We had the classic parmi, chicken strips and the Haloumi. The food was excellent, chicken strips were tender, the parmi was fantastic and the haloumi was full of flavour. Could not recommend the haloumi any higher. Great location and a nice lil hideaway spot to meet friends.

A great atmosphere; busy and vibrant. The footy was on the big screens in the bistro, so catered for all. Drinks and meals were a little pricey for a pub but they were good. One was a little cold for Karen though 😜 We were a table of 10 and ordered through the Mr Yum app, but table service was offered too. Ricardo and Maggie were fabulous and very attentive. Ricardo brought out our birthday celebration at just the right time and they provided cakes/spoons which was great. I booked the table online which was easy. I have been here a couple of times before (for different events) and it’s always great. The rooftop is beautiful. I highly recommend The Duke.

The entree was delicious everything else was cold or overdone. Expensive for the quality only go if everywhere else is booked or you are going just for the kiev bites.

The food was great - easy to order , the staff were friendly and accommodating. Great vegan options is always a plus đŸ€©

There aren't many places in the CBD where I feel confident taking the kids for dinner but this one was a winner. Good kids menu, good grown-up menu, great variety of drinks. Lots of space split across multiple levels. Good ambient noise. Service was quick and responsive.

Love visiting the Duke, a great atmosphere especially for private events and in springtime! A little overpriced but good food. Will visit again!

Lovely little rooftop bar. Due to covid, things had to be done a little differently, such as booking ahead, leaving our contact details at the door, separate booths and contactless ordering of food and drinks. The ambience is intimate yet fun, and the food was so far so good. I ordered a calamari side which came with ranch dressing. I definitely want to come back to try more food, the parma was huge and looked amazing!<br/><br/>Side note, the service was impeccable. Even though social distancing was the order of the day, the staff were still friendly and attentive. One waitress even offered to take photos for us and sent them to our phones directly from her. She went above and beyond to make sure that we enjoyed our time there, and that little touch is why I'm giving five stars without having tried most of the menu yet.

Service is great and there's a good range of drinks on offer. I've been here a few times and I'm always disappointed by the food. It arrives quickly but it's cold to lukewarm, overly salty, and the fries are sad, soggy and undercooked. I think this was the last time I will dine here.

I used to come to the Duke on a Friday for after work drinks, I enjoyed it back then and I enjoyed my visit here recently too.<br/><br/>The bar has different levels, we were seating at the top bar which was nice and comfortable.<br/><br/>A great selection of tap beer, my beer went down a treat being on such a hot day. I ordered the Duke cheeseburger which was really tasty! I loved everything about this burger and fries were very nice too.<br/><br/>A great spot to come for either a bite or drink, we had such a lovely time.

Enormous parma good to fit 3 people! Other foods are ok. Great variety of craft beers and a nice rooftop bar to chillout and have a chat with colleagues.

Really bad parma, really bad chips, really bad salad. We came to Duke before a gig at the Forum due to the convenient location. We should have done ourselves a favour, been less lazy, and gone anywhere else to eat. We ordered 2 x parma’s, one petite, one regular - and they were awful. How hard is it to freshly cook a meal which is mainly deep fried? The chicken schnitzel was oily and barely warm, the grilled cheese was thick, rubbery and cold, the frozen crinkle cut chips were undercooked, unseasoned and cold as well. If the meals had taken ages to arrive we could at least understand them no longer being hot, but they took under 10 minutes to arrive from when we ordered. The salad wasn’t even tossed, and had a minuscule drizzle of dressing on a couple of leaves, making it pretty unappealing. Whoever was responsible for these meals coming out of the kitchen is clearly in the wrong profession.

Fab rooftop bar in the city. Fun vibes, good music, delicious bar snacks and drinks. Lasagne croquettes !!!!! Get in my belly. We’ve had lots of good times here... always good for a few drinks, snacks and then a little boogie on the dance floor.

We called into the Duke last night for a few drinks ahead of seeing a concert at the Forum. It was packed but we found a table upstairs in the wine bar area which is a much nicer spot than downstairs anyway. G&T’s were strong and there was a great selection of gin to boot. I’ve eaten here before and enjoyed the food but have previously found the service a little clunky with timings. That was over a year ago so thing may have improved.

First off..... this is my new favourite place to meet up with friends. Three levels including rooftop. However I wish they would up their game with the food. Have eaten there 3 times... below par. $27 club sandwich with a huge portion of crinkle cut frozen chips. Menu ok normal pub grub but the quality is poor. Fish and chips....2 portions of fried fish with another serve of crinkle cut chips. Wish it was better. Also ,the unisex toilets dimly lit, a little confusing and quite smelly and messy. This has been the same in each Occassion.

A warm and friendly pub, in a great corner location in the CBD, The Duke is a good spot for a few after work drinks, or a catch up with friends. It has a nice fitout, with large open spaces and comfortable seating. We never have had a problem being served, and it's often quite busy; so the staff are great.<br/><br/>The dining room also looks good, but we've only ever been here for drinks. The menu does sound delicious though, so we will have to come back to try the food. From my experience, the Duke is a cool spot for some drinks with friends, and we've always enjoyed our time here.

Myself and 3 other corporate professionals came for Friday after work food and drinks. We were quietly nestled in a corner for 2 hours, our food had just arrived when we were approached and asked to vacate within 45min as someone had called up and booked the table. We told the staff that our food had only just arrived and that there was no reserved sign on the table, therefore why were we being told to move within 45min. The staff then said in a very condescending tone &quot;sorry but i&#039;m giving you 45min notice that should be enough&quot;. We were all extremely appalled by the staff&#039;s behaviour and by this request to vacate. It was extremely unprofessional and inhospitable as customers who were buying food and drinks (when our food had only just arrived). I asked to speak to the person in charge to which he said he was and he can make this decision.<br/><br/>Extremely unprofessional that the manger would act in this way and completely disrespectful to paying customers.

A place with great atmosphere and perfect to hang with friends after work. I've only ever ordered drinks from this place and they were all good so five stars for me. I usually order a lemon lime bitters as I don't drink.

Rooftop bar staff are super friendly, made sure I would enjoy my drink and catered to my needs to ensure a pleasant wine experience.<br/>Food was good.

Unfortunately my party of three were disappointed with the quality of our meals. My salad was drenched in wasabi dressing which unfortunately overpowered the entire salad. Another meal was extremely and unnecessarily salty, again, not able to be finished. The third meal was the mushroom tortellini - which was very nice. On the whole, the service was nice and they gave us a refund for the salty dish. This top service and positive response is the number one reason we will return again later in the year to try again. Toilets were clear, ambience is nice and the location is fabulous.

Been here a bunch of times over the years. The last time I went wasn’t long ago but I’m currently not drinking because I need a break from alcohol for a while. so far done 3 months and not sure how long I’ll keep going. Great place to just like chill and chat with friends and the food is nice too.

Came here for a work lunch, and I went for the standard pub option (i.e. the chicken Parma). Serving size was generous and overall pretty tasty. Good vibes, will definitely be back.

The Duke of Wellington is a popular pub located in the heart of Melbourne. However, I’m going to cut right to the headliner.. the main event. <br/><br/>We visited The Duke for one sole purpose. To try the “Larmigiana”. <br/><br/>The Duke has combined two of our all time favourite dishes. A Chicken Parmigiana and a cheesy Lasagne. <br/><br/>Sounds like heaven? It was. It lived up to expectation, and more. <br/><br/>The crumbed chicken is layered with all your traditional toppings, but then comes the ‘goodness’. The sheet of lasagne followed by sauce and oozy cheese. If that isn’t enough on it’s own.. The dish also comes with a side of well seasoned crispy chips, and a small garden salad. <br/><br/>Easily would recommend not only this pub, but this meal. As a major food lover - I don’t say this lightly, but this dining experience is one I will never forget.
The New Fave
Is it a parma, is it a lasagna, no....it's a Lamargiana.  That's right, The Duke of Wellington on Flinders Street in Melbourne serves up a classic Aussie parma topped with lasagna.  But before we get to this Aussie/Italian creation, first to the venue. Melbourne's iconic Duke of Wellington is spread upon three levels - a casual bar at the bottom, a restaurant in the middle and a rooftop bar at the top.
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
Really like the atmostphere here just perfect for Friday night after work! They have so many spaces both outdoor indoor. We had some drinks and a bowl of chips which was delish! The staff were nice and friendly.
Long Black With Cinnamon
Great location, friendly staff, multiple floors with various venue spaces with different vibes - the wine room is particularly elegant but relaxed. Lunch had big servings for salads but those who had parmas were left hungry...all meals were subpar and thus overpriced. Maybe snack menu is better.
Lisa Nguyen
After hearing they serve lasagna on top of a Parma, I had to give this place a try!<br/>We ordered the larmagiana, lasagna croquettes and the scallops.<br/>The scallops I wasn't too fond of as I felt there was too much sauce and that's all I could taste.<br/>The larmagiana was unfortunately over seasoned which made it difficult to eat. The Napoli sauce and lasagna topping were too salty to enjoy. Chips were cooked well and salad was well dressed.<br/>The lasagna croquettes were the highlight of the meal, perfectly seasoned and perfect with a cold beverage! The lasagna was well cooked, the crumb was crunchy and golden and the aioli sauce was a great addition.<br/>Will definitely come back to give the larmagiana a second try!
Chris
Great place. Great range of beers and wine with a solid bar menu. Prices are on par with inner Melbourne spots. The roof top is a great environment for drinks and food. Service is also on the money. Recommended for meet ups or just for an ale or three.

2.5/5. Disappointed with our meal here last night. Overall it’s a great venue and the rooftop is awesome so I’ll definitely be back for drinks but the Parma was very average. <br/>It was big which is a plus but it was only warm rather than piping hot and for me the biggest let down were the chips. I was looking forward to some crispy, crunchy, golden crinkle-cut chips but unfortunately these were not that. <br/>There were a lot of them but they too were only luke warm. Sadly they were pale and soggy and in need of some more love in the fryer. Bad chips are a bugbear of mine and unfortunately very common for such a simple thing. I’d happily wait longer for my meal to see the humble potato done justice! <br/>It was very busy for a Tuesday night so maybe they were unprepared but really, a Parma and chips is such a pub standard that a good one any night of the week shouldn’t be too much to ask for, especially for $26...
Elise Barriball
Nice pub, friendly staff and good beers on tap. Unfortunately the food was a huge let down. The chips were soggy and so was the parma, salad was barely dressed. Overall a good venue though
Oj_always_eating
I love it at the Duke - always a really cool pumping atmosphere! Perfect place for an after work drink on Friday with a bowl of chips (which are DELICIOUS). I love that they serve Domain Chandon sparkling by the glass. Downstairs is cool like a typical pub, on level 1 is a nice restaurant and then the rooftop on level 2 is more of a social/party vibe! Plenty of TVs to watch the footy. Excellent venue in a good location!
Hungry For Chips
Came here for food and drinks just before the game at the G. The rooftop is refreshly renovated and the place was pumping. Probably wasn’t the most ideal venue for what we were after as the music was too loud and the lighting was too dark. Our own fault! Highlights: do check out the rooftop, well laid out and very spacious. Lowlights: try to go for drinks only. The snacks was not a standout.

3.5/5 <br/>I went here for drinks on Friday night. This place was packed, it was really noisy but that’s to be expected w a city pub. <br/><br/>The service was good, and they had a good selection of beers and spirits. The prices weren’t cheap, my pints cost $13 each. <br/><br/>There were plenty of tele’s w sport playing. There is a rooftop bar but it was packed so I stayed downstairs. <br/><br/>Overall it was a reasonable pub to visit.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Sweet potato fries<br/><br/>Came here with some colleagues for dinner and was a little disappointed with taste of the food. Just needed to amp up the flavors and prices are above average for what you get. I had the cod chowder dish that was light on seasoning and a little bland. Service was also a little slow although the place was packed. On the positive side, the sweet potato fries were great (crunchy, moorish and delicious), and the ambience and space was great. Just need to mark up the food a little.
Gwen Kwan
Nice place to watch footy with my gang and Friday drinks. Always packed when there is game on, it is relatively relaxing after the game. Figure foods are tasty, love the fries and calamari.
Linda
The staff and ambience in the venue is awesome! I’ve been here for drinks and snacks and it was really good. However I ate here for dinner and was underwhelmed. The portion sizes are huge! And the prices are on a bit more of the expensive size when compared to other places, but price for food quality is not worth the money. Taste is a little bland too. I’ll go again 100% for snacks and drinks though.
Gin
This place is absolutely bursting one minute, and dead calm the next. Being in close proximity to the MCG, the Tennis Centre and the rectangular stadium, the crowd ebbs and flows with the timekeepers' announcements. The pub itself is well-geared to catering to large groups, though when it's full of boozy punters hopped up on blind optimism you won't hear yourself think. Standard steak & chips (with pepper sauce) appears in minutes. Decent sized serve, and not a bad steak for the price. High volume, low fuss casual dining done well.
Happiness.is.food
I organised The Duke for a team break-up lunch.  Venue was great in accommodating 10 people and the staff were lovely.  Unfortunately, the meals left us very disappointed.  I ordered the chicken burger, which was a piece of fried chicken with cheese melted ontop but the cheese looked as though it had been sitting on the chicken for quite a while and had gone hard again.  The bacon was two very thin and long strips.  Quite frankly, it was an embarrassing attempt at a burger and for $24 I was very disappointed.  Others had the steak which they said was quite tough and couldn't finish it.  I would come back for a drink but definitely do not recommend the food.
Adam Wenzel
Great selection of beers on tap and great place for drinks. However the food is terrible they have really let this part of the place go.....
Hannah Leong
Came here at 9am with a group of friends for breakfast, wasn’t impressed that we weren’t told which sections were being served for breakfast as we had to move again later on. <br/>The waiter was friendly, at least. <br/>Feedback on the truffle omelette is that they could cut down on the salt. I think they just piled up on the salt whilst forgetting that cheese is already salty enough. <br/>Other than that, everything was alright.
Split The Bill
Pub is nice and bright with comfy seating. We had a private function room with great seating.  But the food was not so great my steak was tough and fries were only luke warm.<br/>I would only recommend this place for drinks as the service was great too.
The Gastronaut
The great thing about this bar is their collection of beers. Also the location is perfect to get some seating preferences. The service is also friendly.
Genevieve
Best veggie burger in Melbourne! Love the spicy lentil burger, and the avo & mango salad is really fresh tasting & super filling. Level 1 is really nice for dinner & drinks and the service is always really friendly.
Gintaute Gataveckaite
Me and a group of friends came here for dinner and a drink before heading off to a gig.<br/>I've been here a while ago and food and atmosphere were fantastic so thought everyone will love it.<br/>There was 7 of us. We ordered steaks and burgers at the same time with the same bartender. Half of us had to wait for their food for almost an hour while others finished their steaks and burgers. And it was just a Tuesday. Sauces for steaks were wrong. One of the steaks came completely burnt (was meant to be medium to well-done). Pork burger had bones in it and pork belly was soggy and tastless. The WORST was when one of the burgers came with two little FLIES on the bun (one dead and the other one mourning over its little friend)!!! No joke. See the picture. Obviously none of us could finish our meals after witnessing that.<br/>Furthermore, a table next to us ordered couple of fish'n'chips that was delivered with horrendous fishy stench that made the whole room unbearable to be in.<br/>Absolutely unacceptable!!! Whatever is happening in your kitchen needs to be sorted!! You can not serve food like this. I was so embarassed I brought everyone there I had to buy a round of beers. At a different bar, of course. We ran out from the Duke like there's no tomorrow. What a disgusting place.
Good Food Good Mood
When someone suggests to me dinner at a pub they better mean a pub like The Duke. Good food, great atmosphere and killer cocktails. In fact my only complaint is the removal of several delicious desserts from the menu. The phenomenal chocolate tart they used to do and the ginormous Eton mess. <br/>The menu is actually pretty interesting for a pub although I do despair of places that have a regular parma and then a lady parma. I can pretty much guarantee you I can out eat any man be it parmas or otherwise. Definitely get the baked Camembert to share. I've replicated it at home to mouthwatering success
Jim Seymour
It's a god enough pub for a drink but avoid the food like your life depends on it. Do not eat here the food is hand down awful. Sooooo disappointing 😞
Kimberley Leggett
Overall pretty good for a pub - I think it's a slight mark up from other pubs along the same road (i.e. Young and Jackson). It's got a newly renovated area that serves as a better spot to hang out with mates over some froths. I haven't tried the food but it looked ok from plates I've seen. It was PACKED on Saturday at 6pm so you have to get in early if you want to have a place to put your drink.
Denny Patron
Overall it was ok, just a pub feed that wasn't memorable for either being great or terrible. We were in a large group and everyone said the same that it was nice but nothing amazing! Great pub for a few beers and if you happen to grab a feed then it suffice.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Not overly impressed or impressive. Food was expensive for the quality and the bowl of chips we ordered were served in a brown paper bag (bring back the plates) and as such were soggy and cool when they made it to our table. We did complain about this and they were replaced.
Hari
I had a burger here for lunch, the burger was so burned inside, I have no idea how they can price a customer so much and be so careless in serving such low quality food.<br/><br/>The staff were very friendly. But the food was horrible.
L Mac Foodie
I recently visited the Duchess, which sits above the Duke (same venue) and a more formal setting and service. I arrived during cocktail hour which was just what I needed (all cocktails were $11). The menu wasn't the usual pub foods, although there was a few familiar items. It was the steak night which included a glass of wine. The steak was very tasty and cooked exactly to my liking. I then had a dessert which was just amazing, honestly amazing. <br/>The waiter was attentive without hovering and always happy to help out with questions and recommendations. One of the best waiters I've had for a long time. <br/>Highly recommend this place, weeknights would quite. Definitely book. <br/>
Saloni
Went there last night and my credit card has been charged twice. I use paypass all the time and this has never happened before. How come staff at the cashier don't know how to use pay pass?! <br/>I tried calling today- no answer - just went to voicemail multiple times. What a waste of time !
Adamo Curry
Great pub. Good beer. No toilet paper in the mens dunnies. Great place to meet. Music is yelling at person next to you level. If you want a table make sure you book.
Lucash
Rarely am I compelled to write a negative review unless the food is absolutely terrible. The Parma here was like cardboard. Dry, tasteless, rubbish. Borderline inedible. Come here for a drink and leave it at that. The service was reasonable (friendly staff) but the kitchen leaves much to be desired. Certainly won't be back.
Sascha Rankin
It's a pub. It's average. It's exactly what you expect. Steph is murmuring in my ear that it's presented slightly better than other pubs, but to be perfectly frank at this stage I am just meeting my word quota. Blurmp

We were strolling around in the cool evening twilight & noticed this welcoming rustic style hotel. Well not so much noticed, we did need a drink (again) So we decided on dinner as well to line the stomach! The salmon was my selection, cooked perfectly with those Caesar potatoes & baby spinach. Partners eye steered toward the Darling Downs scotch fillet (our local specialty area close to Brissy for beef) Being the carnivore which he refuses to change despite my heartfelt pleas! Oh well each to his own -said it was great!
Marc
Hands down the worst service and food imagineable.....what was once such a solid brunch spot - amazing menu and great service has been left to rot into a cesspool. My advice, change the menu back to what it was and fire that awful waitress and waiter who have no idea how to run a pub on Sunday mornings.
Sam Lees
Came here to watch the NFL with a group of 10 work mates and have lunch. Halfway through the 1st quarter, without warning,  they changed the channel on our TV to the NBA. This was already being shown on 6 different televisions and after asking FOUR different staff to change it back, they all said 'they would look into it'.....<br/><br/>Alas nothing changed, the food was super average and I'll be going elsewhere from now on.

Fab food and drinks! Pleasant bartenders. Very popular for work functions. I have been here numerous times for work events and drinks and this place always provides a pleasant experience.
Themkc
Menu reads really well. Food is underwhelming.<br/><br/>Ordered the chicken burger. Tiny piece of meat. Overcooked. Dry coleslaw. And sloppy presentation. Friends had steaks and beef burgers, and they were similarly underwhelming. Warm salad looked like the mesculen mix you get at Coles. Service meh.<br/><br/>Some dishes were OK, like the sweet potato fries and calamari. But all in all, when you're paying mid-$20 for a lunch, you're expecting something a little more.<br/><br/>Nice ambience but just average food and bad value.
Fatcat
Renovation looks great! Had essentially what was the fish and chips. Both fish and chips were very crispy; sauces were yummy. Perfect for a chill dinner with a large group of people.
JDP79
Beers are always cold and delicious at this venue. Gets seriously busy before and after the footy, but it is right in the heart of the MCG precinct. Pretty good pub food too. Get there for some cheerful pub times!
The Unit
I've only had the parma here, but it's well worth a visit just for the parma. Tasty, perfectly cooked schnitzel, sauce with a good amount of zing and the fries had a really good sprinkling of chicken salt. <br/><br/>I have to go back to try the rest of the menu. But the parma is well worth the trip.
Luke Purcell
Great eggs benedict. Sauce was not too tangy with a nice rosti as the base. Healthy amount of bacon which is always great to see. Waiting staff were on the ball which is great given its an early start.
Rajio
Service was good. Food was crap. <br/>Spicy Korean chicken was not spicy. <br/>Hotdog was dry and hard to eat. Didn't taste good. <br/>The steak sandwich was the worst I have ever had and I love a steak sandwich! <br/>Would have liked focaccia for the bread but was a half toasted white bread - in between toasted and fresh. The cheese wasn't melted and just looked and tasted like someone slapped it together. I could have done better at home. <br/>Very disappointed.
Justine
Update: Have been back since, using a voucher given to me by The Duke to entice me to come back and give it another go, and I had a delicious meal (the parma is outstanding, so delicious, and the fries very tasty), service was friendly and food came out quick. Would definitely go back again after my second more positive experience. <br/>***********************************************<br/>Chose the Duke due to closeness to the Forum as we had a show to go to. We allowed 1.5hrs, assuming being a pub the meals would be quick. We told the waitress we had a show to go to. After sitting down it took about 15 min for the waitress to return to take our order. Between 4 of us we ordered a burger, hot dog, calamari and saganaki dish, all pretty quick to make dishes. The dining room wasn't very busy (but maybe there were lots of orders from downstairs?). The meals took another 45 min to come out, by this time we were getting worried we wouldn't finish dinner in time for the show, and was about to go enquire where our meals were. Our meals came out about an hour after being seated, and I can only speak for the burger and hot dog but they were underwhelming in taste, particularly the hot dog. I also had ordered a wine when they took our orders and 15 minutes later had to get a waitresses attention to ask where it was. This place is such a central pub with so much going for it, let down on this occasion by average tasting food and slow service. Based on this experience I probably wouldn't go back for a meal and would just stick to the pub/pre game drinks. Staff were friendly but need to pick up their game.
SusieQ
Good for a before the game burger or Parma. Meals very generous and beer is good. A bit noisy for me. Blaring music catering for the younger set. Lots of bar areas and live footy on a big screen.
MELISSA WHITE
I'd heard great things about this place and aesthetically it's fantastic. Sadly, that's where any compliments will end. It's certain not terrible but overall it was only OK. Our waitress, while pleasant enough didn't have enough knowledge about the menu and was a fairly slow with fulfilling drink orders. One time, after about a 15 minute wait and only after hunting her down were we told the bottle of wine we'd ordered wasn't available. I can live with that but had I not hunted her down how much longer would we have been waiting? The meals were quite nice but if I'm being honest nothing out of the ordinary. Two meals had to be returned because they were stone cold. In fairness though, they did re-cook the meals and they offered a free drink to those inconvenienced. After the meal we ordered coffee and each coffee came out individually with roughly a 5-6 minute wait in between each coffee. Again, not the end of the world but indicates a sort of lack of organisation or something. After coffees we asked where we could go to have a cocktail and we were directed to a downstairs bar. (We couldn't stay where we were as that area was being cleared for a private function). Upon arrival at the downstairs bar we were told we would need to head upstairs to Duchess for a cocktail as they were clearing that floor for a private function also. When we got to the next level (Duchess) the waiter had no idea where he could seat us even though there was NOT ONE table being used. We then spoke to the barman who also had no idea. Given we were a bit tired of being given the run around we left feeling somewhat disappointed in the overall experience. I might give it a second chance but certainly won't be in a hurry.

Came here for my birthday dinner and we weren't disappointed. Got served by a staff on his 1st day on thr job but he was well-trained, friendly and always attentative. Food was awesome and particularly enjoyed the beef tartare and the Violet Crumble dessert. Excellent atmosphere without the noise and overcrowding often experienced in the CBD. Overall very pleased and will definitely come back!
Chad
This is the perfect location for after some footy. We were at MCG and walked over. The bar snacks we got were tasty and what you would want with some revelry. However, the sauce for the wings was very heavy and "gloopy" (not sure if I made that word up). And I know at these late hours bar-restaurants will tend to get a bit sticky and the air can get heavy, but they shouldn't be dirty or unclean. The staff were busting the butt's working crazy hard but their needed to be a few more to keep up with the influx of customers. I will defiantly be back to try their Parm as one loyal customer told me is the best in the CBD.

I've always had mixed feelings about this bar. When it first opened it felt unfinished and cold with little to no atmosphere. Over time I've come to like The Duke for what it is, a good little sports bar in the heart of the city. It's a great location to meet before heading to the MCG. <br/><br/>So last Sunday before the grand final rematch against Hawthorn and West Coast, I suggested we meet here and grab some lunch. The problem with The Duke is inconsistency, especially with the food. I've been here on several occasion for lunch and dinner with mixed results. Mostly it's not bad, this day wasn't to be a good day. <br/><br/>I ordered the steak sandwich which had Beetroot relish, egg, cheese and tomato relish. Firstly the steak was way over cooked and burnt, so it had that charcoal flavour, and not in a good way. Secondly it was missing the tomato relish, so I had to revert to adding the tomato sauce that was provided on our table. It was a pity because if the steak was cooked correctly it would have been a great steak sandwich, because all the other elements were there. Even the egg was cooked perfectly. <br/><br/>The others in my party had the hamburgers, which all looked great, and the feedback from my mates was positive. (Note to self order the hamburger next time). <br/><br/>As I said, it's a great bar for catching up with friends etc, and the staff mostly seem to be a friendly mob and you certainly are made to feel welcome. I'll be back, but maybe just for drinks. <br/><br/>

The Duke of Wellington is a pub which serves a great cup of coffee as well as delicious food. Starving one day at work, I decided to head down to the Duke for a mid-afternoon meal. <br/><br/>I ordered some delicious chicken nibbles as an entrée. It had a nice spicy sauce which made the dish delectable. I then had a steak with vegetables which was the icing on the cake. I was craving a dose of iron and the steak didn't disappoint!<br/><br/>The staff are friendly and quite courteous. Highly recommend the Duke for a coffee and/or a meal.

Really good location for a quick bite and a drink before a gig at the Forum.<br/><br/>The food's fairly bland and the pricing seems inconsistent. My husband couldn't actually read the menu as it was so dark in there and the menus are printed on brown paper.<br/><br/>Decent range of beers and ciders on tap.

Top notch. Parma's here would be one of the best in Melbourne. Great selection of beer available. Chicken burger was very nice. Glad to see one of the oldest pubs in Melbourne back to one of the top places to go again.

Slightly upmarket pub. Came in at 10:30 on a Wednesday night. Ordered a couple of very overpriced cocktails. I'm happy to pay top dollar for a top drop but this was definitely not that! Just your run of the mill pubtail. Way to heavy on the lemon juice . My partner had the mojito

Looks okay.<br/>Worst food I have ever come across; fast food chains produce better food than this hole.<br/>Staff seemed so fed up; if you can't be bothered working, find a new job
I feel bad your manager is wasting his money on you trying to run a business. Don't get me started on the chef
all your food tasted BLAND; literally no flavour what so ever
if I was served a plate stacked with cardboard I would be just as satisfied as the rubbish you served me.<br/>What a waste of my money; not even fairly priced either.

I ordered the parma - I don't think I've ever had one that was so bland! The chicken was fairly thick but the sauce on top seemed like it came straight out of a can with absolutely no salt and pepper or taste. My partner ordered the steak sandwich - it was pretty good except the steak was tiny! You ate three bites of a half and all the steak was gone, leaving you with a salad sandwich. Would not recommend or go back.

Friendly and attentive staff! Came here for a work lunch, had the chicken wing entree and parma main. Chicken wings were nice and saucy definitely not for people watching their waistline, sauce was nice but heavy, I could only eat 2 because they were deliciously bad. The parma was above average given the chicken was crisp and not soggy, the coleslaw is a nice and refreshing change from plain garden salad. <br/><br/>Great selection of beers too.

Great tasting food and drinks at a fraction of the regular CBD restaurant prices, a true treasure of Melbourne. Took my girlfriend out to a special meal and treated her to a fantastic meal at such a excellent price. Recommend it to everyone.

Hit and miss...4 off us all ordered different meals: The burger and quesadilla, although still over-priced, were decent-sized and the mussels were ok-priced but tiny, and the toasted bread with them was burnt.  However, when the $26 gnocchi dish came out, it looked like a  child's portion...You would think the kitchen would be embarrassed to serve such a small dish for such a big price !

Came here for lunch on a weekday, despite the decor being pleasant and the wait staff being nice, the dish I ordered was over seasoned and the mussels were tiny. The burgers and parma's are a better choice if you go.

A while back we rated The Duke of Wellington’s parma after hearing so many good things about it but our experience was average. Months on and we are still hearing great things about it, people still recommending it to us and to top it off we saw the sexiest photo of the Duke parma a few weeks ago on Instagram. That was the final straw, and so we decided to give the Duke another crack. <br/>Looks wise, these things were indeed the sexiest chicken parma’s we had ever seen. But looks can be deceiving, especially when it comes to birds.<br/><br/>Digging in the first thing we noticed is that the parmas did not come out very hot at all, some around the table were in fact cold - not a good sign. Chicken was of good quality and tasty enough, yet a little dry and the fact that it was cold about a quarter of the way in was a deal breaker. Crumbing was quite nice and was perfectly cooked,<br/>There was an abundance of napoli which was good to see. It was rich and quite tasty.<br/>The ham didn’t do much for the parma at all.<br/>The cheddar cheese was the star of the parma. It was beautifully melted and had a lovely texture and colour. Was different to the typical mozzarella or tasty cheese. <br/>The chips were barely touched by any of us - this is a concern as we continuously find ourselves trading each other for more chips on Monday nights. But this time the chips were soggy and withered which was disappointing as they were well cut and had the skin on which usually makes a solid chip in our opinion. <br/>The coleslaw salad was our favourite part and the only thing that we all managed to finish. It was so fresh and tasty and very well dressed. It was a great change from the garden mixes that generally accompany parmas. <br/>The most disappointing part about this parma is the fact that it had SO much potential. All the ingredients were absolutely there but at the end of the day who wants to eat a cold parma with soggy chips ? No one.<br/><br/>5.5/10

A casual and comfortable option for a tasty meal after work. I ordered the pan fried salmon with apple, fennel and radish salad with celeriac puree and was pleasantly surprised. Much better than your average pub grub.

Worst Parma I've ever had. Terrible KFC style side of coleslaw and soggy. Service and location as well as ambience were good though. Would never recommend.

Great place, enjoyed the vibes, the food was amazing, the staff were very friendly, also meet some of the Collingwood players there too, great place, great food

The location is great!  I have had nice meals there in the past, however lunch today was awful.  I ordered the best steak with chips & salad $32.  The steak had fat on it, the chips were overcooked & soggy with oil all the way through.  The lettuce, tomato & cucumber was also soaked in oil.  I asked the waitress for fresh chips as soon as she brought it, pointing out that they had been reheated and left in oil too long.  She said she would ask the chef but did not return to the table and I did not eat the chips or salad.  The service was woeful.  The wine was nice and served in a cold glass.

The Duke of Wellington is unlike your typical street corner city pub. Well so it seems on a Thursday night anyway. Embraced by warm decor and equally warm greeting from the maĂźtre d'. The Duke makes you feel as if you've just stepped in front of a fireplace, walking in from the cold streets of Melbourne CBD. A reminder this is on a Thursday night....it's the calm before the (Friday night) storm. The 300g scotch fillet was cooked to perfection, well almost. Slightly too salty, but only just. Nevertheless it was delicious and juicy. Tenderness was on par as the medium rare was complimented by pepper sauce that would send the tastebuds asking for more. But be careful not to over-pour as too much is well...simply just too much. To top it off, the deconstructed apple pie was a fitting dessert. The only thing I didn't do was lick the plate clean. A revisit is a definite must.

The food is ... not bad, but for the huge prices you would expect something better. I had a mushroom burger, that really was just a few veges between bread and my friend had the lambshanks that came out cold and 1 carrot!! For $30 you really need to do better. None of the table of 8 will be back.

Came along for a quick bite before the football and got a nice steak and wine special. We chose the red which was a lovely Shiraz. Steak was medium rare as requested.

What a beautiful venue, first time in Melbourne and was told this was a good pub in the CBD. Wow! Food felt like it took a life time and the service was ok if you cracked staff who understood English. If someone cared it would be a great place to be. The reviews seem harsh but come on guys it's not hard to get this type of service right!

Is there a score less than 1? On a packed Friday lunch the basic ability to take an order an deliver it seemed to beyond this place. Staff literally wander around asking tables if they ordered something. For our table most of the food took an hour and then was delivered cold. Give the running of the place over to the local Kindergarten. It couldn't be worse.

The local watering hole is a meeting place for friends, colleagues, family dinners and big nights out alike. As a nation, you could sort of call us experts. One of the stalwarts of the Melbourne pub scene is The Duke of Wellington. It is located in the heart of the CBD, so is a favourite of corporates for a Friday night drink or boozy lunch. It is always pumping before a footy game and even has an upstairs dining area, The Dutchess, for those who prefer it just a little bit fancy.

Order the scallops and chicken bits as an entrée to tide over our hunger until we ordered mains after 40 mins we had to check if they were still fishing for the scallops and visiting the farm for the chicken!! The place was not too busy when we arrived..... food came out 5 mins later scallops were topped with cold mashed stuff and soagy.. chicken looked limp.. off to another restaurant for mains! Not really worth the 1!
Just Another Foodie
When I was reading the reviews for The Duke of Wellington for an upcoming lunch function I was a bit worried about what to expect. I decided to play it safe and order The Napoleon Burger and to my surprise it was actually decent. I also enjoyed the seasoned chips on the side. Thought the food was a bit pricey but I guess that's cause it's in the CBD.

The Duke proved to be the perfect wet weather refuge, but to be frank provided little else. The food was very average at best, but on the upside the service was good, but even that couldn't possibly warrant an encore :(

I went there for dinner at 630pm Friday night. <br/><br/>I ordered a chicken parmigiana and it was awful. It was cold, and had hardly any topping over the top of the chicken. The crumbed was soggy like it had been warmed up in a microwave. The chips are terrible too. They say on the menu that is hard cut home made but they are obviously packaged from a mass production. Worst parmigiana I ever had!

There is so much to love about The Duke of Wellington! From the amazing energy and buzz that greets you as you walk through the door, to the fantastic service, warm décor and very delicious food. Definitely get down on Friday night, the live music and DJ are awesome!

Decided to pop in for brekky spare of the moment as it was just down from our hotel, big mistake..play by play..arrived at 11am, sat in top glass box area, had to walk to bar to ask do I order here or at the bar, first young lady taking order was helpful and nice enough, suggested a few things and we ordered 11:10 large Cap, Tea, B&E roll (soft eggs) and another dish..at 11:30 I have to walk to bar and ask where coffees are, lady at coffee machine(not first girl) says she will check but make straight away, 11:35 brings coffees and says sorry it went through till but didnt print out, I asked about our food, she said thats on its way (obviously that got lost too) Cap is nice but lukewarm, no sugar at any tables up here..have to go to bar again, sugar please?..11:40 B&E roll turns up (fried eggs) go to bar for the 4th time and kindly mention I ordered soft eggs (big taste difference), young guy says, ok I will get that fixed up, I go and sit down very hungry now, he turns up and says, how did you want it again? Soft please..we wait till 11:50, nothing, so we decide to leave after 50mins and go to bar for the 5th time to pay which felt wrong, explain that its been almost an hour and havent eaten (same girl that originally took out order) says really sorry we are usually not this busy.. there is maybe 20-30 people in the place, sorry not busy. Took B&E roll and Cap off bill (I didnt even get the B&E roll) Looking around where we where sitting in the glass section others where having the same experience. Would not go back. Went to degraves street and had a 5 star completely opposite experience at a popular breakfast place which will be my next review.<br/>

Just had a super disturbing meal. I live across the road and popped in for a quick bite. Ordered a beer and a slow roast lamb roll. Whilst tucking into my meal, I looked up to see a mouse roaming the bar floor. I let the bar staff know. The female staff freaked out and grabbed the bar, whilst the male staff announced that it was normal and said not to worry. I'm sorry but this isn't ok or normal and this is one of many bad meals I've had here. How is this normal. I'm disgusted. <br/>

We visited The Duke of Wellington early on a Saturday evening before heading to catch some footy at the 'G. It was busy downstairs, but up on the first floor where we'd booked a table it was less packed, the decor was more modern and chic too. We ordered some drinks and soon after picked out our meals from the shortish menu. Bruce went for the $25 Steak and Wine deal, with parsley butter, chips and salad. Apart from a little gristle he seemed to enjoy it.

Need to retrain staff!. I didn't eat here but I didn't need to or want to after the way we were treated by staff in the wine bar. It was horrible and would never go there again.

<br/>Here is an update to my previous review <br/>After another visit- I have decided to change my review to reflect my view of late of this place <br/>Food wise- I have not changed my stand where I believe the quality can be further improved and perhaps look at what's on offer as I feel the choice are still very limited and it's average.<br/><br/>However, the staff there are very nice and the venue itself is quite good in location and size given its ability to host larger groups. If you want to have drinks and don't care about the food, you could certainly consider this place.<br/><br/>Previous review:<br/>Extremely average lunch menu- been there several times for work occasions. Personally would not go, although the bar setting is not bad itself

Great Breakfast. We spent two days in Melbourne and The Duke was an excellent stop for breakfast. The pain au chocolat was delicious and my husband enjoyed the poached egg on smashed avocado with mint and lime. It was nice and quiet in the morning so a good way to wake up.

Customer Service 101. With the ground floor breakfast area busy, we were ushered into the pub area and forgotten. Twenty minutes later we walked back into the breakfast area, which was quiet by then, only to sit around waiting for service once again. Eventually our coffee orders were taken and after choosing our breakfasts we flagged a waitron to place our orders. 'You will have to wait 20 minutes before your order is processed as we have a function on'. We decided to try the Duke despite unfavourable feedback from colleagues, our mistake.<br/>The staff seemed pleasant enough and the venue is nice but I would suggest having someone with an inkling of what constitutes good customer service at the helm....
