Review Benjamin's Cafe - Melbourne

Lovely café!! Asked for dirty chai and they offered loose leaf (delicious!) Came with a shot of coffee on the side, some cinnamon, some sparkling water Very flavourful food and kind staff, just popped in and addressed them, very eager and nice to us Crepes were delicious as well, asked for extras and were incorporated with no issues! I've been here for lunch a couple times already and intent on coming here again! Highly recommended 🤗

Savoury and sweet food is just amazing! The Chef did an awesome job with the food he served us. We will definitely go back. I had the best fresh and fluffy waffle ever! The staff are very nice and coffee was good too. Highly recommended !

This place is an absolute gem. Fresh crepes and waffles made to order, savoury and sweet options are both delicious. Mushroom and cheese crepe was fantastic and the lemon and sugar was a lovely tangy and sweet finish. The coffee! Now here is where I get serious..... 3 different baristas on two separate visits made me a total of 4 cappuccino and they were EXACTLY the same. I haven't seen this kind of consistency in a cafe very often, but when I do, I know I have found my go-to coffee shop! If you're not hungry, at least stop in for coffee!

An excellent crepery with many options for vegans and those who are gluten intolerant. We ordered the vegan mushroom and cheese crepe as well as the vegan salted caramel crepe which were delicious, well priced and very filling. After making a small mistake with our order the chef was kind enough to give us a chocolate crepe on the house. The atmosphere was particularly great and truly made the restaurant feel like a little slice of France in Albert Park.

They probably have great waffles and crepes but I'll never know because they only do waffles and crepes between 10am and 2pm weekdays. Why?! We drove 45 mins to this place on a Saturday to find they only have cookies in the window and are making coffee.

If you love crepes and appreciate great service with a smile, then do yourself a favor and visit this amazing crepery. It has a great atmosphere, an awesome selection of food, crepes and waffles and friendly staff that actually enjoy being there. We drove all the way from Reservoir to check it out but it was well worth the drive.

We came for waffles and were not disappointed.
It was near closing time but they managed to accommodate. One of the best waffles so far. It was very satisfying. Can't comment on the other things but will be back one day to try.

Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. The coffee was great and all the little pastries, donuts, biscuits and danishes are really tasty.

I also ordered the mushroom and cheese crepe and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of cheese and mushrooms! If you like cheese ... this is definitely worth a try!
Crabapples For Lunch
Update: we gave this place another shot after seeing that they had updated their opening hours and discount periods. Our previous experience was disappointing and frustrating, with misinformation everywhere.

The ambience here was relaxed, open and vibrant. It was reasonably popular on a weekend lunch with locals and families. The staff were friendly and pleasant to deal with.

We had a jambon complet and a mushroom and cheese crepe. The good thing about the crepes was that they were quite big and filling. The taste was quite mediocre, unfortunately. The crepe skin was quite dry and leathery; we've had different types of crepe and understand there are many variants, but this was not memorable. There was a good amount of ingredients in each crepe but the whole thing tasted quite dense. The shaved cheese they used was also dry from being exposed for too long. The mushroom crepe tasted slightly better because of the addition of truffle flavour. Also, the crepes were left for quite a while before being served to us, so it was barely lukewarm when we ate it.

My wife ordered a sesame latte, which was also average. For dessert, we had a waffle with strawberries, Nutella, snickers, salted caramel and ice cream. Once again, I saw the waffle left there for quite a while before the toppings were added and served to us, so it wasn't warm when we got it. The waffle was also large, and quite light, but the taste was average.

At full price, each crepe/waffle costs $18-20. That's almost double what an average crepe place will charge for one, and in my opinion totally not worth the price. Even at the 40% off discount we used, I'm honestly not tempted to return given the food was quite mediocre.

----------

I have been seeing this place offer EatClub discounts on Saturday evenings from 5-8pm, and was waiting to try it as I'm a big fan of crepes. So we made a booking via EatClub for 6.45pm. Google informed me that the place closes at 6pm, but I checked their website and saw that they listed their closing time as 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays (which would explain their EatClub offer). Surely it would be open since I had made a reservation, right?

Nope. It was closed. If you're going to offer a time-specific discount, make sure you're actually open during those times! And make sure you list your opening hours accurately while you're at it. Even your store name isn't consistent (on some sites and the store front it's listed as Benjamin's cafe).

Benjamin’s crepes and waffles - Albert Park

4

Made the trip to Albert Park for some crepes. ‘Benjamin’s crepes and waffles offered great service and has a nice big outdoor seating area to enjoy crepes and coffee on a nice sunny day.
We ordered the stewed apple crepes with custard and vanilla icecream and the snickers crepes. Both were big portions and super sweet (the snickers crepes was perhaps too sweet with the salted caramel sauce). Will go for the strawberry and Nutella option next time.
Quince And Cheese
Was initially really disappointed to hear this cafe no longer offers a vegan menu (what I came for), but my experience was turned around by the staff's willingness to swap ice cream for vegan gelato, making the meal mostly dairy free.

I tried a cheese and tomato crepe which was by far my favourite thing I ate here, sprinkled with feta and perfectly chewy. For a sweet option, I got the Belgian chocolate with smooth dark choc sauce, strawberries and vegan coconut gelato. The other sweet crepes sounded sickly sweet but this one wasn't too rich.

The restaurant was also willing to make me a chocolate banana milkshake with soy and vegan ice cream instead of dairy. It was thin and not super chocolatey but will had a nice flavour. Anything more probably would have been to much alongside the sweet crepe. Also tried a really nice turmeric latte which comes with soy on default.

I was told the vegan menu was trialled for three months but wasn't getting enough traction to keep up. I would urge the cafe to bring it back but publicise it more. The vegan community in Melbourne is very strong and once people know about a place they're willing to frequent it, but I think they just didn't realise Benjamin's had options.

We have visited Benjamin's twice now and have thoroughly enjoyed the meals. First time around we had 2 serves of the Tim Tam & Dark Chocolate waffles and 1 Strawberry & Rhubarb waffle.

The waffles are a good size and although I could not finish my meal, it is not because it was not delicious, more my tummy could not fit anymore. The chocolate waffles are quite sweet so be prepared for its richness.

The second time, we decided to try something less sweet so we tried the salted banana caramel crepes and waffle and the classic lemon and sugar crepe. All were really tasty!

Everything you would expect from a patisserie. Fresh produce, yummy cakes and great coffee. Albert Park was missing something like this so it's great to now have them in the area.

A cheap option for a feed in Albert Park. Very basic menu, but you get what you pay for I guess!
The service was poor. The lady serving me gave me poor eye contact, was abrupt with her approach, didn’t say “thanks” after I paid and was keen to clear my plates after I finished eating as if she couldn’t wait to get me out. Would rather pay a bit extra to get better quality food and service.
DamoForce Food
They have a few other great venues. They have great goods and are always enjoyed. The Nutella doughnuts are some of the tastiest around. Always enjoyed.
