Review The Roti Man - Middle Park

Sabin Poudel
Good food...seriously understaffed! Had to clean the table with tissues ourselves as nobody had cleaned it..it was full house with just 2 ladies running everywhere...had to follow up for the mango Lassi that was included, turns out we had to take it from the fridge ourselves, how would someone visiting for the first time know that ! Food is really nice but the lack of adequate staff is visible and appalling.
Sayed “Mister Mudhaffar” Mudhaffar
Great vegetarian place to eat on a budget. Decent meal with great flavour. All you can eat menu for $7.50. Recommended place to eat for students and budget travellers
Patrik Giles
$7.50 all you can eat vegetarian thaali meal - say no more. Lovely people and family run. Support this place!!!
Jacob Loveday
$7.50 for an "all you can eat" vegan curry, what more could you want? As a budget solo traveller I love this place personally, I know that some people might not think the quality of the food is that great but I say that you get what you pay for. Besides the food itself, the service here is always super fast and the staff are usually very friendly. Highly recommend.

Great value for money. Clearly marked special diet options. It is a vegetarian place.

Om Vegetarian, you are the best Indian shop in Melbourne. You are the one and only. You are unbeatable. I'm always very satisfied the amount/portion size you serve. Well done. In the whole Australia, you are the best Indian restaurant. I just ordered few minutes earlier today And again you did an amazing job as usual.
Pulkit Bhalla
What could you even get for $8 in the city? Taste is average though 7/10.
Andrew Tran
Om vegetarian is a solid indian vegetarian joint. I got the combo curry platter which came with a savoury pastry, three different curries and a drink. If I had to give some criticism it would be that the curries were a bit lacking in seasoning. Apart from that it's near impossible to beat the value you're getting here. 4/5

First stay in Melbourne. Had a very busy day and this place was relaxing, great food and top service. Friendly interactive staff.

After a failed attempt at Menulog, we decided to come and dine in. It was a fantastic experience for the whole family, great food & lovely warm service. Love the new app, will definitely be using it in the future.

Came here as we had a craving for Indian food. We had a quick look on the menu beforehand and found the prices to be reasonable so it came as a bit of shock that when we arrived the prices on the menu was approximately 25% more.
We decided to still give it a try and even though the service was friendly the food was extremely average and definitely not worth going again and pay such a premium.
The samosas were over fried , the shish kebab was very dry and the masala was too buttery. The breads however were quite nice.
Hello. Imnikki
3.5

Cold winter nights call for a hearty and warming curry and the first thing that came to mind was Indian curries. With so many Indian restaurants around, I relied on a friend's recommendation and decided to check out The Roti Man.

It goes without saying that there are two things that I always order at an Indian restaurant - carbs and curries. This time we went for 2 kinds of carbs; a garlic and cheese naan and a butter paratha. The naan was incredibly cheesy and garlicky, soft and chewy, but a tad thick. Flaky and soft was the paratha, but not buttery enough though.

Both the naan and the paratha were perfect for scooping up the delicious butter chicken and lamb rogan josh. The curries were so flavourful, with beautiful spices that jump out at you. The chicken and the lamb were cooked to tender perfection too.

The smoked eggplant was a surprise hit. Usually veggies are cooked to mush with curries but this one was still slightly firm. The sauce was also wonderfully piquant and moreish, with small chunks of onions that add extra depth of flavour.

We also tried the goat biryani, and while this was a bit too moist for my liking, I couldn't fault the flavours. Another dish big on spices and bold taste. Generous chunks of goat meat to top it all off.

I have never tried a carrot halva, and was pleasantly surprised with it. It tasted like pulverised carrot cake and while slightly on the sweeter side, it was delicious eaten in small quantity.

Service was very attentive and friendly. A bit on the expensive side, especially the mango lassi but a good option for Indian in the area.
Mb
Really nice and engaging staff, although the food is subpar, leaving you feeling underwhelmed and frankly slightly annoyed for the money spent for essentially overcooked meet in reheated curries.
Split The Bill
We regularly go here for to satisfy our cravings for good quality Indian food. We had the madras beef and sizzling chicken. Plus saffron rice and garlic naan bread. Staff are lovely.
Sharrelle
Lovely place with great service. wine and spirits not overly priced.

Great samosas...would order again. Nan ok but not fluffy..they cut up into little triangles..nan should be served whole for us to rip apart...for our main i ordered the fish korma ...absolutely lovely fish..tender rockling..sauce was bland though...no depth of flavour....my husband ordered butter chicken ... great you can pick breast or thigh...great quality chicken but again sauce bland. not sure if it was chef on the night but no depth of flavour...tasted like nothing....i want to come back as quality great but a little more flavour is needed.....
Marcus
Deserves a 4.0 at least. Great Indian food, high quality, extremely tasty and really authentic. The food is great both in the restaurant and via home delivery (menulog).
Steve Smith
The Roti Man has become a regular place foe us when we visit Melbourne. The staff’s attention to service is refreshing. It is not too much to ask to keep you glass filled with water. The engage in friendly conversation but do not overstay their welcome at the table. When it comes to the food I struggle to find the words. This place is excellent, the food is better than any other Indian place I have had before. Tonight I had okra, you need tomtry this, it is just beyond words. What I did enjoy was thet medium heat was medium, not very hot passed as medium.

Do yourself a favour, visit the The Roti Man!
Good Food Good Mood
Beautiful atmosphere primarily driven by the brightly coloured suspended ceiling with gorgeous pendant lights. I went for the usual garlic naan and butter chicken pairing which never fails to delight the tastebuds. This wasn't my favourite curry ever but I definitely enjoyed the meal and the magical interior made the night feel special and memorable
Braydon M Davies
Best Indian food I have eaten in Melbourne. I eat a lot of Indian food and have tried many dishes at many different places. The Roti Man is definitely the best I have eaten in Melbourne
Georgia
Quality Indian food, every single time. We always get take away and the curries are always amazing, full of flavour with meat of excellent quality. Garlic naan always a delicious accompaniment.
Cazz
We had a very pleasant experience at The Roti Man.

The decor was magical (like we were somewhere in India) especially the pendants. Staff were attentive & lovely to us & other patrons. Food was tasty (& we thought the best Indian in Melbourne, we have tasted so far). Roti's were absolutely mouth watering. Nice wine choices available.

A positive experience including an affordable price tag. (Sorry, enjoying the experience, so forgot to take photos).
Meatballs And Beef Cheeks
My friends love The Roti Man. It is their local Indian and they highly recommend it. Unfortunately, my takeaway experience wasn't as positive.

We ordered Palak Paneer, Lamb Moghul, Smoked Spiced Eggplant, saffron rice, plain naan, garlic naan and vegetable samosas.

I primarily dined on the Palak Paneer, which was very wet and lacked flavour. It wasn't just mild, it was very bland.

The flavour of the Lamb Moghul was nice, but there were cloves in the dish and biting into one was quite unpleasant.

The saffron rice was bland and the naan was burnt.

Fortunately, the vegetable samosas were very nice.
Dianne
Roti man is a cosy restaurant, with positively lively decor. Friendly waiters and restaurant manager made sure we had an enjoyable night....and sure enough, dinner was delicious. Looking forward to coming back here!
Harold Fleishman
The food is always decent when I dine in, but when I order delivery it is hit and miss. Alas during my most recent experience my beef vindaloo was mostly fat and gristle and to my tastes inedible.

The Roti Man is a stalwart in Middle Park. It is a large Indian restaurant that has been there for many years. There are all the standard Indian offerings, as well as a few left field options like vegetable chettinadu or okra curry. We went as a big group so ordered lots of different curries to share. Everything was very tasty, but our favourite was definitely the eggplant curry, it was delicious! The staff are very friendly and accommodating, including catering for a 16 month old baby, and they made sure we had a fabulous night!
Austar3411
Had a takeaway which was excellent. Great flavours across a range of dishes. Couldn't fault it really, although there was a little too much sauce and too little meat in the dhansak.
Andrew Turner
We'd been told our booked table had been moved to make room for a large group before we arrived at The Roti Man. As it turned out the entire front room was filled by the event. We were in a smaller back section which featured similar decoration with brightly coloured material hanging billowing below the roof and matching colours on the walls.
Adriandrury
The food is great and the staff are friendly and funny, but the service time is just B-A_D... Don't like putting down one of my faves, but it's every time i order to pick up, takes double the time they say and then there's nothing to make up for it all... Discount, freebies, at least try to compensate for my time - I've just paid for yours.
Nick Coughlin
Order was said to arrive at 8:32 pm but arrived at 9:07 pm. The garlic naan pictured was plain; neither butter nor garlic. However, the quality of the mains was very good, albeit tepid.
Carissa
The best Indian that I've had in Melbourne! Since moving to Melbourne several years ago I have been searching for some great Indian food and have finally found that at Roti Man. Service was great, the restaurant isn't terribly fancy but the food more than makes up for it. It's not too expensive and there's an option for take away also.
Shimona
The eggplant dish is great. Sadly though, was extremely disappointed with the palak paneer. Too watery and lacking flavour. Garlic naan is always a hit a butter chicken delicious. Overall a little on the pricey side.
Jane Wong
The roti man or bread vendor is quite a common sight in Penang. They are usually on their rounds in the mornings and from tea time (about 4pm), plying their stock-in-trade in a road contraption that resembles a hybrid between a motorcycle and a 'meat safe
David_phill4
Great food, great people!. Went On Saturday night and restaurant was full. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. There was a very rude/selfish group with loads of kids making tonnes of noise and no supervision. The staff were very apologetic but did all they could. Food was sensational and we will definitely be going back. Thanks
Cam Limonata
Rudest people you will ever come across. Called the restaurant to speak with the owner and got hung up on. Called back bc i thought it was a mistake and hung up in my ear again. Do not deal with these ppl they are horrible.
Rachael_bully
Excellent night. I recently organised a birthday meal at The Roti Man for my twin and I. The food was amazing and was excellent value for money. They even organised a dessert with sparklers and made our night that bit more special. Lovely staff who were under the pump because of the Grand prix crowd, but it did not show in their service :)
Jkdc
Great butter chicken. Excellent butter chicken. Good service.
Fatboo
there's a special touch to each of their curries, the flavour of the spices come out from hiding.
Fo
Decadent Indian food.. Beautiful decor, fantastic food and wonderful service!!!
If you are looking for flavourful Indian food definitely try the Roti man!!!
Quarter Of A Pounder
Not bad food, good service. I searched here from Urban spoon and was craving for some good Indian food.
I always decide on the food by trying the most common dish in any restaurant.
So I ordered the Goat biryani which is common in most Indian restaurants and it is important to cook it real hot.
Also tried the eggplant curry which was average..

Any ways the result is possibly one of the rare above average biryani I have tried in Melbourne ( yet to find the best)
the service was good and accommodating.

overall I will be going here once in a while when I feel like some Indian.
Msalhan
Arrogant. I organised a reception there i went through the details with the owner who said 'no problem no problem' when we got there they totally went against everything we asked for and rearranged everything...for such a special occasion it was an absolute disaster, food came late and was totally disorganized...arrogant rude !! you suck Roti Man
Chemuk
Had many a good take-away from Roti Man.
Mikkiblueyes
Mikki and Andrew. My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant quite by accident and were so pleased that we did. We arrived rather late in the evening, but were nonetheless warmly welcomed and shown to a table. Our meals were amazing - so tasty and flavoursome, possibly the best butter chicken we had tasted yet! It was definitely a lovely evening, particularly as it was also the celebration of my birthday! Well done to all staff at The Roti Man and give your chef a big pay rise!!
Vivyan Higgins
Best Indian restauarant In Melbourne and Ireland!!!. This restaurant is absolutely 5 star!!! The food is quality , the staff are friendly and two years in the food and service just gets better and better! Thank you to Sunny and all the staff from Viv!!
Ricky
I've been going to the Roti Man, in quaint Middle Park for the past 9 years, it's always been a favorite of ours. The last few months they have revamped it, and I love it! The food and staff is still brilliant, but the surroundings are so funky and Bollywood. Love the music and the aromas of the restaurant. We love sitting in the courtyard in the rear, and the captain, Sunny is REAL character lol
They also deliver, we live in Port Melbourne, so twice a week we have to have our Roti Man.
Best Indian in Melbourne by far
Facebook User
Wow!!! Best Indian Resturant in Melbourne. Tried this Indian place I heard about on Broadsheet last night in Middle Park. Fantastic food, the flavours were so varied, nice and spicy, & my wife had it mild. The wine list was extensive also. What I liked most was the vibrancy!!!! Bollywood music, friendly & extroverted staff....just fantastic. Soooo well priced too. Highly recommend if you want the fully Indian experience, and its in an ultra classy neighbourhood in Middle Park
Greg A
Friendly staff, meals were very prompt and tasted great!

Amazing food and service with a smile!! Our favourite Indian in Melbourne..,check out the sizzling calamari
Stevo112

Steve
Excellent service and elegant out door settings with great ambiance to follow. Highly recommend to try Roti Man as our first experience will defenitly not be out last.
Sweet Secrets
Delicious. No advanced booking but a table was made available in the courtyard which was really comfortable.
The service was welcoming and spot on, food was delicious, really couldn't fault anything.
A great meal served by friendly staff, shall revisit for sure.
Michael Bobson
Liked it. Had mango tiger prawns was filling and delicious.
Waiter was attentive and good with orders and reccomendations

Delicious food and fabulous table service! Best Indian in Melbourne! Lovely relaxed atmosphere! Recommend to anyone visiting or living in Melbourne!

Poor Takeaway. Didn't like the curries we ordered one Sunday evening. Tasted as though they were the leftovers from the previous evening. Vindaloo should kick arse not get its arse kicked and the beef was sinewy and salty. Other curries were the same. Not enough meat, too much bloody sauce. Rice was very dry and tired. A real disappointment first off. Will give the place another go to see if the place comes up to par - but not on a Sunday!
SJ
The best Indian Restaurant in Melbourne. Have been patronising this restaurant for the past 7 years and the food is very consistent and delicious. Very busy on the weekends but its worth the wait.
Nat_spratt
Great Curry House. As an English person in Australia, its very hard to find a good curry house, but The Roti Man has certainly exceeded expectations. We called here, at the recommendation of a fellow Pom, and were not disappointed. We only had takeaway, but the service and food was good, quick and well priced. Next time we will definitely have a sit down meal.
Roco
The food was delicious ! I.... The food was delicious !
It's BYO which is always a plus !
Service is fine . It's a really nice place for a cheap and easy meal !
Enjoyed it !
Eyeofthetiger
WOW WOW WOW. This Indian restaurant is the BEST in Melbourne! We ate here about 3 months ago and found the food to be amazing. A group of us went again on the weekend, and I have to say the food & the staff were just fab!
I can't speak highly enough of this place! My husband has never been a fan of Indian food but now he loves it! Come down to Middle Park eveyone, it is worth it!!!!!
Daniel Peacock
Haven't eaten in. Haven't dined in before so I'm not going to rate it, but I'd give the takeaway a 7/10. Pretty good :)
Ahelmil
Too noisy. Sadly there was a teenage girls party on the evening we visited, hard to say it improved our visit (some form of noise reduction must have been available, screens). We went for pre-theatre and had to remind the waiter 3 times we were on a tight schedule. The apricot chicken was excellent, the baby goat tender but the fact that we ordered saffron rice and received bolded, because the cool room had leaked, did not instil confidence. Surely you up-sell in this instance?
JM84
Middle Parks Finest. The boys at The Roti Man know what they are doing. In an area dearth of quality, they produce great food in a friendly environment.

The butter chicken and lamb korma, my Indian measuring sticks, are on point. The only poor dish I've had there in half a dozen visits was a calamari special. If you stick with the mainstays you cant go wrong.

Also load up on Roti. Obviously they know how to kick a goal there.

My only other criticism is it's a little pricey for medium size servings, but what isn't expensive these days.
Bensogreen
Nice food. Myself and 4 friends ate here a few days ago, i wasnt over impressed with the service but the food was yum and i think i will be back to try the experience again! Overall i wasnt to impressed.
Andy
Can't get enough!. My local curry and I can't get enough. Great taste, friendly service! If you like it hot, ask for the chilli pakora's to get you started. If not stick to the butter chicken and enjoy the rich taste.
ND
Worst experience at this place last night. Very sub standard Indian food & service with prices of a 5 star with 25$ for main curry, 4.5$ corkage per person..very disappointed with both taste and quantity of food for what we paid for. Never visiting this place again..horrible experience!
Healthy2Petite
Their dishes are tasty, just a bit too pricy.. should try the baby goat dish. Its their signature. The goat cooked well and rich of flavors
CG
Horrible food. Took so long and the chicken was extremely dry. Seemed like the naan bread was from a packet and had been heated up. The curry had little flavor and 0 spice. Never again!!!
Jawad
Never again. We ordered food at 6.40pm (main only) and served at 7.35pm. The staff did not even bothered coming up and telling us what is causing the delay. It seemed like we were invisible. There was this waitress who was constantly giggling and joking around with the manager.
After getting the food after 55 minutes, we immediately ordered more bread as we knew what we ordered was not enough, in 7 minutes we ran out of our bread and had to wait 10 more minutes for the bread we ordered (17 minutes in total). Staff serving the food appeared so angry, no smile nothing, they literally act like a robot when plating up. The manager also did not come to ask if everything was fine, even when all 6 of us were looking around while waiting for our food and later our bread.
When we paid the bill, the guy at the counter did not even say did you enjoy the meal etc as I am sure he saw us waiting for our food and when we were waiting for our bread, so maybe he knew we were not happy.
In short, not a good experience and never going there again.
Meganw
Best Indian in Australia!!!!. Best Indian I have ever had. I eat here once a week. Great service and great people. Love this place. I would never eat indian food anywhere else. Shyam is the best manager/owner of any restaurant.
Yummymummy
Happy with take away. Take away is tasty.
Haven't eaten in before.
Angela Lewis
Wwwooowwww this Indian food Is yyuuummmyyyyy
Matt
Salty, meat not very tender, $24 for a basic curry. Avoid.
Almond
Amazing!
Grace Effect
Disappointing. Ate there on a Sunday night only had three tables with people but the service was so slow and staff didn't give a care in the world. Had our mains and waited 30 minutes, no joke for the steamed rice to come and we had to ask 3 times. To top it up the the mains rojan josh and butter chicken were so bland. Worst Indian ever. My advice don't go there.
Npc13
We've dined in and taken away a few times from the roti man and have found it to be inconsistent. Generally the food is good - and I have tried and tested lots of Indian restaurants - but the let down is the staff. The owner/manager is very good helpful but the others let him down.
Andy Mack
Let down. Hate writing reviews like this but we have had an extremely disappointing evening. The staff were rude, slow in taking orders and completely disinterested . Mains were bland ( despite the menu describing many dishes as "very flavourful" ) The paratha were uncooked and were sent back - we were charged for the replacement only. Overall the meal was uninspiring and we cook better curries at home - there are thousands of amazing restaurants in Melbourne, don't waste a night coming here. $65 for two for 2 mains, 2 paratha, rice and 2 beers
Jezzabelle
Fabulous Indian. Amazing service. Loved it!!
Bella
Favourite restaurant in middle park! Friendly service and great foot
Sofia Godinho
Its our local in middle park. We
Love the consistently great food, and friendly staff. Definitely our choice when we want a good, quick meal out!
Lilia Reis
It was the wrost and most expensive Indian I've ever had me and my boyfriend ordered the butter chicken and it was horribly tasteless, watered down to the point where all I could taste on my plate was rice, they ither hate butter chicken and wanted to ruin the dish or they have to respect for they'r food over all. butter chicken alone was $21.90. We let them know that it was too watered down and they did nothing about it but smirk at us. Absolutely awful!!!!
Sandra
Unimpressed. The ambiance is nice if you don't mind being unable to determine what you're putting on your plate because the lighting is so dim. Is that a carrot? No, it's chicken. We selected two mains which due to the lighting looked the same, but what was worse was that it tasted the same. One of our mains had two peppers marked on the menu to indicate its spiciness, yet it didn't even warrant one pepper.
What confused me the most was that since we were the only diners there at the time, why was the server so distracted when taking our order and seemed to be in such a hurry? I wanted to ask "Excuse me, are we bothering you?"
We won't be back.
Dinnerate
Great Service and Great Food. Well done!
The food was fresh! Tasty and very well priced
Service was good
Atmosphere very comfortable and romantic.
Excellent - thank you.
Tax Man
Tasty!. Mmm, tasty food. Service bit slow but worth the wait.
Mangolassi88
The Roti Man. They totally stuffed up my wedding reception, their blase attitude, bad service and total disregard for what we previously discussed ...ill never go there again..think twice before making a group booking. Our guests were appaulled.
Poi Master
Delicious food, erratic service. We loved all of our food, including the surprisingly good roti desserts.

The service was a bit bizarre: the food was brought in only one plate at a time, and most of the waiters had either bored or confused expressions on their faces.
Plugger
Delicious food and wonderful service. Super friendly staff, don't bother with any other Indian as these guys kick some serious goals. Keep up the good work.
Nerina
I love indian food!. I really like this place! the dhal is amazing and the samosas are very yummy!! once i had some fish and it was good too. The staff is really friendly!
Foodie
Love the Beef Bhuna & Mango Lassi

Don't Go Delivery!!. I've picked up from the Roti Man previously, and have been happy with the food. Tonight though we ventured into the home delivery territory. Never again!
First we logged the order on their website, and got a call 15 mins later to say that the online provider couldn't get through to confirm it.
No worries, we rang direct, and were told that they had our order, and it was about to leave.
An hour later we were seriously hungry, so rang them again. Yep, no worries, it's 10 minutes away.
30 minutes later, and they won't answer the phone.

WTF??? Where is my food? Two hours for home delivery??? NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!!
Shireen Prasad
Tasty food- the chicken 65 was yum. Could eat a whole plate myself. A bit pricey though.
Roger Kaputnik
Pretty good solid Indian. We had two Korma curries, chicken and beef. Pretty good, nice sauce and decent servings. The waiter even advised us to stick to the small rice and he was right. Can take a while to get the food but that is okay if it is well cooked which this was. All their breads are fantastic! Wine was so so, service pretty good. Note they have outside dining front and back so you might want to try that when you book.
Rachel Sumner
Tasty curries with good service but a bit pricey.
Mitsy
Disappointing. My boyfriend and I have dined at the Roti Man a few times over the last 2 years and were always impressed at the flavorsome dishes and excellent service. However, we were very disappointed last night as the entree (vegie samosa and sauces) and curries (goat curry and chicken tikka masala) were quite bland and lacking in flavor, which made paying the higher price uncomfortable. I'm thinking maybe the management has changed here, or the cooks have changed?
Kristy
We have been there couple of time, n each time, we enjoy our meal...was so good n yummy!
Jac.H
Brilliant aloo gobi!

I went to the Roti Man last night for dinner with my partner. Been there before from a recommendation loved it, though last night had reservations for 07:30 none of our food arrived till 08:40 pm, food was great when it did arrive, though due to a massive group next to us I could barely hear myself ( when ur having a romantic dinner isn't fun) my partner order a drink halfway through our meal and 30 min later yet staff kept giving other people there drinks who ordered after us. Good restaurant , i'd go back but i'd check the bill twice and ask for a table away from the big groups.
Bob Smith
The place was busy on a saturday night which is always a good sign when you first walk in. I like my food and coming from the UK l like my curries so I was keen to try the place. We had the lamb samosa and to start and that was very good: pastry was thin and spicy and the lamb filing had some nice flavours. For mains we had butter chicken and lamb madras. Good sized portions and both were tasty. The nan bread was really good, nice and soft a and fluffy. All in all its certainly one of the best indian restaurants on melbourne. Only other comparable one I can think of is Bombay by night on north road.
Genevieve
Absolutely delicious, best Indian cuisine in Melbourne!!. Truly delicious, favoursome, quality Indian cuisine and dining experience. You can really taste the ground spices in each dish. The Sali Boti lamb curry with apricots, topped with lightly fried shredded potato, was an absolute taste sensation! I savoured every mouthful, with a slight resemblance to that famous When Harry Met Sally scene.

I loved the coloured saffron rice and the presentation of the dishes in Kadai bowls (like a rose gold bowl). Adds a majestic feeling. The decor is quite large, warm and inviting, with lots of colours. Most importantly, the owners are so friendly - they seem to know everyone who walks in, and there are always people waving at them through the window.

I truly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants a quality Indian cuisine experience!
Gregg
Good uk style curry. Stumbled into it by accident as was visiting a friend while over from Perth.Have eaten a lot of curries but since moving to oz from the uk i have been very disappointed with ozy curries so far.The chicken vindaloo here was very good as was the lamb cutlet starter.Whole experience was very good owner / manager was very helpful with dish choices as were the rest of the staff.Place was clean and i would make a special trip out that way next time I go to Melbourne.
Princelysum
Good food, good atmosphere, good value: 3 mains, pilau and 2 naan were more than the 3 of us could manage. Service was the highlight.
Expert Food Critic
Not authentic at all. I took my gf here because we were refered there by someone we know. It had a pleasant atmosphere until we received our food. All the food was sent on cold plates and their was no spice or seasoning at all!!! And my stomach did not feel well at all by the time I got home. Even though I know how to use authentic Indian spices at home being Indian. I think the food would have better if they had used normal pataks from the supermarket. The roti and garlic nann certainly had to have come out of a packet!!!!
Ami3
Sensational Food!. The Roti Man in middle park is the best 'British Style' curry house you'll find in Melbourne. Having lived in the UK for a long time, and being very disappointed in what Melbourne has to offer curry wise, I was delighted to try out The Roti Man after friends suggested and praised the food.

My 8 year old daughter is a real curry queen and she says its the best she's had in Australia too.
Trevor Lewis
Just back from Penang where I fell in love with their original restaurant on Ferringi Beach. The owners told us about their Melbourne place so looking forward to going asap.

A real shame. Let me just start and say we were really looking forward to eating here.

The food was fine. Our starters were great (tandoori chicken, samosas), the mains were ok, nothing amazing but tasty enough, other than the rotis which were very thin and dry.

The service however was non-existent! The waiters were friendly / polite enough when we dealt with them but they were nowhere to be seen when we needed them.

- We had to ask twice for a second beer for my friend
- Our starters took ages to came (25-30 mins)
- Our mains were a further 40 minutes from the point our starters arrived!

We were getting pretty annoyed by this point. Our order wasn't overly complex - 2 meat curries, 1 vegetable curry, saffron rice, naan and roti breads. We asked where our mains were and were told that our mains were 5 minutes away and that the problem was that the kitchen was too busy (even though the place was half full - this just smells like an excuse to me!). Other people who arrived after us had finished their meals by the time our mains arrived.

They did knock a bit off the bill but it still came to $130 for 3 of us (3 starters, 2 meat mains, 1 veg main, large rice, 1 naan bread, 2 roti breads, 1 bottle of wine and 2 beers) - it's a far cry from the very reasonably priced AND delicious curry I am used to (coming from the UK).

I really wanted to like this place, have been past enough times and was looking forward to the visit, but they really need to sort out the service, and get meals out promptly, it's just not good enough.

With so many other restaurants to try in Melbourne we won't be going back, based on this experience.

Good quality food, great value. This restaurant provided an excellent meal at a reasonnable price.
The butter chicken was made of breast pieces, visibly marinated for a long time (colour had gone deep inside the meat) and barbecued perfectly. The chicken korma was made of thigh meat stewed long enough to fall apart. Both were perfect, with serving sizes large (~$21 each).
The roti bread was also outstanding, and so was the mango lassi made freshly on our request.
The only disappointment was the safron rice! Dry and in clumps, it must have been coming from an earlier batch. It did not really matter as the roti bread was so good and so big we had no problem mopping the sauces.
2 chicken to share + rice + 3 roti + 3 lassi = too much food for 3 people, at an overall cost of $65. Great value.

Not good for take away. We felt like some Indian food on the weekend, so ordered some take-away from Roti Man. We were going to try Bengal Tiger but it is in a difficult location for parking, so thought we'd give Roti Man a try instead. Big mistake.

We called at 5.55pm, just before they opened and they took our order (two mains, rice and bread) and said it would be ready in 25 minutes. I turned up just a little after 6.15pm and the first thing they asked me to do was pay (now I know why). At that stage there were 4 people in the restaurant.

I then waited and waited. Several others came in to order take away in the meantime. At about 6.30pm some takeaway came out - but for someone who had ordered while I was there and waiting. I kept waiting. At about 6.40pm one of the staff asked my name, then disappeared into the kitchen. At 6.50pm someone came out with another takeaway order but it wasn't my name. They then went back into the kitchen, then returned with the same order and called out my name. Hurray!

I wouldn't bother writing this if the food had been nice, but it wasn't. It was luke warm and the meat in both dishes was dried out, with the flavour coming from the sauce that had obviously only just been poured over it.

We are locals but wouldn't go back there again - I'd rather search for 15mins for a parking spot near the Bengal Tiger.
