Review The Province - Mildura

Dined for dinner. I had the ricotta gnocchi with lamb ragu for my main & panna cotta for dessert. Both were well presented & delicious. Hubby had the pappardelle with Italian sausage & chocolate cake. He enjoyed both his meals also. Service friendly.

After a very lovely week in South Australia, Mildura was just a rest stop for my partner and I on our drive back up to Sydney. We dropped into our hotel and decided we will go out for dinner. After debating whether we want deep fried pub food.( which isn't bad) we came across The Province by Matt De Angelo. We rang up and got the last available booking. The restaurant is very lovely laid out. Nice ambient music playing. We were greeted as we walked through the door immediately with the most generous smiles. We were served by Matt, and it was great! Very professional but also human! Felt at home. We left there very satisfied as we have never had Italian food as lovely as that! By far the best little Italian restaurant in the Southern Hemisphere. Keep up the great work! We would definitely be up for an 11 hour drive from Sydney to eat there again.

The Province is an exceptional restaurant in the heart of Mildura. Wonderfully presented food, warm friendly staff - this is a great recipe for a fine restaurant. I would highly recommend.

Absolutely enjoyed our experience at this fine restaurant. I had the moreton bay bug spaghetti that had generous chunks of the bugs and my husband had the medium rare steak that melts in mouth. Service and cleanliness was great too.

I'm a tough but fair critic. Although I agree the food and service was excellent, there was a missing X factor. The price of the food deserves a little extra with the dining experience that I unfortunately did not receive. Nonetheless, in a town like Mildura, the Province is superb. 4/5

Amazing food, lovely service. Would definitely come again, even with the 11 hour drive from Sydney!

Delicious food and wine - the best I've tried in Mildura. Their pappardelle pasta with quail was amazing, we'll definitely be back for this again.

Stunning well presented and delicious food with excellent service and great wine list.
I had the slow cooked goat with barley. A superb take on risotto. My friend had a tasty seafood spaghetti marinara. We shared a fresh Italian salad with bread, olive oil and balsamic.
Great. We dined here last night , it was faultless . The food was fresh and tasty . Service was great . As for the previous reviewer Dylan quail is a small bird it has bones you have to sift through . If you don't like bones in poultry go and buy popcorn chicken from KFC .

Another warm welcome on my business trip. Turned up close to closing time and they were happy to serve me dinner. Once again I had the delicious gnocchi and some yummy Italian Sangiovese.
I don't really understand Dylanleayr's comments, particularly with the wine list and the table arrangements. The restaurant is small and intimate but you certainly don't get bumped by anyone! I feel that the wine list is adequate and so are the prices. To get a decent glass of red for $8.50 is great in my opinion.
See you next time

Disappointed.. Reading the relatively good reviews on here I assumed The Province would be a nice place to eat, and maybe on a regular basis; also considering it's labeled under the somewhat expensive group of restaurants, I assumed so much better.

Once arrived, and sat down at our table, uncomfortably close to the walking path of the staff and other patrons, which was odd considering there were tables in a less obtrusive place that were not filled that night; the waitress welcomed us and gave us the usual introduction of most restaurants with an assigned waitress/waiter. The important part about this is that she told us twice, that everything is "fresh" and "handmade", and looking at what was offered on the menu, we assumed it would be a lovely night.

Starting with the wine list, which has quite a large selection, it was disappointing to see selections of cheap wine you can and do find on a supermarket shelf marked up starting at the price of $40+ (one of the wines listed was actually on sale at the local supermarket for $11 a bottle, they sold it for $35, one of the cheapest, barely laughable); we tried two kinds of wine, the were rather generic. I'm not a wine connoisseur but I do primarily drink red wine, the staff knew nothing about the kinds of wine to drink with each meal, not if any wine on the menu was actually nice to drink; although the beer prices were reasonable.
But who drinks beer with Italian food?

I would suggest shrinking your wine menu down considerably and getting a staff member to learn about the wines for the patrons who don't like cheap supermarket wine with their expensive Italian meal.

For my entrée, I chose the quail, which was actually quite enjoyable, it was a reasonable size, and portion and presentation was great, although the quail did have a number of bones through it, enough to consciously realize and think, 'what the hell'. While I haven't eaten enough quail to know if leaving odd shaped and quite sharp bones in the quail when served, it was annoying to have to continue to sift through my mouth with my tounge as to not to ingest bones.

For the main, I ordered the 250g steak rare, which came out medium rare, this didn't help as since the steak was the only thing in the plate besides some brussel sprouts and a very unusual but nice, albeit plain sauce. The whole meal was boring and got tastless at times, it just became a chore to chew in the end really.

Finally dessert, we all had the same thing, a chocolate cake thing with caramel sauce.
This is where the "fresh" and "handmade" speech fell through.
The dessert was atrocious to say the least, especially for the price which it was sold at.
The icecream was certainly not hand made, and I think someone left the lid off of the container in the freezer as it had the obvious and unwelcoming taste of freezer burn, actually everything had tasted like it was in the freezer to long. The slice of chocolate/caramel cake was also clearly just taken out of the freezer and cut from a slab of it, which even if it was freshly made as advertised, it still would be subpar.

After dinner, we stayed and talked for a while, and while we did we were still made quite welcome, which was nice.

I know The Province is not a Stefano's, so they simply shouldn't act like one; they try and fail miserably, even to the point of putting your dish on your cloth napkin before you can out it across your lap, so it rest precariously until you move it; like?
Don't say your food is "fresh" and "everything handmade" when clearly it's neither, anyone with any kind of taste buds would know otherwise.

tldr;
Bad:
- Wine list basically a supermarket catalog, stupidly overpriced for terrible, cheap wine.
- The entrée was riddled with bones.
- The main was bland, boring and became a chore to chew in the end.
- Dessert was god awful, freezer burnt and not "fresh" or "handmade".
- Again the wine list. Terrible.
- A weird mix of facy restaurant service and regular restaurant service, makes for a weird experience.
- Food is certainly overpriced for the quality that is served.

Good:
- The entrée besides the bones, was rather enjoyable.
- The people I ate with.
- Didn't make us feel uncomfortable when we the last there.
- Waitress was polite.

The new STAR of Mildura. A fantastic dining experience! Fresh local and seasonal food prepared with passion and love by Matt De Angelo and his team; delicious and generous. Service warm and skilled. Lovely decor and a great wine list. We would highly recommend and can't wait to return.

Matt DeAngelo The new Mildura chef sensation. Mildura has a new restaurant that makes this city a special food attraction. Matt DeAngelo and his partner present outstanding Italian food that must not be missed, equal to any I have eaten elsewhere
Patricia Edgar

Dinner at The Province. We broke our journey from Adelaide to Canberra with a couple of days in Mildura.

We were advised to try The Province by a cafe owner just around the corner who told that we would really enjoy the place if we were looking for honest to goodness Italian food, and that's just what the place turned out to be.

My beef carpaccio was excellent, and the pappardelle quail in madeira sauce was right on the mark. Nothing ever beats freshly made pasta!

The floor staff were attentive without being pushy and when we asked for a bit of a break between entree and main - it was handled precisely as we asked.

The enthusiasm of the young couple who have taken on this venture is obviously contagious - all their staff have gotten the "bug"!

My only minor criticism is that they need to include a small selection of mid-priced reds on their wine list in the $50 - $70 range to fatten out the choices - but this really is a very minor criticism.

If you are staying overnight in Mildura and are looking for a great value for money option for dinner you won't be disappointed.

Up on holidays in mildura and saw The Province. This restaurant is amazing. The food is fresh and fantastic not to mention the friendly and welcoming staff. We were looked after the entire night, our meals came quick and the atmosphere was amazing. There were plenty of entree's, mains and desserts to choose from, all which were spendid. Would highly recommend this restaurant and I plan to go back as soon as I can :)

Absolutely amazing! The food was perfect and the portions were great! I didn't feel bloated after eating there but I was very full. Almost everything there is made fresh and you could taste it in the dishes. Amazing. Would definatly go back :)
