B-E-S-T Anglo Chinese on the planet. Have been going for 20 years. Still the same each and every time.
The Dim Sims are world famous. Take some home frozen..
Really good quality and tasty home-style Asian food. The fried rice was full of flavour and the chop suey had a good amount of vegetable. Take away service was spot on.
We revisited this place after 11 months. This time for a full meal. The service was great. Nice, friendly staff. The place was at capacity but they still managed to get our food to us in about ~12 minutes. The dim sims are outstanding - sweet. This place has been here since 1970, and still owned and run by the original family. My favourite meal was the satay chicken. Nice and spicy.
Ok for anyone who read the negative reviews, if you are looking for the next flower drum don't bother coming here. But for those of you who are looking for good solid Chinese meals at very respectable prices look no further. My family has been eating at this restaurant regularly for over 40 years, and will continue to do so while the tai Wah continues to wheel out the best lemon chicken, dim sims and special fried rice in the bayside area. Well worth a visit by anyone who can appreciate seriously good Chinese fare at extremely cheap prices in a "nostalgic " decor.
These are without doubt the best Dim Sims in Melbourne! It's been a secret for a very long time, at least 20 years. Much better than anything the South Melbourne market can provide. The same Chinese grandma comes in weekly to make hundreds and they sell out. Every taxi driver I've ask to take me to Mentone has always said "excellent I'm get a few dozen dim sims". Don't eat in, just join the long numbers of people buying buckets of the best cold dims anywhere, but please don't say I told you.
The Only Chinese We Eat For the Last 20 Years. Yum, tradition
Dim Sims. Tai Wah favourite. Famous and well worth the drive.
Fav takeout. I live in Mentone and Tai Wah is my fav take away place. For the price, the special fried rice is full of big piece of chicken and prawn. The sweet & sour pork is another of my fav.
If you are looking for a lush dining experience, this is probably not the place. But if you are looking for a simple take away local dish for weeknights that taste good, this is the place to go.
Never judge a book by its cover. May not look the best but here you will get the best dim sims in melbourne! Better than the SMM. Try the special chop suey and singapore noodles. Very consistent, great servings and good tasty food
This place hasn't changed in 30 years. Super busy both in the restaurant and take away customers. Food was tasty, hot and cheap! ! What else can you ask for. Tip for takeaway-call ahead to avoid the crowded waiting area.
Best dim sim in Melbourne, and the garlic prawns is to die for! If you haven't been here, you're missing out! Get on it!
Let's not worry about any other menu items these are simply the best dim sims in Australia! The beat those over peppered south Melbourne ones any time. Every time I get a taxi to Mentone the driver thanks me for letting him bring a few dozen frozen dim sims home. The maxi size spring rolls are magnificent and the special fried rice has generous size prawns, large slices of chicken breast and even crisp BBQ pork slices. It's to die for. I live in Perth and have a case of each sent every month. Don't miss any chance you have to go here!
Contradictio'ne. Ok. Far from authentic Cantonese Chinese. Very western Aussie Chinese. We could not bring ourselves to eat here in the early days. Would give it 3/10 11 years ago.
HOWEVER...
We have found ourselves enjoying a small selection of menu items. Agreed with many others, the aussie style dim sims (sums) are tasty and big. And the Cantonese beef is delicious, large serve, fresh, tender and very cheap. Under $10.
Be clear Tai Wah is no Flowerdrum or Plume. But for a quick, cheap, select few dishes Tai Wah is a very good casual week day choice.
Great menu. Consistent. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced. Have been a customer for more than 10 years and yet to be disappointed. The best dimmies and chicken meat rolls this side of South Melbourne
Walk in the door and you've walked into the early 70's. Decor is enchantingly old but who cares the food is great and reasonably priced. Dimmies are renowned, deservedly so.
A visit to Tai Wah is like stepping back into your youth. This is old fashioned Aussie Chinese food that hasn’t changed in 40 years. The decor and the prices also haven’t changed much either and being able to get soups for around $4.00 and mains between $9-$12.00 is amazing... They still have Australian food listed at the back of the menu - I felt like a child again!
We ordered special fried rice and special chop suey and it was delicious. I often think we have gone too far with some foods, making them way too complex and fancy. Sometimes you just need some saggy daggy Chinese food and I am thrilled to still be able to find it here at Tai Wah. The big draw card for us however, is the dim sims. They are magnificent dense balls of slightly sweet beef wrapped in wonton skins and are fabulous. Judging by the number of locals calling in for a half dozen or so for lunch, these are their biggest sellers. We also buy a couple dozen for the freezer. Staff are so very friendly as well... Do yourself a favour and check out this “frozen in time” restaurant... Highly recommended... 😋
Great for takeaway ! We live nearby and often buy dinner there. Very generous Special Fried Rice with big chunks of pork, prawn and chicken in it. Juicy not dried out Sesame Prawns. They helped us get through so many lockdowns, on a Saturday night !
Small place but the food is delicious and the staff are wonderful. Definitely going back again. Don't let the front and decore fool you.
