Review Jade Village - Mitcham

Tim Briglia
This place was a good place to get freshly cooked Chinese food but it had changed. Fried rice was disgusting, it was old and crusty with no vegetables at all. Very disappointing. I won’t be going back

Got takeaway from here last night - was so looking forward to a yummy satay chicken and special fried rice - hadn’t had Chinese takeaway for years!! It was bland, tasteless, and totally underwhelming!! So terribly disappointed! Used to be a highly regarded local restaurant - Kevin Sheedy was a regular - but those days must be well and truly behind them.

We have been going to Jade Village on and off for over 30 years. The food is old fashioned Chinese and is really lovely. I like that there is no MSG so never dry after eating there. We tend to eat there on a Sunday and it’s very quiet with usually a handful of ladies out lunching, elderly couples or an occasional family get together. If you like sweet and sour pork and lemon chicken with fried rice then this place is for you... They do the best Combination Fried Noodles in the area... Highly recommended. 😋

Very happy with tonight's service from Jade Village, so fast, so fresh, so tasty. Well priced, and a great idea midweek for dinner to the door, thank you so much :)

Been coming here for years and is best chinese food around. Even better that they cater for coeliacs and gluten free meals for my husband. Excellent service and excellent food.

Lovely Chinese food just didn’t want to wait 90 minutes to receive it. No compensation given had to argue the point. Would still go back

We've had takeaway from Jade Village a number of times and the food is always fantastic. We were a bit concerned that the change in ownership may change this, but we're pleased to say the food is still great (it's still the same chef and staff). Highly recommended

This is the first time I came here with my boy. It was an amazingly good experience. I ordered spring roll, shrimp cake, fried rice and fried squid. They are not only yummy but also fresh. You will not feel oily for these fried food. And the squid is so juicy. What is the most recommendable point is this place is so clean and tidy. The owner is kind and nice. I definitely will come again.

Dad & I stopped here for lunch before heading in to town today (Sunday). We were welcomed warmly, seated promptly and presented with the a la carte menu.

Interestingly, though there is no mention of it, they do have yum cha on Sundays (midday to 2:30, $19.90, or $15 for kids 3 to 11 - all you can eat ... definitely coming back to try it), but you do have to ask for the menu - not massive, but everything you'd expect, and order the dishes as you go, rather than select from a trolley.

The a la carte menu was mostly as you'd expect, so we ordered spring rolls and beef & chicken satay sticks as entree followed by their special Birdsnest combination - in a beautiful light, fine, crispy version of the Birdsnest and scallops with ginger and spring onions - which was serves on a sizzling plate. As there were only us, and two other tables here, the service was impeccable! The waiter apologised about the delay in serving our mains - even though it was less than 10 minutes since we'd finished our entrees anyway. Other customers has arrived since we had, and by the time we'd finished there were half a dozen or so tables full.

It's kind of in an awkward spot, on the Maroondah Hwy service road, in the city direction side, but there's heaps of parking in the service road and under the building itself.

If you're looking for traditional Sichuan or Hunan cuisine, this may not be the place for you, it's more Cantonese - and much better than a lot of the "Australian suburban Chinese" restaurants around.

They're licensed & BYO - a glass of Yellow seemed expensive at $7 (more than the retail price or a bottle from a bottle shop), but a glass of Salinger seemed quite reasonable at $9 (less half the retail price of a bottle)!

Highly recommended - definitely going back to try the yum cha!

If you want to wait 40 minutes between courses and still feeling hungry after the banquet then definitely give this place a go! Food was...nice. Staff were... nice. Timeliness and amount were severely lacking... Very, very disappointed with the amount we got for a bill somewhere near $400 and almost 4 hrs of our time. We made sure to go early so the littlies were no trouble but it made no difference. If you want to be disappointed give this place a go!

Very Disappointing attempt at Yum Cha. Very limited choice. About half of the dishes that we ordered tasted like they were straight out of a packet from the frozen food isle of a supermarket.

I went to this resturant last weekend and found this is one of the best resturant in Mitcham area. I know rate 4 maybe too much but the other resturants in this area are all over rated which make it hard to find good resturant.

Tonight hubby was away for work and after a long day with playgroup and doing house work, I just did not want to cook dinner. After browsing on the Eatnow website I decided to try an old favourite of mine, Chinese food. The Jade village Chinese restaurant in Mitcham really stood out to me so I decided to order from there.

Had a takeaway dinner from here last night. Food was pretty good,we ordered the honey chicken, mongolian lamb and special fried rice all of which had a pretty good flavour kick, however the honey in the honey chicken was a bit watered down.
Service was pretty good.
Worse Chinese food ever. As a Chinese. I feel that the food here is very bad and just disappointing. Even the worse restaurant in my home country Malaysia is better than this. Hell I can cook better food

Amazing! We received a Grou.... Amazing!
We received a Groupon voucher to try this Restaurant, and we are over the moon. We tried 5 different dishes, and everything is really scrumptious.
We'll be back, over and over...

Gluten-free and delicious. We've eaten in and had take away many times and always been impressed with their food and knowledge of GF options for their dishes.

I have been eating here for 12 years and LOVE the food!

Coeliacs proceed with caution..... I was recently unwell after eating at jade village- I'm medically diagnosed coeliac disease. After further investigation they use use various commercial sauces that are thickened with gluten containing ingredients. They also need to ensure that the oil they use for gluten free dishes is actually not oil with that has been previously mixed with gluten ingredients in other dishes. Stay away from the sauce that goes over the gluten free lemon chicken and stay away from the Chinese pork in the fried rice which has a sauce not suitable for coeliacs.

Awesome. Amazing food, service and hospitality. Highly recommend it. Been a few times now. I have a severe allergy to MSG so this is perfect for me. Even without the allergy I still find this the best Chinese restaurant

Went to Jade Village as it's close to home and have just moved back into the area. The decor was pretty average but the food and service were fantastic. The owner roamed around and chatted to the guests, having a laugh and making us feel welcome. Some reviews say it's overpriced but I can honestly say it's been a long time since two of us have had a three course meal for $80 in total! I was also impressed with the wine list (although we BYO I took a peek) - the mark up on price per bottle was minimal - something quite rare in restaurants these days. Not really the locale for a romantic night out, but well worth a visit.

Overrated. Very overrated restaurant. not sure what all the fuss is about. food was highly priced and nothing special. flavour lacking and not much better than a food court take-away

Great take away, also loooooved the duck rolls
Me..
Great Food Great Service. Was amazing to eat Gluten Free in a Chinese Restaurant after so many years.. We needed Gluten Free and Dairy Free can our needs were catered for with out any hassle or fuss, even down to the banana fritter for dessert. The staff were great and very understanding..

Best Chinese Around, Gluten Free. We have been coming to Jade Village for over 25 years and it is our favourite local restaurant and our favourite Chinese in Melbourne, we are so lucky that William can also accommodate (REALLY well) Gluten free since my husband is now coeliac! Can pretty much do most dishes GF! He can even do separate pancakes for the peking duck GF! William really understands the GF way!

William and his staff are always wonderful, the food is the BEST.
Some favourites are the lettuce cups, spicy squid, black pepper & Celery chicken, peking duck and the sticky toffee apples!

Always look forward to a meal here!

Best Chinese around. This is by far the best chinese I have ever eaten. I have been here countless times and I have never been disappointed. William the owner is so lovely and knows so many customers.
The meat is always soft and is good quality.
the spicy beef lettuce cup is the best thing ever! If you don't like spicy don't worry because its not spicy, just avoid the couple of chili bits in it.

Highly recommend to anyone. you will never want to eat chinese anywhere else again

Blast from the past. Chinese food isn't in fashion right now is it? It suddenly dawned on me that we'd not gone out for Chinese in ages (not counting yum cha..umm or duck, yeah and Sichuan..or dumplings, k maybe it's more generic Chinese we haven't done for a while!). Our first visit to a Chinese restaurant for dinner in what feels like years, but isn't because, it's just that in many ways it felt like we'd gone back a couple of decades. That wasn't a bad thing! Very VERY affable service staff. Not enough places do cloth napkins these days, but Jade Village does. I do love the touch of the generously sized softly-scented washcloths we were given before we commenced our meal, another touch that is rarely seen these days (at least the places we usually frequent).

Early in the week, there weren't many diners eating in the restaurant, but parking in the depths of Mitcham (at least around the pub where this restaurant is situated) is a shocker. We'd not bargained on struggling to find a park in the 'burbs.

Wonton soup and chicken and sweetcorn soup was where we started. Flavour of my soup (wonton) surprised me - could I detect a hint of lard? Not overpowering, but there for sure. A traditional chef at the helm clearly! I found the soup OK, I was so focused on the lard flavour, I didn't really note the dumpling taste. The rest of the family enjoyed their soup and didn't overthink it as I did.

The Shredded Duck Rolls were ordered after a few comments here on Urbanspoon saying how good they were. Indeed they tasted lovely, I did find them a bit oily, but the taste, particularly with the sweet and sour sauce was very good.

A winner of a dish was the Honey Pepper Pork. Super-tender pork, and a not overly sweet sauce were separated by a crispy batter. The pepper was a lovely note without being too hot for the kids.

Braised Chicken with Vegetables was also beautifully tender, the chicken must have been 'velveted' so melt-in-the-mouth it was, the selection of veg was; diced baby corn, carrots, straw mushrooms, water chestnuts, onion and Chinese cabbage. It was a lovely mildly-flavoured dish, fresh and healthy.

Here's an interesting surprise, the lard flavour reappeared (for me, the family didn't seem to notice) in the Beef and Lettuce Fried Rice. Once again, not overpoweringly so, and I note, no other reviewer has mentioned it, but I would bet a little bit of money on the chef cooking with lard. Our seven-year old really enjoyed this rice, it was OK again for me.

Deep-Fried Ice Cream, Banana Fritter and Pineapple Fritter were the finishers for the children. All cooked very well, no hint of oiliness, and thankfully no hint of lard! These desserts were the classic way to finish off this meal, the syrup served with these desserts seemed to be a combination of maple and golden syrups - pretty yum if super-sweet.

We left very satisfied, all the food was good, one dish was great. Lovely tea, great service and a bit of a sense of being in a blast from the past. The food is cooked with care, it's not breaking any new ground, but I would eat here again. We were treated as old friends in spite of it being our first visit.

I haven't officially 'liked' this place, as I am still on the fence about the flavour of a couple of dishes, but I really WANT to like it because I felt good being in the space. A couple of really delicious old-fashioned Aussie-Chinese dishes were comforting. High quality ingredients, high quality service too. If the issue with parking wasn't a one-off we will have to give it another go.

Jade village. As we entered the restaurant for the second time. The man at the desk still remembered who we were and our names it made is feel very welcome. The waiter was very attentive. The restaurant is very spacious there were plenty of tables most were full. As we ordered, everything seemed great. After a long debate between the peeking duck and the chicken with vegetables I ordered the chicken it was amazing. There was a little bit of a wait between the entree and main but was definitely worth it. It was great quality at a reasonable price.

Good food good service. We had dinner on a Saturday night. The food was very tasty with no MSG or artificial colors/flavours. The service was good, our waiter was very attentive. Note- on the menu it said " minimum $26 charge per person Friday and Saturday nights". Although we spent more than that anyway. We will definitely be back!!

Pricey westernised chinese cuisine. Nice decor, good service, food is so so. The price you pay is for the decor and service. Food is good quality but portions are small. The food is suited to the western palate. Tea is charged at $3 per head. Exorbitant price for steamed rice.

Great restaurant. Good quality food with excellent service. Love taking the whole family there. Bonus for me as there is NO MSG!

Really Enjoyable. I go here often because the food is really tasty and the staff are very welcoming. The take away is also very good. My favourite would have to be the shredded duck rolls, they are amazing and the sepical fried rice is also really good. Great if you want a casual chinese meal.

First time dining in was a nice experience. Good food served with good old fashioned Chinese service. Will be going back to try the good variety of dishes on offer. Best one I have found close to ringwood
