Review Southern China Style Cuisine - Melbourne

The restaurant is usually quiet and sometimes we wonder if it’s open. My friend finally decided to try the steamed pork buns yesterday and it is way too small compared to what other restaurants are offering. From their menu, prices seem reasonable, but judging from the serving size, I’m not sure now 🤔 Seems to have many options for vegetarians!

Really yummy! The Chinese broccoli is awesome with garlic. Delicious dumplings. We had a beer while we waited for our takeaway…overlooking the water… How good!

We were a bit worried that we were the only customers at 730pm on a Saturday night. But we were willing to give it a try. The food were authentic and we were impressed. We talked to the owner and he's actually very nice and I can practice my Mandarin. Overall it was a good night and we will go back. :)

A hidden gem. The restaurant may look its closed from the outside but its open. The one man restaurant who is the owner/manager/waiter/chef/kitchen hand is amazingly quick and cooked delicious food. Very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

I really rate the chef here. He really understands flavours. Very authentic and tasty. Glad they are still in business after 2 difficult years.

We were a bit worried when we were the only people in the place at 6pm on a Saturday evening before a footy match at Marvel, but the owner/chef/server was nice, the food was pretty good, nice and fresh and hot. Good flavours and reasonably priced. We would eat here again.

Served so quick without queue, stuff is nice and friendly, tasting is alright. Good place for work lunch.

This place is terrible. The staff don't know what they are doing. The manager lady is rude. She made a mistake with our order and then tried to blame me. No need to get aggressive just because you stuffed up. Food took incredibly long to be served up and it tasted horrible. The fried pork buns are dried and bland. The chicken and prawn dumplings didnt taste like the had prawns in it. And the chicken and prawn wontons woeful. strongly do NOT recommend. Save your money and go else where.

I've only ever had the fried dumplings and Shanghai fried noodles here, but numerous times. Never disappoints.

I loved how fast the food was being served at Southern China Style Cuisine. Great big portions too!

Ordered:
🥟 Boiled pork dumplings (12 pcs): $11.00
🍝 Shanghai fried noodle: $12.00
🍝 Sichuan noodles

Review:
Out of the 3 dishes we got, my favourite was the shanghai fried noodle. Saturated with flavour, it was easy to eat and share with my friends!
Dumplings had a thick skin but were fun to waterboard into the soy sauce, and sichuan noodles had thin tender noodles.

Service was lacklustre, and the self service station water glasses had little stains which had me picking and choosing.

Overall, Southern China Style Cuisine provided fast, efficient, and flavourful food that's great for a quick lunch!

Extremely disappointing. Mate and I Left starving. Service was prompt and ok...but portion sizing and flavour was way off. Ordered a main menu size Spicy Fish Soup which would ordinarily feed at least two decent eaters at other restaurants as it usually comes out in a big bowl. What came out was an embarrassment for what we paid...$30 odd dollars later with some steamed rice and left licking the lips for more. Thought i'd try somewhere different this time as the usual place was closed...what a mistake!

I normally head down to Panda Loves Fish where their lunch special Spicy Fish costs $12.50 including rice...it's bigger and actually has taste and a good chilli kick as you would expect from Sichuan cuisine.

Avoid...alternatively head to the nearby Panda Loves Fish for your well priced authentic Chinese fix and save a few buck in your pocket.
Gus' Gastro Review
It has been a long time between reviews. I'm saddened that a weekend away culminated with an experience that prompted a return to writing for reasons all too important to remain unaddressed.

Service: The casually dressed waiter, looking like he was dragged out of bed. His respones to all questions were blunt, unenthusiastic and forced. His priority was his smart phone not customers. Everything was a chore. Food arrived timely, only because dumplings were straight from the freezer.

Food: Disgraceful. I have never eaten such rubbish in Melbourne. The hokkien chicken dish was a salt laden packet job with nothing remotely resembling freshness. The chicken was fatty and grey indicating a cheap cut and/or an old chook frozen for a long period. Chicken soup was a gooey glag, pre cooked, scraped off the floor, congealed mess of embarassement. Only a careless, senile chef with a penchant for misery would be proud of such horrific efforts.

Atmosphere: None

Value: Prices are resonable for this area, but you'd be mad to ever eat here.

Potential: Fire the front off house and the chef, change the name and rid yourself of this reputation, other reviews are accurate. I highly recommend you consider an alternative, no matter how desparate you are.

Upon leaving I made sure to voice my vehemont distaste and disappointment for the meal. The waiter did not entertain any criticism. I refused to pay for the chicken soup (first time I have ever done this) but relented when the waiter became argumentative. Hence this review, to be shared, as much as possible.

The worst possible noodles I have ever had! I asked for stir fried noodles and was served a bowl of boiled noodles topped with veggies after 15 mins of wait during crucial office lunch time! It is such a shame to have a bad restaurant near you workplace. One less option!

We ordered a server of the Steamed "shrimp" shao-mai after confirming with the staff they are shrimp as none of us eat pork. This dumplings came put and the Shrimp on top of them confirmed there was shrimp present in the dish. However the fist bite revealed they were pork dumpling with a tiny shrimp as garnish... I took the plate back to the counter and raised my concerns with the staff member to confirm whether there was actual prawn or shrimp in the dumpling. she wasn't sure herself and asked her colleague who confirmed that they were pork dumplings. I told her that none of us eat pork and that's why I confirm before ordering if they were brought that she said yes her response was just "sorry". They didn't offer a refund they didn't even offer a complimentary soft drink that's all they said sorry I waited for a couple of seconds to see if there were offer any compensation the staff member just turned to a colleague and started speaking in I'm getting Chinese that's when we walked out

Outdoor and indoor seating. Sichuan style cuisine. Ordered the prawn chicken dumplings. Food comes out relatively quick except for the dumplings. Waiter had to look at the menu to deciphere which meal we ordered. Dunplings are poorly made. Skin is doughy and thick with some parts uncooked; meat is bland. Other then that, food is average.

Average Chinese food along the quiet end of the Docklands waterfront. We came for lunch with a large group and preordered, food came out scattered and staff weren't entirely sure of what each dish was. The pepper beef noodles was a large portion but the beef was luke warm and the dish was was average in flavour overall. The restaurant was freezing cold inside with no heating. The hot tea was a small plus.

The best southern Chinese food I ever try in Melbourne! We ordered salted duck, sweet and sour tried fish, stir fried beans and clay pot tofu! You must try the fish!! So fresh and yummy 👍🏼👍🏼

My friend & i had a vege noodle soup, shredded pork on rice, steamed pork & prawn dumplings and shrimp on rice pops. Food was average (dumplings the worst, shredded pork the best among the 4 dishes), price was not bad, but customer service was below average. Especially charging $1 per plastic box for leftovers threw me off.

Staff hardly had no clue about customer service. Just bought food & dump on the table. Didn't know their own menu when enquire about food. Dumpling tasted doughy, Sichuan sliced pork was lacking of authentic flavour & pork slices were so dry like it was made from frozen pork. Spring roll tasted like they added cinnamon which is so unusual in flavour & lacking of good ingredients, fried chicken wings were rubbish! Some what retro Asian urban style interior looks nice. Overall rating 2.2*
The Swine
The Swine ventured along the water at Docklands for a feed today. Southern China Style got the nod as the Swine had a hankering for dumpings! Unfortunately the experience was not so great. A long wait for chow was a poor start but it was the quality and taste of the chicken and prawn dumplings which was the main let down. Lacked flavour and taste. Very ordinary. The Swine thinks the seafood noodles looked good but was told these were also quite mediocre. Place did look cool which brought on the curiousity. Bugger hey. With a double whammy of pig snorts this place is NOT Swine approved. Poor.

Came here for Chinese New Year dinner tonight (we chose this place because most Chinese restaurants in the CBD were fully booked) in a group of five. It wasn't too busy - there were around three other huge tables of people also having their CNY dinner. It was too bad we weren't able to sit outside, we asked if we could sit on one of the tables outside but they said it was reserved. Well FYI I made a booking too? I found their staff quite disorganized. We placed our orders and ordered a few beers as well as heaps of dishes but our beers didn't even come until our first dish has been on the table for over five minutes. All they had to do was take them out of the fridge and open them with a can-opener! How hard is that? I know they were also busy taking care of other orders but still it was a simple task. As for the dishes, they were a bit hit and miss - some were nice but some were average. I would recommend the fermented beancurd water spinach, braised pork knuckle and Nanjing salted duck (the three pictures along with this review). The braised pork belly is the house specialty (in Chinese it'a called dong po rou, it is a single big slice of pork belly with a sweetish flavour and when it's done right you will only taste the sweetness and softness of the skin but not the fatness). Prices here are reasonable and portion sizes are also quite big, making it a good choice for gatherings or even just a simple meal. The interior is not fancy but comfortable enough. I would prefer sitting outside by the promenade when the weather permits. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food in Docklands, it's alright to give this place a go.

I'm not sure whether it was the plastic water cups, the chipped crockery, forgetting our tea order or running out of the Peking duck. This was a memorable meal for the wrong reasons. My prawn and wanton soup was good, but the battered fish in Szechuan sauce was more batter than fish. $40

Pathetic service and very long waiting hours!

We waited for more than 1.5 hours for our order and it was not served even after that time! What's worst is when I walked up to check if the food would be delivered, I was told I will have to wait further. But they were good enough to provide a refund at the second I asked for my order to be cancelled (of course having waited patiently for 1 hour 40 mins and odd seconds only!!!!!)

Bad service in all. The people there seemed like apprentices! And one of them served a peanut curry chicken when a friend asked for Schezwan chicken and claimed that it was the same dish she'd ordered! God save people that come with peanut allergies!!

Average food, but worst of all Poor service, .. Waited for almost an hour for the meal. No compensation or remorse from the operators. Never to return..!

I have tried their fried pork bun, prawn & chicken dumplings and braised pork there. I will comment them respectively. Their fried pork bun is amazing that I haven't had any fried pork bun like this even in china(Shanghai). Be careful when u eat it since the juice might come out, that is the reason though why the bun so stunning. The sesame in the bottom also makes the bun not just looks good, but also taste different. The prawn & chicken dumplings are something between the staple food and snacks. I never thought that dumplings can be treated as a snack, but this one, this one u got to try. The braised pork is a famous cuisine back to china and hardly seen in Melbourne, so I decided to order that which its picture on the menu was also pretty. Actually, the picture might not well present the braised pork itself, by which I mean it looks even better than the picture. I have no ideas how they prepared the sauce but that was absolutely fantastic. I am not the person for fat meat but this one is totally fine for me. I always want to see docklands have a nice Chinese restaurant with nice price, since docklands have the best view around the CBD area, and now I found one.
