Working in the area for nearly five years has meant that despite the fact we are now working from home a lot of my life is now geared around this suburb (hairdresser, acupuncturist, facialist etc) so I continue to spend a bit of time in the area and lucky enough most of my favourite dining haunts are still open.
Naturally I stuck with the parma for lunch today (why mess with a winning formula), you can see several photos of different occasions and it’s consistently huge, so definitely good value for money and incredibly filling

We were at Bells last week for a Christmas lunch and experienced one extremely helpful and one quite rude waiter who behaved as though serving us was a huge inconvenience to him. We had the lunch specials today which essentially meant the same huge parma I always order at an even cheaper price. This was amazing value (I assume they don’t do it Friday’s, this was a Thursday) and we had a great leisurely lunch in the sun
Further update
We went to the Bell’s for a farewell lunch week and it remains as delicious as ever. We were sitting inside and as such received table service for the first time and they still allowed us to pay at the bar after which was easier with such a big group. Unfortunately our booking had been misplaced but there was no issue with seating us. I honestly think it’s the yummiest Parma in Melbourne and it’s so damn sizeable I even shared it one time (when I was attempting to diet) and it’s more than sufficient
UPDATE
18 months since my last review and while I’ve been eating there regularly outside or downstairs today I was in the upstairs bar which has had a whopping renovation and is now modern and trendy AF. I am pretty freaking impressed that I can now eat the best parma ever in a nice environment. Very well done!
Original review
I actually love food more than people. So when my colleagues suggest lunch at BH I'm always in. Working nearby the Bells it's a fairly regular port of call as it's got a decent rooftop, a lovely courtyard and everyone's pub favourite the humble parma.
I've literally never ordered anything other than the Parma here (he never goes out of style) but If you don't want your classic Melbournian dish you can go to Greece with saganaki, China with steamed dumplings or Japan with ponzu gyouza (talk about a versatile menu). It's no gastro pub and you will find a sports bar section with some pokies thrown in for good measure but you can avoid these areas and have a pretty pleasant experience
Visited Bells' for a 28th birthday in the Beer Garden. The ambience was great with multiple heaters on the cold cold night. The entry is a bit secluded but when you walk through it is a spectacle. We ordered some wings and aranchini. Their sauces were pretty good.
I tried some of my friends Vodka Cranberry and Long Island. They were pretty standard and were quite nice. They had a wide variety of beers available while I just babysitted a Heineken. Security was present throughout the night and were friendly along with the wait and bar staff.
Great steak specials on Tuesdays. It's actually a quality piece of cow, not like the gristle laden offcuts you often get elsewhere on steak night.
Top venue as well with the rooftop & the garden bar. Not sure what the atmosphere's like on weekends but the facilities are there for some good vibes.
No aircon turned on during a 36 degree day. Chicken was great, but it's pretty hot here. Worth considering the weather before you decide to come here.
This hotel is in South Melbourne and they have pretty decent meals from what I have heard. Here they had $15 main meals for the members of the Crosbie Crew and $15 steak specials. They were pretty huge and I was not in the mood for huge. After all I have had a huge beer, chips and other things earlier on in the day.
Great venue. We were nearby and wanted a nice meal. It was spot on! Great atmosphere, excellent food portion. Perfectly cooked. It has been a while since i have had a true pub style chicken parmi. Service was great also. Very happy we chose here. We will be back again.
P.s. the free phone charging station is a great idea!!
11 of us went for lunch today, everyone raved about their meals :) absolutely delicious. So so good. Will definitely be recommending to friends and will definitely be back.
We’re stretching our legs this week! After a year of attempts pretty much exclusively North of the CBD we decided it was well past due to mix it up, so we loaded up the parma bus and headed to one of the many pubs on our list in South Melbourne – Bells Hotel. The Bells is a pub of many personalities. The front bar is airy and light with plenty of space to breathe, The dining area behind it is classy and elegant and the sports bar is a more casual affair with everything you would need for a day on the punt (with a few pokies thrown in for good measure). In preparation for this review we had heard a lot of rumours about the fantastic outdoor courtyard and unmatched rooftop marquee – Unfortunately Melbourne’s weather was being a harsh bitch on this particular Thursday evening, so persistent rainfall kept us from checking those areas out … Will save them for next time.
Seafood was a hit. A well cooked piece of Barramundi and views to match. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Met a group of 8 here on a week night for a business meeting. The table we got was amazing, a private-ish area to ourselves with ample room to spread out and work. Meals were fantastic, three people has the veal schnitzel and said it was the best they've had. Service was fantastic, we never got forgotten even though we were off by ourselves and plenty off attention, water refills etc. Great place and central location for people coming from both sides of melbourne, will use it again.
Had dinner and drinks at Bells Hotel a few weeks back and would like to say how exceptional the service was!. Staff were afficiant and friendly, food was delicious. Will have to come back again soon. Thinking of trying out the function room for my upcoming birthday.
We hadn't been to Bells in 8 years and wow the renovations are nice. The rooftop bar was perfect for Sunday drinks. Delicious curry & the GM gave us a tour of the place. Attentive and nice relaxed atmosphere.
Nice for lunch. Great place for lunch but servings are MASSIVE.
Awesome service and food. Service here is amazing. The staff are so friendly, attentive and professional. The food here is also superb. Had the chicken, mushroom and sundried tomato risotto and it was really nice!. Had the steaks a few times too and they're always perfectly cooked.
Great casual hotel, nice tasting food ! Good sized servings !
Super feed up. The crispy skin salmon in Asian noodle broth was like nothing I've ever had and it was quality. The broth and noodle worked really well with the bok Choy and salmon. The Sunday roast was also good value for $15. A good fit out of the pub makes it a great spot for a casual feed and drink!
Great pub!. Love the outdoor area! Great variety of food, and cheap beer specials. $4.50 for heineken? yes please!
Nice service, enjoying the roof top area. Good value $24 dollar Tuesday special for steak comes with a drink. Except the steak was a little bit over cooked, but for its great value nothing to complain. Will definitely come more often for drinks and food. The chicken burger is so Beautiful, and the fish and chips.
I was recently at Bells hotel in Main Hall for a 50th. Great service, love the cloth shades over the roof opening. It was a warm night with the full moon shining. Great atmosphere, staff and food. Thank you Bells🙂👍
Can't be more thankful of friendly staffs and management of the Bells Hotel.
I usually go with my dog so he can move around freely and having lots of fun.
Not only love the hospitality but love the food and drinks there. Highly recommend chicken Parma.
Also, if you were looking for an amazing experience of watching sports, Bells Hotel is the best place.
