Always good coffee, always fast service and the owner always remembers your coffee order. Much better than any of the cafe's across the road at Collins Place, who have a sour and rushed attitude.

Good coffee and scrolls. I was a regular at Engels. Their coffee was superb every time and staff were friendly. The Cinnamon Scroll was really nice; it was more the yeast based Cinnamon Scroll (as I have found out, there are different variations on the "Cinnamon Scroll") with chopped walnuts, sugar and cinnamon in the scroll and a lovely sugary glaze on top.

I no longer frequent there as I work in the opposite end of the CBD, but am sure the staff are still friendly, coffee still good and Cinnamon Scroll still selling. Actually went there late last year to satisfy my craving for their Cinnamon Scroll and the lady still remembered the coffee I use to order (soy flat white no sugar) even though I hadn't been there for months. I really miss their coffee and scroll.

Sanger-centric cafe. Since returning to Australia, I've eaten more of what Americans would call "Canadian bacon" (and Canadians label "back bacon") than I ever did in Canada. The cured pork product that Australians describe as "streaky bacon" is the worldwide standard for baconbaconbacon, even in Europe. But here, slices of that ham/bacon hybrid rule the brekky table and "Australian pizza" topping combo. Along with that other Holy Grail of Aussie food, fried eggs. Not that there's anything wrong with them!

I had a wonderful bacon-and-egg toastie on Turkish bread at Engels Espresso with my morning flat white the other day. The bread was buttered and heated briefly so it was soft; the egg and bacon filled the sanger. All it lacked was a splash of hot sauce to make it perfect. At $4.50, it was twice as good as a prosciutto and cheese baguette that cost me twice as much the day before at a fancy French-ish place near Prahran. The mug of flat white ($4.20) was huge, one of the larger coffees I've had here. Engels uses Vittoria beans, and it was on the mellow side, but with enough punch to the taste so it wasn't all cafe au lait-like.

Engels looked quite popular for brekky when I was there around 9 a.m. They're more focused on sandwiches than pastry. I was going to be fussed about the service, because one of the counter ladies ordered me to go outside and sit at a table on the footpath where another waitress had deposited my coffee. (It was a gorgeous morning so I chose to eat out there.) I thought she was being narky, but she just didn't want me being a Wally underfoot as other patrons were piling in. When the over-filled mug of coffee spilled a bit due to an unstable table, she insisted on coming out a second time (after delivering the sanger) to wipe it up, even though I told her not to be bothered. So good on 'em for the service. I don't know what Marx and Lenin would think, but Engels pleased this member of the petit bourgeoisie.

Lovely coffee shop in Melbourne CBD. The staff are really friendly and the cup of tea and Croissant I had were delicious. The staff give you a complimentary glass of sparking water. There are tables inside or outside the cafe to enjoy your drinks and food. I will definitely be back next time I visit the city.

✩ A staple cafe in the Paris-end of Collins Street. ✩ Really glad that it now offers oat milk for all of us non-dairy drinkers! ✩ Staff are very friendly and accomodating. ✩ If you're lucky enough to pop in during a quiet period, there's some indoor seating for you to sit and enjoy your coffee, pastry and "The Big Issue" magazine (which you can purchase from a friendly, nearby vendor).

What a great place. Went to find another coffee shop but it was closed. Decided to try Market Lane, what a good decision. Great service & the best coffee for a long time. Highly recommended.

Sat in this morning at the Collins St branch and aside from the amazing coffee the service was superb - after overhearing us talking about how you could really taste the fruity notes in our longboard blacks, the woman came over and gave us a free sample of another coffee - so thoughtful!

Nice little place at the top of Collins st. Lovely ambient music playing as I entered. One is given complimentary glass of sparkling water with their coffee, always an impressive touch. My coffee was silky strong and utterly quite faultless and gorgeous. Service was quiet warm and lovely. I’ll return for sure.

Absolutely loved the vibe of this speciality coffee cafe. The coffee was fantastic, a rich and golden blend. A delicious crusty croissant and friendly service delivered all with a smile. Bought a little take home pack of beans too. Images are copyright.
