I love the service. The owner is a very friendly guy and enjoys what he does. Here they do great waffles and teas. But I wish they had more people in the late afternoon as they could have been open for a little while longer
Spacious modern atmosphere. Dropped by for a weekend brunch. A mixture of traditional brunch items with some interesting twists. Also had an intriguing lunch menu.
Highlights
I ordered the Cauliflower carbonara - really enjoyable dish. I’m a huge cauliflower fan, so I may be biased, but loved the combination of roasted cauliflower (could have done with a touch more seasoning/spices) mixed with cheesy carbonara spaghetti . Fans of bacon will enjoy large cubes of perfectly cooked bacon pieces. (9/10)
Friend ordered the Kangaroo Chilli Con Carne- generous serve which came in a tortilla bowl. Tasted delicious - would recommend for meat lovers/those who want a hearty meal (8/10)
Cons:
One of my friends ordered the breakfast builder with a variety of sides (croquettes, avocado, etc) . Unfortunately, one of the servers got my friends order wrong. Mixed up her egg order (She didn’t make a fuss- but still disappointing for her). Also serving size was modest at best, came with a single slice of sour dough. Had to request a second slice ($2!). Overall expensive compared to other items on the menu (including 2 sides + toast was more expensive than anyone else’s undividual meal). I would recommend you avoid unless you want something very light/ have dietary requirements. (4/10)
My friend watched us eat our meals with envy and as she was still hungry ended up ordering a crepe (Coventry special) - which she really enjoyed
While we had genuinely friendly service- always with a smile, servers could be more efficient and attentive. Overall would definitely return again, but will probably stick to the lunch menu items.
The coffee is mediocre. The waffles are divine - fluffy, fresh and crispy where you need it to be. The other breakfast/brunch items were generous in serving but lacking in authenticity, balance and flavour. Service was good and space, perfect for a visit after a trip to the market.
The Coventry is not your run of the mill café, it's a cafe with a dedicated waffles and crepes menu. I could smell the freshly made waffles the whole time I was dining in; what a torture this was for a sweet tooth like me!
I could have saved myself the grief and order them waffles but I was recovering from one cheat meal too many and swore that I would eat clean. Thus I had the Acai Super Bowl. While this was a tasty bowl filled with fresh fruit, I was left unfulfilled. Firstly it was a bit runny, and secondly and most importantly, I opted to add peanut butter but the peanut butter was blended in, resulting in a very minimal peanut butter flavour as the tartness of berries and tangy yoghurt were the dominant taste. I was told that this was how they prepare the bowl after feedback from other customers showed that they preferred it blended it, otherwise the peanut butter was too thick and chunky. Fair enough, but where's the joy in that? Give me a huge dollop any day please!
The Spanish Baked Eggs was the much superior dish. It was a hearty and flavourful mix of eggs, tomato sauce, chorizo, potatoes, olives, herbs and spinach. Bright and piquant flavours, thick and smooth in consistency, it was not made just for dipping the sourdough in but also for slurping.
No complains whatsoever with the dirty chai and skinny latte, both very well made drinks. The service was also excellent, and the proactive effort by the staff to find out where the peanut butter was in the bowl is very much appreciated. If only I went with the waffles, I'm sure this experience would have been a 10 out of 10.
My ideal weekend starts with a sleep until at least 11am followed by a strong latte at a cafe with my man and doggie. the Coventry ticks all those boxes for me and I love how it’s right opposite south Melbourne market, so after brunch I can do my grocery shopping and get items that aren’t usually available at supermarkets.
The Coventry have the breakfast/brunch options, but it also has a liquor license so feel free to order a cocktail or two. We had more lunch and tapas dishes that day and really enjoyed it all! Chicken tacos, polenta chips, saganaki and croquettes.
Couldn’t leave without dessert, so how about freshly made to order waffles with Nutella, strawberries and fresh cream.
Awesome staff, awesome food. The most exciting menu on the street!
Had the Spanish eggs, and my friend had their new spicy tomato soup... on a 7 degree day, it hit the spot
Just across from the South Melbourne market you’ll find this really beautifully designed space, with heaps of brunch and lunch options to choose from. Come hungry, you’ll want to try a few dishes!
We chose to sit outside in their cute courtyard area to brunch in the sun and enjoy...
CHILLI SCRAMBLED EGGS - feta cheese folded through creamy scrambled eggs atop toasted sourdough, with crisp bacon and fresh avocado mousse to mellow the chilli bite.
KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN - A generous serve of juicy golden fried chicken with a killer coating - a little spicy and deliciously crunchy. Served with light and fluffy waffles to soak up the maple syrup, and fresh berries. This was my favourite dish, the sweet and salty flavour combo was addictive!
VEGGIE GRAIN SALAD - a gorgeous bowl of quinoa lentil salad, pomegranate, Greek yoghurt, and rocket. We added the chicken, which made it into a hearty meal.
To drink, we ordered the PEANUT POWER, with a big peanut butter hit, vanilla protein and banana. And the MUSCLE MATCHA, with coconut milk and vanilla.
I have to say, their smoothies are the best I’ve had. I know because we couldn’t help but drink them in under a minute. Pro tip - Order two!
The team are super friendly here, great service.
The Coventry was such a beautiful cafe! I came in for dinner and tried the sharing plates menu, the desserts and of course, the coffee.
My cappuccino was made perfectly and it also looked very pretty. I love the hidden detail inside the mug! My friend had the hot chocolate and she enjoyed that very much.
We tried the Polenta Fries, the Crispy Feta Balls and the Chicken taco. The fries and the Crispy Feta Balls were nice but it wasn't anything extra special. The tacos however, oh boy. It was the most perfect taco I've had in a while. The chicken was crispy and I loved the contrast of that with the soft taco.
We had a couple macarons from the dessert window, they were generous in size! But the Coventry Special Waffles brought it home for us. There's just something about strawberries, bananas and nutella on waffles! I definitely would like to come back here to try the breakfast/ brunch menu items!

Excellent food with a great variety and friendly staff. Nice bright open space with outdoor seating. Perfect spot for a visit when your heading to the South Melbourne market.
Amazing! I enjoyed the steak sandwich the most. There were different varieties of food. The Nutella chocolate drink was soooo good I would defs order another one HAHHAA
One of my FAVOURITE brunch places. Lovely place and friendly staff 🥰 I had the steak sandwich, prawn saganaki, strawberry crepe, nachos and matcha mango smoothie. 🤭 I ate a lot because it was that good 👌🏻
Very good food and friendly staffs! :) would totally come back for their spanish baked eggs & prawn saganaki! Super delicious! Their jumbo macarons are also super delightful :)
I definitely highly recommend visiting this place , the food is amazing and they staff is very accommodating , I specially liked the baked eggs which is part of their winter menu , I’m definitely coming back for more
Such an amazing cafe in an amazing location right next to the markets. The flavours they provide with their foods make brunching there so addictive. Can’t wait for my next visit
We were invited to The Coventory last night an extremely spacious venue location directly across from the South Melbourne markets. Unfortunately our booking hadn’t been passed on so we were only able to order limited dishes from the menu as they were about to close so do ensure you call ahead if planning to visit of an evening.
We were able to try the nachos, arancini and katafi prawns. Note the menu on zomato is not current so the prawn dish was a nice surprise and probably my favourite of those dishes. Another delightful surprise was that they were able to make the chicken and waffles for us (off the breakfast menu) which were absolutely delicious. A perfectly yummy waffle topped with well cooked succulent on the inside crispy on the outside chicken.
We finished the meal with a crepe from a broad and tasty selection of flavours. We went for peanut butter and jelly which was an easy choice. Such a fabulous way to end the meal
What an absolute hidden gem! I can't say I've ventured all that often to South Melbourne, but I'm so glad I had the excuse to, in trialling this beautiful café! First thing I noticed was the aesthetic! It's lovely, bright and light! There's a lot of greenery which I absolutely love. It really does help to make the whole experience a super enjoyable one.
The staff here are absolutely lovely, attentive and helpful! I ordered the Acai Bowl (with PB), while my friend ordered a grain salad with chicken. She also built her own juice, whilst I ordered the Matcha Muscle smoothie! Both dishes were great and of a decent size too. My smoothie went down a treat.. not too fulling or heavy which was refreshing for a large smoothie!
Honestly, there's very little (if anything) I could fault about this place! My experience was absolutely lovely and I'll definitely be back this side of town .. even if it is just to dine here! Would definitely recommend a visit. :)
The Coventry, opening almost a year ago, located directly across the South Melbourne Market, is a café serving speciality coffee with a range of dishes for breakfast and lunch. The venue is very large with plenty of seating and is filled with an abundance of greenery.
We came here to dine today at around 1pm and being a Tuesday, it was relatively quiet. We sat down near the window and was shown the menus. We couldn’t believe how many items there were on offer - it was incredibly hard to decide what to order! After much thought, we ordered the Korean Fried Chicken & Waffles, Prawn Saganki, the Crispy Skin Atlantic Salmon and 4 Macaroons. For drinks we had two coffees.
The Fried Chicken & Waffles were absolutely splendid. The chicken was hot and crunchy and very succulent and went incredibly well with the waffles. The fresh strawberries, pomegranates and blueberries made the dish extra sweet, balancing the savouriness of the chicken. Divine! The Saganki definitely had a Mediterranean twist to it with that delicious spicy pomodoro sauce. The prawns were cooked to perfection and the flavours of the dish worked so well together. The Atlantic Salmon was definitely our favourite dish. The skin was crunchy and tasted amazing. The salmon was nice and pink and simply melted in your mouth. All of the other ingredients in the dish complemented the salmon very well. The macaroons that we had were the Bubblegum, French Vanilla, Raspberry White Chocolate and Strawberry. They are imported from Macaron De Paris and are surprisingly all Gluten-Free! They all tasted delicious and was a great way to end a wonderful meal.
We absolutely loved our dining experience at The Coventry today and we cannot thank the team for inviting us in. We look forward to coming back soon!
Located in heart of South Melbourne, just a hop and a skip away from the historic South Melbourne Market, The Coventry pleases with exciting Asian and Mediterranean influenced brunch options alongside quality coffee.
Earthy tones and splashes of greenery create a welcoming space, perfect for lazy weekend brunches. The café is relatively new but runs like a well-oiled machine. Not surprising given owner, Nick Bourgazas is a hospitality veteran – he’s owned venues such as Piatella and Meat in the Middle in Glen Waverley.
Super cosy environment right next to south Melbourne market. Staff were really cool. Their fried chicken and waffles were amazing. Thanks guys
Great location across from the sth melb markets. I ordered the Korean waffles and a cappuccino.
The waffles where were delicious, freshly made and the chicken pieces where thick, cooked well and tasty.
The coffee was ok beans by Ona Coffee.
I love everything about this cafe, it deserves a 5 based on food alone, however I think it’s a bit pricey, I like the idea of crepes and waffles however not matter which crepe or waffle you order they will cost $14 for a crepe or $16 for a waffle. So $14 for a plain Jane crepe!
Great place for a good quality coffee and a fresh breakfast! Their crepes are a must as they taste delicious! The service was very quick. I highly recommend especially if you are a crepe lover!
We were invited along to The Coventry, located opposite the South Melbourne Market, for a brunch experience. Our waitress Urania was fantastic, which made our experience a memorable one!
Your coffee order is accompanied by a coffee card informing you the coffee name, bean region, and tasting notes.
We liked that as we could read about what coffee we were drinking.
Ordering two savoury dishes first, we decided on the Middle Eastern Breakfast and the Avocado & Eggs Benedict. Both dishes were great, with a special mention for the bacon bits in the Benny!
For a sweet dish, we shared the Peanut butter & Jelly Waffle. Always a great partnership, PB and J! The waffles were light with a soft crunch on the outside. A deliciously good way to end our morning brunch.
We thank The Coventry for having us. We experienced our brunch as guests, and all of our opinions are genuine and are based on our experience at the time of our visit.

A new cafe has opened right across the road from South Melbourne Market – The Coventry offers local specialty coffee sourced from Cote Terra, and a Mediterranean-influenced menu.
Conveniently located directly across the street from South Melbourne Market, The Coventry is a great addition to the South Melbourne cafe scene.
This spacious cafe offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Tables out the front face the market, whilst if you’d prefer something more secluded then you can sit in courtyard to the rear of the building.
Visiting for breakfast we ordered the Avocado & Eggs Benedict and the Middle Eastern Breakfast, along with a cold brew coffee and mango manga smoothie to drink. Everything we ordered came out beautifully presented.
The Avocado & Eggs Benedict was a revelation, I’ve always enjoyed an eggs benny but the addition of avocado takes it up a notch. I loved how the egg was presented inside the avo half. The Middle Eastern Breakfast was another stellar dish with chickpea & paprika smash on toasted pita, lemon zest, cherry tomato, feta and rocquette salad, smoky bacon and a poached egg. The chickpea and paprika smash brought the dish together. The cold brew and smoothie were great options for a warm day.
Overall I was rather impressed with The Conventry. I’d love to return and try the all day waffle and crepe menu. I give The Coventry 4.5 ⭐️ out of 5. Thanks very much for having me.
Located pposite the busy South Melbourne Market is the brand new The Coventry. It’s perfect for Sunday brunch dates. It also caters for those who are dog lovers, with room to bring your furry pets. There is a beautiful function room and the cafe itself is very open and spacious.
There is ample parking 1-2hour free parking from Sunday through to Saturday from 8am-6pm.
With unique a menu created with lots of thought and creativity. The menu has been inspired by the chef’s adventures from all parts of the world. We ordered the Middle Eastern Breakfast, Korean Fried Chicken & Waffles, Strawberry mint crepes, batch brew and a latte. The flavours were on point, traditional flavours with a fun twist.
The staff at The Coventry are very attentive and friendly. I’m looking forward to coming to try their lunch menu and cocktails!
There’s no shortage of cafe destinations in Melbourne thanks to the thriving brunch culture, so it’s always welcoming to see a new cafe that offers outside the box dining options. And most importantly, when they manage to pull it off. Enter The Coventry, which certainly faces stiff competition from the abundance of cafes all around South Melbourne, but offers inventive dishes that set them apart. Like their fish and chips; silky fresh tuna tartare with a good dose of herby aroma and zesty punch mixed through, and paired with polenta chips that sported a good crunchy interior and velvety smooth interior.
Nick Bourgazas has always felt right at home in the hospitality scene. He grew up at the local markets as a child, was driving forklifts as early as 11 years of age, and has owned successful venues such as Piatella and Meat in the Middle in Glen Waverley. When he saw this space opposite the South Melbourne Market come up, he jumped at the opportunity to return to his grassroots.
Named after the street on which it’s located, Coventry Café is Nicks version of a contemporary café which compliments the area’s multicultural slant. The venue itself has a large open space, with live greenery, and an earthy vibe.
The venue itself seats over 60 patrons, and brings home-style foods to a modern area. Flavours of the Mediterranean feature prominently on the menu, and specialty coffee is in the spotlight.
Coventry serves as a community hub, and multicultural space that specialises in food made with love, and created with passion. Breakfast options include French Toast with a quenelle of smoked yoghurt and vanilla infused mascarpone, berries, and crumbed pistachio; and the Rosti a la Paris with garlic butter. Lunch features Gnocchi a la Noire, which is made with homemade ink potato gnocchi, chunky porcini mushrooms, chicken and pesto; and Prawn Saganaki served with jalapeno corn bread. Crepes are also served at the take away window, for visitors wishing to experience the love without dining in.
Coffee is sourced from Cote Terra, which is where Nick used to spend his days off, dining out. He’s using their Flying Dutchman blend for milk based coffee, which brings together the fruit tones of a natural Indian, with mellow caramel tones of a Colombian. The current Costa Rican San Marco single origin in the hopper is a naturally processed lot I couldn’t pass up, which had delicious sweet grape and cherry notes.
Known for its exceptional coffee and farm-to-table food, Melbournians are coveting The Coventry – an exciting new café located just opposite the historic South Melbourne Market.
From Mexican to Mediterranean, the menu masters all cuisines your heart could desire. Signature dishes include ‘The Black Gold’ homemade ink potato gnocchi with chunky porcini mushrooms, chicken and pesto, the Korean fried chicken and waffles and the contemporary take on fish and chips - finely cubed tuna
tartare with golden polenta chips.
Coffee connoisseurs will rejoice at the specialty beans and brews on offer, including the current Costa Rican San Marco single origin; naturally processed, with sweet grape and cherry notes, and cold drip coffee, filtered on-site. Of course, the Coventry uses only the best coffee machine: a San Remo Opera 2.0.
Also, did I mention the ALL-DAY CREPES AND WAFFLES? Yet another one of The Coventry’s specialties, these treats are made fresh daily and available for dine-in or take-away. Do try one with your coffee or perhaps after a long brunch to finish on the perfect sweet note.
Apparent from its name, The Coventry is located just in the South Melbourne Market neighbourhood in Coventry Street. A big spacious, high ceiling and full of light café with red canopy is definitely hard to be missed. The overall look inside is very clean and spacious, definitely is pram friendly and suitable for big group as well. They provide a private area upstairs for small function up to 10 people. They serve Asian fusion brunch menu from Middle Easter Breakfast to Korean Fried Chicken.
The Coventry does a delightfully modern take on the greasy and stodgy battered fish and chips. The Coventry's version is much healthier and surprisingly moreish. The tuna tartare is finely diced so that even if you're squeamish about eating raw fish, you cannot feel the chewiness of the uncooked fish. The tuna is tender and melts in your mouth. It's beautifully seasoned with cornichons, capers and shallots and the aioli gives it a lovely creaminess - it's utterly yummy and there's not a hint of fishiness at all. The tuna is served with these gorgeously golden and geometric fluffy polenta chips and lotus root chips.

Friendly service, relaxed ambience, tasty food
Context: weekend brunch with my husband on the way to groceries/market
Chef made a mistake with my allergy and berries, including cut strawberries, were served on my dish. When I pointed it out and explained it to the waitress (who was not the one that took my order), she took my dish back to the kitchen and got me a fresh plate. She was careful to clarify her understanding of my allergy. Very professional and diligent. I can only assume the waiter who took my order didn't explain it clearly enough to the chef to begin with.
Otherwise service was fine and food was great. We both enjoyed our meals

Loved the atmosphere and the decor. We had chilli scrambled eggs and the Korean fried chicken and waffles. They are to die for! Must try when you visit. Staff are friendly and very attentive!
Friendly staffs, great coffee, lovely vibe and the smell of the freshly made waffles and crepes is intoxicating!
The Spanish Baked Eggs was a hearty and flavourful mix of eggs, tomato sauce, chorizo, potatoes, olives, herbs and spinach. Bright and piquant flavours, thick and smooth in consistency, it was not made just for dipping the sourdough in but also for slurping. The Acai Bowl was a bit too runny for my liking but taste-wise it was good.
