Review Thailand Little Collins - Melbourne

Sony V
At work when I feel like Thai food I keep going back to this place. Love their chilli fried rice. Spice levels are good and you can choose to either ask for more spicy or time it down. Place is not too big and gets crowded after 12:30 pm .

This is by far one of the best Thai food places I have been to. For being a “fast food” joint they actually have pretty good flavours. There is a few things I would say they could improve on, but for what it is I believe they do a great job. Affordable prices ranging from 12.90 to 15.00 drinks 4.00. I give it 5 stars.

Ordered the pork belly with Chinese broccoli. Absolutely delicious. Lots of sauce for the rice, veggies are crisp and the pork belly is divine. Not as many pieces of meat but for ~$13 that's pretty good.
Michael Bouy
Dropped in for lunch and tried the chicken, vegies and rice with a satay sauce. What sauce was there was very thin and watery - I didn't get any satay flavour. Meal portion was on the small side. Really only deserves 2.5 stars.

Easily, a disgusting restaurant! Today I ordered a vegetarian green curry rice for lunch and after having half of it already, I realised that there was a piece of chicken at the bottom. Upon notifying the customer service, they simply replaced the curry with no apology whatsoever. When asked to replace the rice too, I confronted a very stern look from the waitress. A simple sorry etiquette would’ve been enough for me to not write this review. Won’t go there ever again. Btw, food was not great either, tasted bland.

Great place to go for lunch and the food is good value for money. I recommend the Thai fried chicken special, perfect for a quick lunch. I also had a bit of a chuckle at the creative and amusing name xD

Ordered delivery from here and would never do it again. We ordered a green curry, massaman curry and pad se ewe. The curries had maybe 3 pieces of meat in each (all up maybe a cup worth of curry) and very little veggies while the noodles were very dry. At $70 odd for this meal, this was a complete rip off. The flavours were just ok, nothing to offset the stupidly small servings.

I ordered a regular-sized massaman curry to take away. The container was pretty large but about 80% of that was filled with rice. The curry consisted of a few pieces of beef and not enough curry to accompany that huge pile of rice. The flavour was so-so at best. Great place if all you want is a carb boost but wouldn't recommend this place for the food. At $9.90 for the regular size, they aren't cheap compared to other take-away lunch places nearby. I had rather have a food-court lunch box at a similar price point.

I shared a couple of meals here, including their Tom yum rice which was delicious, and their stir fry soft shell crab in yellow curry. The crab dish was nice until I bit into a piece of crab that was frozen in the middle. I was disgusted, shocked and returned my meal and another was cooked for me. This time, I bit into a piece of crab and it had a very off taste, nothing like I’ve tasted before with crab, which I also had to return to the counter. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend any meat dishes as it could have the same issue.
Dave Laurence
Ordered delivery from here recently and the Massaman curry and red chicken curry were ridiculously small servings. The Massaman had 3 small pieces of meat and no veggies while the chicken curry had a few more, but in total both dishes were less than a cup size each. I don't know how they can charge $17 for a tiny curry. I would forgive them if the flavour was amazing, but it was just ok. Don't go here if you are hungry. Or if you do go here, make sure you eat something before you go.
in 5 words: Quick thai fix for lunch!
Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- I ordered a chicken pad thai and I thought it was great. They had sufficient beancurd, chicken, noodles. The noodles were fried well and tasted, well, as how a pad thai would taste! No nasty surprises there. When I heated up the leftovers, the dish was still great and that’s always a big plus to me.
*
Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️- the restaurant did not invest in creating a great ambience because this is a casual eatery targeted at workers in the area.
*
Presentation⭐️⭐️ - they serve their dishes in recyclable plates (as seen in pics). They also serve plastic cutlery even if you eat in the restaurant and I think that affects your entire meal experience. Perhaps they can consider giving us proper plates and cutleries.
*
Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- a regular chicken/vegetarian rice or noodle dish costs $12.9 and a seafood rice/noodle dish would set you back $14.9. I think it’s value for money because the portions were huge. I could also takeaway the leftovers and was not charged for the takeaway box (win!).
*
Service ⭐️⭐️- This is a real self-serve restaurant. While there was no one in the restaurant, the staff did not offer me water. I had to get everything myself (tissues, water). They were friendly during the ordering process though.

Sriracha Thai has recently changed the name to Let’s Bangkok. Still love their Chilli Basil stir fry and Chilli Fried Rice!👍🏻👍🏻 Recommended those two dishes! Thai milk tea is also nice.
Pisang And Goreng
Pisang didn't make this trip, but Goreng was with a colleague for a late night at work - therefore, the cravings for Thai food were high.

We headed up the street to Sriracha Thai and had a quick look at the menu to decide on what was to be consumed.

The boys picked Chinese Broccoli (only comes with Crispy Pork Belly - fortunately!) and Pad See Ew (with Crispy Pork Belly as well).

Overall, it was good. The waiting time left something to be desired, and the food was good.

Will come back again, though hopefully not because of a late night at work.

Got this from Deliveroo! Had a Pad Kee Mao noodles, Massaman curry, curry puff and fried chicken bites.

The fried chicken bites are quite nice and tender, however I don’t feel it’s very Thai style.

The curry puff was nice enough, not amazing.

Massaman curry was good and it’s nicely spicy as requested. My pad Kee Mao noodles wasn’t entirely authentic in ingredients, and the beef was a bit tough, but once again as requested it was really spicy and the flavour was good. Not a bad place for takeaway and I won’t mind going back again if I felt like Thai.
The Dear Luncher
The Dear Luncher ordered the Waterfall beef salad due to The Stone Roses tune, Waterfall. Will there be a Second Coming? Unsure, this dish seemed a tad on the sloppy side. As far as salads of this kind go, this was average. Lacking in that snappy crunch they can sometimes deliver.

There was a request for chicken spring rolls to be added to the salad, upon return to the office a chicken curry puff was found in the package instead. Some kind of crazy misunderstanding there.

Tiny little joint that’s soooo busy during lunch hours. But the staff is super prompt and service is pretty quick.
Have tried their larb gai and chicken satey wok. Both were pretty good and filling.
However, I wasn’t very happy with the paper dishes they use for serving. They get very messy with wet noodles and curries.
DrunkPeach
just quick enough to save some time~small place but always busy~street food style~ Work lunch~what u can expect~was brought by my buddies twice~twice~en~that means ppl work around here like it~tried fried rice~and soup~average taste~
Rohan
Love the Tom Yum fried rice and the Chilli fried rice here! On point. Haven't really tried anything else as these two are my go to dishes. Tip: Get the crispy pork ;)

EDIT: I am a regular here but have been getting very bland takeaways of late. I had to go back a couple of times to get a replacement. Not good. Will be heading to Galleria or Melbourne Central

Ran into the store by accident, spicy and sour just perfect for two-day driving stomach. Also you can only order larger size after five which is fine cause never had enough.
Nischita Nataraj
Had ordered for green curry with vegetables and oh my god!! Could actually feel the creamy texture of green curry done with coconut milk and rice was so well cooked. The seasonal vegetables in creamy coconut curry and rice which was like super Spicy just made my taste buds so happy that☺️

Originally mistook this place for a Thailander franchise, however it seems they are some sort of sister restaurant but with a different name? Anyways, it's a tiny venue with not many seats, 6 work friends came for lunch and squished in. Sadly everything is saved from disposable, takeaway vessels and plastic forks, even if dining in (cheapened the experience a little).

Had the chilli pork belly and Chinese broccoli which is my Thai go-to. Sauce was sweet, spicy and salty, pork belly was crispy and greens were not soggy or over cooked. Decent serve size for the price.

I've only ever had take-away from here but it's sooo good! We keep coming back and everyone I've taken who gets food from here loves it too. The service is quick (15mins from order to ready to be picked up) It's great portion sizes and always tasty. I e had a number of different things from the menu here and never had a bad one.
Umami
Yikes. Had a salad which was drenched in sauce to the point it was a soggy mess. My friend's chicken green curry did not look any better; being served in a paper cup even though we were eating in didn't help.
Mal Owens
I love this place. The food is consistently great and the service is friendly. The best thing is that there such great variety in the menu. Normally when I go somewhere to eat, I'll select the same thing each time. But here, I have at least 5 dishes I cycle through depending on how I feel. Simply delicious!
Xoori
I love their Cashew with prawn. It's always spot on! A great place to have lunch any time. They could add a bit more thought into creating an ambiance and keeping their toilet clean though.

Ordered for pad Thai vegetables with Tofu with less noodles but the order taking staff was totally vague. I was been convinced to take away the dish.

The cook was quite rude then did not replace the dish and order taking staff did not suggest the right sauce for vegetarian.

Had to eat with the fish sauce on that day which was allergic to me.Well the dish is filled with fish oil and there were no vegetables just Tofu.

Highly not recommended.

Finally had the opportunity to try this place under the recommendation of a Thai friend. Came at the right time (2.30pm) after the busy lunch hour. Was told the wait could be up to 15 minutes! I had the tom yum fried rice and a side serve of laksa. Other than having 2 rich combinations at one go which left me too full to finish up my Thai milk tea, the flavours were full on. Laksa was coconuty as how I like it and tom yum had a balance of tasty and a sour punch. Highly recommended for people who don't mind waiting for good food.

Such a joy experience and lovely Thai food in the heart of melbourne city. I really enjoyed my lunch here with my friends Andy and Poh.. we're looking forward to come here again. 100% recommended. Thumbs up.

thumbs up. best food ever. one of melbourne favourite thai food top recommendations. fried rice with chili basil and tom yam soup serve with rice noodle (satisfaction)

Hands down, worst Thai my partner and I have ever had. If you love massaman that is literally 1 little chunk of beef, and 2 tiny pieces of potato in in cream....just cream, this is the place for you. Also had the worst stir-fry noodles that were dry and not just bland but completely devoid of any flavor or sauce/ moisture whatsoever. Gross rip-off. Don't do it.
Jude Diligence
Really, really terrible. Thai beef salad was unbelievably bland. No dressing, no fresh herbs, no chilli. Vermicelli noodles tasted like they'd been lifted straight from the pot - like eating cooked pasta with no sauce. Beef was dry and flavourless. There are so many good places to eat in the CBD and this isn't one of them. Don't waste your money here!
Kevin Francké
Bought a stir fry noodles from their QV outlet and I was nothing short of shocked and disappointed.
The noodles were just white and their was no sign that it had be stir fried. The meat was bland.
Quite amazed and disappointed that such a bad food outlet can exist in the CBD.
A minus rating.
FoodHedonist
I have been here a couple of times for lunch just because it's close to my work place and have decent tasting thai food, but never been impressed. The quantity of stirfry is meagre and really disappointing. I literally had to struggle to save enough stirfry to finish my rice with. The quantity of protein (chicken or meat is way too less) never been to a restaurant that is so miserly with food. The set up is good though, overall an average place.

I made an order on Foodora from this restaurant. Was looking forward to some Thai on a crappy day like today. The order was delivered with 1 item missing. On calling the restaurant direct and being passed onto several different staff members they told me my order wasn't on their system (mind you its in front of me, minus 1 item) and then said we're too busy right now and hung up on me. As for the food...I ordered a Tom Yum Soup and got a bowl of dry noodles with no liquid. Not ordering from here again!

I was looking for a laska and I love Thai so when I walked past this place I thought great.

This is the kind of place for a lazy lunch. I waited for 25-30 minutes for my laska and the restaurant appeared to be only half to 3/4 full. Maybe it was a bad day?

The laska was confusing, it consisted of red and white onion, bean shoots, bean curd, red and green capsicum, raw and cooked zucchini, carrots, bok choy, shallots, a little chicken breast and a really mild, in fact unpleasant laska sauce.

Really disappointing actually, so I will be giving this place a wide berth in future! There are much better restaurants in the CBD in my opinion.
The Swine
Thai cuisine was on the Swine's hit list today. Thailander was the Swine's stop for a quick feed. First time here for the Swine. The Little Collins St outlet is tiny but has a few share tables for customers to eat in. Luckily the Swine squad got to sit and eat. The Swine ordered a regular Beef Mossoman Curry - a fave! Despite appearing like a very small serving it was actually plentiful for the Swine's big guts. Taste was also better than expected - authentic. The menu does have most of the usual culprits when it comes to Thai food - pad thai, rice, red and green curries, to name a few bad boys n girls. There was a bit of a wait for food, which was the main sore point (but it was peak hour). Nothing essential but not terrible either. The Swine would go again.

A fairly good place if you want a good, cheap Thai hit. For the price, it's definitely better than a lot of other Thai places I've been to. The Tom Kha (tom yum with coconut milk) and Pad Khee Mao (thick rick noodles with chilli) are great but for the Pad Thai lovers out there, it doesn't have the greatest pad thai. Definitely one of your quick, not-too-fancy lunch spots during your lunch break.
Joshua.ang
the taste of the food is consistent, sometimes good sometimes not, depend on the mood of the chef perhaps? Today, I ordered Pad See ewe and it taste horrible.
Mark
It's alright for a quick cheap lunch. Food is tasty and portions are a good size. Eating in you could get a bit squeezed but that's alright.

Price: $
Food quality: 5/5
Food variety: 5/5
Customer service: 5/5
Atmosphere: 4/5

Dining at Thailander was wonderful! At first, the place seemed really empty and the tables looked a little unclean but the food and customer service from staff, made up for it! I ordered the Tom Kha (Curry-like soup), Thai Green Curry, Fried Chicken and Chicken Pad Thai and all of them were full of flavour and cooked in home-style. The prices were great and worth it. We organised a surprise birthday cake for our friend and the staff were so cooperative and helpful! Will definitely come back soon!
Shit food, shit service, shit restaurant.
Don't even try this.
This place has every potential but fails.
Inauthentic Thai food, doesn't even taste like food. Enough said.

Lovely little place for cheap Thai food. I like how they give us lemon wedges and extra peanut on the side. We have had all the noodles dishes and can say that they taste pretty good for the price. A very budget friendly place for students.

I really like it.! i'm quite partial to a bit of chilli now and found their chilli fried rice to have just the right amount of punch for me.. I have also had their cashew stir fry that was slightly on the sweet side but still lovely.

Salads were good - grilled meats done well.
Melbourne lacks the Thai with street food options like Sydney so I was excited to see a slightly different menu with Thailander... I was happy, but not over the moon, after first trying Thailander.
Crisb
Food is awesome!!! The Thai basil stir fry was the best I've ever had. Large portions too! Went back twice in one week. Order ahead of you can as there can sometimes be a long wait.

Bland and tasteless food, ignored special request. Thailander is a little lunch place on Little Collins that seems to cater to the local suits. It also has a branch in Lonsdale Street which I have frequented and reviewed. What a difference between the two branches! I ordered a crispy pork belly with chilli and basil stirfry with the request that it be extra spicy. What emerged from the kitchen was a tasteless and bland stir fry with soggy vegetables, served up in a cardboard box with impossibly flimsy plastic forks and spoons. What was particularly disappointing was they completely ignored my special request and there was virtually zero chilli in it. To their credit, when I complained the staff did offer to bring out some chillies, but those were equally flavourless and lacked kick. Seriously avoid this place like the plague if you are looking for authentic Thai food that hasn't been watered down for the masses. A better bet is Ratee Thai off Flinders Street or even the Thailander branch on Lonsdale Street.

I'm writing this review because I'm bored waiting 1/2 hour for my pad Thai to arrive
Thomas Hatcher
Better than I expected. With paper plates and plastic cutlery for dine in customers, my expectations weren't that high. They actually delivered a pretty decent $10 pad Thai, with peanuts and bean sprouts. Not in the same league as mr nice guy by any means, but if you're around Collins st and after a quick bite, I could recommend this restaurant.
Christina Ashley
Friendly staff. Cool, casual atmosphere. Good was good and came quickly.

Good but too much rice/noodle..... The Thailander is right around the corner from my office, one day I decided to check it out. Ordering process is easy, wait time is short.
The first time, I ordered I choose the Tom Ka Soup, Vegetarian with noodles. The flavour was devine lots of vege but way too much Noodles for me personally. Today, I decided to have something different, Massaman curry and it was delicious but again not enough beef and like 2 cups of rice. I would definitely go back for the soup minus the noodles and curry, I wouldn't have again.
For a cheap eat its great $9.9 curry and rice, flavour is pleasant but portion of meat vs rice not right!
I would go back but I wouldnt say running back to go there
Starrie
It's okay... Walked passed here and thought we'd check it out. We love Thai food. And there isn't really many Thai restaurants this side of the city.

My partner had the Chicken Pad Thai. It was okay, was missing that charred wok flavour. And I had the tom yum soup with noodles which is okay as well. We also had a piece of roti each, it was quite stale but the dipping sauce made up for it. Overall it was an average meal.
Rebakis
A lovely meal. Great place to grab a meal with friends. Quick, good service, an array of additional condiments and all at an affordable price.

Went home full and happy :)

LARD NA - globules of gloop from glugsville. I have been a customer of your Little Collins St store for some time. I liked the curry and rice dishes. I wanted to try your entire menu. I tried the Lard Na just now and I felt like vomiting. It was covered in thick inedible gravy, I had two bites and couldn't stomach it. I told the cook who said that that was just the way it was. It was revolting. I don't see how anyone can eat it. There should either be a picture of it totally coverd in the gravy. Or the gravy should be better. Or gravy should be on the bottom. It was such a horrible meal I gave it back to the chef. And he just defended his meal and I walked out hungry and $12 poorer. Horrible experience.
Richardlane1966
Great good. Visited this restaurant with my Thai girlfriend (lived in Samui) and we both loved the food, spicy enough with good customer service. Love the massaman curry, beef cooked just right. Thai girlfriend didn't even need to add dry curry and she from Issan. Recommend strongly
Deliriously Delish
Affordable & tasty lunch gem!. This is one humble place serving up delicious dishes. Am so in love with their Prik Khing with crispy pork belly and chinese broccoli with pork belly. Pad see ew is the second on the list if you feel like noodles. Overall ambience is good with friendly service. Authenticity is pretty close considering this is Melbourne, so don't expect anything you can get out of the streets of Bangkok. Still, these guys did well and will definitely keep me coming back.
Marc Cheong
Average thai for a good price. If your looking for the authentic stuff, keep moving. An ok fast food alternative for a fair price.

Bemused and unimpressed. When you get to the door, you need to turn the door knob up, rather than down. That's the first part that got me, but is a slight sign of things to come (not in a good way either).
Have been here twice now to try two staple Thai dishes (I grew up in Thailand, so I sort of know my way around this).
Day 1: Cripsy Pork Belly with Chinese Broccoli (large). The pork was cooked well, but not crispy enough, and the sauce gave slight hints of the traditional version, but overall was a mediocre dish. An extra $2 for the pork mind you, and although they let you pick other forms of protein, this dish isn't meant to be served with any other kind. That was the second part that got me, and it started to feel like an overdone, but regular take away joint (pick your meat, sauce and carbs and they just put it together).
Day 2: Chicken with Thai basil (large) with a fried egg. This is by far the main dish I would try at any Thai restaurant. I'll skip ahead, and I would give it a 4/10. The chicken was overcooked, the basil wasn't Thai, and the fried egg was fine. I asked for it to be served with minced chicken and was quoted an additional $2 - don't understand why. The dish was served quickly enough, but failed to live up to any expectations.
Food isn't bad, but it isn't what it should be at a place called Thailander - too far from authentic, and not good enough to justify the excursion when there is an extremely tidy place called Ratee Thai not too far away.
Pbowens
Good value Thai. Good but not great food.. I ordered the Massaman curry (beef), which came in just under $10. The serving size was very generous. A lot of beef and sauce, generous helping of potatoes all on top of a big mound of rice. I only got the regular size, but you can also upgrade to the large. The regular should be plenty big enough for most people though.

The curry was ok. The beef was a little dry and the sauce, although pleasant, was by no means the best I've had.

The restaurant itself felt pretty good. Nicely laid out, friendly staff, plenty of seats. I'll come back and try a few other dishes.

Overall though, if you feel like a curry, only have $10 and are very hungry, you could do a lot worse than this place.
Lydiapebbles
Pad thai was too wet. Friday team lunch at the newly opened thailander: chicken pad thai. Rather disappointing based on the raved reviews by other bloggers. Simply too wet and not much depth in flavours... @@
David
Great authentic Thai food, fresh ingredients. Very reasonable prices for the CBD. Pork belly dishes are fantastic. Casual feel inside. Highly recommend.

Quick, casual & authentic Thai food. Nothing fanciful, only authentic home-made Thai receipes delivered in a Fast food fashion, both affordable and delicious – curries (massaman, red, yellow, green), Noodles (pad Thai, pad see ewe, pad khee mao, lard na), stir-fry (basil, cashew, prik khing, oyster sauce, pork belly) and soups (tom yum, tom kha).

Thailander’s interior is pretty cosy with a few tables and benches for punters wishing to dine in.
