Review No. 3 Station Pier - Melbourne

Bihter Altuntas
The place is at a great location. We had a pleasant conversation in there without any interruptions such as loud music, echo of ppl talking, etc. Waiters were attentive and very helpful for the selection of food. I had cauliflower salad with chickpeas. One bad view was seeing the skins of chickpeas scattered around my plates. After they were boiled, they should have been removed. Pizzas were liked by many. Portions were kept at minimal. If you are dieting, it’s good but expect to pay a bit more than what you get. I guess it is worth it for the view. I am not complaining about it.

We had dinner on Sunday. We enjoyed the setting, the food and service. We went a bit late and there was a rush to finish ordering but that was expected. The lamb ribs were delicious. One of the best I have ever had. The soft shell crabs were nice too.

The best coffee in Port Melbourne. Good breakfast and fantastic service with beautiful sea view. This restaurant became one of my favourite place and I will definitely come back tomorrow and the next day. Thanks Mr. Hobsons

Central spot near Tasman Ferry (till Sept 2022). Great food & drinks. Coffee and snacks as well. Try a double shot for a full-flavoured hit!

Came in for lunch and the food was uninspired to say the least. Service was average and they brought out entree (share plate) and main at the same time for some strange reason. This place doesn’t deserve one star but is firmly at a 2 star level. I should have paid more attention to my predicted rating from Google.

Big dining area, cozy and clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Food are good and reasonable.

Lovely place with water views Lots of car parking but it is metered. Food was delicious Had a ragu pizza , partner had a ragu need burger and sister Calamari. Coffee was good Has alcohol if preferred. Got 25% of food due to new gourmet chef starting there. Thinks this apply all of August. Nice to walk around and see the Spirit of Tasmania

Ordered seafood linguine, bruschetta and half dozen natural oysters. Took about 30 minutes to get our oysters and then the bruschetta came out with the pasta about 5-10mins after. Oysters were very creamy if that's what you like, not to my taste. Bruschetta was very plain, basically just diced tomato with hardly anything else. Pasta on the upside was quite good. Overall though, not very impressed.

Great location. Great food. What more do you want? The decor, furniture could be updated a little. But otherwise, its fantastic! Will return.

Looking on the menu, I found some of your prices are actually overpriced compared to elsewhere. You may say that it's because of location.. but being in the CBD streets or in the suburbs are also top locations with transport nearby etc.. So the location thing is all relative. And other restaurants have better, more direct views of other landmarks anyway. Your beer battered chips DIDN'T appear to be beer battered at all. I've tasted beer and know what beer on chips is supposed to taste like. These chips were just plain taste of potato with nothing beer on them! I felt ripped off at this stage. Another negative was that the waitress placed a filthy glass full of whiteish-coloured dripped dishwater stains on my table and then poured water in it. You really think I'm gonna drink from such a filthy glass? Suggestion: PLEASE clean your glasses and check them twice as if you're serving Royalty.. as I'm 100% sure that YOUR own staff would never drink water from such a filthy glass. The old saying, "treat others as you would like to be treated yourself' rings true in the hospitality trade. This ensures repeat customers. Finally, I find it extremely rude that no matter how busy or empty your restaurant is, your waitresses made an abrupt attempt to snatch my plate, coffee etc from under my nose. Doesn't matter if I've finished my meal or nearly done so or still in the process of doing so, I want you take my plate, cups etc away AFTER I've left the table. It's called MANNERS...thank you!

Poor service, below average food... a waste of time and money.<br/>Tried the place for breakfast and dinner. Both disappointing.<br/><br/>

Mr Hobson used to be good, but has gone downhill since our last visit a year or so ago.<br/><br/>We came for lunch on a Saturday. First thing I noticed was the cafe and restaurant were extremely under-staffed for this time of day.<br/>We decided to sit in the restaurant section.<br/><br/>No one was around to offer us a table, I had to search around for menus. We had to approach the bar to ask a waiter to come over and take our order.<br/><br/>We didn’t see a waiter again until our food came out. Out of the 3 dishes we ordered, only one was correct. The second was incorrect and the third was forgotten!<br/><br/>All in all food is fine (once all the dishes eventually arrived) but service is a letdown and will stop me returning.<br/><br/>I also need to make mention of the state of the bathrooms, not only were they dirty, but they were in desperate need of maintenance (the toilet flush buttons were missing, mirror broken etc).<br/><br/><br/>

Dropped in for a quick breakfast when picking up some family members from the Port. <br/>There was a great selection of breakfast favourites with some modern twist like roti with pulled pork covered in a delicious hollandaise sauce. Yum!

Went for lunch with hubby. Extremely disappointed. When seated, no one offered drinks, we had to wait for a waitress to finally come to us. We finally got a waiter's attention, and ordered and food and drinks. We got our drinks, which was fine. But then I got my main meal before our entree, which were oysters. The waiter said that was coming from another kitchen. I finished my meal, and still waited for the oysters for an extra 20 minutes. They finally came, and they were horrible. Apart from tiny, they had dry (not crispy) bacon pieces and with BBQ sauce. Not what I paid for. Then we had to wait for another 20 minutes until my hubby's meal came. Not that good. Pea puree cold, and the rest below average. The only reason I gave them a 2 rather than 1, was because my meal was not too bad (savoury waffles). Extremely disappointing food and service. Will not be back.

Extremely disappointed, 3 out of 3 steaks were over cooked and cold, service was extremely slow, wait staff didn’t seem to interested when we told them about the meals. Only positive was the view.

Came here for a Christmas team lunch, and really enjoyed ourselves. The service was friendly, we found our entrees nice (I had the beef tataki which was lovely) and everyone enjoyed their mains. Would love to return.

I had a lovely evening here on Saturday night. Service was very good and the food was very nice. The fellow who waited on us was excellent. He was a real professional who knew his craft. I will definitely recommend this place to my friends.

Dropped by for an impromptu lunch. The waitress was friendly enough and although she had a can't be bothered means about her - she was still friendly and trying.<br/><br/>Ordered the seafood platter which was an ok price per person but doesn't come with sides. I've been to other place that offer similar set price with at least chips or salad. The oysters were fresh, calamari lightly crumbed and perfectly cooked. Prawns and bugs were slightly over cooked.<br/><br/>Small selection of wines by the glass but good place to relax by the water on a nice day.

Initial impressions are important. We attended for a drink and snack on Tuesday afternoon, and were made to feel that we were an inconvenience to the female waitress who met us. There was no pleasant greeting or friendly smile. When we asked to change our table, I was met with a heavy sigh by the same person. The wedges were fine and coffee acceptable, but it was the attitude of this staff member that would make us not want to come back again. MEMO TO WAITING STAFF: Anybody can cook wedges and make coffee. It is the attitude of staff members that make the difference.

Went with a group of 14 and my husband was coming late as he was still at work. We ordered first and when I wanted to order his meal 45 minutes after we ordered ours I was rudely asked why I was ordering another meal. We had already mentioned that one person was coming later and we would start without them. Had to constantly get up to fill out water glasses ourselves too.

We chose this place as a last minute celebration for a big birthday and I can assure you, I will not be back. The rudeness of one of the male wait staff was absolutely horrendous. After asking staff in a phone call whether it was ok to bring a cake, I was not informed of any charges beforehand so we proceeded to bring a cake along. Many places may charge a small amount for birthday cakes and we would be more than happy to not bother bringing cake if staff had informed us of this.<br/>Barely, 5 minutes after arriving, a male wait staff approached me and asked me in the most rude and curt manner, "You know we charge $5 per head for the cake?" I answered, "I'm so sorry. I was not informed of this when we called to inform your staff about bringing a cake." He shrugged his shoulders and gave me an "I couldn't care less" expression. I asked, "Is there any way you might consider waiving the charges?" He once again answered in a rude manner with a shrug, "That's the way it is!" This left a bad taste in my mouth especially when I had close family and friends join me for this celebration. I kept quiet and chose not to inform my guests about the awful exchange.  <br/>Halfway through our time at the restaurant, I was informed by 4 other guests that this exact same waiter was extremely rude and they were all appalled by his demeanour. Imagine my embarrassment and horror when I was informed by a family member when she tried to order a meal for her spouse who was on his way, this male wait staff actually asked her, "What for?" What on earth does he think we want to order another meal for? For fun? For the hell of it? Granted the few female staff present were very pleasant and helpful but this horrific male wait staff should not even be in this line of work! The whole afternoon was marred by his rudeness.<br/><br/>We arrived promptly at 1pm and put our orders in maybe about 30 minutes later but were told there was a backing up of orders and there would be a delay of 15 minutes. This is despite the restaurant being less than half full. The 15 minutes turned out to be a lot longer as the main meals only were served maybe 45 minutes to an hour after entrees arrived. I was glad I took the initiative to order entrees or my guests would have been starving. By the time the main meals arrived, most of my guests were no longer hungry and appetites had dwindled with such a long wait.<br/><br/>It is such a pity to leave such a terrible review as the location is lovely, the food isn't too bad and the other staff were quite nice. However, I will not be back and I do not recommend anyone else bothers either if you have to deal with such rudeness and terrible service even if it is from only one staff member. It's not worth it.

I edited my review because I dropped by the second time around. I ordered the same meal and this time, it was well cooked and presented. Juicy beef burger and generous amount of cheesy fries. Service was quick and coffee was great. Will definitely come back again.

Good location and drinks. Food is very average and overpriced. We had the chicken sliders and wedges. Chicken sliders had maybe 1/6 of chicken, the rest was batter. Sliders had potential as flavour was good, but not worth the $18 with no chicken. Wedges were nice (although it’s hard to get them wrong) and very small serving size for $9. Wouldn’t return to eat.

Average meal with luxury price tag. Absolutely below average customer service with top notch attitude. There was no greeting or smiles. Spoken to like a child or as if you have dementia. Absolutely not coming back. With that price tag, we all deserve somewhere better! Good luck mr.hobson!

Mr Hobson Cafe and Bar is horrible.<br/>Service was below par food was over priced ($16 for banana bread).<br/>Waited at counter to pay for one of the worst meals ever for almost 10 minutes without even acknowledgement of my presence.<br/>When we advised the butter had been tainted with garlic and the vegemite was dry and not spreadable we were given blank looks, no apology or offering of an alternative.<br/><br/>This is my first post prompted by a tourist trap cafe providing a terrible introduction of Melbourne's amazing Cafe scene avoid at all cost.<br/><br/>If you want to pay a lot for nothing by all means go ahead - I recommend the Garlic tainted butter with jam on toast :(

It was a hot summer's night and having dinner by the seaside was perfect. We ordered:<br/>1) Seafood Fettuccini - this was a really good dish! All the seafood was very fresh. The mussels and squid were tender (usually they are chewy). The sauce was tangy and spicy. It was a nice combination of flavour. <br/><br/>2) Crispy skinned barramundi and prawn - this dish looked very inviting. The barramundi was cooked perfectly.  The butter sauce made it a bit heavy though. I think having a thai or a tomato based sauce would have been better. <br/><br/>3) Crusted Lamb cutlets - I always worry when restaurants overcook the lamb, or worse, burn it, but in our case, the cutlets were cooked perfectly (still a little red in the middle which is how we liked it). The polenta chips were big and chunky and looked really good on the plate. <br/><br/>4) Baked lemon cheesecake - This was such a pretty, instaworthy dish. I loved that scoop of lemon sorbet on top of the cheesecake to lighten up the dish. The mango mascapone didn't really have much flavour but aside from that, everything else was perfect.

This place has a great view to the ocean, it's situated in a very quiet area and food is also good.<br/><br/>We had a pan fried fish with salad and chips, a mushroom bruschetta, a crown grey tea, an orange juice and a small brownie with cream. The fish was soft and flavored and fries were crispy and nice. Bruschetta was very good as well and tea was also nice.<br/><br/>We enjoy this place and we recommend if you are on the surroundings looking for a place to relax and socialize as you grab some bites.

Poor coffee, the muffin that was sold as fresh was microwaved beyond consumption. Soft drink is that diabolical pub mix rubbish. Toilets were like an American Frat house had partied there. Staff were totally unhelpful. Avoid as there are so many better places to visit.

Service is pretty bad , not recommend ................ staff is not listening and the only stand out is the view. Food is very average at the price

I had booked a window table, however my seat wasn't arranged. Really disappointed with the service especially the man served us.Decor and the view were good. but the food was just average.Anyway it is a shame that they have wasted their wonderful view with all the rest couldn't match the level.

Great location at the pier of Port Melbourne, this place really offer a good view and comfy place to sit and enjoy breakfast.<br/>Had a Mr. Hobson egg benedict, breakfast burger, and latte & orange juice for the drinks.<br/>First of all, the latte was top notch! Hot, smooth and creamy. I loved it.<br/>Egg benedict was gorgeous. Succulent slow cooked pork, with the potato croquette and hollandaise sauce, all was just a perfect combination on my plate. A bit over cooked eggs, but that a tiny thing I can ignore.<br/>Breakfast burger was very good too, with bacon cooked to perfection, and the hash brown chips was a clever addition to it.<br/>Staffs was friendly and very attentive.<br/>

Rating was on food! The food was not only beautifully presented but was delectable and mouth watering! The service was lovely however a bit slow on drinks. Husband received his beer mine took a bit longer cancelled second drink as had finished food and still hadn’t received it. Also entree order was missed. Waitress was apologetic and lovely. Note to owner the decor is old and dated. The carpets were well worn and faded. Cushioning and decor felt like it didnt belong. The chairs in the inside dining wereovely but didnt match the tables and out door decor wS very old. The inside heating lamps were dingy and the roof actually had brown marks on it. It did Have beautiful wooden beams which were hidden and anice bar. If the decor was updated the place would have a 10/10. The food as I said was delicious!!!!!! I also should not the entree squid ink tortellini was to die for! If decor is updated this place has amazing views amazing menu and the staff were lovely!
Eat Play Live Melbourne
Mr Hobson is located in the most amazing spot on the water in Port Melbourne.  They have a lovely outdoor space where you can enjoy coffee and brekkie; a cafe area for brunches; and a causal dining restaurant with gorgeous harbour views, an open kitchen and a cocktail bar - open all evening!  They really have all their bases covered<br/><br/>On our recent visit we were treated to this yummy spread, consisting of:<br/>☆ Baked eggs smokey chirizo sausages,  paprika potatoes, parmesan & goat's cheese,  avo salad<br/>☆ Pumpkin, feta and corn frittas, smoked salmon roasted tomatoes,  poached eggs, chia & pumpkin seeds with hollandaise<br/>☆ Triple stack blueberry pancakes, blueberry compote, vanilla marscarpone & maple<br/><br/>Baked eggs:<br/>Mr Hobson put their own spin on these baked eggs and they are not what you would usually expect.  Rather than being served in a pan, the eggs were baked with the other ingredients in to more of a fritatta arrangement. The chirizo and paprika potatoes brought soft spice flavors and the cheeses gave a nice richness to the dish.  There was a generous serving of smashed avo and greens to really round out the meal.  We definitely recommend this dish to baked egg lovers who prefer their spices on the milder side.<br/><br/>Pumpkin frittas with smoked salmon:<br/>I'm so excited about these frittas as they are quite possibly the BEST frittas I've ever had! They come standard with 2 poached eggs which we love.  These were perfectly cooked and had so much yolk! There was a generous amount of beautiful smoked salmon and two massive pieces of grilled tomato so you could have some in every bite.  The frittas themselves were AMAZING! Perfectly cooked so they were warm and soft on the inside and they were just packed full of flavour. The pumpkin was sweet and delicious and the feta brought a luxurious richness. I ordered the hollandaise on the side for this meal.  I'm really glad I did because there was so much flavour in the dish already, and so much gooey yolk, that i only needed a tiny bit of sauce for each forkfull just to compliment the frittas. If you love your frittas then this dish comes highly recommended!  10/10 trotters<br/><br/>Tripple Stack Blueberry Pancakes:<br/>3 light and fluffy pancakes with blueberry compote,  vanilla marscarpone and maple syrup.  The pancakes are deliciously sugary on their own but adding the generous serving of rich maple over the top is guaranteed to satisfy the sweetest of sweet tooths.<br/>The berry compote ads a beautiful pop of colour to the plate and the vanilla marscarpone is just devine. In our opinion the pancakes were a great dessert option to an already delicious savoury brunch<br/><br/>The staff were super friendly and helpful and the location cant be faulted. The decor is a little tired and outdated but the location is so beautiful you'll be looking at the view anyway. This venue has so much potential and we can't wait to see what they have in store for the future. <br/><br/>We were invited to dine at Mr Hobson

Good service and a good food! The steak was delicious! Also enjoyed the squid ink prawn tortellini. The paella was just average however. It didn’t taste very fresh and seemed to lack a little bit of seasoning. Overall nice ambiance, good service and a bit of a hit or miss with the food.

Stumbled upon Mr Hobson a number of years ago and enjoyed the first experience really well. This time around I was even more blown away and feel they should have a higher rating. We came using the $79 living social deal which included four courses. First was their soup of the day which was pumpkin. It was delicious and the crunchy bread on the side was perfect with it. We then ordered the pulled pork tacos as the lamb cutlets again great dishes that we shared. We both ordered the braised beef cheeks for main was were both happy with our choice. The meat tore apart beautiful and the mash and sides were delicious together. For dessert we got the chocolate and coconut panna cotta. Just the best way to finish off the night. One glass on wine was also included. The staff were super attentive and had a great attitude! The views of the water are beautiful for a date night. We definitely recommend.
FOOD TRIP
Mr Hobson is a restaurant that serves food throughout the day from breakfast to dinner. Its location is right on the waterfront in Port Melbourne, so the views for dining are amazing. However, the food didn’t match up to the scenery. Wouldn’t come back for brunch. Taro Latte $5.50. Was intrigued by what a taro latte would taste like, but was thoroughly disappointed. Tasted just like frothed up milk with a little bit of sweetness. Overpriced and would not recommend! 0/10
Gastrology
Mr Hobson is a versatile eatery, perfect for private functions and romantic dining with spectacular views  over the water. . The dining space embraces its setting and complements the sea meets land concept. The result is a bright, airy and inviting dining room resplendent with warm hues and full length windows maximising the view.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Sitting by the Station Pier precinct with views of the bay, Mr Hobson is a large venue, available for functions and private dining. Floor-to-ceiling windows take advantage of its waterfront position. Breakfast switches over to the restaurant menu from 12pm, and we come in for lunch.
Split The Bill
We had predrinks here on a Saturday night and loved it. There was a great variety of cocktails, service was fantastic and the views are amazing. We will definitely come back for dinner soon.

Had with the 50% Dimmi, but imo is worth every penny even for full price. The entrees beef carpaccio and pumpkin corn fritters were absolutely gem! The scotch fillet and pasta was delicious too! Worth to try!! Great service too! 0.5 cut off due to pasta quite a small portion.<br/><br/>2nd time around, ordered the salmon croquette, salt and pepper baby octopus, salmon fish cake. All entree and starters are amazingly delicious. Maybe can skip the croquette, not too worth.<br/><br/>3rd time went, had the same stuffs with Lamb<br/>Cutler, was not bad, quite a big portion for an entree size.
Penguineats
There’s no doubt that we were very pleasantly surprised by our visit at Mr. Hobson. The dishes were universally executed to a high standard, and the combination of fresh, wholesome ingredients and unique flavour combinations made for a rather scrumptious meal that definitely tantalised the tastebuds. There’s no doubt this was one of the best dinners we’ve had in a long while.<br/>Perched on the bay of Port Melbourne offering up a beautiful view, this is THE place to be for those looking for a date night venue with a creative, delicious menu and just a tad of wow-factor.
@twogoodtoresist
If you're in search of a restaurant with a stunning waterfront view and ambience then Mr Hobson is for you! Offering a cafe, restaurant and event option Mr Hobson really caters to all. The menu is extensive and the bar is fantastic (we especially loved the espresso martini and the passion fruit mojito! We loved the prawn tortellini- fresh and flavorsome and seemed as if it was just caught! The mushroom bruschetta was gorgeous too and full of flavor as were the pumpkin and corn fritters! For mains we ordered the braised beef cheek and crispy skin salmon- both were super tasty, tender and accompanied with fantastic sides. All portions are extremely generous and filling. For dessert we had the strawberry dish which was creative, innovative and tasty. Overall we loved our experience at Mr Hobson and certainly recommend a visit if in search of a delicious and ambient meal on the water.

I came here today with two other diners to experience what this place has to offer. We ordered a soy latte, Thai lunch meal (bean shoots, meat etc..) and the fish & chips (fish grilled is around $1-something more). When the soy latte came.. I took a few sips. I hadn't had soy for ages, thus forgot what it's supposed to taste like. I doubted there was soy in there, so I went over to the lady at the coffee machine. She was most happy to pour in more soy straight from the pack & even went to the effort to heat it up at the machine. This impressed me very much and reassured me that all was ok. The Thai meal was absolutely delicious and the fish & chips was a unique set up which we dont' see elsewhere.. fish didn't have batter to hide 'sins'.. fish was reasonable sized bare fish (no batter) and chips had paprika powder on them. Excellent! We left from there feeling satisfied and all up just under $40. Prompt service and friendly waitresses. I'd recommend this place again and will return.

I had a seafood platter for dinner next to window with port melbourne view during sunset. The view was beautiful but the food was average. Prawn was not so fresh. Fish was nice but they didnt taste different than any other small cafes around. Love the salad though.

Went here to eat lunch with two friends. As I was half way through eating my food I found a dead fly in it. We alerted the waiter who then joked "so ahh do you want another one? Without a fly in it haha". Terrible customer service, did not even receive an apology. Then because this happened and I had to wait for a new dish, my friends had finished their meals and the workers started to pack up the restaurant and put the blinds out to rush us out. Will never go again.

Amazing views, amazing food. An exceptional evening, dining by the bay watching an amazing sunset.<br/>A very relaxed environment.<br/>Food was very well presented. <br/>

Worst experience during Valentine's Day ever.<br/>First of all, we booked for a specific seating but when we got there they didn't bother asking for our name and just told us to wait and of course we were taken to a different table seating.<br/>Second of all, they only offered a set menu of '3 courses', so we would assume since that's the only thing the restaurant is making for the night, the kitchen must be well prepared already. The food came out extremely slow, between our entree and main there was a 45 minute gap. We thought it was because they forgot about us but we noticed people around were bothered by this too.<br/>When the food came out, the flavours weren't too bad but nothing special that was worth the price. However I understand it's Valentine's Day so for the price, it was reasonable.<br/>Last of all, the service was horrible. This lady seemed very rushed and rude. The waiters would forget our requests. To me it seemed like the restaurant wasn't ready for Valentine's Day set menu, as everyone was confused and everything was slow. Definitely not a good experience overall, very disappointing.

On a warm evening a week ago at around 8:00pm , my friend and I were enticed in because the board outside advertised fish and chips. When we were ready to order, we were advised that the items on the board were cafe items and available only until 5:00pm. No problem; we sat outside and ordered from the restaurant menu (maybe remove the board after 5:00pm? ). My friend selected a calamari salad after assurances from our waiter that there would be no garlic in the dish (severe food allergy). Upon arrival of the dish by a different waiter, my friend asked again for an assurance re the garlic. This waiter said the calamari had been marinated in garlic...... <br/>After a couple of minutes of pointless blame-shifting  ("I wrote no garlic on the docket") we established that the order - taking waiter didn't actually speak with the chef. A half-hearted apology later, which included the offer of a drink each on the house, my friend ordered a seafood pasta. We were assured it would be ready in minutes as the chef would prioritise it. I decided to wait for my friend's dish before starting mine. 20 mins later, her pasta arrived. No offer to replace my cold dish. After we finished our meals, we asked the waiter to bring us the drink list so we could select our complimentary drinks. Away he went...... and we didn't see him again. We tried in vain for 15 minutes to get somebody's attention. The waiters simply didn't come outside to attend to us. So, angry and frustrated at the total lack of respect shown to us, we simply got up and left. <br/>To summarise : inattentive and disengaged staff, no customer service etiquette, no care factor. A real shame; It's a great location. If they're succeeding, it's in spite of themselves.

Terrible experience here. The menu looks good and I was looking forward to eating with the lovely view. The place was very busy- we ordered oysters, followed by an entree and a main each. After quite a while- the waitress came back to say they were all out of oysters. Though disappointed - we asked if there was anything else she could suggest - she suggested salmon tartare- we'd already ordered that. So we (finally) got our wine, and got over the no oyster situation. A few minutes later another waiter came and said - sorry- no salmon! How do you run out of 2 dishes on a Saturday night? The menu isn't that extensive! Very disappointing.

Looking for a casual dinner location with a water view we came across Mr Hobson.<br/>Seated promptly by happy staff is always a great start, with a menu that covers all tastes we ordered a few drinks and took in the views, the location is great with the sun setting over the water on Port Melbourne was hard to concentrate on the menu.<br/>With chilli prawn croquettes and the duck patte ordered as entrees these were delivered promptly and full of flavor, the prawn croquettes needed a little more seasoning but the chilli jam makes up for this, the duck patte is as expected with fresh toasted sourdough.<br/>For mains the order of duck breast and crispy skin salmon arrived right on time not being rushed through your meal is a favorite of ours to sit and enjoy the night is as much a part as the flavors. The salmon was cooked well and moist with crispy skin, while lacking a little salt it was very nice. <br/>The duck was beautiful cooked well and full of flavor, over all Mr Hobson is a nice restaurant with great views the staff are very attentive and helpful. We will come back next time we are Melbourne.<br/><br/><br/><br/>

Edit May 2017: These guys have upped their standards and portion sizes that for sure. I feel as though there's new menu with a few new items which is great to see.<br/><br/>The waitress we had was lovely. It's lovely to see that they've CLEANED THE WINDOWS :) so you have a beautiful unbirdpooped view of the water

Pad Thai was awesome and massive! Had plenty of seafood. Enough for two people. The salmon dish with leak was great too. Highly recommended for food and views.
Richard
Very strong smell of stale oil in the room. The chips were good, the salad was OK. The Pad Thai was not Pad Thai. The place felt unloved and ordinary. Shame beacuse the location is great.

Great food , ordered the tapas , it was presented beautifully and very tasty , service was great . Enjoyable experience.will have to be back to try the rest of the menu.<br/><br/>

Great location. Room had a very strong smell of stale oil, that is not an appetising atmosphere. Chips were good. Salads just OK. Pad Thai was not Pad Thai.Shame, the place could be so much better.

Eight of us dined there last Friday night. Half an hour before ordered drinks arrived. AND 2 hours for main courses. Place was booked out, but only one male waiter and two waitresses for the whole dining room! Steak and bugs dishes covered in inedible jus. Duck dish full of bones. Very ordinary dishes. And shocking service. Never again.

Unfortunately I have to give a poor review and I'm one never to do this. Looked like they were under staffed and no one knew what they were doing. Waited quite a while for 2 glasses of wine and our mail meals. My partner ordered the Salt and pepper calamari and their were literally 5 pieces of calamari along with burnt chips <br/>I hope it was just a bad day and your service and meals improve !

We loved the previous menu at Mr Hobson so were keen to try this revamp. Sadly, it wasn't anywhere near as enjoyable, especially for our friends who cannot eat seafood.  Not much choice for them. The two noodle dishes were quite nice, my trout was ho-hum though the salad with it was good. The serive was, on the whole, inattentive with a couple of requests entirely ignored. Very sad as we won't be back any time soon.
Cherise
This place did not disappoint. Ordered the five dish tapas plate (shown in picture) and it was all delicious! Arancini balls, ribs, chicken skewers, calamari, octopus and onion rings. At first didn't think it would be enough for two of us but we got through it all and were satisfied! <br/><br/>Waiters were friendly and food was delicious but nothing compared to the views. Just incredible! <br/><br/>Always find it a little odd when the restaurant is near empty that they seat people away from the windows when they're available. Regardless, I enjoyed the view from my seat (where the photo was taken). <br/><br/>Overall great experience and would return!

Very fine dining with a lovely view of the water & amazing service. The seafood was succulent & plentiful & they especially found us a bottle of moscato as it's mum's favourite & it was her birthday. Dessert was divine - chocolate or strawberry pana cotta. An exceptionally good meal!

Horrible food. Got the mr Hobson fish & chips, the chips had a really bad smell / seasoning that made them inedible. The fish was mostly batter & the salad had tomatoes which had gone bad, the quality / produce is very poor, will never go back.

Came here on a voucher and pleasantly surprised , five dishes of tapas . Calamari , octopus , chicken skewers , aranchini balls and ribs !! Followed by Affogatto with Frangellico and a Passionfruit Cheesecake!!

Beautiful venue, fabulous service and a wonderful way to spend a Friday night after work. Thank you!<br/>PS the sticky date was amazing :-).

Beautiful venue with stunning views and ambience. It'd be perfect to enjoy lunch here on a nice sunny day. We went in for dinner and although the weather was terrible, there were still many patrons inside enjoying a relaxing weeknight meal. Had the chef's selection of five kinds of tapas and a bottle of house white (MacPherson's Sauvignon Blanc). At first I thought the tapas wouldn't suffice and we might have to order mains but surprisingly we were quite full after finishing everything on the plate. The five kinds of tapas included: two onion rings & three pieces of slow-cooked lamb ribs, warm octopus with rocket salad, calamari with rocket salad, three chicken skewers and three arancini balls. It's just the right amount to share between two people in my opinion, unless you are really ravenous eaters in which case it'd be better ordering one more course of main or dessert. The flavours were all excellent and my favourite was the lamb ribs. The meat peeled right off and was so juicy and tender! The only flaw was that the chicken skewers were a bit dry and overcooked, but other than that everything else was quite delicious. Service was of a high standard but could've been slightly more attentive. Overall would recommend this place.

Absolutely delicious! Food and service were both great, we'll be back! Thoroughly enjoyed the three course meal.....the passionfruit panna cotta is a must.

A great meal on a great deal!  We dined here on a Living Social voucher for 3 course meal with a drink. There was 4 of us in total and everyone enjoyed their meals, the service and the view. I enjoyed the sticky lamb ribs for entrée, baby snapper fillet for main and dessert was chef's choice of pannacotta - I chose mint and it was a great way to end a great night. The food and service was really good and the value for money with this deal was fantastic!

You just can't beat this venue even on a winters day! Loverly. We shared tapas and it was adequate whilst not outstanding. The chicken skewers were dry, the spinach parcels under filled and the chilli jam was sriracha sauce. The prawns were the best offer. Service was patchy.

Late Review <br/>Service is a big let down here. Have been to Mr Hobson so many times as I used to work locally. View and food are great. But you have to try a bit hard to get the attention of wait staff specially if you sit outside.

Had an enjoyable dinner last week. The meals were quite good but just off from being amazing. The service was a bit slow even though the place wasn't too busy. Had to halt down waiters even when drinks had been empty for quite a while and once ordered, took about ten minutes to arrive. All quite minor things though.

Can it get any better?<br/><br/>Location .... one of the best location in Melbourne for a great dinner, seaview and all, just imagine Summertime. On that note I do hope that the Port Phillip City Council is in support of growing these businesses as it was dead empty on a Sunday night; abandoned street parking, could it be the fee that they are charging until midnight?<br/><br/>Wine list ..... fantastic Geoof Merrill Merlot, Balnaves and others.<br/> <br/><br/>Food wise .... YES and NO.<br/>Entree Seared Scallops and Spicy Chilly Prawns got the right stuff but wasn't cooked well/overcooked.<br/><br/>Pork Belly was somewhere there, near crispy skin, but too salty, good composition. Best was my wife's which I get to taste; Crispy Salmon Fillet.<br/><br/>Service was good too.<br/><br/>Thank you, we'll come back in the near future.

We came here with a group of friends for dinner. Great location and view but the food was so-so. It's not on my top of the list of restaurants to re-visit.

Sadly this place was a let down. A friend recommended Mr Hobson and we arrived with high expectations. Perhaps it was simply a case of ordering the wrong thing, we had tapas dishes which were unfortunately all very bland and insipid, but the main meals being delivered to other tables looked quite nice. <br/><br/>In the spirit of fairness we decided to give them another chance and turned up for drinks, only to be turned away at the door by the waiter who claimed they were closing even though the prominent sign on the door said they were open until 11.30pm and we got there just before nine o'clock. I guess they wanted to go home early and far be it from us to screw that up for them.<br/><br/>It could have been the start of a beautiful friendship, but sadly it wasn't meant to be... never mind there are other restaurants who will love us back
Hello World!
It's a water front restaurant. We got a table with a water view. Service was very friendly! Menu involves wide varieties. We ordered a tapa special, the slow cooked pork cube was very delicious! Seared scallops and salt and pepper calamari was good too. The Nasi fried rice was filled with coconut, lemon and chilly flavour. Snapper and prawn dish bought you the taste of the sea. The fillet was a little bit dry. Overall was a good experience.

Woeful service, the food took forever and a day to arrive. Even getting the bill was a process in itself. Food was over priced for the quality and quantity. My inlaws medium cooked porterhouse was still very rare and to find my gnocchi, it needed a microscope to find (if you have a huge plate, then fill it!). Wouldn't go back even if the food was free. Poor, very poor experience.

Terrible service. Slow, all round. Waited an hour for food, one main plate was forgotten, and was handed the bill twice. Would not recommend.

This is a great spot for lunch and as we are hanging around Port Melbourne more often we wish we were drinkers again as out the side there is a gorgeous view to chill and relax to. The steak I had was very well cooked and a great cut of meat, service is a bit patchy here but the ambience inside is very Luxe too. <br/><br/>The coffee and teas were also good and they had little bites for my little one too. No pics as my phone died! :(

The staff seem to hate working here, there is zero ambience, and the food is grossly overpriced. One bottle of beer, one glass of (uninspiring) Sauvignon Blanc and one serving of dips cost us nearly $40. Just to be clear, the dips consisted of two minuscule jars of tzatziki and hummus, and a couple of slices of charred Turkish bread.

Had a beautiful, lazy Sunday Summer late lunch with my fiancé.<br/>Brilliant experience! Thank you Pas for great and friendly service!<br/>We'll be back...

Horrific experience. We were rudely ignored upon entry and received similar treatment throughout our stay. The staff didn't mutter a single word to us, even when we made requests such as propping up the wonky table. We informed the staff when paying our bill that the treatment was not good enough, and they claimed that hospitality staff are rude everywhere - not my typical Melbourne cafe experience.

Took too long to get noticed so after 10 minutes I placed an order at the door. In the meantime new customers turned up and got served straight away. Finally got noticed by 2nd waitress, but order already made! Surrounds could do with a power clean - all looks tired.

Very nice restaurant ambience, nice setting, good view to the ocean, good service. And about the food, quite reasonably good food but there are rooms for improvement to make it even better.

Awful. Just awful. I honestly have nothing good to say about this place, except that the location is lovely. My friend and I had brunch here with my 6 month old in tow. We were seated by a surly waitress who might have been having a bad day and decided to take it out on the patrons. We placed our orders- two coffees and breakfasts each- and were told that they were out of bacon (on a Sunday?!), which didn't bother us too much, but compounded our disdain after the subsequent issues experienced while dining here. Our coffee order was never passed on to the barista, and when we chased it up 30 minutes later, our "lovely" waitress told us that we hadn't been waiting that long but she would pass the order onto the barista ASAP because our docket had been "lost" (apparently this happened to several other customers). When our meals came out, the waitress walked straight into my pram, in which I was bottle feeding my baby. Luckily I wasn't feeding solids with a spoon because the force would have pushed it down his throat. Worse still is that she gave us the dirtiest look like I had shoved the pram in her path. No apologies. While the ingredients were fine, the meals were average at best, and it took about 15 mins to pay for them at the counter. The best part of our dining experience was bonding with the other customers outside over the incredibly crappy service.

Nice location with view to the water. Went there for weekend brunch. Ordered the food and drinks. The food arrived before the coffee and juice. Tasty food, but seems not enough staff around.

The general consensus that I reached from reading other reviews was that the larger the group, the service quality depreciated on a parallel scale. I hoped to be proven wrong, however, my birthday dinner turned into a constant battle with staff. On the outset, the staff very kindly offered people still and sparkling water, who were all deceived into believing that it was free of charge. However, this was not the case. When I had very kindly spoken to the waiters and asked that they inform my guests that they are being charged (especially for still water) before poring them a drink they laughed aloud and said, 'This is a high class restaurant....That's what you get when you dine high-class'. I do not appreciate being mocked, especially on my birthday. What I appreciated even less was that they continued to poor drinks immediately after our conversation before my guests could even respond and also at times without their knowledge. Eventually, on being turned down they became frustrated and treated us discourteously. On every occasion I had to interact with staff, whether it be why half of the guests are yet to order, or where our drinks and sides are after waiting for more then 30 min they were not prompt to act or respond and were ill-mannered. As opposed to spending time with my friends and loved ones, I found myself to be supervising their behaviour to make sure that all guests were being served appropriately and not left out of pocket. They made my night so difficult that I found myself leaving to go outside for some fresh air. While the weather was warm all night, the atmosphere and scenery was lovely, my birthday was completely dampened by their lack of respect. For a 'high class' restaurant they do not know how to engage their customers courteously, particularly considering that most of their revenue for that night came from us. The conversation amongst my friends was dominated by their lack of service and it is not how I imagined to live out the night. I have never said this about a restaurant, but I will never go back. Without a doubt I will tell every person that I know of my experience here to save them any future disappointment. By the same token, my friends have vowed to do the same.

Good place for lunch in Port Melbourne. Pretty standard fare, but well done with fast and efficient service. My only criticism is the music inside was a bit too loud.

Took over one hour to get our food and it was far from busy! In addition to this the listings on the menu are terrible and fail to mention key elements that are on dishes - I ordered Pumpkin and Corn fritters; the menu failed to mention it had sour cream! Uk! Ended up having to scrape it off because there was no was I was going to wait another hour for three teensy tiny little patties. Awkward to eat also. They were the size of the plate and there was no cutting room. The atmosphere was lovely though and the views were gorgeous. The staff were also reasonably friendly, although could have been slightly more professional considering the demographic and pricing. The food was delicious however, and I mean really delicious. The Mojitos (I had the lychee one) are incredible, and have an INCREDIBLY generous amount of alcohol in them.

Mr Hobsons in Port Melbourne checks all the boxes for beautiful food, nice price , great service, awesome ambience and stunning views.<br/><br/>I had lunch there recently with some friends and it was such a hit we have decided to make Mr Hobsons our restaurant of choice for future lunches - it  is just fabulous.

Fantastic restaurant, with beautiful views overlooking the water. While it feels like it's slightly out of the way down on the pier in Port Melbourne, it's well worth the trip. Toasty fire lighting in winter and amazing sunsets in summer, there's always a really nice atmosphere here. With a delicious European style menu, great wine and cocktail list this place is great for a long lazy lunch as well as a romantic dinner. Really can't fault this little gem of a restaurant!

Great location, lovely views of the waterfront.  Have been here a few times and service tends to fluctuate- had an excellent and very attentive waitress once, the other times okay, but not so good.  The menu has several excellent dishes, from hearty mains to little plates perfect for sharing.  The only thing I would suggest is perhaps more variety.  <br/>A few other things-  ordered 2 scoops of gelati from the menu for dessert and it came to the table in a paper cup.  Now paper cups are perfect for a take away icecream, but at the table? Perhaps it was too hard to find a bowl!  Oh well. Also, on the topic of gelati, it was a bit disappointing that they didn't stock all the advertised flavours even in summer.  That said, their sticky date pudding was absolutely on point!

Don't think I'll be back!<br/><br/>Came here Friday evening and not sure what was worse, the food or the service. My partner asked for his steak to be well done but it was medium to rare. My pasta was so overcooked that even an infant was able to eat it. Our meals took forever to come out and the staff were not even apologetic or even attentive. I asked for a moscato and got a house riesling... Seriously? Should've gone to Maccas.

Had a Ladies lunch today, the food was fantastic and great value for money. We all shared the tapas for entree, huge selection to choose from.  For my main I had the braised beef cheek, it was amazing... Compliments to the chef!! Service was great, was served by Sushma, she was very welcoming and attentive all afternoon<br/>.

Sensational. Loved it!! <br/>will be returning for sure.

Very Disappointing. This used to be one of my favourite Melbourne restaurants. The abundant light and refrigerated water are its features. The food is extremely ordinary - soggy pasta, seafood cooked on one side, raw on the other. Maybe it has changed hands. I won't be back there.

Worth a miss!. Had dinner last night at mr Hobson 4/4/15, had to be the worst restaurant meal I and my partner have ever had! We had shared bruschetta , salt and pepper calamari, chicken and lamb skewers and pork belly, everything we had was disgusting, even the drinks were flat!! What a joke, the lamb tasted like in was just about to go off had a disgusting taste to it! The chicken skewers were dry! The peanut dipping sauce for the skewers was like baby food, the pork belly came with a rosti that was like a dried piece of crap! There's no way we are ever going back here to eat, the location and interior fitout of the restaurant is great unfortunately the food and the staff are going to send this's place down the tubes very quickly.

Great view, food and service!!!. Recently visited this resturant for a friend's birthday. The view was gorgeous, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the waitress who was allocated to our table was attentive and informative. Would definitely recommend this resturant.

We knew this place would be terrible subsequent to the response we received when asking whether breakfast was still on - a flat no and a back turn by a person who was possibly the manager (white shirt and blondish hair). So we had a fantastic 3 course lunch at waterfront instead! Gotta love people who don't want your business...
Loubelle16
Non existent service. Hard to describe the service when we didn't receive any.<br/>We had to find our own table as opposed to being escorted to one.<br/>We were then forgotten about and left to our own devices. <br/>After 20 minutes without acknowledgement, menus or even a glass of water, we decided to leave.<br/>Never to return again.

Service is bad. I won't be going back to this place. Nice location but coffee not as good as St Ali, Top Paddock or Proud Mary. Don't be fooled by the location

When you ask for a Cuppa of your choice, make sure you say it "Slow & Clear" Don't expect it in a hurry as well. "Dame Shame"

What a disappointment. Terrible service (if you can even call it service?) After waiting a good 15 minutes before anyone came out and asked if we'd like to order drinks. We were not given menus and had to take them from the table behind us. After waiting for 45 minutes for our food we asked the waitress how long it would be and the response was "I don't know". After an hour wait we received our 4 entrees (without any apology for the delay) and needless to say the food was as unspectacular as the service. The seafood fettucine and salt and pepper squid were especially horrible. The view was lovely so I guess that's something. Definitely won't be going back
JGS
Terrible. Do not go.. Do not go here. This place is a genuinely poor restaurant masquerading as fine dining. The ingredients weren't fresh, the service was slow, it was expensive and the background music was horrible. I would recommend you stay away from here at the best of times but especially on a hot day, there's no air conditioning. A waste of space in a fine location.
