Review Katsu Japanese Restaurant - Midland

Cynthia Dewi Sandjaja
Our family's favorite restaurant! Salmon fried rice taste fantastic. Their chicken kaarage is one of the best in town. Salmon sashimi always serve fresh and squid tentacles is super delicious. Very friendly staff and price doesnt hurt your pocket. They provide free tea. Spacious and clean place too. Must go and try!

I tried to call 15 times in a row with a 15 minutes time frame, but no one answered the phone. I know it’s a busy time but someone could have picked up the phone at least. I have been in the restaurant at times waiting for an order and have witnessed the girl behind the counter ignoring the phone calls while stacking containers. I will not be going there again. The customer service has gone down in the last 6 months. I have been a regular customer almost every week which will end now

Katsu - Midland Another nice and simple lunch here, that doesn’t break the bank account. It’s an easy option for my wife and I whenever we’re in the neighbourhood and it’s anywhere near lunchtime. Lots of nice choices from the menu, and really reasonable prices, free cups of barley tea etc. Great value for money, and consistently good!

I always order the Salmon fried rice..... I highly recommend trying this dish.....and this place consistantly gives their best....

Quite disappointed, food was rather bland and not much variety of ingredients. Don't waste your money on Bento Box, any supermarket sushi stall better than this.

Inexpensive, filling and delicious! The best product here is hands down the Katsu Chicken as the batter is nice and crisp, even when submerged in their average curry, while surrounding the tender chicken. The sweetness + saltiness is just right. The Karaage was decent, but definitely choose the katsu chicken when visiting. Bonito based ramen is very clean with little oil. I really enjoyed the fried tempura pieces they give with the beef ramen as it was lightly battered which doesn't overpower the vegetable completely. I recommend the beef over chicken (trust me, that $1 will make a difference). The spicy coco ramen wasn't really spicy and their curry is very one dimensional unfortunately. Staff is exceptional, always smiling and polite.

Delicious food, nice serving sizes. Takoyaki Balls are amazing and fluffy, Chicken Katsudon was really nicely cooked great flavour, rice was a touch watery though. Apart from that excellent.

Good value for money My wife ordered the Katsu Chicken set and I ordered the Teriyaki Fish set. Both sets came with a basic salad and miso soup each. Each set was only 12. There was also free tea. As much as we wanted

Our go to place for lunch when down in Midland. Food always fresh & yummy with generous portions. Added bonus is the free tea.

We been buying here for a while, but as of late ( last 3 times) we noticed that staff have changed, takeaway meals are taking longer to get ready and food not the same. It is disappointing the change of Katsu

Always love coming here, great air con on hot days. Yummy food (I order the teriyaki or katsu chicken), have come here for a number of lunch dates and will continue to do so.

Decided to try out this place after umming and ahhing about it all night, had read a few reviews and it seemed quiet promising. All I can say is you get what you pay for, had ordered teryaki beef and a vegetable tempura. Portion size was ok, food was pretty average though, miso soup tasted like dirty dish water.
I think someone mentioned in a review it was better than from the food court, but give me sushi bento anytime over this.
Will probably be my first and last visit, like they say you never know if you never give it a go...... Well now I know.

Good option if going to midland gate, nice but not amazing.

Nice and quiet out of the main shops.

Chicken katsu was excellent. Udon noodle stir fry was ok.

At least you know it is made fresh as I could hear the wok going.

Better than foodhall rubbish at the shops
Was alot better than the other options at midland gate.

Would not have known it existed but for the reviews.

Always love coming here for the katsu curry. Personally it’s one of the best I have had. The service is always great, the staff are super friendly and get your food ready quickly.

We are locals and this is our go-to takeaway any night of the week!Food: Authentic Japanese flavours, always arrives hot and fresh. Good serving size and price for value.Service: Staff are always friendly and willing to help, and food always arrives quickly.Ambience: Too cold! The restaurant is a bit bare-bones and can be a bit of a chilly echo chamber - more attention to the appearance would be good. Suggested Dish: vegetable tempura, katsu and karaage chicken - either on their own or in a bento box. Always with the miso soup!

Very simple but nice food. Self-service. Ideal place for a quick lunch. The taste of food is just on the average level, but you wouldn't complain about it, as the size is quite good and price is no too bad. My friends liked the curry dishes, I'm ok with everything here.

Great Japanese, just the stuff I want and crave. Food always fresh and flavoursome.
Restaurant is low fuss and the prices are very reasonable
Would recommend the Katsu Don
David
The food here is very low quality and slightly overpriced for what you get.

One of the worst Japanese restaurants I've been to in Perth. Definitely won't be coming back.

Good, simple Japanese food with nice, authentic flavours. Went today for lunch and had the Chicken Miso Ramen and Vegetable Spring Rolls. Ramen was good - the miso broth was lovely and light. Liked the crisp chicken on top, but the dish was overpowered by the noodles. Would have liked to see some more mushrooms and veg. Spring Rolls were nice - crispy with a good filling. Left full and satisfied!

Very tasty, affordable, no thrills japanese food. We frequent this place every time we re in midland. Love the takoyaki, salt n pepper squid, katsu chicken, karage and spicy udon. Great value and friendly local service.
Louise
Cheap and delicious japanese! Staff are very friendly and polite. Their noodles and fried rice are my go to dish every time! Also very convenient as it can be ordered over the phone and ready to pick up pretty much straight away

LOVED this place so much. We had crispy squid, chicken katsu, spicy yaki udon, gyoza and takoyaki. Everything was perfect, especially the squid and the spicy yaki udon. The place was nice, staff were friendly! Definitely putting this place in my fave list

For the past 2 years, my partner and I have been living 2 block away from Katsu in Midland which is great because we can always order some beautiful, tasty and fresh food paying a fair price. We are regular customers, at least once a week we place an order. However, lately, we have noticed a significant decrease in the food quality what is a shame. This is not a review to criticize, it's only to ask you to think again about how you are running the business; sometimes it's better to increase in few dollars the prices but keep the quality and the customers. We don't want to lose our lovely local restaurant. :) (The rate used to be a 5)

SO GOOD!
I love eating here dine in or takeaway, quality is basically always the same. Favourite dish is the teriyaki tofu in the set meal, recently there hasn't been as much sauce as I would like but what is there is like liquid gold, SO GOOD. Usually with a side of takuyaki or vegetable tempura, love the garnish and sauce that comes with the takuyaki. Fair pricing and great food.
Sometimes its a little hard to get a hold of anyone to make an order over the phone but in store the service is always great.

LOVED my teriyaki chicken set menu....the size of the meal was just perfect for me. Definitley coming back for more! I wish that there could be self serve water available...as the glasses given to us were very small and it would save the girls from going back and forth.

I've been coming here since it opened. I'm relatively new to the sushi world and I got sick of the standard servo/takeaway sushi offered by places like noodle box etc.

Katsu is clean and fresh. Like their food. This round I ordered the katsu chicken maki with a side of ponzu sauce, because as I said, I'm fairly new to the sushi game. Next time I'll be slightly more adventurous.
Also grabbed the spring rolls.
I'm a big fan of Japanese cuisine and will be dining at katsu more often.

I was actually looking forward to eating here again for awhile, and having another review of this neighbourhood eatery.
The restaurant presents simply and clean once again.
The counter service was decent and patient with a smile.
The Tempura set was a real treat although I would have preferred panko crumbs rather than a light batter, which was still delicious. The Tempura sauce is a tad light and bland.
The Katsu was delicious and will be my staple.
I feel the rice portion is small and for the price should have been a bigger portion.
Again the presentation of meal set is poor, a tray like a Bento could have been used to enhance the appearance. But this is only my preference.
A good place to come to for a quick snack or a meal.

Great value , I eat here with my daughter whenever we go to the cinema, great tasting and simple menu , I have to get the pork Dumplings each time ..... Definitely beats anything else around the area for value .

One of midland's little gems!! A great spot outside of midland gate that has never disappointed! Staff are super polite and the simple decor is always well maintained and clean. Can't go past the chicken spicy coco ramen noodle soup, it is a must try along with the fried chicken wings. Totally would recommend!!

Have been eating here for 18 months now. Never had a bad meal once. Chicken Katsu is a must try. Good sizes portions of great food at a price thats hard to beat. Pays to phone ahead during the dinner time rush, but i havent had to wait longer than 10 minutes on a walk in.

BEST KATSU EVER!. Best Katsu Chicken I have ever tasted in my whole entire life. Try to look for it elsewhere and you wont find it. The sauce on top and the mayonnaise to accompany it is super tasty and the chicken is cooked well and tender unlike the soggy Katsu you'd get anywhere else. Also the Crispy Chicken Pieces on the menu are a must try! Salty, spicey and really damn good.

Great Value & Good Food. This is an unpretentious restaurant, serving delicious classic Japanese dishes. Ask for their old style chicken yakitori - it is scrumptious and remarkably inexpensive. There are no frills here; the focus is on dishing up consistent, tasty meals at prices that represent really great value. Highly recommended,

The best chicken teriyaki... Originally from Melbourne, I must say I have never tasted a chicken teriyaki dish as tasty as Katsu's..with its reasonable price, I will definitely come back again on my next trip to Perth..keep up the great work, guys..

2015 review 9/10. Normally eat at the restaurants next door to Katsu Japanese, but so thankful I decided to try something different.

Their Katsu Curry is the bets i have had EVER. tender yet crispy and the portions are amazing for the price.
Also tried their chill chicken, teriyaki beef & squid dish... all above 7/10...

Love this place, a new regular for me as could not fault.... also staff really nice!

Enjoyed my meal. Hubby and I always eat late on wkends and decided to check out this plc as e reviews were gd & it's open not like other places that close by 2/3. The food was vy vy satisfying. For $45 we had 2 meals and 3 sides. Was a filling tasty meal, wld recommend going for ur taste of Japanese food.
Rpetrick92
Impressed. Went here on the day that they opened with my mum and it was great! Really nice fresh food which didnt break the bank and the green tea that we were offered was also delicious! After reading all the other positive reviews ill definitely go back!

This place used to be great. I used to rate this as some of the most consistent, fairly priced Japanese around. Then they changed the menu and it all went downhill. Goodbye Katsu, I guess it was fun while it lasted, however the inevitable downward spiral of a successful business in this town overtook you.
Billychan33
Well, just happened to drive passed on duty,,, tried the Teriyaki Fish ,,,
Pretty gd!!!

We order our work lunches from here all the time. Awesome food. Everyone raves about the katsu chicken but to me the unagi is the best!!!

Stopped here for a late lunch today, when driving around trying to find a Japanese that was open. So glad we found it! We ordered the karaage set and teriyaki chicken set, and both were delicious and cheap. We don't live close by but next time we're in Midland we will definitely stop by again!

Love this place! Its rare to come across a japanese testaurant where the food is fresh and tasty! I always get katsu chicken sushi which is the best katsu sushi ive ever had! Theres a slight sweetness to it that makes it delish! I then get the teriyaki chicken bento box. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and a good serving of the sauce so youre not stuck with plain rice! Very nice staff also!
Even my 2 year old likes this place!
Great prices aswell! Not expensive at all!
Alisa Guillory
Not so much. I must say I can't review the food, I didn't want to eat it, I walked in and the place is pleasant enough, basic and clean looking. I ordered and paid for my food and then while waiting saw the state of the kitchen, they weren't busy so really there was no excuse. Food and crumbs on the floor, dirty walls and dirty stove, it put me off and I couldn't eat the food. Shame I had such high hopes after the other reviews,
Koolkat1956
Good Food, Great value. My favourite is the chicken udon noodle soup, at $10 it's hard to beat. Always freshly made (yes, you do have to wait a while but so what, have a cup of the free tea and sit back and relax!) The menu is big enough to give you a decent choice and it all looks good.
Don't go there if you are looking for a romantic venue, the decor is basic and the atmosphere is non existent, maybe a little music might help pass the time but do try if you want quality Japanese food at unbeatable prices!
Staff are always friendly and they keep the place nice and clean (which is more than I can say for some other Asian food outlets in Midland.)

About time!. Poor old Midland with its tired Chinese restaurants, or pubs serving over rated and over priced meals. Thankfully a place like Katsu is now serving healthy, delicious and inexpensive food. You do tend to wait a while for the food, but at least you know it is being cooked fresh. The staff are very sweet and the food is very tasty, and very reasonably priced too. My kids love coming here, and when a family of 4 can eat for $50, I love coming here too.
Mysy
Always tasty food. Reasonable price. Waiting time can sometimes be quite long which is a pity but food is good. Appreciate the complimentary chilli flakes and tea as well
Lishy Pants
What a Gem!. Well you don't go here for the atmosphere, but the food was spot on. all mains come with miso, salad and rice, teriaky chicken was really good, the sahimi was cold firm and fresh. Go for cheep really good Japanese.
Steve
Excellent value, excellent food. Sometimes the food takes a bit longer than I'd like but I'm never disappointed. They use good quality ingredients (especially the beef) and they prepare them right. One of my favourite places to eat.
Jade Fox
It's a shame I have to give this place a bad review. The food is really good but the food took way to long to come out and it wasn't even busy. Waited 30 minutes for two meals and dumplings which is a long time for simple Japanese cuisine.

Great food, free green tea :) highly recommended

Delicious. I am so grateful a tasty Japanese restaurant has opened in Midland. I have dined here a few times and it is always fresh, fast and delicious.

Excellent Japanese food. This is one of my favourite places to eat. The food is incredibly good and the prices are very affordable. My initial assumptions was that it would be a fast-food shopping mall experience complete with rudimentary teriyaki sauce smothered over everything. What you will find instead is fairly authentic and quality ingredients albeit partially ruined by a cold and sterile decor.

A true test of any Japanese eatery is the sashimi and Katsu does not disappoint - you get a generous servings of salmon, tuna and kingfish complete with rice, miso and a delectable carrot and daikon salad. The fish tastes and smells fresh and tastes great. All this for about $14.00!

Katsu has one of the best tempura vegetables I have ever eaten. Light, cripsly battered vegetables cooked precisely how it should. One way of testing this is to dip it in the sauce provided and it still comes out crisp. The salt & pepper chicken wings are another well prepared dish worth trying. I saw a number of people enjoying their ramen soup dishes which also looked great.

If they could just get the setting right - turn down the air conditioning, replace the cold white lights with warmer ones and maybe when it picks up business invest in better decor and furniture. I am worried that not enough people know or are going to Katsu and Midland region will lose a great eatery. Don't be put off by the food hall impression and give it a shot. The service is top notch as well.

Take away. I have had the Katsu curried chicken. the chicken was wonderful. I also had the Omu rice. Fantastic - I'll be going back to explore the menu.

Came here for the first time last night, the food was great, freshly cooked. I had the katsu chicken, it was so delicious, there's something about the sauce it is just not the same as other katsu sauce. My partner had the spicy coco udon with chicken, curry laksa with udon noodle it was so good, he polished the bowl clean. We also ordered side of chicken wings and takoyaki yummm!! Definitely coming back.

My new local.. To put it simply, Katsu is delicious, fresh Japanese food at an amazing price. The staff are friendly, portion sizes good and meals are tasty. The service is wonderful, restaurant is clean and food is served quickly.

For value, I recommend the Mix Tempura Udon or the Teriyaki Fish - you won't be disappointed! The sushi/ sashimi uses quality fish and is deliciously fresh every time.

If in Midland, you should try Katsu for a quickly served delectable and healthy meal.
Aimee
I had the katsu chicken meal there unfortunately the sauce just tasted like oil. Not nice at all. Looks like it's back to gin sushi I go.

Staff Can't Handle Busy!. I did have a positive up review for this restaurant. However, having been open long enough now to have a large customer base, its very busy during the lunch and dinner peak. Some staff excel in this environment, others melt down and make the experience unpleasant. Having placed our orders for lunch, we waited a very long time for the order to be ready, then they gave my wife a meat dish. She politely told them this was not correct, that she is vegetarian and had ordered the tofu. The staff had the nerve to tell her she was wrong and that she must have ordered the chicken dish...they were very rude about the whole thing. Vegetarians do not accidentally order meat dishes.

Having no time left in our lunch breaks to wait another 15+ minutes for a new order, she requested some vegetarian Sushi Rolls that were pre made. The staff refused to give her an equivalent value for what she had paid and refused to refund the money. We left extremely angry. I was appalled at the staffs conduct and that they tried to blame the customer for their stuff up...and then ripping us off for their mistake. Last straw.

Note to manager...people read bad reviews, people talk. You can't get away with this conduct for long. Don't drop the ball.

Won't be going back.

Best Japanese in the east! Its more casual eating compared to its neighbour but yummy and at $10 a bento box you are laughing! I tried the chicken udon soup as well...love!
