Everything was hot, crispy fresh and on time when delivered. 6 seafood, meat or vegie dishes; 2 chosen for you and 4 to select out of 24 varieties with the addition of 2 large containers of rice for $100 DELIVERED within 5km or $10 extra If more than 5km... Amazing.
The prescribed chicken ribs with spicy salt was golden crispy and salty.. tasty, not too spicy; a favourite of my chicken loving family. Garlic fried Chinese green was kailan which was delicious; not too oily. We selected seafood combination with tofu which was the favourite of the night; big delicious seafood with golden tofu in a delicious sauce. Prawn (with shell) with vermicelli was cooked well and the prawns were gigantic. Fish fillet in batter with sweet corn sauce was lovely fresh and crispy. The sauce was packed separately so no soggyness and for those that didnt like corn they could just have the golden crispy juicy fresh boneless fish. Satay beef was a very big serve of thinly sliced beef and vermicelli.
We could not finish this delicious feast and have loads for lunch tomorrow. All of it was packaged well so things that were meant to be crispy stayed crispy. . We were all very happy and will get this again. The only thing that would make this meal perfect would be prawn crackers.
I have been taking away the roasted stuff for years. Pre-order then for Chinese New Year’s Eve family dinner. It’s almost a family tradition. Always good. Unsure why the ratings are so low. It’s not fine dinning here but I find the staff are friendly. They will chat with you if you strike a conversation with them.
If you’re willing to look past the daggy decor, this place has some of the best roast meats in Melbourne. If ordering from the menu, stick to the recommended dishes - some of the less common items can be pretty ghastly. Overall a good feed.
If I don't feel like cooking and need to bring a dish to share, I always end up getting their roast BBQ for takeaway. Super flavorsome and juicy meat, love their Char Siu and Crispy Pork. Fresh as always. Remember to bring cash with you as they accept cash only.
Decided to give this restaurant a try despite its low rating. We ordered pork siu mai, roast duck, steamed barramundi & stir fry seasonal veg (not in photo). Food was not the best but they were all good (definitely not at 2.5 rating level) & worth it, except for the vegetables which weren’t worth its price in my opinion. However I’d come back for the fish & duck! 👌🏼
Went for yum cha earlier today and bought some takeaway roast duck and char siu pork. All very tasty. The dim sum are selected from the menu rather than choose from trolley. I actually prefer this approach rather than have to wait for the trolley to come around. The roasted meats were good especially the char siu.
Dining in Glenwaverly for a long time have never considered this place as a dining option! They were open till late and after a recommendation I tried it out. The menu definitely has some interesting dishes. One of the specials ordered was the wagyu which I thought was well cooked and boosted great flavour!
Probably one of the few places that have good charsiu, very tender and long strips and for lunch, if you do takeaway and buy two boxes of rice, they give you a discount (2 for $20) but if you do noodles, it is slightly dearer. I've heard that sometimes it does depend on which server you get though. Have had their yumcha before but it was a while ago. From memory it was average.
This place is not cheap but boy did we have a good comforting meal here. We had just got back from a long day at the tennis and decided to stop for some familiar chinese food. We ordered a braised pork belly dish in claypot, snowpeas leaves with garlic, chicken ribs in salted egg yolk and instead of rice decided on a serve of noodles with ginger as a side dish. Lets just say we ordered well that night and our tummies were so very happy. Check out these photos! (Sorry we forgot about the chicken ribs)
Service is a bit average. The waiters seem unhappy a lot of the time. The atmosphere at times is negative.
In saying that though the food is actually pretty good. Spicy qual, singapore noodles. All your standaed dishes are pretty good.
Qual is a bit different compared to the other restaurants along kingsway. It has more batter and more spicier.
The food here is fairly consistent.
Never fails for Cantonese food. Amazing roast
Pork as always. However it is a bit too salty every time even when I requested not too salty. But it is authentic Cantonese food so I tried to compromise every time...... 😞
I've only tried the BBQ dishes of this restaurant, they're pretty decent. The roast duck was cooked perfectly, the skin was crispy while the actual meat was juicy and moist, the seasoning was on point as well.
Dinner tonight was yum! We had the salt steamed chicken which had a great ginger spring onion sauce. The chicken was tender and very tasty. We also had the fried tofu with chili salt. The tofu was crunchy on the outside, pillowy on the inside. Next came the duck filleted with taro. Classic Cantonese. My fav was also the braised pork belly with pickled mustard greens. The pork was soft and tender with the mustard balancing the fat well. To complement all the meat, was green Chinese broccoli flashed fried with prawn cakes. Great meal, glad we came.
Small, simple place. But they serve amazing duck! It's juicy and tasty. Yam cha in the mornings are pretty good too, however, they don't have much variety.
I've been to ocean king more than a handful of times over the years for different things. The main dishes at dinner and lunchtime are the real highlight-the Chinese food is of a good standard, though there is better around.
The yum cha on a weekday is not bad. They are a bit tardy to open up shop and get organised, so I wouldn't stress about waiting by the door. The lai wong bao was very nice, the best of the lot. Hum sui goh, chive dumpling, siu mai and calamari tentacles were all quite decent. The hum sui goh had BBQ pork and shrimp inside which I hadn't seen before. The biggest letdown was the pork wrapped in beancurd skin, possibly the worst I've had. The char siew sou was bursting with filling, but lacked crispiness and the filling was very sweet. Made it a little sickly and it didn't taste fresh.
When it comes to BBQ meat, I think there isn't a huge difference in quality across all the places in Kingsway. In my experience though, Ocean King is fairly consistent with the quality they serve up. It tends to be better to buy on its own to take away.
Group booking. Went as part of a large group recently. The set menu was pretty good, especially the soup, and they managed the special dietry needs without a hitch.
Excellent food, average service, but worth it!. Typically with a chinese restaurant, you wouldn't expect five-star, fine-dining service. Ocean King has quick, efficient (but sometimes a tad rushed) service, cutting the chit-chat and pleasantries.
Food is extremely quick and can come out within 5-10 minutes of ordering. Fantastic if you're looking for a quick, satisfying meal before a movie at Century City Walk.
Pricing is fair/average. However, considering there's always free soup, prawn crackers, dessert, tea and $2 per-head rice, it's very good value.
Quality is excellent. in the early evening, the roast pork is deliciously moist and crispy. Other favourite dishes are the salted egg chicken ribs, shredded duck jellyfish pickle salad and the pippies/cockles in XO sauce.
Worthed to revisit. The only best thing about this restaurant is the roast pork and bbq pork, I think it's the best in Melbourne!!! The roast pork skin is crispy and based on my eating experience the fat layers are consirable thin which shows they know on how to roast the pork.
Other foods taste too salty and too much corn starch, many times oily.
In terms of service, I have to agree with others that this restaurant has a horid service. But, visitors can't expect much for good service at Hong Kong restaurants right from the time you enter it. You will get the same quality of service if you are visiting several Hong Kong restaurants like Pacific Place (unfortunately their food is terrible and many times I found their plates and bowls are oily) and Ling Nam at China Town. Bad service is compensated by time, you will get your meals within less than 15 minutes.
In terms of price, slightly over priced.
Overall, I am still going back to Ocean King for its roast and bbq pork.
Service not 5 star but makes up for it with great roast meats. Roast pork is best in Melbourne.
Yes it's a bit overpriced but if you want school Chinese this place is great. Lots of classics which are tasty. Enjoyed the service with a nice buzzing atmosphere.
May favorit Restaurant. I have been at Ocean King for lunch today with friends. We enjoyed our lunch, Excellent Roast Duck, Roast pork with vegetables and rice. We were served tea OOlon our usual and the best.
I was surprised when I was told by my friend about some negative rating about this restaurant. Totally out of character from our experience. We have been eating there for past three and half years at least once a week and have nothing but the best of prise for the staff and the quality of service and food. I had my own restaurant in Melbourne in the 60’s and have been eating out weekly for the past 50 years and it is hard to find a restaurant to get used to on price and quality of food and service. I have found Ocean King 3 and half years ago and I could not fault it not once in that time. But then I like Chinese food, Chinese people and my wife is Chinese so how can I be wrong. Maybe those that may have bad experience should try it again. Cheers! From AussieCro
Authentic experience. Very surprised at the low rating - scrolled down and saw the comments and all the reasons were valid.. but the dining experience is what you would get if you went to any busy Cantonese restaurant.
Have been a number of times over 3-4 years and never been disappointed with the quality of the food or the service.
For those who have never had a proper experience in a Cantonese restaurant:
1. You will be seated and asked if you want tea - in most places they will charge you for tea. Ocean King doesn't.
2. They expect to take your order fairly prompty as they will assume you are HUNGRY.
3. The soup at the start, the prawn crackers and the dessert are complimentary.. so how can you gripe about how fast they serve it? You would rather have nothing? Few restaurants still do this.
4. It is standard everywhere to charge for white rice. Most fancy places charge you PER BOWL. $2 per head is fair
5. They will clear bowls away quickly, but by the same token if you ever need anything put your hand up and they will get it to you. More attention >>> less attention.
6. At the end of the meal they've never made any comments for us to leave; we've taken as much time as we wanted, had some tea and left in our own time.
If you don't want an authentic Cantonese experience don't go!! You will end up angry and frustrated at what you feel is "poor" service.
This place has had more highs than lows over the years. I definitely wouldn’t have given this place 5 stars 6 months ago that’s for sure (it would have been more like 2 stars to be completely honest). But now that the Crown Palace crew have merged and shaken things up, things are definitely much better.
We’re regulars for their exceptional yum cha which is underrated and so much better than their counterparts a couple of shops down. And their lobster noodles and BBQ meats are a must.
Ocean king is awesome!!! We had a half duck which was delicious and a a live mud crab cooked Singaporean style. It was amazing. I've had a few great grab dishes but this one was easily the best in recent memory. The staff were lovely and helpful. Overall a fantastic place to visit in Glen Waverley
Had takeaway from here, had the spicy salt chicken ribs, Pineapple and sliced chicken fried rice, Shredded roast duck and pickled veg noodles and the Shanghai fried noodles. All were $10 each, a great deal for lockdowns and portion sizes were quite generous for the price. There are many different dishes to choose from for $10. The chicken ribs were crispy and had a nice salty flavour, but the other noodles and rice lacked a few components in flavours and tasted a bit too much MSG. However, considering the price, not complaining too much. In the pineapple and chicken, there was generous meat but only two small chunks of pineapple. Would recommend if you are craving chinese and going for a cheap, satisfying meal.
We came here for dinner an ordered lobster noodles, tofu with Enoki mushroom, beef black bean and roasted pork, every dish was great. The lobster noodles is seasoned well. Roasted pork is succulent and cooked to perfection (I have found some roasted pork can be too fatty or dry). The other two dishes were equally good, well seasoned. The customer service is excellent, the waiter helped to serve the lobster noodles, clean up our table when we messed it up and fill up our tea. Highly recommend this restaurant for good Canton food.
Great, classic Chinese food. Cannot complain!
This restaurant has been opening for a long time. It’s my first time visiting as my friend recommended it. I love food that quite yummy. We had only 2 people so we ordered 3 dishes. Roast duck was super tasty with crispy duck skin. I definitely will come back to try other dishes.
