Review Dumpling World - Melbourne

Winston Ng
Given this place is 'Dumpling World' we should have ordered dumplings. Instead we had 3 lunch rice dishes, Mongolian, braised pork with marinated egg on rice and some kind of chilli chicken stir fry. Meats were cooked through but seemed recently defrosted, especially the pork, slightly worst than a frozen dinner pack from Woolies. The only highlight: duck spring rolls. Might come back to order actual dumplings but 1st and last time for rice dishes.

This was “Special” fried rice. More like pack of frozen mixed veggies and uncle bens rice. Honey chicken was coated in vinegar. Salt & pepper squid was all onion/capsicum/filling on the plate and the dumplings (chicken and prawn) had no prawns in them. Disgusting
Peter McGuinness
We ordered the lemon chicken, wonton noodle soup and fried rice. The lemon chicken sauce tasted like the cleaning product lemon pledge...so awful. The wonton soup tasted..like salt water and the dumplings so mushy. The rice was just mush. I dont leave bad reviews often but i felt you needed to know. This restaurant needs to improve or close. The food was so bad. Avoid if possible.

Cheap and cheerful ... Steamed dumplings are the better ones, rest are average.

Delicious variety of dumplings and other dishes, service is quick and efficient. Great place to drop in for lunch. Price is very reasonable for what you get. They accept cards.

Realy good chinese experience. Loved the veggie dumplings.

Dumplings used to be good (6+ months ago) but are now terrible. Very floury. They have free "Chinese tea" that is now just hot water with zero tea. They have us "soy sauce" that smelled exactly like fish sauce, when we complained they provided a different container that smelled exactly the same. We had to go get our own drinks from the fridge after them saying they'd bring them out. So sad to see a once-good dumpling restaurant go completely down the drain. I thought maybe I had an unlucky experience a couple months ago so am trying again, but it's even worse now.
Andrew Tan
The dirty cardboard on the floor near the inside entrance and the smell at the back of the restaurant should have been a warning. We should have walked out then. Unfortunately the dry, doughy dumplings and unsavoury food didn't redeem the occasion. Would not come back ☹️

Very rude service, dumplings not fully cooked

Last New Year I visited Zhengzhou but had no chance to taste Henan Mutton Noodles. Its been a pity since then, and Ive been looking for Henan restaurant here in Melbourne for the whole past months. And here it is, and reminisces me of the night in Zhengzhou.

Had my rice with spicy tofu and vegetables here and I loved it. Food was fresh and served it less than 5 minutes and didnt compromise on the flavour. The person doing the service was quick and hardworking. The lady at counter was emotionless and while I asked her for some water she pretended as if she was giving gold for free.
Overall a good place worth a second visit.

Been coming here for years for a quick meal before local events. Seems to have changed hands since last visit. We won’t be back. Food was poor - dumplings seemed to be low quality mass produced type, tasteless and rubbery. Main courses were particularly bad, the tofu with vegetables possibly straight from a can. Although the place was almost empty, service was inattentive, and perhaps worst of all, the toilets were very dirty. This was once a great place for a quick, cheap meal and I am sad that it has deteriorated so badly. It will not survive much longer unless there is a leap in the quality of service, food and cleanliness.

Been here quite a few time already. This place is very close to my work place. Its like a dumpling house for me. I always came here for some tasty Dumplings during lunchtime.

The ambience was some what chinese style. Their staff are Lovely as well.

Definitely consider coming back more often in the future.

Terrible rubbery dumplings, with almost no meat inside. Tastes like half a teaspoon of cat food rolled in dough. Pepper chicken was woefully disappointing with greasy chicken wings with more bone than meat, only 5 pieces of chicken with mainly clumpy steamed rice. definitely stay away from this place.

This dumpling restaurant is very close to my work and a quick option for lunch. Most of the time it is fine, as I only normally order take away lunch of steamed dumplings. However, the last 2 times I have ordered take away lunch, firstly I waited about half an hour for steamed pork dumplings, to the point I asked for my money back as I had to get back to work, secondly they mucked my order up and never even cooked what I asked for. If you want to eat in, the chairs scrape on the concrete floor which is very loud and so noisy. The service you get is terrible. Myself and a friend ordered two meals to share between us plus Jasmin tea. We got the dumplings first with no plates or eating utensils. I had to go and ask and by that time the dumplings (which by the way have got worse, wrapper is too thick and not much meat inside) were cold. They delivered the last plate which was supposed to be vegetable noodles but was instead rice. They took that away and we waited another 10 minutes or so for the noodle dish. We then had to ask for the tea. All in all a bad experience the last few times. They do not have enough staff to cope, they don't understand english very well and they don't seem to care about the service they provide. Do not eat here. Believe all of the negative reviews. They are true. I will not be back.

We go there for lunch a lot. Their pork dumplings are delicious and their spring onion pancakes are flaky and yummy! Tea is not included, but prices are cheap.
Peterrabbit
Worst dumpling place ever. We came here for a team lunch once and some of the steamed pork dumpling we ordered from the yum cha menu were undercooked. I will never return.
Dante Alejandrino
Service was decent. Did not have to wait long but that was probably because there were not a lot of customers that time. I ordered pork and prawn dumplings. The dough was thick and there was a small amount of meat in the dumpling. The prawn was dry and was half the size of a corn kernel. Go somewhere else if your are craving for a good dumpling or yum cha.

Delicious Vegetarian Pan Fried Dumplings and Vegetarian Fried Rice. Hubby has had the Pork & Prawn and loved them as well. Reasonably priced and they since renovated
Justin
Food was very average and the kitchen had a bad smell coming from it. The dumplings have very thick skin and not very much meat. I would highly recommend going elsewhere.

This restaurant has recently been renovated, so I thought I'd give it a try. The decor was good but the food was pretty average. The fried rice tasted like old oil from an old pan, which wasn't great. If they cleaned the pan, I'm sure the ingredients would speak for itself. The Shanghai steamed dumplings took 30minutes to get to my table and they were average. Really thick and the inside had a slimy texture. I also hate it when places do not take card below $20 minimum, especially when you are not aware when you order. I also don't tend to spend $20 on my lunch but had to in this case because I saw someone have the same issue when paying. Very frustrating. Overall this place could be better but was very disappointing.
The Dear Luncher
The Dear Luncher has visited Dumpling World on several occasions. Both before and after the new fit-out/renovation. First let's just say that the new digs look great. Sleek new tables and chairs. But has the food improved? Not much, it has to be said. The dumplings are still not up there with some of the better types you can get around Melbourne town, but they pass. The fillings always just seem a little on the firm side, which does provide an impression that they are frozen not fresh. The impression may or may not be the reality, but that's just the whole vibe, the Mabo about the situation. Also experienced on this most recent visit was the lemon chicken. An unremarkable dish it has to be said, perhaps this was due punishment for ordering such a dish? Punishment accepted, the meal was still finished. The lemon ooze that the chicken found itself in was extremely pungent. Rating lifted from 2.0 to 2.5 due to the new renovation, but still a place Your Dear Luncher will only visit due to sheer convenience.

The worst service, the worst dumpling!

Really wondering how it is still open.

Quarreling at kitchen, rude to the customers and they just don't care what they are doing.

Don't waste your money and time.

Woeful dinner. A friend of mine and I were going next door but it was packed so we ended up here. Mmnn

It took us a while for the 2 waitresses to take our order initially. Then we ordered we were asked if we wanted extra rice? We asked if the dish came w rice and we got no answer.

The main came our first, beef w chinese broccoli and oyster sauce.

Then the rice came a couple of minutes later and we had to ask for bowls etc haha

Then the chicken San Choy Bow arrived, which was our entree dish. After that the duck dumplings came hahaha

Oh can I have the beer that I ordered w some water for my friend? Wow!! Lol

The food was very very ordinary. The beef was alright but a bit chewy.

The San choy bow wasn't good! Enough said.

The rice glutinous and gluggy.

The steamed dumplings had really thick rice flour and were gluggy and heavy.

Disappointing night! But my footy team won... YAY HAHAHA

The worst dumpling I ever had.
dough was thick.
staffs was unfriendly and unenthusiastic
pork in xiao longbao was stink.
will not come back again

I stopped by here for a quick snack/meal (Nov 2016). It's a no frills spot that serves up northern style Chinese food.

Don't expect anything fancy here and you'll be right. I would suggest you stick mostly to dumplings and you will be just fine :)
The other meals I saw didn't look particularly special.

Verdict: awesome spot for a quick fix of Northern Chinese dumplings.

I do not often write bad reviews, this is actually the first time.
As I am originally from China, I understand the Chinese food in Australia can not be good as in China. But this restaurant is way too under the standard that I have to let people know do not waste your money there.
We ordered pork cabbage dumplings and deep fried dumplings plus seafood and veg combination rice. The dumplings were too salty and the rice was very plain.
The stuff was not very interested in serving us and what was even worse was when I wanted to pay, the girl who was setting the table asked me to wait until she finished. Mind you there were only two tables of customers there.
Do not go there, you will regret as we did.

Unfortunately the quality and taste are seriously way too underwhelming. None of the dishes we ordered were satisfactory. I don't like to be rude but we really wanted to puke when we were eating here. Ordered a bowl of beef and pickled vegetable noodle soup, a small bowl of seaweed & egg soup, a beef brisket on rice and a set of xiao long bao's. The noodle soup was probably the only one that I found to be slightly more edible, since you can't really go wrong with those ingredients. However they chucked in enough noodles to feed two people and didn't bother giving any other seasoning and just the plain noodles with a bland soup and everything else cluttered at the sides. Well, at least it made me full. The beef brisket on rice was horrendous and every single piece of meat was like the fattiest I've seen after ordering this dish at many different restaurants and it's just impossible to eat them all without feeling repugnant. I didn't even bother taking a photo of it. The seaweed & egg soup was just simple and bland with a lot of flour added in to create a more starchy and slimy texture, yuck. As for the highlight of the meal, the xiao long bao's, they were practically some of the worst ones I've had in my life and any Chinese person who has appreciation and standards for xiao long bao would cringe at those. The skin was pretty much inedible for me and so thick that I felt like I was eating rubber. In the end I had to tear out the skin and only eat the pork filling inside to save myself from suffering and not waste food at the same time. This place has a good location and okay interior but the food is simply the biggest let-down. Maybe it's acceptable to those who are not picky but for us, never again.

While the food came out quickly, service was not great and food was below average. Between 3 of us we ordered 3 serves of assorted dumplings. In all 3, the ratio of meat to dough was terrible and all the dumplings seemed over cooked. The dough was breaking at the seams which caused the meat to fall out when you picked up the dumpling.

Definitely give this one a pass.

I normally don't have any dumpling in a Chinese restaurant because most of them don't do hand made dumpling but just buy the frozen from Chinese groceries. So it's a little bit strange that I make this comment for non-dumpling dishes for a restaurant called 'Dumpling World'.
The rice dishes are what I always order because you don't have to spend long time on waiting. Just think this is a kind of Chinese fast food, so it's very suitable for the people working around this place and don't have too much time on their lunch.
Their special fried rice is ok and not expensive only around $13 sth as far as I could remember.
So if you are not too picky, it's still ok to have a quick meal there.

Very nice place for a nice homely meal! The shanghai dumplings were delicious, as were the fried onion pancake. The kids wanted to come back for more. Service was very food, staff were very polite and helpful. Been here two days in a row.

Been here twice. Won't return. Grabbed takeaway both times and the dumplings and noodles are horrible. Really thick dumping wrap /dough and noodles that felt like 2 minute ones. Blah.

Being a vegetarian it's always difficult to find a good veg dumpling. Dumpling world have an amazing vegetarian dumpling bursting with flavour. Sure the decor is like being at a food hall but the service is great and attentive and my meat eating friends love the menu options.
Faye
Staff was pleasant but service was a bit slow. We had 3 servings of pan fried dumplings and 2 servings of noodles. Some of the dumplings were overcooked but still edible. Spent $60 divided by 5 people.

Awful value for money.... This is my first urbanspoon review, after using the website a few times a week. I usually dont bother with this- but im sitting here pretty bummed out that i spent 16 bucks on the "asian greens and black mushrooms" and actually had to stop at a 7/11 to buy some noodles because there was litrally eff all in there. 16 bucks, came in a usual takeaway container half full. With one bunch of Bok choy and 3 small mushrooms. i kid you not.Im happy to spend 16 bucks on vegies but honestly full my goddamn container up chumps.
ps. maybe just get dumplings. they're usually like 9 bucks for 15. im sure thats better value.

Not a nice dining experience at all.... food bland or overcooked in old oil... overpriced as well 3.60 for 2 spring rolls... (small)...

POOR SERVICE AND STAFF ATTITUDE, VERY AVERAGE FOOD !!! NEVER AGAIN!. We pre-booked our meals for lunch time, providing a list with clearly marked the meal number and description for each person (about 20 of us) as they appeared on their menu. The staff did not (or was unable to) follow the instruction on the list: 2 meals not matching the order were delivered, then (relunctantly) replaced with the correct ones. The service was inconsistent and very poor, the staff unfriendly. We were billed and HAD TO PAY for 3 extra meals (1 earlier emergency cancellation given with ample time, and the 2 meals incorrectly delivered). The food was very average.

-----24 Jul, 2014-----

POOR SERVICE AND STAFF ATTITUDE, VERY AVERAGE FOOD !!! NEVER AGAIN!. Highly Recommended

I went with a group of friends - one of them had highly recommended them. I was a little stand offish as I have not had very nice dumplings in the past. We ordered a range from the Beef & Onion,Pork, Prawn & Chicken Deep fried to crab & pork steamed. They were amazing - as a general rule I dont usually eat Pork but the fried dumplings were to die for!! A personal favorite being the Prawn and Chicken!! The prices were also fabulous! $9 for 15 fried dumplings!! Get in my belly!! Did not disappoint and will definitly be back!!

Yum Yum Yum. I was a little concerned after reading previous reviewed, but I found this place amazing. We got fried and steamed dumplings and they were fresh and had plenty of flavour. Was a perfect balance of dough and filling. Staff was funny and were accommodating to me and my noisy friends. Was such a cheap night out and we all left with bellies full, ready to explode from over-eating. I just couldn’t stop eating.
- Only disappointment was they had sold out of vegetarian dumplings
- Will be back for sure and highly recommend

Great value for money. Whilst not the most overwhelming venue, the dumplings represent real value for money. The fried pork and prawn are a huge meal (15 of them) and probably too much for lunch, but I'm not going to complain that I got too much. They were hot, fresh and nice and crunchy on the bottom whilst still quite soft on top. Unlike many places they weren't doughy and they had heaps of fillings. As with all things, you get what you pay for but in this case, I'd compare these particular dumplings to the equivalent at Hutong and based on price, Dumpling World wins.

No, just no. $22 for dumplings that have more dough than meat and rice thats filled with peas and is over powered with that weird Chinese sausage taste. The dumplings taste like hot dogs.

I wouldn't want to sit down and have a meal there. No decor, boring and dirty.

Service is meh. Staff are friendly enough but only speak to each other or other Asian customers. When not talking they're playing on their phones or eating at the back table while you sit and wait half an hour by yourself near the register for your own dinner.

Im still trying to understand how they are in business considering the place is so dead. Two chances from me is enough.

Food is of average taste and price. It took a third of my lunch hour for my order to arrive. The venue is only a third full. Will be looking for another dumpling place
Anakie77
Not much of a dumpling world with only a few options of dumplings, however the prawn and chicken fried dumplings are to die for! I go once a week, can't get enough!
Spadian
Try the dumplings. You will walk out full and satisfied for $10. Don't expect te flower drum but do good heap dumplings you can't go wrong
Wannabe Foodie
Terrible, we have been here twice now and both occasions staff are rude, food is expensive, $22 for prawns and $14 for broccoli, dumplings are average, you can buy better frozen from the supermarket. Plenty of other great places to eat before you go here.... Try next door for the best (and cheapest) Japanese in town.
Rennie
Didn't have a great experience the first time I had lunch here, but returned with some lunch colleague's for a quick and cheap meal. I soon remembered why I didn't enjoy my first visit starting with the sticky tables, grimy menus and staff that couldn't speak English; lucky we had someone with us that could translate for us. The meals aren't anything special, sure you can get 12 dumplings for under ten dollars....but they're nothing special and you can get much better quality dumplings for a couple of extra dollars. Really nothing appealed to me, mostly bland and poorly presented dishes, you'd be better to find another restaurant with better quality for a couple extra dollars!

As far as cheap dumpling houses go this one does the trick.
Terry Hastings
Never again. For the second time in three weeks I have had the experience of my order being misplaced and while the others at my table have been served. Both times it has been up to me to bring this to the attention of the staff after everyone else had mostly finished (10-15 minutes). I recommend that people not go there anytime around lunch because it appears that the chef is forgetful or just cant read an order. Will not use this restaurant again

No Stars as the service outweighs any positive that the food has. With todays effort once it had been bought to their attention the order was slapped together and not fully cooked.
Regina Gunawan Lee
Felt stalked. Apart from the bad food, i was sitting there feeling like the staff was watching me eat the whole time!! seriously the most uncomfortable experience i've ever had in a restaurant. doesn't help that i was the only customer there.
Juliet Gavens
SOOOO disappointed !. Having just started working down the "bottom" end of Collins Street, I was SO excited to realize that Dumpling World was right on my doorstep.
I ventured down there this week and ordered the Xiao Long Bao, my absolute favorite dumplings of all time.
How do I describe the disappointment?
The skins were thick and chewy, the filling was absolutely solid and tasteless, not a slurp of soup in sight !
Back to the drawing board. .....................

Very unimpressed. Not exactly sure why my SO and I decided to eat at this establishment for dinner. I was hesitant because there weren't many people and it was Friday 8pm. Bad sign, right? But my SO was convinced he had the most amazing pork belly and rice there so I went along with it.

I settled on oyster beef noodles and my SO couldnt find pork belly on the menu, so he decided to enquire the waiter about it. I *HATE* when waiters dont know the content of their menu. It just screams unprofessional to me. If it's not on the menu, why not (i) just ask the chef to see what he can arrange, OR (ii) let my SO know that there are other pork dishes available. Instead, the waiter scanned both menus and said "No pork belly." Okaayyy? When my SO asked for a pork dish recommendation, the waiter just proceeded to point out the only 2 pork dishes on the menu. Not exactly a recommendation - more like his only 2 choices.

The food came surprisingly quick which obviously meant it wasn't fresh. For a pork dish of that price, it looked surprisingly underwhelming and low quality. My oyster beef noodle came in a large dish and smelled delicious... but tasted just like hot water! And the noodles they used were highly uncomplementary. Even the beef had no taste.

The annoying part was that there were no utensils on our table and my SO was only given one spoon, and I was only given one fork. I guess cleaning up an extra fork and spoon was too difficult for them?

Also, it kind of bothered me that the waitress who served our dishes didnt use any sort of tray.. her fingers were all up in our dishes :/ And while we ate, I noticed she used her fingers to scratch her *private down there area* as well as her nose... GROSS!

Definitely not coming here again.
StickAForkInIt
Average. I've tried both the Dan Dan noodles and Fishy Flavored Pork. While neither are up to the standard you would get somewhere like Sichuan House they can be a welcome last resort in the culinary wasteland of the 'Bottom End'. A further visit encountered a disappointing Kung Po chicken and burnt fried dumplings with a poor pastry to filling ratio.
Jeff
Decent dumplings, really cheap. Great lunch spot for this end of the city, and well needed addition to the usual docklands spots. Pot stickers and spring onion pancakes are delicious. Basic but done right.
Deng
So far not good. Due to working close to here I decided to try the dumplings here....was a bad idea. there was way too much dough and the the insides were not as juicy as other dumplings places. After the first experience I thought to try something else on the menu. I tried the chicken wonton noodle soup....aww was I wrong to try this. The wontons had barely any meat inside and the soup tasted like water....never in my life will I eat here again.
