Review Dumpling House - Moonee Ponds

life
This place brings back fond memories of the simply decked out restaurant with the yummiest tastiest best value Chinese food of the 70's ! Lovely staff, super quick service and delicious dishes . We all over ate, but still could not finish all the dishes and the host offered us take away containers. Great place to take kids. We had the honey soy chicken, honey chicken, bok hoy with garlic, chicken corn soup, wonton soup, soup dumplings, pork fried dumplings, fried wontons, special fried rice - all 10 out of 10. The wonton soup was my favourite !!

Pros: - Great value. - Large portion sizes. - Loved the Satay Beef & Rice dish! Have ordered this since and will continue to do so! :) - Good dumplings Cons: - No Amex - Broken front door almost impossible to close - My chicken & corn soup came out after the rest of the food / mains. - Chicken and corn soup had no flavour (Pro: at least it was only $2.50 as a lunch special) Overall, very happy and will be coming back for more! :)

Eggplant dish was decent, kung pao chicken didnt have much flavor, dumplings were terrible.. a bit pricey for what it is.

You need to try eating here. I thought its not worth it but when the food has been served on our table, my god its so huge. Staffs are good they always smile even the cooks. It a simple chinese restaurant. Small and clean.

Excellent cheap eats, with high-quality food fresh and tasty this venue is always a family favourite of ours. The meals are delivered quickly after ordered and they are of excellent proportion. The menu is quite extensive with the regular favourite of pan fried or steamed dumplings. During our last visit we reminded of the faulty front door that does not close automatically. Every time a new patron would come in cold breeze of the evening would come through the front door onto the back of our necks, requiring us to get up and manually shut the door multiple times through the night. We did ask the waiter if the heater could be turned on and after a few times in asking it was obliged. The venue is small but we still manage to have a party of eight and enjoy ourselves. Plenty of free parking can be found down stairs under the Moonee Ponds shopping centre. There is also takeaway and eftpos available. You can even dial ahead and pre-order your takeaway.

Ordered a fried rice, and two stir-fries and it’s INCREDIBLE. Deceptively simple food but lip-smackingly delicious. I think their attention to details and choice of fresh ingredients made the food really tasty and healthy. The place is also super clean with friendly attentive staff! Will definitely come often now we have found this little gem!

Value for money couldn’t be any better! Food is so good, my partner and I come here at least twice a month. Place is always kept clean and the staff are extremely friendly.

This place is a gem. Best Xiao long bao in the area. The chicken dumpling wonton soup is also a standout.

My score 3.5 stars. J and I had lunch here on Mon 17th June.

Woman who served us was pleasant, water was brought to the table for us. A small down to earth café (which we like). The menu on Zomato is a bit out of date price-wise.

Pan fried vego dumplings ($11 for 12) – thick skins were quite rustic, but we liked them. Strong 5-spice and other spice? flavour, greens a bit earthy but overall, interesting!

Chicken and salty fish fried rice ($13.50) – we asked for less chicken and more yummy salty fish (the nice waiter told us the salty fish had a strong impact and checked if that was still what we wanted – a nice touch). We confirmed the order, and the result ending up being a good blend - an enormous serve too (we took a huge TA container home for dinner)..

Spicy king prawns and veg w rice ($15 lunch special) – fairly big prawns, moist and tasty. Plenty of choy sum (was good – not overcooked), medium carrot, small amount of broccoli. Large serve of rice was nicely cooked and had some egg in it. The chilli spice came from the tomato flavoured sauce – quite spicy, a bit acidic, not sweet at all. J liked it more than me, I thought it was ok. It got a bit samey after a while, but was nice enough when you got rice, greens and sauce together.

Might go back to try something else on the menu…

After reading the reviews of how good the food was I decided to come here for dumplings. They were not good. The pan fried dumpling skin was way too thick and chewy. The steamed dumplings were okay. I wouldn’t recommend or come back.

Been coming here for the past 4 years and might I say, it’s a box ticker ✅ the steam pork dumplings are a great compliment to the chilli beef on rice, which in itself is like Santa coming down the chimney with a bag full of gifts 🎅 Always a pleasant experience being greeted by the staff. An absolute must for any Asian cuisine lover.

Judging from the store front and basic interior, it doesn't seem like much but wait until you try their food. Their Shanghai beef noodles is one of the best I've had and wouldn't hesitare to recommend it. The steam pork juicy bao was also enjoyable. Wasn't too impressed with the pan fried pork dumplings as the entire dumpling was deep fried making the wrap hard and chewy.
This local restaurant is bang for your buck and offer great attentive service.

This place was very busy. And why not? Really affordable tasty food. Byo option here. Not just wine but saw someone brought in beer. Duck was great, crispy and moist not dry.

I had high hopes due to the great reviews online though found our meals quite bland and disappointing. I ordered the beef black bean, usually you can’t go wrong! And my partner ordered combination vegetable which I could not taste the garlic at all.

The fried rice had carrot, small shrimp and spring onion, it did not taste fried and I would have liked it to contain some more veggies like peas? It filled our belly and we had enough for two dinners so servings are generous but based on the food we had I would not return.

For a place called dumpling house the dumplings were subpar, very doughy in texture and lacking in flavour.

The pluses were the service and that the place was clean and food came fast!

We were passing by the neighbourhood and decided to venture into finding dumplings. This place delivered on flavour, above standard dumplings, and we have tried many. We ordered the fresh ginger n pork, and the chicken, veg, mushroom. Both which are a rare find were outstanding. Friendly service and chilled ambient.

Really good spot to get some cheap decent quality food. Vegetarian and the pork dumplings are easily the best on the menu. Been here many times as Moonee Ponds is where I work. Great value and very big portions

Lived in the area for just under a year and we usually go to I Love Dumplings in Flemington to get our fix. But we wanted to try somewhere different. Why not the local?

A serve of the pan fried juicy Bao: They were alright, but a little let down as they tasted like a slightly better dim sim.

Combination Vegetable in Garlic sauce: The serving was enormous and we ended up having to take about half of it home, no worries at all.

Sweet And Sour Pork: Our number one favourite from our visit, super tasty and a good portion size, really loved it.

Won Ton in peanut chilli spice: Interesting Won Tons, a bit different to what I've usually had, the sauce was awesome but the won ton wrappers had a bit of a doughy flavour to them.

Overall pretty good, would definitely get the sweet and sour pork again but I Love Dumplings is still our all time favourite.

We're here about once a week. I absolutely love this place. Authentic Chinese food and value for money. Best dish to try is the pan fried dumplings. The fried rice is a very generous serve and would probably be enough for 3 people. I once went there with 5 adults and 2 children and the bill was $56!

On the outside, it looks like your simple, average Chinese restaurant. Because that was the mindset I had when i decided to go here when all the other stores were closed, but I was dead wrong. Though the place itself looks like your usual Chinese joint, the food on the other hand is on another level.

Absolutely delicious food and so cheap. The service is great and food came out quick. It’s a tiny place so the atmosphere isn’t that great and appealing but the food is so delicious it won’t bother you. Massive servings!

A much needed restaurant for the area. Lovely dumplings and great value for money. Have been to this place many times now for both eat in and take away and have always been very satisfied.

Great little place. We eat there nearly every week. I've tried almost the entire menu now and have found only a few dishes I didn't enjoy. Great value, authentic style dishes and friendly staff.

Don't be spooked by the schlock shopfont. Great dumplings at giveaway prices. You can also try things like crispy skin chicken which are Chinatown-worthy. Go around the corner to The Valley Cellar Door for a bottle of BYO.

This is a place where we go quite frequently. The quality of food comparing the cost and quantity is really more than justified. The spicy chicken and rice is the best thing that I like. The taste is very vibrant and the price for the dumplings are also quite reasonable. Overall, this place is a recommended place.

Quick service and amazing dumplings! The honey chicken is also very nice and generous. Staff are very friendly and the prices are very cheap

Underrated, amazing dumplings! A little gem in Moonee Ponds. Maybe a good thing it hasn't been discovered by the masses yet. Looking forward to exploring the menu further - just wish they delivered!

Best dumplings outside Chinatown. Lots of other great dished on the menu. Fast friendly service. Can't go wrong here. Fantastic for a quick meal.

Good basic Won Ton soup, plenty of asian greens,
Excellent customer service, I was there just before opening time, I was ushered in and served
I will return

Reliable, quick & cheap dumplings.
We love getting the steam pork juicy bao (pictured) & the pan fried chicken/veg/mushroom dumplings (also pictured)- a good, filling meal for under $20!
The place doesn't look like much, but you will find it has a busy eat in & take away trade.
These dumplings won't be the best you've ever had but worth a try nonetheless.

Really delicious, honest dumplings! Have tried the vegetarian and beef several times and both have been very good. Also tried the spring onion pancake which was delicious, maybe a little greasy.

We popped in tonight to try something away from Keilor Rd and weren't disappointed! We started with chicken spring rolls, tasty but a tiny bit oily, pan fried pork dumplings simply yum and steamed prawn and chicken dumplings which were also yum! We then shared a special fried rice which was huge and really tasty, salt & pepper prawns tasty and the batter not too heavy, sizzling pepper beef, enjoyed them all and will be back!
Good option for takeaway dumplings! When we went here they were quick to take our order and let us know the expected wait time. The restaurant itself was rather quiet but very well presented and clean. My friend and I ordered pan fried pork dumplings & they were large and nicely flavoured. Not the nicest dumplings I have ever had, but we're definitely nice and they were generous in the amount of sauce they gave with the take away!

Great takeaway place! Dumplings were generous in serving and cheap in price, but without skimping on the flavour or quality! Large dumplings too which was great, excellent value for money! Ordered the pork and chicken vegetable and mushroom dumplings and was very happy! Bit of a language barrier issue with ordering on the phone, but other than that very happy with the experience!

For us, disappointment. We only had the dumplings and from other reviews I'm sure the place is fine. However the dumplings we had all had very thick and chewy outer noodle shells. I liked the flavour of the pork dumplings but really had no idea I was eating the chicken and prawn dumplings as our other dish. The chilli sauce was good but possibly too mild and too little.

Lovely service and yummy dumplings...can't really ask for much more! Would be good to try other things on the menu but always hard to go past dumplings! Great go to lunch amongst the myriad of choice in the area

Tucked away in a little shop in Moonee Ponds, Dumpling House was dead when we walked in. We were a little apprehensive about eating here, given Moonee Ponds isn't known for Chinese food. My worries were unfounded, however, given how delicious the dumplings were. I would go so far to say they had the best pan fried dumplings I've had since I can remember.

We ordered a serve of boiled chicken, veg & mushroom dumplings, a served of pan fried pork and braised eggplant. The chicken dumplings had a generous and very flavoursome filling, and a thin, slippery skin. Dipped in some vinegar and chilli, it was hard to stop. The fried pork dumplings had a crisp brown shell and a juicy pork filling which was incredibly moreish. I concentrated on eating as many of these as I could while my dining companions enjoyed the boiled dumplings.

The eggplant dish was very oily - completely unnecessary, given the lovely flavour of the sauce. The eggplant was lovely and soft, studded with little surprises of edmame beans, still alive with crunch.

Next time, I'll stick to the dumplings and maybe order 5 plates of them.

Have been here more than 4 times now, it's so good to finally have a dumpling place in moonee!!!! It's also BYO with a cheap corkage fee which I dont remember haha, the staff are always super friendly and helpful, the place always clean and the food always tasty and fresh!! Love the chinese broccoli in garlic sauce!

The best place in Moonee Ponds to get yourself heaps of amazing dumplings and spring rolls, so cheap and lovely service. I haven't tried the mains yet but I definitely will!
Jennifer Renee
From the outside it appears to be like. any other Chinese restaurant. Bad decor, old furniture, rickety chairs. Then the dumplings tell a whole different story.

The dumplings however are amazing. Especially the boiled pork and juicy bao.

There's only a small selection of dumplings but all have been top notch.

They give the best take away chili sauce ever!

LOVE the sweet and sour pork and Shanghai fried noodles. The dumplings are delish as well. Always such polite staff and very attentive. Great place for a cheap and yummy meal.
