Quality service. Solid Katsu Curry & Omurice.
Authentic and fresh Japanese food. Love the sashimi here and Katsu curry! Simple food, good prices and lovely staff. Would love to see this place refurbished to help it reach its full potential
Oh my god this place. At first I was like what a dump then they brought the food out slowly and within a VERY short period of time I was in LOVE. The food is so nice and prepared with love and care and it is SO cheap. I'm very glad my friend brough me here and il be back soon I promise. Don't change sakana. Ever.
Yummy, fresh food. The tempura prawns are the best I've had. The food comes out quick. Definitely good for a casual lunch, also is reasonably priced.
At first while entering we noticed that the place was mostly for take aways as it dint have much of a proper seating. Also being winters they dint even had the heating on but still we managed being our first time. We ordered the Bento box B and C along with the teriyaki chicken rolls. The rolls were really good. coming to Bento box, they had a lot of variety and is a good enough meal for a person, Both of them were decent and taste was good. The prices are very reasonable. So for the next time I can think of take away bit not dine-in.
Not a pretty little cafe but the I got the Nigiri pack and a seaweed salad. They made it all fresh after I ordered and the young lady who served me was really nice to me and waited as I took my time trying to find what I wanted! Hot food looks delish, might have to come back another time. Only loss of .5 as the seating and decor was awkward, otherwise it was great!
The cafe is a little drab, better for takeaway but they have a cute fish tank and the food is delicious. Love getting the bento box and a miso soup. The sushi is always good and most of the time they make it fresh for you which is fantastic if you're getting anything that's crispy.
I love the omurice here! So hearty and warm on a cold winters day.
My partner had the miso nasu, the miso eggplant dish. It was pretty average.
Not a great place to dine in, and the language barrier is a problem when ordering over the phone. They often get it wrong. The food, however, is always fresh, and yummy. The meat is clean, and the rice is cooked well. I can look past everything else for the food. But no eftpos, and you MUST have them read your order back to you when placing your order.
Not probably a great place to sit down and eat, but as a local takeaway its good. Fresh', made on the spot, authentic and not over priced. Thumbs up from me.
Lovely japanese food. I always order the omurice because it never fails to disappoint. Also the sushi tastes fresh and delicious. The service is very friendly.
The food taste so fresh, VERY DIFFERENT TO THR PLACES YOU EAT IN THE SHOPPING CENTRE however the place looks unhygienic and very unwelcoming to people who wants to dine in... It's humid in there and not pleasant to eat food there
For the price though, you can't really complain too much! We were SO full afterwards, and I am ashamed to admit I had to leave behind food. Sakana is not a bad place for a quick & cheap meal.
Sakana is certainly a little delight of Preston. Having visited Japan several times I think sakana is one of the most traditional Japanese cafes in Melbourne. I work nearby and regularly visit for one of their excellent value bento boxes. Bento c is probably my favourite - the gyoza are to die for. It's a little rough around the edges appearance wise, but the quality food for a good price keeps drawing me back.
Love that they make the sushi fresh for you. I asked for avocado rolls with no mayonnaise and plain inari and it was delicious, much better than what just sits there all day. Service is also really great. Definitely best sushi I've had in the Northern suburbs. Only downside is it's quite expensive for sushi. My favourite place in the city is 80c cheaper per roll.
Great for Vegetarian food and affordable. The Curry Tofu Rice is sensational. It's so tasty and great value at the price of $8.20. I get this meal about twice a week. Only fault is that they don';t have a 'baymarre' or somewhere hot where they can put their meal under a hot light which means if you are even a minute late to pick up your meal it's somewhat cold. The best vego option in Preston.
Gone downhill.. I was disappointed this time around food was not as fresh and tasty as all other times I have been. Slow service and average food... Not the sakana I have come to love.
Found this place they Urbanspoon. I had Chicken Teriyaki and partner had Bento Box C, it was so yummy. So glad I've discovered this place. What a little gem!
Always happy with the food and service here. The sushi is always fresh and tastes good. Really nice staff too.
It is my favorite!. My friend told me that Sakana is his favorite. His family visits the little shop regularly. I tried last Friday.
And now, it is my favorite, too!
It's not a big one, even not a restaurant. But it has very fresh salmon, and very good hot food. We tried Tofu curry Rice, and the Bento A. We love the food very much.
By the way, Friday night is not a good time. They are so busy. lots of phone calls, and lots of people were waiting there. But my wife said it means they are a good shop!
It has good food, nice service, and cheap price. lots of meals under AU$10.00.
We will back!
Lovely food, friendly staff. We had a voucher for 2 bento boxes and 2 canned drinks. (we went twice)
It is a take-away cafe style place, not many tables but not too busy at lunchtime.
First time we had the chicken katsu bento box and a seafood bento box.
Everything was nice but the katsu was very dry. And the tiny maki rolls had no fish in them.
Service was friendly and not too long to wait, all food was tasty and fresh.
Second time we both had chicken & beef teriyaki and requested the maki rolls with salmon in them. Service was friendly and they were happy to give us the salmon maki. We also ordered green tea icecream which was only 2.60 - most japanese places charge at least 4.00 and some give a much smaller serve. Only issue was the young waitress, who seemed very shy and had difficulty making eye contact, went past our table many times even when we were finished, and never asked if we needed anything, had to ask for tea top up and the dirty plates were not taken away even when dessert was served, which is below par, I don't realy want to smell cold food smells when eating a sweet.
But we would definitely go back, food was tasty and good quality and cheap.

Great ,cheap little eat in place not glamorous but manages to produce great tasting food love love the gyoza and my son adores the sushi here
Magnificent Tofu Curry. I used to just but their sushi rolls which they make fresh if they have run out. But then I started volunteering in the area and walked up for lunch one day, and ordered their tofu curry. It was spectacularly fresh and melts in your mouth. Well worth the wait.

Food is good, service is shocking, groupon left a lot to be desired (very limited choices) but if its good food you're after and don't mind waiting forever.. This is a decent restaurant
Good, honest, simple, freshly made food. What else can you expect for the price. Will definitely go back for more.

Yum. Very nice and fairly simple dishes, have only been here on a few occasions but will keep coming back to try some new dishes. Service is very friendly and fast (it's been fairly quiet each time I've been) and the prices are very reasonable - 10 bucks should sort you out for dinner and leave you with a full stomach. Big thumbs up, would thoroughly recommend.
I love Sakana!. Seriously, I go to Sakana at least once a week. There can be times where they are run off their feet and service can take a little longer than usual, but isnt that the same at most places. Look, it is not a high end restaurant, so don't go there if that is what you're expecting. If you are after very good, tasty food at a very reasonable price, go here.
I have the green beans, tofu mago and chicken terryiaki. Cannot fault it at all.
Two very enthusiastic thumbs up.
Home-cooked feel. Have been here twice already and have had 2 great experiences. Both were when there wasn't much of a crowd, even so the first time I had to wait 15 mins, te second much less. Have tried their miso, katsu curry don and sakana sushi box, all were excellent. Very, very happily with quality and freshness. It's a family-run business and while I can see that waiting too long for what appears to be a primarily take-away venue in terms of appearance, it does give you great jap food at really good prices. Will keep going there for sure
Good cheap Japanese although service can be quite slow. The staff are friendly and the food is fresh!
Humble and Delicious with.... In a country where the customer is very rarely made to feel right about anything (as opposed to the opposite in Japan) this place is a real treat - you are treated as a customer should be - with great respect and friendliness. The cafe itself is clean and simple, there is no great "Nihon" atmosphere, but the food is fresh, of quality, and affordable. The menu is extensive enough to keep me going back and go back I shall... >u
Very nice. Great little Japanese eat in/takeaway. Reasonably priced.
Yum! Generous portions compared to most japanese restaurants. Food is a little slow to come out but totally worth the wait. Recommend the pork katsu don and the gyoza.
Good quick eat. This is a nice place to get a quick bite not traditional Japanese but does satisfy mid week cravings
Not fancy but great casual place to eat. I wouldn't recommend this for a birthday or a date, but the food is excellent and reasonably priced and the people are really nice.
The nigiri came out first and looked deliciously colourful. There were three salmon nirigi, two prawns and an egg one, and they came with a dishlette of wasabi on the side. These morsels were so fresh, clean and tender, they disappeared within a minute.
Friendly staff. Food wasn’t particularly fast but taste okay. The waitress gave my food to the wrong table, they almost dug into it before the waitress realized her mistake and just passed it onto me. Felt a little unhygienic but I was hungry so didn’t complain. Overall was okay.
Really great, fresh sushi with a range of other meal options.
Nice food, the taste is very good. and service is great .
Yummy Japanese curry. Ordered online. Order was correct, fresh, and packed well. Delivery was safe and fast!
