4.1 out of 5 for us. We ordered on Uber Eats. The food was good, sometimes very good, and the portions were generous. Temperature was an issue with a couple of dishes, but that’s always a bit of a risk with Uber Eats. But, the flavors were excellent and the delivery was polite and efficient. We liked it and would happily order again.
Overall place was good with a complete different taste in all their items on the menu varying from other Mexican restaurants and they even had many options to choose from ..! I would recommend this place who are looking for a evening fun with friends ..! The staff was so polite and highly supportive
Taco Tuesdays, the best thing to happen on a Tuesday 😍 Hello José has a small menu but they cover the essentials and 5$ decent sized tacos is always a win. I went for a few delicious tacos, a cheese fix with jalapeno cheese fries and the best thing of all was the mushroom and garlic toastada. They also have some light comedy on a Tuesday for a bit of extra fun.
We ate out the back which looked like the tables and seats were all thrown together within an hour. It had backyard vibes (with a few flies hovering) and music bumping. Despite having a raw feel to it the dishes we had that night were clean and well presented.
We were given some complimentary buttery popcorn while we perused through the menu which has obviously seen some wear. It's one of those menus where you want to try everything because it all sounds so enticing. We started off with some horchata which did taste a bit like medicine but I soon acquired a taste for it with hints of vanilla and cinnamon.
The ceviche tostaditas tasted super fresh from the brightness of lime, both in the curing as well as a garnish. The crisp base gave it a nice crunchy texture, the guacamole some creaminess.
I feel like corn is a neccessary starter for Mexican cuisine in Melbourne, charred with melted parmesan, spiced cream and a generous dusting of sumac. That combo with lime gave it plenty of spice, sourness and acidity.
Our tacos were also great which came with a wedge of lime (more lime needed) and a duo of salsas, each with their own characteristics. They were all very generous and held up well. The pork taco could have been more tender but the crackling was on point. Fish taco was beautifully fried and flesh was flakey and delicate. Chorizo taco was skinless and had some heat to it, it was difficult not to spill the ingredients.
Would not hesitate in returning and it does get pretty busy late at night as it's a popular spot not only for food but for drinking.
Tacos are amazing. I recommend the beef and fried chicken. Wings are delicious too. The corn is just so moorish. Also you have to have a margarita ... or more like many a margarita. Vibe and atmosphere is chill and good music playing.
Mulled wine, $9 perfect for winter.
Flan, $9, great dessert, especially paired with the mulled wine.
Free popcorn to snack on.
Very grungy beer garden which feels very Melbourne.
Went here for Tuesday tacos and I must say it was worth it! I had heard about this place a lot and I finally got to visit. I tried the crispy chicken taco, beef taco, pork taco and chorizo taco. All of them were great and with the right amount of spices. I must say I particularly loved the crispy chicken taco! My wife had a ceviche tostadita which had the right amount of acidity mixed with the crunch provided by the tostadita. I definitely recommend this place for dinner together with some drinks!
The tacos here are amazing! Oh my goodness my partner and I were so stoked with what we had. Couldn’t begin to pick a favourite between the pulled beef, fried chicken or the chorizo taco’s. The staff were friendly and the free cup of the popcorn was a great addition. At $6 a taco it’s pretty decent and I know I’d be more than willing to pay that again, even if more than three tacos a person becomes a bit more expensive. The freshly made tortilla is delicious and you can really tell the difference!
Great fish taco’s, nice fresh food and quick and good service. Seats are a bit old but it fits the place! I will certainly be back for more!
I thought the tacos here were pretty damn good. 6 bucks a taco doesn't seem too bad, but if you turn up with an appetite they're so tasty you could easily smash 5 so it can get quite expensive, although ordering 3 is probably a normal sized meal. Staff were pretty friendly too.
Would like to put out there we only had the lunch menu so didn’t get to try much however their nachos and chicken wings were excellent ! Service was friendly and the venue had a very casual feel to it with a beer garden out the back. Would go back on a nice warm summer night for dinner 🙂
Wandered in and was surprised by the size of the joint. The outside space was eclectic and had a great, rustic vibe.
Choose a beef and grilled chicken taco plus the mushroom dish - all were great! Would recommend if you are looking for a laid back, tasty Mexican joint that's full of authentic flavours.
Will be back soon!
we could the food is okey it's tasty but not 100% Mexican but it's okey. Service is average but not professional however is the style of the place (small and casual) try the churros they are a must. Should totally check it out.
Pretty solid place. Had some tacos and a bean and quinoa salad with chicken. The tacos are pretty decent, fresh tortillas and super sharp ingredients. If anything I would say that $6 tacos need to be spot on but luckily they don't disappoint. The salad was a good choice too, fresh healthy mix of ingredients to complete the meal.
Glad we tried this place after our terrible experience at La Tortilleria on the same night. Orders Tostada and corn to go and food was amazing and service was great and friendly. Will definitely be back
Tucked away opposite Victoria market this Mexican place is like a good bar that makes nice food. It's cozy and had good out door areas. The food was good but not amazing. I enjoyed it but in no rush to head back. I would go there for drinks though. The margaritas were epic
Such a cool hidden gem in the city. Amazing food and atmosphere and the ceviche is everythinggggg. Love the laid back vibe and their in-house sauces are delish!
This place is amazeballs! I first went there with a friend who lives in the area. It was the middle of winter and freezing cold and i just so happened to have my dog as we'd been out for a walk that day. We were greated and then shown the outdoor area out the back. Did I mention they are doggo friendly?
They had blankets for us and heaters, and we were offered pop corn on arrival. Yummo! They even had a great selection of hot sauce for pur popcorn and later our meals which is always a win, especially if you forget your own.
Apart from being doggo friendly the food is great! I mean really great and one of the main reasons we've been going back so often. Best tacos I've ever had, I've taken a particular liking to the chorizo taco 😍😍
All that said if you want great food, beer and beverages definitely a must to visit
This my seriously favorite place in Melbourne! The food is to die for! The selection of tacos are generously filled and oh so tasty! They have tasty popcorn to snack on at arrival and house salsas to complement your tacos too! And a good selection of hot sauces! Everyone is so friendly- from the owner-operators to ALL the staff who cheerfully provide excellent service and amazing food.
I live nearby and I feel very comfortable going there alone and am often taking friends with me- be it summer or winter. I suggest this place to my Airbnb guests who always tell me of their wonderful experiences there. In summer the beer garden is a haven from the heat and the hustle bussle of city life. In winter they have heaters and blankies to keep you warm if you want to sit outdoors. And of course there is indoor seating too!
Have I mentioned how good the food is!? I'm not usually a wings girl but I've been converted! So good! They have a good selection of beers, tequilas and cocktails. Hello Jose is a also great place to hold an event too- very accommodating!
Can't fault this place at all. Just selfishly wish they were open every single day!
Wow. There is a half point off for the longish wait (and no popcorn offered!) on a busy night, but that's the worst I can come up with. Taste sensations at every turn, beginning with the best frozen margaritas in Melbourne. What fun - great playlist and laidback approach with simply awesome Mexican. Hola heaven!
What an absolute experience. From the moment I walked in a was greeted with a warm smile and a cold beer. The food was second to none, cracking Mexican flavours and a groovy vibe. Friendly service and sexy staff. Can't wait to go back!
Who doesn’t love a dose of Mexican food and tequila? Well, maybe tequila isn’t for everyone but you probably secretly enjoy it or haven’t realised it yet. Hello José brings classic Mexican street food with market-fresh ingredients and quality tequila to the North Melbourne area in the form a quaint hole-in-the-wall-style taqueria bar.
Best fish tacos going round! I'm quite a fussy eater and the sound of a fish taco didn't really tickle my fancy, but I tried my hubby's one first and then thought they were the best thing on the menu! On arrival you receive a fresh cup of popcorn which is pretty awesome and delicious! $5 a taco seems pretty reasonable too. I'm not much of a booze hound and just stick to the softies so can't really comment about the alcoholic drinks!
Best Mexican food I've had in ages. Super tasty, bursting with flavour and totally moreish. The chorizo taco was a standout, as was the cerviche tostadita. In fact everything we ordered was delicious. It's the kind of food that makes you go "wow" each time you take a bite. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive, and the place has a nice cosy vibe, with great music. Very reasonably priced. Oh, and the sangria was great too. Can't wait to go back!
Loved it!
Such a chilled place. I loved the variety of international drinks on the menu. The food was pretty good too.
The chicken taco was by far the favourite. The chorizo taco wasn't what we expected, but was delicious. The pops of cracking in the prop taco was fabulous. All round good food.
The staff were very friendly too. A great little Taco place!

Amazing place fantastic food and friendly staff! The beef tacos must to try, the best I ever had. Complementaries to the chef. I really recommended.
Absolutely delicious food, pretty good service & cosy, fun atmosphere! 🌮 Perfect for a Friday night after work or if you want a casual, easy & scrumptious dinner! Very reasonably priced too for how good the food was. Would give a 5/5, but once the place filled up the service was a touch slow - but that's also to be expected when there's not many staff. We loved our night out here, highly recommended!!! 👍🏻
So so so good. The pork and fish tacos are amazing, and the corn starter was incredible. I would definitely recommend to others, and I will definitely be back! Pet friendly is a bonus too!
Fantastic service, inexpensive, free popcorn, tasty food. They had $10 margaritas and $5 tacos. The tacos aren't massive but they're really tasty and well worth $5. I'd recommend the pork belly, which has crackling. We will definitely be back again soon!
Simple menu and affordable prices. I found the fish taco to be the favourite and the corn starter was super tasty. Nice atmosphere and good vibes!
The staff is friendly, the foods are good. Especially the pork belly taco, is absolutely spot on, the crumble crackling mix up with the pulled pork belly. Is delicious. The atmosphere was not really cosy.
Love this joint! In a city that now has a lot to offer Mexican-wise these guys stand apart with an intimate vibe, delicious tacos and awesome service.
I tried the ceviche tostadita, beef, pork and fish tacos - they were all great except I didn't think the fish one was amazing but pretty similar to ones I had in Mexico so might just be my personal preference.
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, there was some miscommunication when ordering drinks and they ended up giving me the drink for free which was lovely. Highly recommend!
This is a little gem, service was great,
Food was spot on 3 tacos and I'm stuffed
I feel like this is one of those places you stumble across and it's going to be a go to place soon.
Staff are great, tunes are great, food is great.
Taco rating:
1- fish
2- pork
=2- chicken
3- beef
i previously worked just down the road from this lovely little place and what they do is truly unique... this isn't the place to go for your takeaway or quick fix as they do not promote cheap meals / soul-less dining. the food / drink does arrive promptly always as the co-owners work full-time being cheerful, energetic and sensitive to the patrons needsthe range of food on offer has extended recently to tamales which are pretty damn cool all wrapped up like a baby in a corn huskover and above this is the place to have a solid time with your crew - get a bit rowdy, sing-a-long to some 90s hits, and relish in the fact that you chose somewhere fun (without pretension) to spend the night getting a little bit lost in a nice way
Great little place opposite the Vic market, small and quaint, perfect for an after work meal. Taco's are delish, pork belly was the best, but the fish was close second. Chorizo tostida's were tasty! Waitress was friendly and helpful!
Went to Hello Jose for first time. It has great tacos, like the pork the best. Also great friendly staff. Will be back for sure. Good location, right next to Vic markets.
Now it's usually very hard for me to give a 5 to any place i go to due to always finding something that pisses me off or could be done a lot better. But in fact found nothing wrong with this place but in fact had one of the best nights out in a while at Helo Jose!!!
This place is a gem and from the outside and looks like a small toco-ria that i am very use to from traveling the US! Apon entry we where welcomed immediately and sat. Service for me is a big factor when going out anywhere and i can say that there service was unbelievable. After the first 2 shots of tequila and 2 tocos we had complete trust in our server and just said keep bring us what ever you think till we are full! And man he brought the house down! especially the Fish Toco and the house made tequila chasers are a massive standout.
If i was to critise anything about Helo Jose it would be there bar and food menu is not big enough cus i just wanted more and MORE!!!!
Great job guys and home to see and expansion soon!
Came to see what the fuss was about and left very happy! Admittedly we didn't drink anything but the food was extremely fresh and tasty, and the service was great! If we drank I am sure we would be saying the drinks were fab too, the food was superb! We will be coming back! Can see this being packed in summer!
Fresh tasty tacos paired with any number of great cocktails and a killer tequila menu (I have tried a few, all winners) make Hello Josè a must visit on your mex quest through Melbourne. The staff are friendly, attentive and know how to put together a banging, nostalgic music playlist.
Well priced, gluten-friendly, tasty and fresh. I'll be back!!
AWESOME PLACE! It's small and authentic. All the tacos were loaded with fillings and at $5 each, that's about as cheap as they get. Authentic margaritas and elote corn too.
Fantastic quirky little place. It's near on impossible to find good Mexican in Melb and this ticks all the boxes. The pork belly taco is a must try! Loved it!
Any bar that encourages punters to eat with their hands while listening to an array of 90's bangers has my blessing. The staff were energetic & attentive - It was clear they loved being there. Perfect spot for a quick knock off or a solid Taco and Tequila session on a weekend. I can recommend the Fish Taco with confidence.
Great little place just across the road from the Queen Vic Market. Great vibe - cosy, intimate and warm. Great food - freshly pressed tortillas with 5 delicious filling options... try them all! Price-wise $5 tacos and $6 beers makes for a really affordable night. Try this place out!
Love this place. The portions are small but oh so tasty. The staff are very friendly, the margaritas are strong and the food is fresh. Can't wait to come back.
Refreshing sangria before a delicious feed of tacos....I had the chicken, beef & pork tacos along with some freshly made salsa and a squeeze of lime, all scrumptious! Completed the meal with some crunchy churros with chocolate sauce, so nice I admit to drinking from the bowl haha! There was a very authentic vibe in this cosy restaurant, with cool Mexican touches in the furnishings and crockery too! I'll be back to look for José!
Highly recommended!. First time tonight at Hello Jose. Had come highly recommend & did not disappoint. Friendly service and a great atmosphere with some classic tunes.
The food was great value for such high quality tacos & delicious flavours, Margaritas were spot on! I will definitely be back.
Amazing tacos. Highly recommend the beef taco.
Great spot for after work drinks as well. Cheap, cheerful and full of flavour!
Best Mexican in Melbourne!
Muchas gracias. Mexican taco's that taste better than the ones in Mexico!
Lovely food, drinks and atmosphere. No reasons not to go here :)
@ bukko boorerango, you my friend are an absolute twot. The tacos are outstanding and at $5 they're a bargain.
Top job guys
Tasty little taco shop. Great spot on a Friday night with drinks.Fresh daily made tortillas ( gluten free )we enjoyed sharing the 5 different fillings from the menu. The fish and pork tacos were winners on our table and a special note to the house sauces too.
Authentic "artisanal" tacos, but small and expensive. Mexican food in Melbourne is a dreary affair. I've been to a bunch of Tex-Mex places around town (but NEVER to Taco Bill!) and out of all of them, only Guzman y Gomez is good enough that I'd consider going back. And GyG would just be considered a middle-of-the-road shopping mall franchise in the U.S. So when I noticed Hello Jose had opened and saw from its website what they were trying to do, I was encouraged to give 'em a go. My mouth is glad I did. My wallet, not so much.
These aren't your crunchy-U-Shaped-corn-shell-from-Old-El-Paso, mince-with-chili-seasoning tacos. Hello Jose makes theirs more in the style of what's popular on Mexican food trucks in Los Angeles. The soft corn tortillas lay flat and the toppings are piled on them. Then you pinch the edges together and bring it to your mouth, trying not to spill too much on the way. I had one with pork -- the cracklings gave it a nice crunchy mouth vibe -- and another with shredded beef. That was my fave because it came with jalapeño slices on it. Hello Jose has an assortment of salsas, including a couple that they make in-house, if you want to add your own vibe to it. The cabbage slaw that was on my tacos was an excellent alternative to the stereotypical shredded lettuce/tomato/onion on Bill-style tacos.
My main whinge is the price. Where I used to live in Vancouver, Canada there was a hella-popular local chain named La Taqueria that did the same style of "pinche" tacos, with quality crafted toppings. Only, they sold theirs at 4 for $10 and each came on top of two tortillas because those things tended to fall apart. Good taste at both places, but the Canucks were a better value for money. My other gripe about Hello Jose is the horchata, which set me back $5 for a coffee-mug sized serve. Too bad that 2/3 of the cup was full of ice cubes and it was the thinnest, least-flavourful horchata I ever had. Even rum would not have redeemed it. Don't waste your money on it -- have a beer instead.
The best tacos in Melbourne. The spicy margaritas also deserve a very special mention. This will definitely be our new favourite hang out.
Absolutely fantastic. Great food- amazingly delicious corn, tacos and churros and absolutely delicious drinks and service! Couldn't recommend highly enough- get there!
Everything was tasty, fresh & spot on! You can't go past the Pork Belly Taco & the freshly made Sangria... Both amazing & a must try!!
Market Fresh Mexican. A Mexican bar that doesn't over endulge you in extra cheesy beany dishes. Rather you will get amazingly fresh quality and rich flavored tacos. Lovee the Pork belly taco with crackling. Beef taco lives up to its reputation. Be sure to add there special homemade "green or red" sauces to your plate for that kick to the palate. Atmosphere is extremely fun and it's hard to not to be infected by these young lads enthusiasm for food and good times!
High five Jose!. Lots of fun, great food, great people. Loved it ❤️
Them tacos. Haven't had tacos this good since being in Mexico...
Friendly vibe also. Likely to become a staple of my diet.
Definitely my favorite tacos in the CBD area. Nice outdoor seating area. Very limited indoor seating. Highly recommend a booking. I usually get the build your own taco option as it seems like a better deal. There is always something protein left over after, so they give a good portion also.
Nice hang out and really yummy food. We were walk ins as we didn’t have a booking, but the staff were friendly and attentive. We order through their QR code app and the food and drinks came out in a good amount of time. Would definitely go again
Really tasty Mexican. The DIY take away taco feast was really fresh with very generous portion sizes - I couldn’t finish it all. I had the vegan option and it was full of flavour… The totopos stole the show though, basically loaded nachos - the perfect ratio of chips / salsa / sauce.
I absolutely adore visiting this chilled little joint.
Firstly, it has the most wonderful outdoors area with the warmest vibe - on a cold winter day, the staff will always be happy to switch on a gas heater to make sure you're nice and cosy.
One of my favourite things is walking in the front door and immediately smelling the incredible aromas of a freshly pressed, authentic corn tortillas.
The tacos, all of them, are to die for. And to all the negative comments complaining about the size/shape/form of the tacos (maybe look within yourself if you don't know how authentic tacos are supposed to be sized and served).
The ceviche tostaditas are a must have, and, I know a place is good when I also absolutely adore their vegetarian/vegan options too as an avid meat eater.
Delicious vegan tacos! Loved the atmosphere, customer service, array of hot sauces, and casual outdoor set up. Will definitely be back!
