Review Ichi Maki - Melbourne

Very solid high quality Japanese takeout. The bento boxes are really top notch and plentiful, the crispy salmon don was probably one of the best meals I've had at at a Japanese place.

For the quality of the food, I give it 3 stars as it’s more like a takeaway joint, for the price It deserves 4 stars. Can’t ask for more for what you have to pay! $17 for a bento box and miso soup, and all comes out piping hot!

Food is good. Can explore wide Japanese items. Bento is very full for 1 person even noodles like udon or Ramen.

All dishes are fresh and delicious, great value for money. Service is always fast and friendly, can be crowded at meal times but never too long wait for food

Ordered veg bento and salmon bento. Tasted really good. If you want to customise your dish or want to replace anything they are quite welcoming.

Get the pork katsu curry. Chicken udon a bit bland but we like it

Teriyaki Don was AMAZING! And super quick service! Highly recommend and will bring the whole family back soon. Bravo!!

Bland and basic. I ordered a vegatarian bento box which was ok. The Curried tofu, kimchi and califonian roll were all ok. The tempura was shedded vegetables in batter. The Vegetarian don was very bland, a few pieces of tofu with Steamed Zuccini, carrots, cauliflower and little asian mushroom. Fresh but bland.

3.5

Bento boxes and the occasional naughty Katsu Don are the main reason I come to this crowded noisy acoustically challenged restaurant close to to Marvel stadium. It is so busy at lunchtime that it's like a seas of people all focused on different missions. Upstairs is where I ended up sitting. Seating downstairs is quite limited but grab it if you can. Just make sure you let them know if you end up down there or they'll wander around upstairs looking for you. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bento box which also came with gyoza, crumbed potato cake and spring rolls.

My dining buddy ordered the vegetarian bento box which was IMO a far superior assortment of goodies... I’ll have to get that one next time.

Date visited: 04/10/2018

THIS IS NOT A FULL MAIN MEAL REVIEW
This Japanese restaurant is built in to (adjoining) the Melbourne West police station so you probably would not even know it's there. Rather small restaurant but can seat around 10 ppl.
OMG the amount of food that they serve in this store is HUGE. Too much for me to list so you just have to check out the pictures on Zomato. I did not order a main meal due to a big day of eating but I wanted to try this place as I was in the hotel across the road & it was my last night in Melbourne.

I ordered 2 chicken Dim Sims & some pan fried pork Gyoza's. The dim sims were beautiful probably right on pair with South Melb. dim sims. Really big. Plus I normally only like vegetable Gyoza's but these pork one's were great. Wish I had have gone there the first couple of days I was in Melbourne :(
Staff were very friendly. Only bad thing is that they close at 8pm nightly so no late night munchies. Cant wait to try again. If you like Japanese dishes & not into the whole full-on Japanese restaurant scene than trust me try this place.
BTW I am not a sushi person but the different/amount of sushi they had available was amazing. So if your a sushi person this place is for you. If your staying in the Latrobe st/Spencer st/King st area forget all the other places & go here.
Hope this review helps some one :)

Ratings:
FOOD: 7.5/10
STAFF: 7.5/10
ATMOSPHERE: 6.5/10
LOCATION: 8.0/10 (if your staying in this area) 4.0/10 (if staying further in the city)
PRICE: $

OVERALL: 7.0/10

I had a generous bento box which came with teppan fried rice, teriyaki salmon, tofu tempura in curry sauce, salad, and pickles, and it was really nice. Service was quick and friendly. A good place to have some quick lunch

I had the the salmon teriyaki bento, which came with rice, teriyaki salmon, salmon sushi and sashimi, and some pickles. The combination was good and tasty, and service was real quick

In our short 4 days visiting Melbourne, my family visit this place twice. The gyoza was delicious, the vegetables & meat fresh, all nicely cooked. The price is affordable and the staff very nice :)

Tried a box and the rice was hard. Salmon was thick cut and mushy. The sushi was decent but the avocado was starting to brown. Prices are kind of pricey but the service is ok. Ambience wise, the place is quite dark and the windows are dark tinted.

Even though it is a japanese restaurant, I come here for lunch and get the chicken and prawn rice paper rolls with peanut sauce. Food is fresh and affordable. Highly recommend if you want to try something different other than sushi or bento box. Have tried the sushi and its good as well.

Extremely good sushi here, everything is super fresh, do try the salmon rolls and the seared salmon sashimi pieces, will certainly be back to try the bento box

I come here quite a bit, the dons are really great, and the fried selections from the counter are tasty and of quite good value too, the staff are friendly, and always on hand to help.

.5 taken off for possibly the worst Gyoza ever.

.5 taken off for the lengthy wait on fried rice specifically in busy periods

Good place for a quick fix of Japanese bento box. Friendly service. Takes card and cash. Take away available. Freshly cooked at a great price.

Extremely busy at lunchtime with many locals getting their favourite. I popped in 11.45am and lucky enough to find a table downstairs. Overall I felt they worked very efficiently, plenty of staff at hand.
GOOD selection of sushi, sashimi packs, bento's and hot dishes.
My meal came out SUPER quick. I ordered the chicken fried rice. Tasty.
CHILLI: They asked if I wanted some, I said yes please. I felt there was nothing in it. If you want a good chilli hit, looks like you need to tell them!
I will return when next in Docklands for a bento box or another dish.

Very popular Japanese restaurant with a number of specialty Japanese dishes. Their service is quite prompt and orderly. In rush office lunch hours, they really make things proper without any glitch. Food quality is also good and consistent. I like bento boxes, curry chicken don and various sushis.

Came for a quick dinner before the football, as the stadium has limited food options. Here I found they had a nice variety of menu options and had pretty decent prices. Ordered a bento which was roughly $14. And cAme with a teriyaki chicken, sashimi, salad, and fried rice. They have lots of seating available inside, both upstairs and downstairs.. Food didn't take too long to come out after we ordered at the counter. Pretty average meal, but still nice enough. And looked pretty good too.
Food-ing
Came here for lunch and was really happy with the food, the service and the atmosphere. Can get really busy during on weekdays at lunch time but the traffic moves relatively fast so the wait isn't too long for a table. Ordered the gyu tan don and have ordered this many times for lunch. Its got that great spicy kick which I love and it's well marinated too. Only negative I can think of is that the consistency of the rice varies each time I go. Some days it's really soft, other days it's a bit grainy - like there wasn't enough water added to it. Other than that, it is a good lunch option for those on that side of town.

Not the best Japanese food, but the ramen is delicious. Stay away from the gyoza, they're some of the worst I've had - the flavour is just off somehow.

Came here during lunch time. Friendly staff and reasonable price. I got one sushi which was average and the ox tounge that was nice but a bit salty. My friend had the udon and some fried vegetables that did worth the price. I think I need to revisit before final say but it has been alright so far.

Reasonable prices for Japanese food in the city. I had the Japanese pancake for $5 which was quite big. There was a generous amount of sauce and I felt full afterwards. I also had sushi but I wasn't that impressed with the flavours - kind of tasted like it was a pack from woolies. It was very busy during lunchtime but staff were very quick and attentive to place your order.
