Great spot for good wine and great snacks, nice fit out with cozy little alcoves. Anchovies were lovely, polenta chips really hit the spot. Worth a linger!
Cute little wine bar in South Melbourne (a diamond in the rough amidst a plethora of dirty pubs). Always a solid option for those seeking something left of centre in their beverage selection.
Intimate little wine bar next to St. Ali. Great selection of wines. Notably enjoyed the charcuterie board and polenta chips. Perfect place to take friends or that someone special.
This place was a real find. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a relaxed atmosphere. We only had wine and a tapinade so can't review the menu. The big transparent skylight was a bonus.

Friendly and professional staff, relaxed atmosphere, and it wasn't too loud - so we felt very comfortable having a few drinks and didn't feel rushed at all.
I recommend getting a bottle of wine as the service is excellent and the staff always kept our wine and water glasses topped up.
Smalls bar is brought to us by the guys who own and run St Ali next door, and they brought with them the same effortless, 'how come it feels so cool here' vibe. We had drinks with some of the work crew one evening. It's super cozy as the name might suggest. Add a few rounds of drinks from a menu broad enough to suit everyone, but not too big to annoy, a couple of bowls of nibbles and there was plenty of big love in the house.

I really want to like Smalls bar. The decor is chic, the service is friendly, but the food, well, the food is nothing out of this world :(
We had a friend from overseas coming to town and we wanted to take him to somewhere small and cozy. Smalls fits the bill. But perhaps it was my fault though. We were expecting to get a dinner and I am pregnant so wanted something hearty. So bringing people to a wine bar with a huge focus on charcuterie might not be the best idea? The problem is in all the reviews I can see scotched eggs and quail etc and I thought, yes! There is something hot I can eat there! But when we got there all we can have is cold (but cooked) dishes.
We started off with pickled eggs, which none of us where a huge fan of, although it certainly makes you hungry because of the vinegary flavour.
Next was the salmon dip which was delicious. They served it with beautifully warmed bread and roe on the side for me.
We didn't have much choice on what else to order, as the tempura oysters (or oysters in general) were sold out. So we ordered the pork rillette and duck & pistachio terrine. The duck was quite nice with the pistachios but it was so fatty that even with the plum jam (?), gerkins etc it still didn't cut through the fattiness. The terrine was nothing special.
They managed to forgot our tomato and goats cheese salad which they bought out quite quickly once they realised. It was a blessing in disguise because it was a nice refreshing end to the dinner. The tomato salad was actually the bomb and I could eat a 5 plates of these! Extremely fresh mix of heirloom tomatoes, a deep fried tomato w an amazing chilli kick & mild goats cheese was da bomb.
Sadly the boys are still hungry so we had to go to Wat da Pho after.... Doh!!!!
Excellent food, really tasty selections like chickpea starter. We tried the quail, garfish, blood pudding and all were great.
Incredible champagne and wine, outstanding service and advice from the staff. I will be back!

By the time we drifted out the night was moody, dark and the wedding next door had moved on to blasting ground thumping beats. Smalls does this to you. You linger long, plied with great service, interesting, very eatable plates of food and exceptional wine. Two hours turns into six.
Fabulous service, wine and interior. Will be back very soon. Great for south Melbourne and hope more like this open in the area.
4 of us sipping wine and having dinner there, we loved it and we'll definitely come back. Staff was friendly, helpful and polite. Decor is superb! A hidden gem.
Had a really yummy dinner here. Cosy room, great ambience, lovely service (efficient but not intrusive), and really tasty food. The black pudding parfait was ridiculously delicious. Can't wait to go back!
Smalls Bar, small in name, small in nature, you can seat 24 people in South Melbourne’s new Smalls Bar. Situated next to St Ali, I can imagine when Smalls takes off it is going to be just as hard to get in!. The fit out is both clever and quite lovely, each area has been maximised to fit and there is obviously a lot of thought into every element down to the water glasses and the tiny tapas plates or Small plates maybe?! The menu is a reasonably priced list of nibbles with some of the expected and a few little surprises too. Oysters, quail, mussels charcuterie and a chicken parma that I imagine is anything but ordinary! Black pudding parfait sounds wonderful and who could resist a scotch egg with brown sauce.
Such an awesome little bar and a very welcome addition to South Melbourne. The waiters were knowledgable and friendly. The wine menu is extensive and so much effort goes into the quirky food dishes. Highly recommend
Stumbled across this place after buying truffle. They have truffle croque Monsieur on their menu which was a delight. Every dish was excellent. Ambient was great. Service was impeccable and professional. Will definitely be back for more and try their wine menu. Thanks for the great Sunday afternoon Smalls!
