Behind the spotlight of DHP presents the best Malatang broth in Melbourne (in my opinion, that is).

So many friends have suggested to me this tiny rundown looking hotpot restaurant inside the shopping arcade. Could be cleaner if that would be nice, but definitely reminds me of the traditional family-owned restaurants in Asia that serve the best tasting comfort food.

We ordered the medium hot Malatang broth and it had the perfect balance of savoury and sweetness, and was gushing with aroma.

The cheese balls are a must when you visit here, as well as their other seafood balls. They have a variety of meats, balls, seafood, noodles, and vegetables just like the other hot pot restaurants.

For a big bowl for two, Mrs Zan's serves a hearty filling meal at a reasonable price.

One of the best hotpot places I've been. They have a great selection of ingredients to choose from which were all pretty fresh, I especially love that they have sea cucumber
Had the mild and it was quite mild indeed, I'll probably go with medium the next time (I tried my sis'). Everything were cooked pretty well, the soup was quite flavorful, might be a bit too salty but again it's hotpot.

Overall pretty satisfied with my dish and would recommend :)

I love the Malatang here. The broth is delicious and the spicyness is just right! The condiments are good and the selection of food is very good in the self service section. I love the purple sweet potato noodles and the greens. I'd like to come back and try the dry option with rice. The staff are very nice and I like eating here, it's great value!

Great little place in a walkway between Bourke Street and Little Bourke Street. Not too big and nicely busy.
This is a place wheee you grab a large (and I mean massive) bowl and a pair of rings and choose what you’d like in your meal. If you’re vego, perfect! If you’re vegan, perfect! If you like your seafood or meat, perfect!
There is lamb, beef, pork but not much chicken. Plenty of vegetables and tofu. Seafood in abundance. At the start, you can add some spices and blends to your bowl which is added to the work when everything is cooked. Preparation time is around 5 - 10 minutes so if you’re after a quick feed, this place will work well for you.
Food is weighed and you pay by the weight. You can also choose your spice level from 1 chilli 🌶 yo 5 🌶
There are signs up about allergies so please read if this is relevant to you.
Staff are helpful but really, not needed other than weighing your food, taking your money and delivering food to your table.
You can purchase drinks here as well but I couldn’t recognise the ‘tea’ bottle I bought. Whatever it was, it was tasty.
Note: wheelchair friendly, disabled access, kid friendly.

Mrs. Zan's Kitchen in China town is my favorite Malatang place in Melbourne CBD. Simply because of two reasons, it is just $2.99/100 grams, the broth is just delicious and flavorsome. Thanks to my close friend, who took me to this place that I have fallen in love with instantly. This place is near to all other competitors like Dragon Hotpot, David's Malatang, etc. and I bet once you try this place, you will probably think twice. I have waited in line for more than 25 mins to get into one of those 'famous' hotpot outlet chains in Swanston and Russel.

The spread is quite lovely, and they have my favorite spinach noodles, Chinese donut, lotus root, black fungus, fish balls, kinds of seafood, etc. There is no big rush like other outlets, which is excellent. Once you made your selection, weight, it tells them your preference of spicy level. There is only one selection of soup, and it is the best. You can even ask them to make it dry if you like and I have tried both, It's personal preference.

The place has a minimum card payment of $25, which is a bummer, and the weight should be 400 grams(or 500grams I don't remember to be honest). However, they accept WeChat pay and Alipay.

They also have all sorts of chilies, peanut butter paste, etc. on the corner of the store. The peanut butter paste is my favorite, and I love dipping my ingredients in it before I gulp them down. It is a lip-smacking experience, and I loved it. I have been many times and would like to go back again. I believe a 5-star review is something which you give when you are completely satisfied, and even all of your friends evenly node their heads, and they go, yes! Until next time, keep up the good work, guys.

The best malatang once can get. The sauce is phenomenal. Get the dry option with ramen and the potato noodle.

One thing I like about their soup base is that it's not too salty or spicy and you don't feel thirsty even if you drink a lot of soup. It's like a lighter version of malatang that I can enjoy for a weekday lunch.

Was super excited to try this place because I’ve heard people liked it better than dragon hotpot. Like how?!
Walking in with high expectations I quickly made my bowl. Same concept as dragon but a bit cheaper at $2.99 per 100 grams. Minus the long lines

Ordered the spicy level to be hot.

The broth is warm and spicy. Not as spicy as dragon for hot level. If I’m comparing, the broth is a bit lighter than dragons.

I prefer my heavier broths so I still like dragon hotpot better but that’s personal preference.

They do have a small sauce station though which is good

There are certain of conditions you need to be aware of:
1. Minimum 400g per bowl
2. EFTPOS minimum is $25.00

Ordered:
🍜 Malatang: gourmet instant noodles lol ($21.30)

My mate took us to mrs zan's and I was not disappointed!
You get to choose your soup spicy level out of Mild/Medium/Hot/Extra hot and Extreme Hot. We chose the lowest spice, mild, and it had enough heat for me to warm the insides of mouth, but not enough that I saw my life flashing before my eyes.

Cheaper than dragon hotpot, I'd say this should be on your hitlist if you're going to scope out malatang places in Melbourne CBD.

Side note: I like the massive wooden ladles Mrs Zan give. It's so unnecessarily extra but a nice fancy little touch to an otherwise plain dish.
What also made me laugh was when they labelled enoki mushroom as 'needle mushroom'. That's some iconic humour that sticks inside my head.

Great selection of food to choose from.
Mrs Zan’s kitchen is very affordable and delicious. The flavour is also not too spicy compared to other hot pot restaurants.

However it can get very busy and be squishy in terms of seating. So I wouldn’t recommend coming here in a group that big as it’ll be hard to sit altogether.

First time coming to a MaLaTang place, and was a pretty good experience. There are a wide selection of fresh ingredients for $2.99/100g. There are 5 spicy-ness levels from mild to extra (x5) hot and chose spicy, which I chose at spicy and could say that it’s very fragrant and the best part of the dish.
There’s also water available on the side and other garnishes which I didn’t notice until halfway through eating. Service was great and would come here again!

Mrs Zan’s Kitchen was our first malatang experience. We stumbled across this newly opened place whilst walking in Chinatown. We love the idea of “creating your own hotpot” because it meant we could customise what noodles, type of meat, seafood and soup we wanted. The price point was quite cheap compared to competitors, charging $3 per 100g. But let’s talk about the soup base (we got the mild one)! It was super creamy and full of flavour. We believe it would be a great cure for a hangover... Highly recommended if you want to see what Melbourne has recently been hyped up with as many restaurants have opened with a similar concept.

Pick your own ingredients and they’ll have it cooked for you! There’s a decent variety to choose from. You can choose the level of spiciness for your broth and the broth is tasty. Service is polite and efficient. Always am up for a good time at Mrs Zan’s.

Good service and cheap eats. The gravy for medium spiciness was just spot on. Some ingredients are just not worth but be smart in choosing what to put into your noodles. Will definitely be back.

Wide variety of selection.
$2.99/100g
Told them Spicy but they gave me medium spicy tag instead?
But it was ok. Spicy but would go for a milder option to savour the soup base. It was really yummy.
Special stuff: Cheese Rice Cake Fish Ball, Pumpkin Rice Cake,
Purple sweet potato noodles, cheesy balls.

Another malatang shop pops up in the CBD - luckily it's a good one. Good variety of fresh ingredients, and the broth is creamy and spice level is customised. Slightly on the salty side though. The price is also a little cheaper at $3, compared to $3.20 elsewhere.

The broth is so goooooddd~ the choices are a lot. You can choose level of spiciness. $2.99/100g~ which is a good price. Need to be a bit hot, not the spiciness but the steaminess(?) So its warm instead of hot kind off. Other than that 👌🏻👌🏻

my favourite malatang spot in the city so far. The ingredients are fresh and clean. The soup is well balanced with the right amount of spiciness. Self serve lemon water and sources available.

Was so excited to see a new malatang joint opening up in Melbourne CBD! This place is conveniently located in the Asian foodie haven at 206 Bourke Street shopping mall. A really cute, clean and brightly lit interior, and the venue is small but very cosy.

With a similar concept to other malatang places, you get a bowl and select your own ingredients from the fridge. You pay by weight - this place does $2.99/100g (cheaper than most other places I’ve seen!). Depending on how much you get, the price can very quite a bit!

They have a wide variety of ingredients to choose from, many of which we hadn’t seen before at other joints. They have a lot of fresh vegetables, and many kinds of fish balls and tofu. I highly recommend getting the fried dough stick - it absorbs all the flavour from the soup and gets nice and soft and chewy, absolutely amazing! The soup itself is very nice and flavourful, without being overly oily or heavy. You can choose the level of spiciness (we got mild which was not spicy at all, I’d probably recommend trying a higher level if you like some heat). Definitely prefer this cleaner taste over some other joints which tend to be a bit too oily.

I’d definitely recommend trying out Mrs Zan’s if you like hot pot-style food, or if you just need a nice meal to keep warm in winter!

The premise is for customers to go pick their toppings and ingredients for the soup. You also get to pick the level of spiciness for the soup. This shop seem to have some unique toppings that the other similar concept shops didn't offer. Overall soup is pretty good but nothing too special compared to the others.

My favorite spot to grab some good hotpot especially on cold days. Prices are cheaper and variety of options to put onto your hotpot. If you want some hotpot, this is a yood place to try.

I love this hotpot so much. I love the range of ingredients to choose from. And the taste of the hotpot is just unmatched! However, there should really be more space between the tables and definitely create a more spacious environment. The staff were friendly and very polite. I always come back here as my go-to hotpot place!
