Review Bibimbap - Melbourne

Tarwin Stroh-Spijer
Super quick, super delicious and healthy. Had the pork Bibimbap (came with miso soup) and the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) "popcorn". The décor is beautiful and the atmosphere was relaxed even though I was there at a busy time. The Bibimbap was super fresh with loads of veggies and meat; they even threw it under a flame thrower to have that "just off the BBQ taste" without having to wait 15 minutes. The chicken "popcorn" had crunchy surrounds full of yummy sweet meat. Yum! Totally getting it delivered by Uber for dinner tomorrow!!

First time here and we really enjoyed it. That miso soup before getting our bibimbaps was delicious. Big tick there. Then our rice bowls, one with chicken soy lemon sauce avocado and another one with chilli sauce fried egg. Really good. Want to try more proteins and sauces. Also I guess it is a healthy meal option.

Felt pretty ripped off paying $13.50 for the traditional bibimbap. The rice was chunky and unpleasant, the bowl looked nothing like those advertised, the sauce was overpowering and I wasn't offered the lunch deal to get some popcorn chicken and a drink for an extra $1.50! "You can have it next time" is not good enough response when I realised and guess what?! I won't be coming back. Ever. So many other delicious cheap eats around the city for lunch on a weekday. Massive regrets and would not recommend.

Food is ok, but not great value. Each bibimbap starts from $13, and costs extra for essentials, like $2 for a fried egg. Comes with a cup of green tea. There are many Korean restaurants close by where you can find much tastier bibimbap.

Pretty simple - pick your protein from pork, chicken or tofu. Choose a sauce from sesame, spicy (not really), miso. Add some extras. Done. Despite the name, the dish is not cooked or presented in the usual stone pot. I think this detracts somewhat, as you don't get the crispy bits and the meal isn't as hot. Having said that the ingredients are all top notch and nicely cooked. Just wish it was a bit bigger as I think it was a tad on the lean side for $15 (spicy pork with extra egg).

I think food is not really good also... service is not good. They were not kind . Even i ordered drink they just forgot about that and didn't apologize . So overall i didn't like there service. And food also not really good. I disappointed to this restaurant.

Love this cute little restaurant in Katherine Place! As soon as you walk in you can smell the amazing aromas. Courtney and the team will greet you with a smile when you arrive :) It was so great to see healthy vegan options available. I tried the TOFU bowl with RED DEVIL hot sauce. The bowl itself was so fresh and vibrant, with lots of different vegetables. There was a generous serving of tofu, and the sauce was HAWT haha. I finished the bowl feeling satisfied for sure! I also got to try one of the new vegan options, MUSHROOMS marinated in a delicious soy sauce. Bibimbap is a great brunch, lunch or arvo snack spot. Sometimes it can be hard to find a quick vegan lunch option in the CBD, so it's great to see some healthy, tasty and filling options around!

We are so lucky to try their new sweet chilli KFC bowl (will be available soon) and we totally love it! The chicken was fried to perfect and complemented with the amzing homemade sauce. We also had the beef ramyun, which is a bowl of chewy noodle in spicy soup with mozzarella cheese (yes, cheese in soup! It's amazing trust me). The beef bulgogi in the noodle is also delicious. We also had the Melb foodie bowl, which has chicken, avo and spicy mayo sauce. It is pretty healthy but still really good.

Bibimbap is such a delicious way to get your Korean fix in a convenient bowl! Perfect for those who work in the CBD with their 2 locations.

Pictured here is their Traditional Rice Bowl with bulgolgi beef which totally hit the spot.

They also do noodle dishes too!!

I could eat here everyday! I had the Korean fried chicken and it is so tasty and crispy. Will try other rice dishes next time. Too bad they are not open for dinner

Got it via uber eats and came so quickly which was awesome. Got to build your own- choose your meat and the side dishes but I think they forgot my jalapenos. Tasty, but small serving

Epic rice bowls with a Melbourne modern take on a traditional Korean Bibimbap. Plenty of variety from pork, chicken and vegetarian.

It’s becoming a go-to lunch destination for me and my colleagues. If you’re looking for a delicious (healthy-ish) variety for lunch around the area, definitely one to check out.

Flavours are great and good quality ingredients with eye for detail in presentation BUT super stingey and not very generous with their portions and incorrectly quoted/charged me. For an Asian spot this bugs me a lot. I called in my order today and asked about their combo, the girl on the phone said its now changed in price and is $15 for the bibimbap bowl plus KFC plus drink. Annoying but I said to myself, fine whatever...I just remember the poster picture shows the KFC comes in its own container and I liked that. I confirmed the price on the phone before placing my order and then when I got there to pick it up, the girl at the register remained adamant it was $18. So I felt over charged. Not very happy about that. Also the kfc that was supposed to be in a separate container - instead they placed inside my bibimbap bowl. Ok fine, less waste...but had I known...I'd ask for a it to be separated wsince I was sharing it. Annoying, again. At this point, I'm still, fine whatever...it's Melbourne, its expensive! Then I got a Korean coffee for my drink and the cup was half full! That was annoying again. What's with that. It's a freakin coffee. Why be thrifty? Fill up the cup like a decent establishment. If I had gotten another drink I get a full 200 ml or so...this was like 80 mls of coffee! Goodness. Now it all just felt like they were being tight asses. Geez...how hard it is for places like this and Shonan next door to understand portions matter!! They are serving a worker lunch crowd not catering for a upmarket gallery event. Look, guys the food was good at Bibimbap, filling for a slender 50kg person like me...but I feel like for the price its a bit of a rip. Not sure if I'll go back. Giving two stars because on top of all the annoyances she told me TWICE it was $15 then charged me more $18 and didn't honor its their mistake. But she did apologise in the most nonchalant way and I couldn't even hear it she mumbled it. Like she didn't wanna admit fault.
That's just 100% crap customer service.
Not leaving a good impression of care at all.

Great bibimbaps!! Only criticism is they don’t do them in traditional hot pots and are lacking in generosity in their portions. A tucked away wonder worth a try nonetheless.

Really enjoyed a quick lunch here, their seating area is quite small but this place would be good to pick up a quick lunch. The many of their snacks were not available but their bowls were filling but not over filling. Well executed

The Fo0die
Fo0die dined as a guest of Bibimbap and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.

Bibimbap is located on quiet Katherine Place, a short walk from Southern Cross train station and just near the Rialto building. From humble beginnings starting off as a food truck that was supported by crowd funding, Bibimbap has now opened up their first physical store in the CBD. We dined on a Friday afternoon where the small venue filled up and also emptied very quickly. It was one of those spots where people seemed to order, eat and then leave rather than hang around; but it could be the location attracting mostly workers on a lunch break who had to get back to work.

This place serves Korean bibimbap with healthy twist. The food feels modernised and was really good. We had the gimbap, salmon bibimbap and the beef bibimbap. Their homemade spam is amazing! You gotta try it.
The Dear Luncher
Katherine Place has gathered pace in recent years with new food options galore – several different cuisines in a very small space. Easily the most eclectic on the West side of the CBD. The Koreans have now joined the party down this little alleyway. Bibimbap is a nice, cosy setup. Very tidy and inviting.

The Bibimbap bowl was the obvious choice first up. There was a decision to order extra beef for $2 and this was the correct choice. It was mentioned that the standard serve is 100 grams, this is not enough.

The Dear Luncher is in full agreement with Hello. Imnikki about the chilli sauce overpowering the taste of the beef. Once this was noticed, the stirring stopped and the remnants of the sauce were not used. Definitely don’t pour the whole lot in – it will just take over and you will feel like you’re eating sauce-flavoured meat, rice, cucumber, cabbage and carrot. The beef was plentiful thanks to the extra amount ordered and it had an agreeable texture to it – the small amounts sampled that were not under the influence of the chilli sauce had a real Korean seasoning vibe to it that Your Dear Luncher has experienced elsewhere.

Did The Dear Luncher feel that this was a satisfying experience? Close enough. Did it feel like $15 well spent, maybe. Will The Dear Luncher return? It’s possible.

Best Korean food ever - so authentic! We had the beef bowl and vego croquette which was sensational. The service was quick and the food was freshly made on the spot. We were very impressed, no doubt you will be too, check it out.

First it opened with limited menu similar to their food truck but now it has range of small dishes, snacks to go with Bibimbap. Visually appealing and healthy. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Hello. Imnikki
With only three different choices of bibimbap (beef, chicken and tofu), you would think that they would be able to create something fail-proof. Well, they didn’t, but since this place is fresh out of the oven, I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that they can and will improve.

Bibimbap is often described as a bowl filled with colour, flavour and texture. What we got was moderate colour, average flavour and decent texture. The Korean chilli sauce (aka gochujang) was a tasty combination of sweet, savoury and spicy, but too much of a good thing is not necessarily better. The gochujang masked the flavours of the meat and the seasoned veggies in the bowl, essentially turning the gochujang into the only flavour you can taste.

The cucumbers and carrots provided a nice crunch, but too many veggies and too little rice gave me a sensation of eating a salad, and not a rice dish. There was minimal beef, and what beef there was were in the form of mini minced beef balls/cubes. That was a first for us. I was genuinely expecting thinly sliced beef strips. Taste-wise it did not affect us at all, but it was a weird mouthfeel.

Polite and friendly service, so that’s a plus in my books.
