Review Dark Horse On The Brit - Mitcham

Decent coffee and food. Hash browns were a bit bland and over fried and mushrooms too oily bit overall was a good experience. All employees were masked up and following covid protocols.

Great food, coffee and service! I’ve been here a couple of times recently and it’s always consistent. I wanted a light snack so I had the simple fruit toast today. It looked a little lonely on a big plate and I would have preferred to have buttered it myself. However, it was was tasty and I loved that the plate was hot to keep the toast warm. Nice touch!

Lucky to have a quality Cafe in my local precinct. Coffee ☕ my love of life is superb and dining experience has been 👍 the people on here complaining about wait and staff need to look in the mirror and have some understanding of how hard it is to find and manage staff through this pandemic. You are the people on the add who get annoyed waiting for anything in your life. IF ITS quality then yeah the occasional wait is well worth it. This is the best Cafe in Mitcham and they are doing their 👌 support don't knock. It's tough out there dealing with the angry people!!

We love coming here. The menu is really nice. Often the seating is not comfortable though. Inside is cramped or the seating outside is plastic and hard. Nonetheless, the staff are lovely, the food is super yum and different with lots of options, the drinks are just the same! Highly recommend.

The cafe was understaffed, but considering that, I think they did well. Cafe was very busy, but the staff were helpful and polite. I come here for coffee occasionally, does take sometime to wait for take away coffee, but this morning I ate in. Breakfast was good, coffee was great, very happy all in all.

Very nice place in mitcham, will come back and try a different thing. By the way, as a customer please understand we are lack of workers, be patient is must
Sarah Williams
Awesome little spot in Mitcham, really tasty meals every single time. Would recommend coming in the early mornings as they aren’t too busy. And I would HIGHLY recommend the fresh apple juice!
Dan Morgan
Booked a table, still waited 15mins to be seated, another 45 just to order, and another 50 for food to arrive. We were given a glass of water for the table, but no glasses despite asking 3 times - they were all in the dishwasher, apparently. The food was stone cold by the time it arrived. The poor wait staff clearly weren't coping, and I saw several people complain and send food back just while we were there. The owner is utterly deluded if he thinks this is acceptable service.
Lucy Holmes
We love you guys! Always serve the yummiest food, and are the loveliest staff! It's a regular place for all the Lightfm staff!
Naomi Burke
Delicious coffee and great work lunch yesterday. I'm still dreaming about the bacon and capsicum soup, yum!!
Adam Callander
On the recommendation of friends who we stayed with in Melbourne for the weekend, we popped in for breakfast this morning, food was glorious and the service second to none. We will be back!
Kris Bromfield
Don't even think worth one star....no system for people waiting. We waited 10 mins for a table only to have another staff member give tables away who were waiting less time....thanks for ruining our Sunday morning. If you can't get the simple customer service part right then you shouldn't be open
Suzie Que
Lovely staff & coffee & meals are amazing I must say especially the coffee

An institution in Mitcham. Great food, friendly team and good vibes. If large groups going book ahead.

Excellent service! Always welcomed with a warm smile and the food is amazingly delicious!!

Our party of four all had the Wagyu burger and were blown away by the taste. It was juicy, and there was plenty of bacon. Nothing is too much trouble for owner Sam and crew. You want sourdough instead of a bun - no problem. You want chilli - you got it. Extra mayo - fine.

My go to place for coffee in Mitcham, food is either hit or miss and unfortunately this time was a miss. Ordered the lamb salad and gosh it was disappointing.<br/>Lamb was way overcooked, dry and bland with no seasoning at all. Potatoes were soggy, drowned by the also under seasoned dressing and piled with hummus that was plonked on top. Overpriced but coffee is still good though!

Slow service. Took 20 minutes to be served and 30 minutes to receive food (eggs?) wasn’t extremely busy either. Also not accomodating for changes on the menu which is fine but their prices are ridiculous for their serving sizes. <br/>

Dining ion a breakfast of bacon, eggs, haulomi, and iced latte was the way to start the day recently. I couldn’t believe the portion size and only just got through my meal. <br/>The menu is great because there is variety but you can also build your own breakfast which is what I did. Want to change it around a bit? No problems. Staff are more than happy to accommodate. <br/>Located in the mall in Mitcham amongst other cafes, this is a lovely place to eat and I’m told a lot of cyclists meet up here after their morning ride. <br/>Dogs are welcome and believe me there was 8 different dogs along the outer edges of the cafe. <br/>Staff were great and very helpful. <br/>Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. High chairs available. Dietaries catered for. Good parking. <br/>🥚🥩 d e b i ☕️🍴

This place has a nice outdoor atmosphere to hangout. We ordered the Big Breakfast and the Spanish that has chorizos. The dishes had an amazing presentation. I love it!

I was so excited to finally get here and try one of their dishes. So often I’ve been for a coffee in the morning but hadn’t tried their food yet....it was worth the wait! <br/>I decided on their breakfast bowl and it was absolutely delicious and so beautifully presented. <br/>The staff here are absolutely beautiful too. <br/>I think when you go somewhere on a Tuesday and it’s absolutely buzzing it says a lot! <br/>Will definitely be back 😃<br/>

My local and absolute favourite cafe! Friendly staff and great atmosphere! But since the recent change in menu, have removed my go-to feed.. eggs benny! Please bring back this classic, I have had a lot of eggs benny in my time and Dark Horse is by far the best I’ve had!! Bring back benny!!!!

Been here two times both times were average. Both times messed up orders and no apologies. To top it off the waiter thought it would be a good idea to start wiping the dust off the lamp shades whilst people were eating and the dust was falling onto coffee cups ready for us to sip on. This is a job that should be done after hours. Not appetising.
BevLovesFood
Comfortable & spacious cafe.. Good food & good coffee, love their French Toast. Muffin was very nice.. Only issue was the waiting time, waited almost an hour for our food. & we were there after 12pm so it wasnt that busy at the time either.
Carissa
Beautiful little place although hard to find, the food is magnificent!! I found this place a little pricey, but presentation was just outstanding! I would 10/10 recommend to a friend!

I've been coming here for years and they never disappoint. Plenty of variety with the menu, lovely staff and they make a fantastic cofee. Highly recommend!

Food: 3.5/5<br/>Coffee: 4.5/5<br/>Atmosphere:5/5<br/>Pet friendly:5/5<br/><br/>We live locally and this has always been our go-to for great coffee. Friendly staff members (especially Josh but he left in March) and pet friendly for sure. Great ambience when you sit under the huge tree out at the front. <br/><br/>Food wise, we think it’s a mix. We had really good waffles and breakfast burger here before. The bacon and egg Turkish roll was great but my dish, The Brit, left me a bit confused. The individual elements were tasty but I find the beetroot relish too sweet and doesn’t quite complement the other elements completely. I’d probably stick to the usual favs next time.

Two flies in my half finished coffee 😰😰😰 this has literally put me off coffee forever. Have been to dark horse many times but am scared to go back now.
Margaret Blaciewiziwiksi
This place is generally quite good, however on this occasion, we were deeply disappointed in the lack of service, we had to order our coffee twice & still no coffee's arrived! They definitely need to pick up their customer service. will not be returning, anytime soon.

Bad service. Disorganised, inattentive, disinterested and bad attitude! I have previously been there before and given the poor service and quality of food decided I would not go again, however today I thought I would get a couple of small Citroen tarts. As the girt rang the amount up, up popped $15.90! Then another$1 for each tart. Total $17.90. When I questioned the cost she said a extra $1. Surcharge was applied for the long weekend. Almost $9 each! I did not proceed and the girl couldn’t have cared less. Don’t was your money or time on this low end rip off cafe. Disgraceful.

Fresh off an unpleasant experience at another cafe, I wandered to this little gem and was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed eating here. We were greeted right away by the cheerful staff and was served by a waitress who was absolutely wonderful. I give the food 4/5- the breakfast salad deserves a special mention. I would love to come back again!

This gorgeous cafe is the best I’ve been to in the longest time! With an abundance of parking nearby, plentiful seating, and friendly staff, Dark Horse on the Brit is a cafe that is always my first recommendation! There are lots of tables (both inside and out), which turn over quickly, however the staff never hurry you along! So perfect for brunch dates! To top it off - the food is AMAZING and accomodate allergies very well! Cannot speak more highly of Dark Horse on the Brit!
Steve
After having my own hospitality business I couldn’t have been more impressed the food was perfect the service time was excellent considering the business was full the staff were excellent and held their own with the 2 very loud tables I highly recommend this place even just for a friendly coffee you won’t be disappointed well done to all I definitely be coming back here
DaRekinator
Well that was...disappointing. From the reviews and the presence of many patrons, you would think that this place is worthy of your hard earned dollars. It is not. For what we received, the meals were well overpriced, and the quality was something else. We had two dishes with smoked salmon. The mushy pink salmon that was on our plates had a very interesting taste. It certainly hasn’t been stored properly, or was well past it’s use by date. As for my “chilli scrambled eggs” I’m not too sure what to say. Scrambled eggs should be fluffy, with a bright yellow texture. These eggs were neither. What they did have was absolutely no flavour. Very disappointing. The coffee was nice, and the staff were fine.

My dining companion chose the 'Salami Panini', which was yummy with the spicy salami complementing the other elements. I ordered a latte made with Madamimadam Coffee...

this is a cute cafe, secluded from the main roads of mitcham. i ordered the egg white omelette and overall was very delicious. i chose the gluten free option and typically gluten free bread is not as tasty but this one was very nice. the omelette itself was very yummy but maybe needed a tiny but more cooking. overall was very delicious and would come again

Been here many times before but today’s meal was really disappointing. The calamari was over cooked, that some were just rubber inside. It was also really salty and had no nice flavour. I ate what I could as I was super hungry but then mentioned it when I was paying and all they said was sorry and they would let the chef know. Still had to pay the full price for extremely over cooked calamari. Won’t be returning for food anytime soon - too inconsistent.

First time today. Went for a quick brunch. Not bad brunch place. Service was prompt, food was average and nice modern venue. Nothing really stood out tbh...
Foodadventureswithliv
been wanting to come here for ages! i loved the look of the cafe it was adorable! friendly staff and great coffee <br/><br/> i had “the brit” omg sooo good it was poached eggs with home made hash browns, pork belly, melted cheese and beetroot relish ?? service was quick and the menu had heaps of Gluten Free options which makes me want to go back to try more!

So disappointed, we were excited to try out the place and traveled for it, I run a cafe in Melbourne myself and have been a specialty coffee barista for over a decade, we walked in to blasting pop music too loud to order over, decided to get takeaway due to it and the coffee is honestly one of the worst My partner and I have ever had. Left it on the table after one sip (we would never waste a coffee but god) it was worse than servo coffee in the 2000s. The place is fitted out nicely like it has a lot of potential yet staff in a tight mini dress. With their knickers and bum cheeks showing from the bottom is bloody off putting in the 8 degree weather, not to mention mess all over the coffee benches and milk jugs Clearly haven’t been rinsed in hours (milk thickly stuck to sides) the same milk was resteamed for 3 sets of coffees. I can’t believe the owner has let the staff create such a terrible atmosphere in such a nice venue. Coffee is so easy to get right if you use common sense. I’ll come and teach your staff how to look after a business and make a good coffee for free if that’s what it takes! Such a shame.
Gillianmiles
Food is very tasty and quick to come out, lots of space inside and out which is rare for a cafe. Always accommodating and child friendly. Great spot to have brekkie and they do good coffee
Angelina Nido
Coffee was nice... food no so much. I ordered the couscous chicken salad. Couscous was clumpy and the size of meatballs. Nuts was missing. Husband ordered salmon breakfast way to much sour cream and salmon was not fresh. Don’t think we will be returning.

an amazing cafe with amazing staff. great attention to detail, food is always good.<br/><br/>its become very popular so a good idea to get there early.

Nice setting for a morning brunch! Lots of seating inside and outside too! Some staff are not quite clear on explaining food proportions or ingredients and can sometimes take time to get to place an order but once that’s done it’s pretty quick for food to come out and they do split bills

I was so disappointed with today’s service. The food was lovely however after finding a hair mixed in with our mushrooms half way through eating it, we were put off. It took over 20 minutes before someone came to clear our plates. We informed the waitress that there was a hair, showed her the hair, she acknowledged this then took the plates to the kitchen. When we went to pay, they said the plate with the hair can have a 30% discount. I think it is disgraceful to charge someone for a dish that could not be finished due to having HAIR in it. I understand it’s human error. I did not expect the whole tables meal to be free but it is only fair to deduct the dish that could not be consumed due to having the chefs hair cooked in it. <br/>I can’t imagine the management of this cafe, or anyone who works there, would be happy paying for a meal and that had hair in it. <br/>Will not be returning.

A very very popular cafe in Mitcham area. Tried several times, good location with outside seating area. Good for chat with friends. The food is nice, and service is good. Definitely will come back again.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
Great spot to chill on the weekends for brunch! The outdoors area is especially awesome for the summer. Love the range of delicious and healthy food! The coffee and service is always top notch!

Came here for a late brunch on a Saturday. <br/><br/>Pros: food was yummy! My lamb was over cooked for my liking but this didn’t over effect the enjoyment of the meal. The smashed avo and lamb salad looked great and my friends reportedly positively on them. Huge portion sizes. Standard price for a cafe. Big menu. Friendly staff. Indoor/outdoor seating options.<br/><br/>Cons: sooooo noisy! The place was not full but the meals took a while to come out, though the coffees were quick. <br/><br/>I’d come back again. <br/><br/>

Mithcam doesn't have many options for brunch, aside from this small strip of cafes in the main shopping area. My favourite of these would be Dark Horse on Brit... the variety here is great, and I especially love the muffins and baked goods at the front of the cafe. The food is nothing too stand out, but if you're hungry and want a brunch close to home, this is the place to go :)
Blossom
Had breakfast there this morning. I ordered the waffles with poached pear, berries and ‘mascarpone’.<br/>As soon as I took the first mouthful of what was meant to be mascarpone I realised immediately that it was whipped cream.<br/>I’ve had mascarpone many times as it’s very common in breakfast dishes. <br/>When I mentioned it to the lovely waitress she went and mentioned it to the chef who insisted its mascarpone and its probably the brand that tastes different!<br/>It’s insulting that that they think people are so stupid that they won’t notice the difference between the two and then to deny it rather than apologise and perhaps say they ran out and had to substitute. <br/>This place is too inconsistent and I won’t be back. Too many other great cafes in the east that don’t try to pull the wool over the customers eyes.<br/>Very disappointing to have a massive amount of whipped cream all over my breakfast first thing in the morning. Yuk.

Lovely place for brunch! The coffee was good, as was the food, and the service even better. Staff were very lovely and friendly, and we will definitely be going back.

"Would you like a piece of plastic with your meal?"<br/><br/>Apart from the small piece of plastic that ended up in my meal, my tandoori chicken salad was below average, especially for the high price tag. My chicken breast was dry and like a rock. The salad was ok but it was a bit drowned in dressing. My friend had the big breakfast and it looked alright but no one can ruin a basic fry up. <br/><br/>No, I did not complain about the plastic in my meal cos I couldn't be bothered. The staff looked like they didn't care so I didn't feel like telling them. I just wanted to eat my meh meal and leave this apathetic place. <br/><br/>I do not recommend it and I think the only reason this place is busy is simply because there aren't any other cafes in this area.  Drive a little bit more and go elsewhere, even Eastland has better cafes.
The Walking Foodies
Definitely a popular cafe in the area. Nice place to eat with friendly staff and plenty of options on the menu. We had Smoothies as usual and enjoyed both the Mango Match and Acai Super Berry. The Smashed Avo Breakfast was delicious, would recommend the Mushroom & Asparagus Brekky as a lighter option. Did not appreciate being charged a processing fee for paying by EFTPOS and it appeared the girls in front of us didn’t feel it was right either. Gotta say they lost points for this.
Kom.silvia
Definitely the best place in the area. Always good quality, many options for everyone, plenty of outside and inside tables of different sizes. Staff is always quick and friendly, however sometimes there is very busy and need to wait for their attention. Veggie burger is great!! And most important - best coffee in Mitcham :)
ToFeedTwo
Dark Horse on the Brit is a great local option in Mitcham that makes dining simple (nothing overly pretentious) and delicious. The café is easily the highlight of all eateries in Mitcham – with no shortage of options on the menu and caters for all. Neeeiiiighhhh! Oh boy.<br/> <br/>Our meals: Cajun Chicken Salad was fresh and delicious. The spiced lamb skewers were succulent & flavoursome – with a salad that was more feta than salad! Pretty good. As per usual, the compulsory side of fries served as a fresh, hot, welcome addition to our meals with accompanying sauces.
LaLaLann
Located in Mitcham. One of the best in town. As I live nearby, this is my top choice for a morning breakfast or brunch. The staff were friendly and the coffee really good!❤️
Christina Mathiasz
Love love love this place!! We had 4 delicious meals and the coffee was perfection. All the produce on our plates were fresh! 🍓🌶️🍌They were more than happy to accommodate a sesame allergy and though we had one small issue with one of the meals (not worth mentioning), the staff were very helpful and the manager very sincere. Atmosphere was a little loud but expected for a busy Saturday morning. Will definately be coming back!
The.Top.Lifestylee
"Smashed avo"<br/>Fresh ingredients and was a generous serving. The balsamic was a great touch. The service was ok but the place had a nice friendly atmosphere. The quinoa just felt out of place in this dish.
Amy
This cafe has been a family favourite for a while. Great food, great coffee, and a really nice place to sit outside on a sunny day. However I have been disappointed the last few times I have visited by the poached eggs. The yolk has been hard and the eggs cold. So today when I visited I asked the waitress for my eggs to be runny, and she replied "that's how they come". When they came they were not runny and they were cold. I did not send them back as it was extremely busy and I was really hungry. Can't find fault with the flavours of the food and the hashbrowns are amazing, but these firm poached eggs are so disappointing every time! <br/><br/>Also, please put the melted cheese back on The Brit! It was the best thing on the menu.
Sharon Afflick
We go there often. Never been disappointed. Service is always friendly. Food is fresh and very well presented. The desserts are amazing. won't go anywhere else.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
We ordered the Middle Eastern calamari salad to share. The calamari was deliciously tender and crisp. I loved the tumeric tinted aioli that came with it. There was plenty of salad that had plenty of balsamic vinegar drizzled through it - it was a tad tart for me. While I couldn't fault the calamari, some of the salad ingredients looked a bit stale.... there were quite a few lettuce and cabbage pieces that were browning on the edges and some of the stuff looked limp.<br/>If it wasn't for the fact that Whitehorse City Council enforces the parking restrictions like a council that relies heavily on fines to top up its coffers (we know this from painful past experience), we would have stayed to try some of the fine looking sweet stuffs on offer. Oh well... another time.
Lauren
ATT: New mothers. I went today to join a group booking but was met by a waitress that looked at my pram like it was a spaceship and told me I would need to use a high chair and prams couldn't go to 'that side'. I could see there was actually plenty of room at the table but no path to get there. We had booked an extra spot to allow room. When she saw I was getting upset and about to leave, she then offered to make way, although telling me I should have called to give them warning that a pram was coming. Do they also require warning for wheelchairs? I felt embarrassed and left. Not all babies can sit in high chairs. Please make your establishment pram and wheelchair friendly.

Food and coffee is excellent! Staff were pleasant and helpful, but it was loud and hot. It was a Saturday morning so expected to be busy of course, and I think it's a good sign of its popularity. But if you don't like crowds maybe stick to a weekday :)
Lucy Rose
Our order was lost and it took 30 minutes to get our food. Which still came before the drinks. Food was flavourless and overcooked. Quite squishy space and very noisy. Best thing was the coffee.
Melbourne Foodie Connoisseur
Conveniently located, this place is a stand out in amongst a bustling cafe strip. There is abundant seating, however it can be quite cramped when busy. <br/>Service is ok, food and coffee is good, the menu is extensive, you are really spoiled for choice here. It's also very reasonably priced considering the generous portion sizes and high quality ingredients.<br/>Well worth the visit, I will certainly come again.
Denise Tran
Food was phenomenal, service was great.<br/>The servings were quite generous, the falafel and pita from the lunch menu had a beetroot hummus to die for. It brought everything on the plate together and added vibrant colour to the dish.<br/>Definitely recommend this place!
Sarah Ellen
Regularly visit here for breakfast, has the best coffee I've found in this area! Nice places to sit, either inside with large windows looking out, or in a nice sunny spot outside.<br/>Service is always prompt and friendly, with food and coffee arriving in good time.<br/>Food is always delicious, particularly fond of the mushroom breakfast. Everything is reasonably priced, and well worth it!
Om Nom Nom
Definitely coming back here. The staff were friendly, the food was delicious and I felt it was reasonably priced considering the portion sizes and quality of the food. I ordered the Dark Britt and everything was just perfection, from the way the poached eggs spilled their yolks when pierced with a fork to the flavour of the chorizo. Also, the hash browns that came with it were much larger than expected. If you're imagining slim little McDonald's type hash browns, think stout columns about the size of a small potato each instead. Great value for money!
Mr Cool
Saw the place quite busy so decided to give it a go. Ask for popular dish which is broccoli and cauliflower fritter. Colourful dish and well presented. The fritter is a bit fusion given there is some India herbs. Not too bad for the fritter. I'm not sure how other things gel with the fritter - avocado and cream? Cream maybe.... avocado has good colour but certainly not good with the fritter. Maybe just me. Price wise is a bit too high for this plate. Feeling hungry after this and so I go for their muffins. Muffin is definitely no no. Tasteless, dry and break into pieces. If not for the peanut and nuttella on top of it, i will not able to eat half of it. Coffee is good. Maybe will try other dishes if I'm in this area again.
Jaime
I decided to give the cafe another chance after the first time I went and had a bad experience- I shouldn't have. I understand the cafe was busy and received a good, hot coffee relatively quickly. But the wait on food was just under an hour- at least tell us if it's going to be such a long wait and don't expect me to know I'm going to have to wait an hour for a lukewarm meal that did not live up to expectations. Cold, tasteless food was not worth waiting for and I definitely won't be going back
CbdAUS
No one mentioned there was a wait... food took 45 minutes and was warm to cold. I had the big breakfast and was extremely disappointed, really salty and flavourless. Cheap flavourless sausages. Unflavoured scrambled eggs and unflavoured spinach mushroom and cherry tomatoes and one thin slice of sourdough toast. Worst breakfast I've had in a long time... girlfriend had the Spanish and it was a similar story... A bit of avocado smeared on a thin slice of sourdough with one poached egg and six slices of chorizo which was just warm for 17.50! Nothing like the nice menu descriptions.
My Thats Tasty
The menu is plentiful and everything is executed to the T plus the specials are always a great change. Food is completely to die for. The wait staff are lovely and attentive. Their barista is 5 stars and I've never had a bad drink. We visit almost once a week and we have each tried half the menu and neeeever had a bad meal. Great for allergy people too! I've never had an upset stomach coming here.<br/><br/>My only warning are those that don't like being packed in like sardines. I generally don't mind, it means we always get a seat - even if we're rubbing elbows with our neighbour. And generally the service is quite fast so we're not in there long. Otherwise we're sure to visit during non-peak hours to have some privacy.
Jlimxo
I believe in giving credit when it's due and this has to be my Fav coffee spot. <br/>I come here often and it's never once let me down.<br/>- Great food, great coffee and great staff.<br/>

After reading many reviews and seeing many Insta-worthy photos, I decided an overdue brunch date was required in order to see what the Mitcham cafe had to offer. Ordering the brunch burger, it was perfectly cooked and the hash brown on the side was a perfect addition - reminded me of Grilld chips with the herbs and the potato, so would highly recommend. Beautiful to sit either inside or outside as well as prompt, friendly service - returning definitely!
Travelling Pom
So delicious!! I had the smashed avocado and my boyfriend had the breakfast burger. Coffee was really nice too! Service was good! Saturday afternoon was super busy but nothing was a long wait. Definitely come here again 👍
Jay Hong
Our family went there for a late lunch on weekend when they were about to close.<br/><br/>Friendly staff welcomed and told us to place an order as their kitchen is closing soon but assure us we can have a table as long as we want.<br/><br/>We ordered Grilled Fish (i can't recall what sort of fish it was. lol) and Wagyu beef burger.<br/><br/>I am not sure if because i was starving but the beef burger I had was definitely the one of my best in Melbourne.<br/><br/>Fish dish was so-so but my wife and kid loved it.<br/><br/>Highly recommended and we will surely come back.
Reiijoce
Not too busy on Saturday 11am, was seated promptly, orders taken and food came out rather fast. But COLD POACHED EGGS,burnt toast (one side of the bread was all blacken) ,bacon was dry.<br/>Only consolation was the usual good coffee.<br/>For Food, No, but for Coffee, Yes.
Theknifeandforktalk
Absolutely delicious!! Bit pricey but the quality and quantity is there. I ordered the smashed avocado dish which was $17.90 with feta, quinoa, chia toast, cherry tomatoes and spinach and it was just delicious. The outside area was lovely especially on a sunny day. Staff were super friendly even though you could tell how busy they were. They also split bills which is very convenient! Will definitely be back!

Food is always great.<br/>Service is great. <br/>Sit inside and forget being able to talk. <br/>The acoustics are like a heavy metal band playing in your bathroom.<br/>Love the place but they need to do something about every sound bouncing off the walls.
EatingTheGoods
Friendly modern cafe in Mitcham. They were busy on the day but was staffed well and we werent kept waiting. Food was good cept SO thought the paleo plate was bit "dry". Very healthy options however. Their coffee was ok but for eastern suburb, not bad. Their fresh juices looked good. Will try next time

My new favourite out of the many Mitcham/Ringwood cafes. <br/>Great coffee. Clever, interesting menu and I haven't had a meal that I didn't like yet.<br/>Friendly staff and the place is always busy!! Lots of space to sit outside though. <br/><br/>
LiamzlEats
Staff are great, food is sensational and great atmosphere. The clear winner of the Mitcham/Nunawading cafe scene. Such a great selection of high quality breakfast lunch/brunch options.
Andrew T
This cafe, in a small outdoor mall in Mitcham, was packed with people (mid morning, weekday), which is a testament to  its popularity . There are plenty of outside dining settings with shade umbrellas, and behind a glass facade there is a reasonably spacious dining area inside. The decor is modern with timber and metal table settings. The menu included some vegetarian choices, and I opted for fruit toast, which was very good, and full of chunky fruit pieces.  The coffee was also well made. It was quite noisy, even outside, the result of a full house (but I could have happily forgone the grisling child).  I found the service attentive and friendly -  I was approached as soon as I arrived and provided a water jug soon after.
Stephen G
With a few more cafes etc around this area could be great minus the giant pet shop that needs to go. <br/><br/>Ok this place is a goto no fuss no what you're getting every time a reasonable priced good breakfast.<br/>If you're hangover as fark this is a good place, got a good vibe staff enjoy there job (management must be nice to work for unlike some places you can smell the hatred in the air which makes you want to leave asap<br/>unlike this place you want to waste the day here drinking coffee and sweating/baking in you're own filth.)<br/><br/>A good 4 out of 5. Advice: Take your mates here when you're all hung as fark.
Ben B
We went in at 9am on a Monday morning. The coffee were mediocre. The porridge I ordered was tasteless. <br/><br/>The service was extremely poor and unfriendly. The staff were inattentive and seemed almost resentful of us. If this is a white people only cafe, they should put a sign on the door. We were polite and cordial, yet we were still treated badly.<br/><br/>We had to get out of our seats to get the menu ourselves and it took ages to be served even though the cafe was not busy at the time. We were not given water even though the waitress had given the white couple next to us water. I would not come here again. We felt like second class citizens after coming to this place.

Dark Horse is one of my favourite go-to local places where I know I will always get friendly & prompt service, good coffee and great food. The menu is great & they have new specials all the time which is nice.

Decent food.  Decent coffee.  Friendly service.  It's not the type of place I'd go out of my way to visit but if I want a coffee or a cafe-style lunch and I'm in the area, it would be the place I go to.

Baked eggs were delicious and the coffee was very good for a cafe so far from the CBD. Very accommodating wait staff and pretty good service. Will be coming back!

Lovely service and food. Smashed avocado was fresh and delicious. Fried chicken burger was tasty with nice bun. Only thing would be that it's a bit squishy and loud but that can't be helped with such a popular spot.

UPDATE: finally had brunch here. Service was delightful, food was average and coffee was good but had a hair in it. <br/><br/>———-<br/><br/>Popped in for some take away coffee on a Sunday afternoon. The place was super busy which is always a good sign. Service was prompt. Unfortunately the coffee was average. I will definitely be back for lunch though because the food looked amazing!!

My husband, our kids and I have visited Dark Horse on the Brit several times over the last few months and I am excited to say it is our new favourite. Each time we have visited it has been buzzing with people, usually on a Sunday, late morning, both inside and out (even on the coldest of mornings) yet they always manage to make room for us (3+ a high chair). The coffee is superb and my husband and I love the breakfast burger with their homemade hash browns. Several options for the kids means they are happy and satisfied too. Despite a lack of floor/play space for the kids, we are always greeted with crayons and colouring sheets from the friendly staff which keeps the kids amused for at least 5 minutes before their baby chinos arrive. On top of their tasty breakfasts their pricing is also fantastic. We leave other cafe breakfasts with little change from a $100 note (kidding, we pay card, not cash, but you know what I mean), but each visit we've found Dark Horse to be very reasonably priced. Thanks Dark Horse, we will definitely be back!

New kids on the block with a serious name ....<br/><br/>Yes, the newest, a newbie with lots of experience staff, great to see Daniel on the La Marzocco pumping those liquid gold, great work Dan., thanks for the Soy Latte, as always seductive and addictive.<br/><br/>Can only be a blessing to Mitcham Mall, now they are upping the ante on quality and variety.<br/><br/>Great big well setup place, certainty the busiest cafe in this morning.

Saturday brunch for 9. We were advised to call ahead for a big table, which we did and the staff were great organizing our seating. Despite it being very busy, our food came out reasonably quick. The food was well presented and yummy. The staff were very friendly & attentive. Would definitely go back!

Last time we're eating here - went on a colder day (had dogs), ordered a burger each, and ended up waiting 20 minutes, whilst people who arrived after us received their meal before we did.<br/><br/>Overheard our dining neighbour's wife say the same thing about how long it was taking, she and her son left, the husband stayed on to get the takeaway coffee that took 20 minutes (apparently because their party wasn't complete they didn't fulfil the order till they all got there even though the husband ordered before the wife arrived).<br/><br/>The food was OK but it dulls the experience when it takes ages to get a meal.   I think they have trouble coping, and it's not the first time we've had that kind of issue here.    Sorry guys, we'll find somewhere else.

We went to this cafe today for breakfast. 2 adults and 2 children. Immediately attracted to the site because of the visible kitchen in back of the cafe as opposed to neighbouring cafes. I had the smashed avocado with quinoa, spinach, goats cheese and poached eggs. Flavour explosion. My wife had the omelette. Probably the most fluffy omelette even eaten. Again full of flavour. Kids devoured a bunch mini gingerbread men which sit on a jar on the front counter. Coffee is prob best in Mitcham. Nice strong blend where you can actually taste the coffee rather than warm milk with a slight hint of coffee! Service was very friendly and attentive without being pushy. They got busy quickly but still managed to handle the volume. Will definitely be back

Very busy cafe so be prepared to wait. Staff do an amazing job to keep up with the orders. Very noisy due to the over the top volume of music ... and if you ask why the music has to be up so loud.. Watch out.. They turn it up louder.
Travelling Palate
Absolutely fantastic cafe in Mitcham. Delightful coffee and an amazing selection of cafes from #littlebertha. We enjoyed a decaf latte and sour cherry and lemon cake- so decadent!!!

This is a very nice looking cafe with good food. However they struggle with high demand and today I had the worst cafe experience of my life. Waited 40 minutes for food before asking on a status update, food arrived another 20 minutes later. Luckily it was delicious though my sisters porridge was stodgy and needed more milk. We asked for the bill four times before receiving it. We observed the problem being systematic as often requests were passed from one staff member to the next, who would then subsequently get distracted. Luckily after the second iteration of the bill arrived there was a substantial discount applied. Avoid in peak times.

Great food, coffee and service for a bustling spot in the heart of Mitcham. Always a favourite and very family/toddler friendly.

Last time I was in Melbourne the service at this place was decent, however this time around the wait for ordering food took over 40 minutes even though it wasn't that busy, the waitress could of mentioned it when we were ordering however i didn't find out until after 25 minutes asking where the food was. The waitress also wasn't that informed about the meals and special. Once the food came out the portion size has much smaller then expected, the polenta chips were not crunchy and a bit soggy, the grilled fish was only 2 pieces and not seasoned well and the dish had a bit too much veges. Not worth the wait for the meal and dissapointed.

Serves a fantastic, yummy, good looking breakfast. They do have lots of customers though, so they are the type of place that won't let you sit and chat for very long. Bill in a bowl was the last dish served and it wasn't asked for.

Came in for breakfast and had the super bowl. I enjoyed the flavors of this meal the coffee was not bad but could have been better. Only negative the music was to loud.

I usually come here every few months. It's a decent sized cafe situated amongst other cafes, so it's generally got a bit of bustle & is great for people watching. It's kid-friendly and has plenty of space both inside & out.<br/><br/>The food is always consistent & the portions are pretty decent for what you pay. Staff are friendly & wander around so it's easy to get their attention.<br/><br/>Today I had the pancake stack. What I read on the menu was not what I got, however I wasn't complaining. It was probably better than what was written. The pancakes were fluffy & it had plenty of strawberries & generous scoop of ice cream. If I was to be picky, I'm pretty sure the ice cream had nuts in it, so a warning would have been useful. I don't have allergies so it tasted amazing to me, but just putting it out there for people who do.

The so called "margarita" pizza was not nice. My 3 1/2 year old wouldn't share his salami pizza half/half, and I couldn't blame him.<br/>Ps: Please, please bring back the baked Spanish chorizo & eggs to the breakfast menu...

Requested strong latte... coffee arrived burnt. The salmon avocado was awesome though. Service can be patchy.. but for food wise.. worth a return visit.

This was a great find for an impromptu lunch. <br/><br/>Madamimadam beans are used for coffee which I absolutely enjoyed. I had a flat white and thought the pour was more of a latte. Even though I complain about the pour, it really comes down to the taste. <br/><br/>I had a Rubben Sandwich. This was how it was spelt, though I think it's a take on the Reuben. It was average. The sandwich itself is a generous serve and they use rye bread which is a plus. I think the sandwich should have had less sauerkraut and should have been cut in half due to the size. Yes, I know I can cut it myself, but the knives on the table weren't sharp enough to do it. I ended up with mashed bread. The meat was OK. Nothing special, and a bit dry. <br/><br/>Service was excellent. Attentive without fussing, and everyone was friendly. <br/><br/>Will definitely come back and try their corn fritters on the menu!<br/><br/>Bonus: They have ample supply of newspapers. I dislike when places stock barely enough newspapers. Like why bother if only two people at a time can read it?<br/><br/>Minus: The sandwich was served on a cheese board. I dislike it when food is served on chopping boards, cheese boards, any board that is really not suitable for the purpose. I see no reason not to use a plate.

Great venue, great food, great staff. Try the Brit, their signature dish with hash browns, relish, cheese, poached eggs and bacon - absolutely delicious. Order 3 or 4 perfectly made lattés to go with it and you'll have the best breakfast in the eastern suburbs.

Came here for brunch today with friends, food and coffee is good, with a good range of food even making the fussy ones happy. Averagely priced with friendly staff, will be back to try again
Honest Mrs Belly.
Great food and atmosphere BUT my friend and I left quite DISCONTENTED. Aside from ordering a latte and a big breakfast, my friend had asked for a cup of hot water instead of a glass of cold water. It did not even cross our minds that it would cost a cent as all other eateries we've been to don't. We only found out that they charged her an extra $2 for the petty cup of hot water when we went to pay the bill. Naturally, we were flabbergasted that she had to pay for it so we questioned the waiter. The waiter didnt really know why it costed extra but said we had to pay it, which then the barista butted in. He said the $2 fee was calculated based on the fact that they have to pour water into a cup, bring it out to us, and then clean the cup after we've finished it. We did pay for it... BUT LIKE C'MON, that's the lamest reason I've heard. So should we pay for the use of cutlery as well since they need to bring it out and wash after we've used it? And why aren't we charged for normal glass of cold water then? <br/><br/>Seriously, although the food was nice, it was quite pricey so it's not like they weren't making a huge profit. I know that it seems like we're making a big deal out of a petty $2 but we think a cup of hot water is so petty that we shouldn't even need to pay for it.<br/><br/>I would've otherwise given a higher rating the cafe but that cup of hot water just ruined our experience, and it's unlikely we'd be returning in the near future.

Nice looking cafe inside & outside. Good food & coffee. Nice place to have breakfast if you're in the area. The inside of the cafe is very pretty & the owners care about the customer's experience xx
