We just adore this place! The staff are always so kind and welcoming and the food is always outstanding. The samosa chaat is our weekly staple - come back each week just for that sweet and warm yoghurt magic.
I have enjoyed going to Indian Star for the past 10 years. It has never failed to please even takeaway is good by the time we get it home. We live about 20 minutes away.
Highly recommend it. Service was great.
We have been frequenting Indian Star for years now. Wonderful delicious food, utterly beautiful ambience, it's our go to when entertaining guests or wanting a quiet night out. Impresses everytime. Even those who were not keen on trying Indian cuisine, request to be taken here again after trying it the once, every time. We love this place. Thanks again for another top experience last night, also the table service, just perfect as it is always.
We love this place. Great food, reliable service - first class. It's been our regular favourite for many years now.
Yummy and authentic Indian food. The best so far in Melbourne.
Delicious! Lovely staff and great service - will definitely be back :)
Phenomenal food! Ordered via app - Very generous servings and the taste....just wow! Highly recommended
I have been going to Indian Star regularly for over 8 years! I have NEVER had a bad meal! Perfection every time! By far the best Indian in Victoria! Well done Indian Star
Excellent place! Yumi food, friendly service, beautiful Indian decorations. Have been going there for many years!
very tasty food
real indian touch
i tried goat curry and that was delicious
The place one must visit to witness the real authenticity of Indian food, which is prepared and served to the perfection. I love Indian Star and recommend it to the others, and I assure the visit will be the most remembering.
Always a delight to go there. It's been a year since we were there last for my daughters birthday but the manager remembered us!
We regularly dine at the Indian Star. The food is very good and always excellent service.
Probably one of the best kept secrets in Melbourne. Loved the naans. 🖒
Ordered via Ubereats. Yummy food and generous portions. Food arrived promptly and appeared freshly made. Only slight criticism was that the pakoras were very salty! We still ate them :-)
I love coming here, such lovely, warm, comfy and welcoming ambience, great food and the wait staff is friendly. Still great after all these years.
We’ve been going to Indian star for ~20 years. Never a bad meal. But in those 20 years we somehow have never tried the vegetable manchurian! We’ve missed out - this is amazing. Probably the best veggie meal I’ve had. We went with two vegetarians/vegans and agree this is the business! Rest of the starters were equally great - never disappoints and quality of the food means you always leave content and at peace with your choices. Recommend the madras as well as the butter chicken, which despite attempts to change, our youngest always has to have the butter chicken! We had two new guest with us and both loved the food. No doubt it’s been a challenge getting thru this pandemic. If your looking at where to go now that restrictions have lifted do yourself a favour and go to the Indian Star. A local legend that continues to deliver outstanding food with great service!
3.5 star for me. It was a table of 5 for us, we ordered a variety of dishes to share. Most of the food was tasty, the lamb chops very tender, prawn masala and butter chicken very rich. Paneer spinach was good too. I’m not a big fan of Indian food in general- it’s too heavy for my taste. While I enjoyed my meal, I felt very thirsty afterwards.
The service was strange- considering how the restaurant has been there for 30+ years - (a respectable feat for sure!) the staff don’t seem to anticipate diners need very well. We were having a lovely conversation with one dish served and the waitress would interrupt us several times to ask if we would like the dish distributed to our plates. We said no thanks and they came back and asked the same thing 2-3 times in a span of 10 minutes. When we ordered desserts, we told them we were sharing and to provide us with individual dishes. They forgot to do it first time, so we remind them again, then they bring out dishes and no spoons so we sat there waiting while the ice cream melts. There are several other examples but not wanting to type an essay here.
For the location, service standard and serving size, I find the price a little high. We had 20% discount with Zomato gold so the price was acceptable for me, but I’m not sure if the restaurant attracted me enough to return at full price. Also, to have one or two dish alone without variety I would find the meal way too heavy.
When I showed the manager I’ve paid the 20% via the app, he said to me reproachingly why I did that as he would lose another 5%. I told him I was with Zomato gold right from the start, if he was expecting us to pay him direct by passing the app why didn’t he tell me when we asked for the bill? After that he returned and pressured me to write a review on Zomato and Google.
The exterior didn’t look inviting but the decor inside was lovely. Be careful not to wear any delicate clothing there as the smell stays on my clothes well after I left.
Overall a good place to visit if you like Indian food.
We love Indian food but when we want the best we make the trip to Indian Star
How good is the food here, authentic as it is, it’s topped with great and cozy interiors plus the staff makes you feel at home! Love it
We tried this place for the first time yesterday on our wedding anniversary and now i will recommend this to everyone who
Is looking for a fine dine Indian restaurant. Best indian food in Melbourne, amazing service, beautiful decor!! A must try place!!

Was craving for some Indian food and saw this recommendation on Zomato.Another plus is that you get to avail Zomato gold on food here.
The interiors are decorated well with Indian artefacts and antique pieces. The owner of the restaurant happened to be cooking in the restaurant that day so we were lucky to have some delicious dishes.
We had the Chicken Tikka masala, Butter tandoor rotis and Lamb Biryani. They also serve you papad and a mint chutney while you wait for the food to be served.
The Chicken Tikka was cooked well, the flavours were strong and rich, just how we liked it. The serving was just right for 2 people. We enjoyed the rotis. They were served hot from the kitchen and were not stretchy and chewy like at some restaurants. The Lamb biryani was a good dish, although we missed seeing the different layers of a typical biryani, this was mixed and served in a small dish.
All in all, a good place to try out if you feel like having Indian food in the area, :)
One of my favorites. It is a solid indian restaurant. Probably the best in the area. I love the food and the venue. The service is amazing too, very friedly and attentive
Very friendly staff, great food, sumptuous
Heard about this place from a friend. We made a 6pm reservation and went there one evening. The ambience is really good! Good Indian vibes with light Indian music. The service was good too! We ordered onion bajji, chicken resmi kebab, chicken Manchuria, paneer starter, chicken biryani, 3 varieties of naan, prawn masala aloo matar curry and gulab jamun. The chicken biryani , naan , gulab jamun and prawn masala were the best! Overall the food was good. Even got a zomato gold 1+1 here! ( My only dissatisfaction was about the fact that they charged 4$ each for raita and mint chutney which came with the starters and we weren’t even told about it by the waitress. She simply asked if we wanted raita/mint chutney with starters but nothing about the charge was mentioned!).
Our family have known Shanu and his team for well over 10 years. Without a doubt, they always produce such vibrant and flavoursome dishes bringing exotic spices of India to Melbourne. You can be guaranteed to have your taste buds fully satisfied from the first spoonful of whichever cuisine you choose. The ambience in the restaurant is beautiful making the dining experience so unique. The team are always so warm and friendly making every dining experience memorable and welcoming. You won’t be disappointed!
This amazing beautiful restaurant is actually a 5 star cuisine family owned restaurant who are also 5 star chefs with more than 40 years experience, politicians have eaten here and invited the owner to Parliament in Canberra in order to honor him for the amazing food that he makes in his restaurant, i have been eating their fine cuisine for nearly 30 years and can without a doubt say that no other Indian restaurant has the high standard and taste of this establishment, every single thing on the menu is pure perfection and so affordable, an absolute gem and I can see why they have won so many awards as a result of it, dine in for an authentic Indian experience or order from their busy take away, you will never have to wait long as this amazing team know how to run a restaurant perfectly, i wish I could eat here everyday as does my family, we love the family and all the staff here, they are the absolute best !
Very nice setting. Very nice food. Very tender. Not to spice. but had good flavours. Service was also friendly. Car parking was good at the rear. The chef came over for a chat. All good.
We were invited to Indian Star last night which straight off the bat was extremely visually impressive. The interior is jam packed with treasures collected over their 35 years of service as a family run business and paired with the traditional music, offers plenty of atmosphere.
The food itself was equally impressive and we chose to order the banquet so we could sample a broad variety of their offerings. This is a great option as the menu is extensive and the choices difficult. We started with some really vibrant and beautifully plated entrees including samosas and onion bhajia as well as the sizzling tandoori chicken and burrah kebab. These were all extremely flavoursome and we delighted in pairing them with utterly delicious house made chutneys.
Our four curries for the main included a chicken, lamb, beef and prawn dish all with different sauces which is a fabulous way to try a cross section of dishes. My favourite was the prawn masala which is controversial as I do love butter chicken which is also included on the banquet.
These were accompanied by the yummiest of fluffy garlic naans and some saffron rice. We ended the meal with a refreshing pistachio kulfi which was a really lovely light way to finish. We will certainly be back
Beautiful food must try each and every item was very good friendly stuff vani was very good . We tried lamb chops was just amazing and must try item
Amazing service, delicious foods. Garlic naan was light and soft, and the korma and biriyani had generous amount of meat. Would highly recommend!
Overall delicious food. Soft fluffy naans and delicious curry. Just that the briyani is slightly too soggy for my liking.
Food came out super quick. We highly recommend getting butter chicken with saffron rice and garlic naan. Butter chicken was cooked perfectly - tender and moist, the sauce was not too sweet and flavourful, perfect to dip your naan in.
I’ve been to many Indian restaurants around Melbourne, even some of the fine dining restaurants such as Atta and Tonka. Indian star really gives a run for your money. The food and service here is excellent, flavours are very balanced and there was great consistency of quality throughout all dishes.
Incredible first Indian experience
Recently visited Indian star for family dinner, the restaurant had a traditional style ambience. We ordered few main dishes which was recommended to us by chef himself, that taste was very authentic! We also ordered Garlic breads as sides to go with the dishes, which was really delicious. Indian star is one of the best Indian restaurants in the west, I have visited so far.
My family and I go here frequently. The food is always fresh and the staff are always accommodating to your needs. For great tasting authentic Indian food you can't go past Indian star. Tried the samosa chat this time around which was amazing.
Been wanting to come here since we've moved to nearby suburbs but forgotten about this restaurant until we see it in Zomato Gold. Finally we managed to come here for dinner and we love it. The service was friendly. Environment is good and authentic. We've ordered a mango lassi, masala tea, cheese and garlic naan, lamb vindoloo, fish curry and saffron rice. Everything was delicious and satisfying. Especially love the lamb vindoloo as it's so soft and tender. Naan also flavorful. Happy with our experience here. Definitely I will choose to come back again. Good location as there are few car parks around the corner.
Extremely tasty and fresh food. Fantastic service. Great ambiance. They have just refurbished. We have been going here for last 3years when ever we go out for Indian food because of consistency of quality. My 2 teenager sons love this place. Well priced.
Indian star is my local Indian restaurant! Their food is delicious and authentic. So many delicious Indian flavours. Recently they went above and beyond for me. I ordered through Uber eats and when my order was picked up the driver cancelled the order (totally not the fault of Indian star) the beautiful people at Indian star remade my food and then the owner delivered the food to my door! He even gave me a complementary Chutney. He was so apologetic and lovely even though the Uber eats situation was totally out of his control. He really went above and beyond for me and I am so grateful! I highly recommend this wonderful and authentic Indian dining experience!
This has been a long-time local favourite restaurant of mine. Everytime I come to Indian Star, I can rest assured I know I am going to get great service, a welcoming atmosphere and food that is equally delicious as it is aromatic, well-presented and of the best quality. I love nearly everything on the menu, but my all time go-to dish is the beef vindaloo with a side of saffron rice and garlic naan. If you can't handle heat, maybe give the vindaloo a miss! But personally, it's hot enough for me to know the spice is there, but does not overpower the overall depth of flavour of the dish.
Other dishes I would recommend are: chicken tikka, balti chicken malai and the daal maharani. In terms of drinks, the mango lassi is so creamy it's almost a dessert in itself!
The only thing that stops me from giving it 5 stars is the price points for the serving sizes you get. But be assured that the flavour they manage to pack into all their food is so worth giving this place a visit!!
Never disappointed.
The Aloo Mutter is to die for ... especially when the kitchen satisfies your starch fetish and consistently adds potato for you with no surcharge.
Veg biryani is always perfect and naan to die for.
We moved to Ascot Vale and this Indian restaurant was a gem. It took me 10 visits to write this review, don't want to be overwhelmed with this place. Its a nice fine dining experience with great service and food. Bhindi 2 pyaz is a must try with desert gajar halwa is to be missed. Non veg chicken Madras dish is also worth try. Moone ponds vellly has a hidden gem.
This place is perfect for the indian food lover they serve you one of the best indian food out there.the main course was very tasty and service was also very fast, must try place for everyone.
Good food, full of flavours. 2 different outlets, one for dine in and second for takeaway
But a little expensive than other places. Overall, 9 out of 10 for this restaurant
It’s no surprise Indian Star has won so many awards over the years. Their refined approach and traditional, home-made items offers patrons an excellent introduction into Indian cuisine that’s bound to satisfy.
And for those with a slightly lower tolerance of spice and chilli, they can of course tone the heat right down while still holding true to their traditional heritage.
I tried many different dishes for dining and takeaway all of them soo delicious and really its worth to try ,all the staff were amazing ......👍
Well what can I say,,, I’ve eaten Indian food all around the world from the tamarind of Mayfair to the Taj Mahal in India, and I’ve eaten in the best restaurants, including the, Culinary Flight at Burj Al Arab, in Dubai , and please Believe me when I say,, the food and service in this place is every bit as good as the ones with the big names,,and as for the negative comments, I can only Presume they must of left ther taste buds at home or they are use too cheap food,, 10/10 thank you very much guys for a lovely evening,,
Oh god there butter chicken was just amazing!!! Little bit pricey though considering sizes, but everyone there had a smile on there face so felt very warm and welcoming
I feel as though many locals overlook this place because it's hard to believe that a really really good Indian restaurant can be found in Moonee Ponds. Well, this place is one of my favourite places to go to with my girlfriend or my Mum. Order a Banquet. Best experience; value and variety.
Delicious authentic Indian food, tandoori plate was the best one I've had in Melbourne! Curries had so much flavour and again were the best I've ever tasted! Mango kulfi was delicious. Friendly staff and nice decor! Thanks for a great night!! We'll be back soon!
Busy Place serving good food !
we were table of 8 ordered the Banquet as recommended by the waitress. WOW so much food, full of flavour. The place is super busy so i am glad we made a booking. can wait to try other items from the menu

Great quality food !
Great service !
and a great selection.
highly recommend
First time trying indian & really liked it. Tried the Butter Chicken, Tandoori Platter with the Garlic Naan bread......YUM!!! Loved the atmosphere and service with a smile. I'll definitely be going back.
I drive by almost every day. So it's about time I went it. Super nice and plenty of room inside.
Got a chill vibe to it.
Food was full or flavour and it's a pretty decent serving too. Wasn't a huge fan of their roti or naan though.

Delightful from the moment you walk in. Lovely warm feeling on entry with lovely staff that cater for your every need. The food was so tasty and very authentic. The only thing I thought was missing was a big serving of share rice otherwise a wonderful evening. Romantic setting with really comfortable seating with cushions. I will go back
Amazing food and quality. Staff is always on point and very courteous.
Food is Delish and I'm actually still missing it after leaving Australia
Best indian food i have ever tasted, fast service and superb customer service! Will be coming back!! The butter chicken was so tasty food was hot akd fresh
I used to travel around this restaurant a lot as it is located in the main road and prominently visible over the busy intersection, but never had time to pay a visit, but one day I did while returning back home from Highpoint shopping center after a movie.
As it was a weekday evening, we were lucky enough to get a street parking. We entered un announced, I mean without prior booking. They could accommodate us easily as they had ample seating, but for weekends I suggest you book a table.
Waitress welcomed us with a big smile and showed our table. We ordered lite as quick as possible since we were hungry. During our wait time I started to notice the ambiance which was very very good. Real historic architecture, good effort there. Clean and spacious table. What I can say that is it is a fine dine restaurant. Food portion were sufficient and very unique to other Indian restaurants. Curries were rich and tasty. I felt this is just a little bit priced over the items but should be fine to dine here once in a month or two.
Would definitely visit again to try out other dishes in the menu.
When you walk in, the decor really separates the outside and the inside vibes. Dining area was welcoming and decorated quite exotically. Our server was articulate and provided one of the best experiences I've had for a very long time.
Banquets are a great deal which comes with a few delicious entrees such as tandoori chicken and shish kebab. Followed by 4 different curries to share. This was accompanied by rice and naan bread, which was very filling. The naan bread was great, cooked fresh and not greasy unlike the usual takeaway place.
Bloody awesome and will definitely be back to try other dishes!
Really quick, efficient service. Food is very good. Chicken saag is my favourite and one of the best around. Been here twice and will definitely be back.
I've been through a few Indian restos but this is, by far, the best there is. The butter chicken and the samosa chat was delicious! They really deserved those awards they got.
I've been dining at Indian Star for 20 years and for good reason; you will simply not find any other authentic Indian food anywhere else, other than in New Delhi, India.
Having spent much time abroad overseas and interstate in Australia with my job, I've experienced many Indian Restaurants in my quest to find the ultimate experience and Indian Star simply is the best of the best. The restaurant has won many awards for this reason.
But it's not only the food that makes this great restaurant stand out from the crowd; it's ambience, mood, comfort and great service all go hand in hand.
The restaurant is a family run business and you can see the family pride in all dishes in which they are happy to cater for most dietary requirements and spice to your preferred level.
With an easy accessible location and parking to further make your experience hassle free is an added bonus.
If you don't experience this you haven't experienced Indian food; it's that simple.
I just keep coming back to this wonderful restaurant. The food and service is consistently excellent from the pappadams to the many curry and tandoori dishes. You even get a choice of nan bread - garlic is my favourite. The ambience is authentic Indian with pictures, statues and other trinkets reflecting the origin of the menu. With comfortable seating, including sofas scattered around the perimeter, the dining experience is enhanced. Service is efficient and friendly and the fact that the restaurant was quite busy even on a Tuesday night speaks for itself! Parking is conveniently located behind the restaurant and it's free.
We have been frequenting Indian Star for many years. The food is incredible. Melbourne has only one other place that can compete with the actual food quality although this place has an incredible ambience that lacks at the other. Just ask the owners/family about the artifacts that adorn the main room, rich in history and tradition. Take away aspect is seperate to the eat in restaurant which adds to the warmth and intimacy with attentive but never over the top service. Best Naan and tandoori platters, curries to die for. Decent wine list too. We take guests here all the time and they always request returning when they visit. This place changes the minds of those who have been reluctant to try Indian cuisine into fans. Everytime.
Also this place is worth way more than they charge for the overall experience.
Thanks again guys, we will be back again as always :)
E: Having been multiple times prior, I can definitely say Indian Star really is a star for Indian cuisine.
Food: Ordered the Samosa Chat for entree, and the butter chicken, garlic naan for two and saffron rice to share (all pictured). Mate, the food was absolutely EXQUISITE, in terms of taste and value. Not only was every serve packed to the absolute brim, we were showered in authentic flavours and freshness. My friend and I were silent for some of the meal due to the sheer enjoyment of the deliciousness. The garlic naan and saffron rice were so soft and fresh, butter chicken was creamy and the chefs were extremely generous with the quantity of chicken we received. Overall, one of the best tasting meals I've had in so long.
Service: The service was undoubtably some of the best restaurant service I have received in a good while. Upon arriving, we were greeted with super friendly and smiley staff to begin with. We were seated at a pre-pared table complete with complimentary starters. When ordering the entree of vegetable samosas, the lovely waitress immediately recommended we ordered them with sauces and yogurts and this was definitely a great addition (pictured). Throughout the evening, we were attended to by two waiters/waitresses who were super friendly and understanding when we made a mess of the saffron rice. Upon leaving, we were invited to come back again as well as a suggestion of what to order next time we order. Will definitely be returning just based on last nights service.
Food: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Value: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5
I had the Chicken Saag and Fish Madras Curry take away, both were exceptionally delicious with also very tender meat. I've been feasting on them for two days now. The people are lovely too.
Rarely do you find great service and value for money coming hand in hand. My partner and I got the banquet b option. We almost rolled out of the restaurant and left with 3 full containers for lunch tomorrow. I recommend checking it out. We can't wait to go again.
So i am not usually this keen on leaving a review for any restaurant but Indian star is truly a star in its own right.
1. service with a smile
2. busy restaurant
3. award galore... seriously just see the wall
4. food is to die for... especially the goat curry
we had the Tandoori platter with raita followed by
Butter chicken
goats curry
rice and naan
great job guys
Some of the best Indian food in the area. The service is always impeccable and the banquets are great value.
The lamb saag, the tandoori platter, the naan bread are amongst my favourites. But really everything is super delicious!
Tried the chicken curry, palak paneer, vegetable jalfrezi and yellow dal tadka. Food was simply amazing. For breads we ordered garlic naan and lacha parantha - one of the best garlic naans i had ever.
Place was clean with beautiful interiors with a few interesting Indian antique objects.
Would visit again for sure.
Great food, friendly service .. had my 35th Bday bash here
place was buzzing. we had the set menu B which was awesome spread of food. would highly recommend this place for good quality indian food with a great decor and great menu.
Fantastic food at a reasonable price. We are a family of 5 with 3 kids under 11 and we love the social side of enjoy great shared food. We frequent this restaurant at least once a month over the last 3 years and still cant get enough.
We'd had home delivery from here which was good enough to make the effort to dine in. Delicious! Don't let the rather garish exterior of the building put you off. Inside awaits comfortable chairs, tastefully themed decor, proper table linen and friendly service. The Vegetarian and I shared the samosa chat, followed by super-tender and tasty lamb Korma for me and kadhai paneer for him. Garlic and cheese naan was heavenly. Looking forward to our next visit!
Hands down the best Indian food in Melbourne! We have been coming here for Indian food for the past 6 years and have never had a disappointment. Not only is the food consistently good but the service is friendly and the food is prepared expediently. I recommend the lamb vindaloo and chicken rogan josh. The tandoori is also excellent. Well done Indian Star- keep up the great food!
Come hungry. Because you’ll want to eat. A lot. We started with the Tandoori Platter and honestly that was enough for a shared meal (the spices and flair from the tandoor oven were perfect, just add rice and naan) but then we tried the Chicken Makhani. Flavorful, just the right balance of tomato and spice, buttery goodness. Lamb Vindaloo was next, one of the best Vindaloo’s I’ve ever had – a perfectly nuanced sauce.
Served with rice and naan, raita on the side, this was one of the best Indian meals I’ve had outside London. I’m a foodie and a snob for great food. We just don’t get Indian cuisine this good in the States.
Can’t wait to try Indian Star again!
Restaurant would be perfect for couples and families alike - very pretty inside, and the service was exceptional.
Yes... There are lots of Indian restaurants in the Melbourne area, but this place really raised the bar on flavor!
Wow! We were blown away! The taste of their Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Makhani were so flavorful. (And I cannot forget to mention the Raita and Naan...)
We generally try and keep dinner light, and yet ended up finishing up both of these curries... Using the Naan to soak up the rest of the sauces, of course.
As far as the rest of our stay in Melbourne, we seriously debated about returning for another meal... Why settle for something that may not be as wonderful? But in the end, decided to try other food that Melbourne has to offer.
I would definitely recommend this place for anyone going to Melbourne!
Indian star is a lovely place to have Indian food whether it be a couples date or dinner with a group of friends. I have been here twice and would recommend getting a banquet for more of a variety to try from.
The butter chicken, garlic naan & the mango lassi is a must! I absolutely love the mango lassi here- it's not too sweet or concentrated in comparison to other places I've had them at.
The venue is clean and has a fancy feel to it and the service is friendly- recommended.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and excellent customer
service. I have eaten there with my family (young children) and as a group of
adults only. They cater for any size group with ease. The children were spoilt
and loved the food on offer. It was a great relief to eat out with minimal
stress. I have also attended without my children. It is a wonderful place for a
great night out. Good food, amazing drinks and a location close to movies or
pubs. Easily the best Indian Restaurant in Melbourne!
The tandoori chicken was delicious! It was well marinaded, freshly prepared and succulent! This was even though it was a takeover order and consumed 40 minutes after it was picked up. The navratan kurma too was just perfect! Mildly spiced and very fresh. This place is a keeper for delicious Indian. Will certainly frequent it going forward!
