I was lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful sushi boat at Sapporo on the weekend.
There was a range of different types of sushi and sashimi. The fish was super vibrant and fresh. It was also bigger than we expected, and was definitely a good portion size for 2 people. If there was a chicken sushi included and the green tea was stronger (was a bit diluted) I definitely would rate Sapporo a 5.
The lady working was very nice and attentive to us. We also were going to order more dishes (we didn't know how big the sushi boat was) and she was very kind in letting us wait to see the sushi boat first and then deciding if we still wanted extra. She offered to cancel these as we over ordered - we really appreciated this!
It definitely seems like this is the go to place for Japanese in Mitcham. I can see why! Thank you for having us.
From the moment we arrived all staff were very friendly. Young Andrew did most of the serving and he was very attentive. The food was beautiful, lots of flavours and very well priced.
This was our first visit and there were some seating restrictions but we will definitely return.
Phenomenal sushi š service was great as soon as you step into the door and attentive throughout the dinner. The boat of assortment sushi was so pretty and everything tasted so so fresh! Tempura was light and crispy, the batter very thin. You can tell that the sushi chef takes pride in the food that he makes, everything looks amazing. Would definitely recommend this place, I will be coming back for sure !
Great experience last night. Extremely friendly service. Well laid out restaurant. Great food at reasonable prices.
Super busy on a weekend night, Sapporo seems to be a local favourite in Mitcham. It's not hard to see why. Casual, down-to-earth and tasty Japanese food that will keep everyone happy.
We started off with ox tongue, grilled eggplant and fried oysters. Skilfully executed, with flavours that hit the spot. The sushi boat acted as the centrepiece of our meal, both figurative and literally speaking. Filled with fresh sashimi and sushi, this one is made for sharing. Also delicious was the soft shell crab roll. The soft shell crab was fried to crunchy perfection, and the sushi rice held itself well.
We ended our meal with desserts, and amongst the 4 flavours of ice cream that we tried, the black sesame and red bean was my favourite. The cookie crumble added a delightful crunch to the ice cream, such a simple but effective idea.
My friends and I had a very filling and satisfying meal, thank you!
generally good, friendly staff, plenty space, family friendly. would be great if there are not too much restrictions on zomato gold. provided a sheet of paper with rather complicated listing of whatās covered and not covered for zomato gold. funny thing is all bento is not applicable for zomato gold, even if itās for one person portion.
Invited for dinner I tried a range of dishes ranging from sushi, tempura, shabu shabu and other smaller items.
The sushi boats have a good variety and the fish is fresh. I really enjoyed the takoyaki here, nice and crispy on the outside and hot and gooey inside. The beef for the shabu shabu was fresh and the soup base was flavoursome. The tempura batter was light and crispy which to me is the most important aspect of tempura.
Overall a nice casual Japanese restaurant which is perfect for any occasion
This Japanese restaurant is located in Mitcham and they have been around for many years and are popular amongst the locals. We really like the variety on the menu as there is quite a few to choose from. We ordered the dishes below and are really happy.
We had the deluxe sushi boat, nasu dengaku, tempura set, katsu curry don, shabu shabu, some suhis to share and desserts. Could not fault any of the dishes as we really enjoyed it. The deluxe sushi set was really yummy and they were really fresh. The shabu shabu came with a nice broth with slice beef, tofu and vegetables and the broth was really good. The sushis were made fresh to order and the soft shell crab sushi was good. The Katsu Curry on rice was really nice as the curry sauce was cooked nicely and the flavours were good. Do save some room for dessert as they have a variety on ice creams available. We had the matcha, red bean and mango and it was really nice, love how they include biscuit crumbs below to give it the extra textures.
I really loved our meal here and will definitely be back to get my Japanese fix.
Nice Japanese restaurant with relaxing atmosphere and great quality of sushi and sashimi. Highly recommended.
Very yummy katsu curry and bento box. Staff super friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend to everyone who lives in Mitcham. Will be back for sure.
Visited Sapporo with Zomato Gold for dinner. The sashimi was fresh and food was delicious. Staff was friendly. Restaurant was spacious. Would recommend a visit.
My family was here for dinner tonight using Zomato Gold The service is good and the food is tasty. The salmon sashimi is especially fresh .Definitely worth a visit. Will be back again.
Enjoyed a $46 pp banquet at Sapporo tonight.
1) miso soup - a bit too salty but liked the generous amount of mushrooms and seaweed
2) sashimi - beautiful and fresh
3) crumbed oyster - this was delicious. The batter was very crunchy.
4) dumplings - good filling and I liked the vinegar dipping sauce
5) tempura - so crunchy! The plating was beautiful with the tempura fan.
6) seafood and vegetable hotpot - very generous serving of veggies. Broth was a bit bland though.
7) fruit and ice cream ) thick cut watermelon was juicy and sweet. Ice cream was creamy but didn't have too much green tea flavor
8) green tea - complimentary drink
Overall we were very satisfied with the food and the serving sizes.

Came here with family. Not expecting anything amazing considering it was a Japanese restaurant in Mitcham and the decor not looking overly inviting. However, I came home pleasantly surprised with the fresh and tasty Japanese food. sushi is made in front of everyone.
Iād recommend then sushi/sashimi boat and the Wafu steak.
Iāll be back again.
Had a lovely experience here. The staff were super accommodating, service was amazing! And best of all the food was good too. Felt like homey Japanese food. The type thatās good for Friday nights after work or when you just want somewhere cozy to hang out and catch up with friends! Your friendly neighbourhood gem š
The staff there are extremely nice and although itās not authentic itās still quite nice.
The udon options were quite limited though and some of the prices I found to be over priced such as the sushi.
The food overall is quite nice and would definitely go there again.
Went here on Father's Day eve as everything else was booked out. Was sooooo surprised at the quality of food and service! We shared a shabu shabu dish and had soooo much fun cooking our food in the broth. Was lovely service and good food so we will def be back. Meljo
Have been eating here on a regular basis since they opened. We have always found the food extremely nice and have never had an issue. Staff can be a little reserved but mainly because they are students. Have always had the house special sushi and it is clean, fresh and delicious. The wafu steak melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this place. Have had take away from here too and assuming you don't have to go too far before you eat it it is fine. Obviously gets average if you don't eat it for a fair while but what take away doesn't?
Always amazes me people that whinge with take away because it's cold etc - what do they think it's going to be by the time you get it home??
We had a good dinner at Sapporo, the Sushi was fresh made and the service was good too. To the end there pit the heater off and it was freezing in the restaurant!
Have enjoyed this place over many years and always found the food good quality and very tasty. It appears that the floor staff are a little bit inexperienced and maybe just students. But overall leave the place very satisfied.
A local gem! Very friendly service, very comfortable inside and great food. The seafood teppanyaki was incredible. Will definitely be back šš¼
Three words - soft shell crab sushi. Order as much as you can. (Everything on the menu is fairly nice though!). A busy, neat family restaurant.
Regular go to place for lunch,
Service is great, food and price both represent value.
At least there once a week!
First time , dined sat nite, 6.30pm it was pumping and loud. Sat straight down, the friendly staff tried to make you welcome and at home. Nice warm cosy place and the food was pretty much high quality.

Last night, when i got in the restaurant, the service was supreme and the staffs were very friendly. I ordered a soft shell crab, aburi sushi and the wafu steak with my favorite sapporo beer. When my wife and i bit through the wafu steak, the tenderness and the succulent grabbed me by the arm. It was so delicious that i nearly fell off my seat. Overall, it was successful and hopefully i shall come back to this place. Really Love it!!! I must encourage all to eat here and embrace the Japanese Culture
The food was great, the service even better. I ordered the second banquet option for myself plus two other people, there was so much food & variety, it's definately worth more than you pay for. Overall, very happy with this place :)
A Japanese restaurant that serves alright Japanese food. There's nothing wrong with the food, but there isn't anything special about it. Menu is quite extensive though, which is a plus. My Chicken Katsu Curry was okay; chicken was nicely fried and crispy. However, the potatoes tasted a bit off, but maybe it was just me.
However, the ambience and interior is quite nice and spacious. Service was not bad too.
Overall, I don't think I'll be back soon; had nicer Japanese fare at other restaurants.
I found myself craving Japanese again the other day. Something about having itchy feed is you seem to crave everything from the countries you want to visit (explaining my Koreapalooza last week, and my apparent Japanathon over the last month). I decided to get a bento to take into work for lunch while marking, filing and doing other fun things, and checked out what Sapporo had to offer. Not bad at all! Decent size and variety for its contents which were good quality and relatively authentic.
Been here plenty of times and always had a really good experience! The staff are friendly and happy to help if you need any recommendations. The food is delicious, especially the wagyu beef, and comes out in no time. Highly recommend!
I always enjoy eating here, even though it's a tad over priced.
Had dinner with an Japanese exchange lady last night and she really enjoyed having Japanese food that tasted almost traditional.
Mixed bag. I don't mind this restaurant, as in, I would go to it if I was raging hungry and it was open. Not sure I would book a dinner here.
My husband and I went randomly on Fathers Day at about 7pm with no booking, the place was packed and we got the last table. We knew that it would be slow service due to the place being packed, so we ordered an appetiser to cope with the waiting, which came out quickly. However, the service was unbelievably slow from then on and we were just so hungry. I really think it might have to do with the wait staff, I don't think they work in zones, it just seems chaotic. The food was nice, simple, but not creative or absolutely authentic Japanese but a lot of people don't care about that anyway.
I haven't gone back, but I have ordered takeaway once or twice since, and it's great. I really like the Beef Yakiniku!
Just try it for yourself, don't worry about the reviews, make up your own mind!
Great food. Some of these other reviews are hilarious.. We are new to the area and were so pleased when we found this excellent restaurant. The sushi always tastes amazing. The eggplant is delicious. Beancurd is great. Beef tataki was fantastic. Four of us dined here and were absolutely stuffed after only spending $30 each. We have now had the pleasure of dining here multiple times and have never had an issue with the service. It is more than adequate for the price you pay. I highly recommend eating here if you are looking for a fantastic cheap eat.
Used to be great, not sure what's happening the last time I went back last week its not as good anymore. Pity
Wonderful!. Really great place to go for a cheap eat. Everything is fresh and tastes great!
The service isn't wonderful, and the establishment is usually pretty cold - so keep that in mind (bring a jacket)
But overall, definitely worth it!
Amazing food at this restaurant! Their sushi is so fresh and their seafood udon noodle dish was absolutely delicious with all the flavours together! Great prices and great service too!
Sushi boat!. Went there after a friend recommended it, got the sushi boat, I thought the serving was a bit small and wanted to order a few more dishes, however we were both full after finishing it! the daifuku was also very good, love the black sesame ice cream that accompanied it, very strong black sesame flavour!
next time would love to try the soft shell crab.
The sushi boat looks fantastic and the soft shell crab would have to be the best thing on the menu! Great place!
Brilliant. Go there at least twice a month. :)
One of my favourites! Generous servings of delicious, fresh food. Always beautifully presented. Service can be lacking at times, but the food more than makes up for it!
Fabulous !. My husband is Japanese and we live in Mitcham so we were very excited when Sapporo opened. We are always a bit sceptical about going to Japanese restaurants because they are often not genuine or the ones that are, are over priced. I'm delighted to say that, not only does Sapporo have the genuine Japanese taste for most things, it is also reasonably priced compared to other Japanese restaurants. The sushi boat is amazing ! The fish is very fresh and satisfies that "got to have sushi craving" that I get every now and then. My husbands eyes light up when I suggest we go there and the kids love it too and always order the obento box. I can't recommend it highly enough. One day we went to another Japanese restaurant nearby just to compare and we were so disappointed. Definitely try this restaurant !
Hidden gem. Went here with my boyfriends for dinner after my housemate recommended it. Both had entree and mains; he takoyaki balls and seafood bento and me soy grilled eggplant and beef bulgogi. We also had some chilled sake and green tea to accompany it. Both of us enjoyed our meals immensely and he even said we'd definitely have to come back again (and being a city slicker who doesn't usually venture very far from the city, that's saying something!)
The second time I came here was for lunch with my housemate and we both got the marawase (mixed sushi, sashimi, nigiri) for ~$17. Not only was there a heap of food for that price but it came presented in a boat! We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and were stuffed when we left. Staff were reasonably attentive however we had to attract their attention a couple of times and it took a little while to get the bill.
Definitely is my go-to place for local Japanese food.
Situated in the most unlikely place is this little gem! Open late with amazing food it is perfect! I had sushi and a sizzling seafood plate with fresh ingredients. Absolutely amazing! I will be back for sure!
13 Aug update: Ā This continues to be the Japanese we gauge other Japanese restaurants by. Ā Reliably fresh food and friendly service, it's our 'go to' for sushi and sashimi. Ā We especially love and return for: Ā The Mariawase at lunch with the simple miso, any time of day: the gyoza, 'The Boat' (ok, that's our name for it), real name: Delux House Special, Tuna Tataki (that garlicky soy dressing with the perfect fish - oh gosh!), Beef Curry Rice, Tatsuta Age, Tempura Mariawase, Gyutan and Harumaki and Miso. Ā
Their Japanese tea is just lovely!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Yummy. We often come here midweek and eat early. It opens at 5.30pm which is great with little ones. We also call this place the 'Japanese Train Restaurant' as, if you choose a table near the big windows you can watch the trains go past - great for the children.
Hardly a visit goes by where we don't order 'The Boat' a huge amount of delicious options such as sushi, oysters, seaweed salad etc. They gyoza are delicious and the tatsuta age (fried chicken) never fails to disappoint.
Great value Japanese food in the suburbs.
110%. This place is one of my FAVORITES! The food is outstanding!
I always get the wafu steak, it never disappoints....ever!
The price is very reasonable, service is good but the food just speaks for itself!
I remember the first time i went to Sapporo and i really wasn't too sure of it, but my-my was i pleasently surprised!
Lovely for lunch. My husband and I often come here for lunch. It can be packed on a Friday & Saturday night but is very quiet at lunchtime. The Sushi boats are great and good fun if you have extra guests. The sushi is very fresh and tasty. I love the deep fried spicy squid tentacles, they are lovely and cruncy with very tender squid. It would be nice for the gluten intolerant if they had an accurate list of gluten free menu items, but apart from that it is fantastic Japanese!
Great food friendly staff and fantastic value. Best in town
Good Food. Been to Sapporo a number fo times and the food is great...recommend Sashimi and the Seafood Ramen Soup. Good for kids as well.
The service can be inconsistent though when they serve the mains...each time they have not arrived at once for the whole table.
Nice food, great atmosphere. The food is fresh and tasty. Best of all byo wine, no corkage loved the bento box and squid balls
Nice. We have been here twice, we like the food. Not much ambience, quiet place.
Awesome Japanese food. Highly recommended. Cheap to!
Fantastic Japanese restaurant, highly recommended!
Great food, especially the sushi n sashimi house special and the tempura. Top marks for presentation and service. A good find in the suburbs!
Sushi boat is beautifully presented and delicious. Great quality food, and good service with a smile!
Great service. Brilliant food. Good pricing. This is our new favorite restaurant.
AMAZING! best Japanese restaurant in the eastern suburbs.. :)
