Review I Dream Of Sushi - Moonee Ponds

Shaun Bong
One of my favourite sushi spots - used to go there religiously (at least once a week). Everything is good there, the rolls and the nigiri. The quality of the ingredients are great and the rice is really nice especially compared to the franchises like Sushi Sushi. Tastes a lot more fresh. Only reason why I stopped going was because it was getting a little expensive for me.

It’s amazing! I have had the best dumplings that I’ve ever tried my whole life there! The service was great! The place is very clean

I Dream of Sushi, my favourite shop to buy lunch on Saturday, usually 2 California (Sushi) Rolls which are wrapped in toasted Nori, how it should be. The actual Sushi 🍣 is very fresh and tasty😋. Goyza with Gohan (white cooked rice) is also a delight. All in all an excellent eat in or take away shop, staffed by very cheerful and happy staff who definitely have my full endorsement 👍🙏

Has this business changed ownership? Had Teriyaki chicken bento for lunch recently and ate in the restaurant. It was served in a cardboard box, what happened to plates? It was not very nice at all, in fact it ended up in the bin. It used to be so good!!!

Amazing authentic japanese food! We ordered the bento which serves a variety of healthy components and sushi was literally something you want to dream for! A very tiny shop but serves excellent food prepared by heartwarming japanese themselves..a cosy place to eat in but if you're by yourself or with a company it should be fine..highly recommend this place which serves authentic Japanese food.

do love the people who work here, they speak in Japanese and the vibe did make you feel like you’re in Japan. food was served pretty quick, the sushi is authentic sushi style. do love it !

Best sushi bar ever!!!!!! It's a small little restaurant which you will mistake for a cafe at first glance. This place is operated by Japanese so you'll be getting authentic items. Typical of Japanese food joints, the menu is not extensive but it's enough for you to come back time and time again. The tuna and salmon us fresh, sweet and chewy. Rolls are large. And best of all; easy on the pocket!

I love their sushi! The rice and vinegar used at a good balance. One of the best I have had in Melbourne!
Kassi Skerget
Best Sashimi l have had in years ...I have been there 4 times and consistent quality of the Tuna and salmon . Lovely staff , a little limited English but l think my thumbs up gesture on thanking and complimenting the food was acknowledged

Great chicken karaage don. Light batter, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Fast and friendly service, great value. ごちそうさまでした。

Cute little sushi place. If u eat in they cut up your sushi rolls too! They have a variety of different sushi rolls, i got the fried mushroom, eggplant miso and spicy salmon. Cannot wait to try their bowls, everything looks and smells so fresh and delicious!

Went there twice. Really enjoyed the Unagi eel, soft, creamy and well seasoned. The salmon salad was salty and unami. All round great experience but with limited seating

Crispy Chicken Bento was dope. Wait staff were super friendly. Decided to write a review while I remember how much I enjoyed my chicken and assortment of battered vegetables etc. They also deliver as I’ve just discovered. Hoping to get some food tonight... 😊🥳

Deserves a 4.5/5.

My family and I were on Puckle St, and we were looking for something to eat. Sushi rolls are easy for us because we all love Japanese food. We love good Japanese food. My wife is Japanese, I’ve been to Japan 21 times, and even my 4 year old daughter has been there 5 times! We found “I Dream of Sushi” on the Zomato app.

The sushi rolls were very good. As usual, the seaweed was too soft to be good, authentic sushi. However, by sushi roll standards, the rolls were excellent.

Service needs work. We were served quickly and politely, but their attitudes were very cold.

my favourite bento box! not like a traditional bento but everything is flavoursome and complements each other well. never disappointed when i come here and it’s my go-to for good quality, affordable japanese food

I walked past this cute little Japanese restaurant and decided to come in for a hand roll. I just wanted something quick and to settle my grumbling stomach as I had dinner plans but needed a quick filler before then.

Staff were lovely and there was a good range of hand rolls on offer, some had sold out as I was there late Saturday afternoon.

My crispy salmon was really good and I wanted to order so much more but knew I would get too full before my dinner plans. I will most certainly be back to try their menu!
Ryan Helliwell
cant believe they have 4 star...sushi was not that fresh and meat was dry.
One of the Japanese lady who seems like manager or owner was very rude to customers and over the phone as well. expected to be more nice customer service but turned out to be so bad.
Trickyniky1
For months I have been willing to try this low-key suburban restaurant after hearing ravenous reviews. And did it live up to the my expectations! The menu is great, the fish is fresh and the staff are absolutely delightful. Highly recommend!

Rarely is there quality sushi with all the take-away sushi places around, but this little tucked-away cafe offers just that. The Maki Rolls and Sashimi we ordered were well-prepared and well-presented. The salmon portion was also relatively fatty and quite fresh which was delicious.

The cafe is quite small but there’s enough room to sit comfortably and is quite cozy. The service is good as well. Overall, I recommend this place if you’re around the area for lunch.
Lorli
This place describes how I would feel at times lol. It’s not everyday that you come cross quality nigiri. A simple clean tidy cafe. Both the hotate and salmon nigiri I got for takeaways were fresh & silken.
Goodhearted
I Dream of Sushi is a cute little Japanese restaurant with a seperate vegan menu, conveniently situated opposite the Moonee Ponds train station.

• I • dream • of • Sushi • The name says it all doesn’t it... who the hell doesn’t dream of sushi! This hidden gem, is the treasure you need to find. Constantly making fresh sushi, either to take away or made to order, the sushi literally melts in your mouth, I kid you not, my mouth is watering just reminiscing about eating it. If you’re not a fan of sushi then (you must be crazy) defiantly try the teriyaki mayo don, so cheap yet so filling and such great quality!! Services is just incredible, the lovely ladies that work there always have a massive smile on there face, and price is great for the serving size!!!

I am quite fussy for food in general and super picky when it comes to Japanese food since I am Japanese and found not many Japanese restaurant in Melbourne can satisfy my fussy taste buds, however, this place is a winner. They nicely present true art of subtlety which is the core of Japanese culture and cuisine. I had bento, scallop sushi and a couple of nori rolls. Grilled salmon with plum and sweet soy sauce melted in my mouth, crunchy fried mixed vegetables tasted hint of ginger to make a difference, texture of fresh plump scallop sushi was just pleasure. To my surprise, these mouth-watering dishes are generously priced (only $15 for bento which comes with 2 vege dish, 1 main with steamed rice and pickles!). Nori rolls here costs a bit more but they make with less rice and more filling, so it is fair. When it is not busy, they can roll fresh ones upon your request as well. Their food appears to me sitting in the middle of the traditional and the creative modern fusion - it is a little bit different and interesting but not going too far - it is very well balanced. This little hidden gem with friendly and lovely staff is tiny yet cozy. I love their selection of health conscious drinks in the fridge, too. We can hardly get creative, delicious and healthy Japanese food with quality anywhere else in Melbourne within the price range this place offers. I live in Fitzroy North, but am happy to travel anytime again for their reasonably priced beautiful food. If you live in western suburbs, if you like sushi or Japanese food, it is worth trying!!

Best sushi & sashimi in Melbourne!! Very fresh and great quality. I always go there when I feel like sushi! I also love their Bento of the day. It is generous serve and very tasty! Highly recommended!!!

Nice place for a quick Vegan snack, I been here a couple of times already. The staff is always polite and professional. The have good Vegan options. Is not the best rice rice. But for the price you pay is more than good.
ForForkSteak
Great little spot located across the road from Moonee Ponds station. Really good spot to get either takeaway sushi or to dine in. Although not many seats some would say it’s cosy. Great nigiri and very good quality with a lot of great vegan options. Recommend
Simply Eat
I highly rate this place
Its run by some nice and genuine Japanese staff members
They make some of the best sushi in Moonee ponds .

The prices are slightly higher than your average Chinese run Japanese takeaway, but I think it's worth it for the authentic meals.

The Bento Box is good value !

Fresh and delicious sushi - love the spicy raw tuna! Hot food is very tasty, generous servings at a reasonable price. It's hard to find a good sushi place on the run, I Dream of Sushi is a definite recommendation to anyone in the area or passing through!
Green Gourmet Giraffe
I really want to return and try other dishes but I loved the Tofu Don and the Bento so much that I want to eat them over and over. It will be hard to branch out even if the soba noodles and gyoza are calling my name. The staff are lovely and the cafe is a pleasant place to stop and eat. And don't forget to admire the cute little sushi cartoons around the place. They will make you leave with a smile.
Jonathan Ong
aburi scallop was good. sushi don was ok - the pieces were more like off cuts (which is fine) but when you pay $19 for a bowl you would expect better quality pieces

I Dream of Sushi that tastes just as good as the Sashimi our taste buds were blessed with tonight. Keeping this review small (just like the amount of seats available in this tiny sushi outlet), in summary, the Sashimi was so fresh that we could assume they fished the salmon straight out of the pond out back. Service was the quickest we've EVER received our food, however be cautious that you actually receive the number of pieces advertised on the menu as we received 4 salmon/avo rolls instead of 8. This was quickly resolved and the staff quickly whipped up another 4. Amazing little treasure for tasty, fresh sushi, but if you're looking for a fancy sushi date, we would suggest opting for somewhere nicer.

Food: 5/5
Service: 3/5
Ambience: 2.5/5
Value: 3/5

Overall: 3.5/5

Absolutely love this place! Best sushi in Melbourne!!!! All there produce is so fresh and everything they have to eat is so delicious. I love the salmon nigiri it’s so well made! Also the rolls are delicious and are sooo fresh! Also they have really good gyozas as well which tops it off so nicely! The staff are also so sweet😍! So happy I live so close!

$13.50 for a filling bowl of Chicken Karaage Don? Sign me up! I ordered the karaage whilst my girlfriend ordered the Teri Mayo Don. Both were delicious and we left feeling very full. The value is amazing here! Everything is cheaper than most Japanese places and still has high quality.

Our go to for an easy spot of Japanese in MoPo. Simple and satisfying mix of Japanese dishes. Always hits the spot just right. It's better than any other fast food or take away options.
Tatamagouche
The food, staff and imported beer is as good and authentic as you would find down the hidden laneways of Tokyo! It's only a humble setting but the flavours are anything but. Food comes out quickly and is very fairly priced.

Yummy Japanese food and funky style. Nice staff. We had karaage, maki rolls, nigiri platter and prawn and pork dumplings. Delicious food at a good price.

Good value, sashimi is really fresh. I ordered a Bento of the day which is $14.5 for 2 veg dishes, 1 main, rice and miso soup. Pretty good but the fried salmon looks like they have been reused from sashimi...not sure but still taste really good. The restaurant is small and cute but would be crowded at lunch time.

I love this cute little place. The food portion is very generous indeed and certainly value for money, $14.50 for a bento set. Of course it is tasty too. They do quite a fair bit of takeaway too, probably also because there isnt that much sitting area. For me the only minor downside is the ventilation. One of my dining pet peeves is the food smell that lingers on my clothes. Nevertheless, it is something I will return to again and again and again!

Easily one of the best sushi places I have been to. Always fresh beyond expectations for a small sushi joint.

I'm always a fan of the Bento - however the last couple of times I've have the crispy chicken bento the chicken hasn't been so crispy as oily. Still delicious but perhaps needs a name change.

The gyoza is delish, the service is always lovely as all members of staff welcome you no matter what they're doing and will all say goodbye as well.

If you do order a bento make sure you're not in any rish as it is all made to order so there will be a wait of at least 10 minutes. Definitely worth it though.

Those who know me know how much I love sushi. So it's going to take something super special to impress me.

I dream of sushi have some great choices for you sushi lovers. Staff are really nice. Not a huge venue so more of a take away place for those looking to visit.

Top 3 Sushi in Melbourne. I came in at 7:54 and they close at 8PM and asked if there was any sushi rolls left and they kindly said they could make a selection of rolls that were still available. I ordered 5 rolls and was happy to wait 5-10mins. This is one of a few occasions I have been to a place that is about to close and they have served me with a smile on there face and not just served though made rolls per the menu from scratch. Aside from the great service, the menu is great! The rolls are fantastic and chicken and prawn dumplings with chestnuts, onion, ginger and soy will win any appetite. Can't recommended this place enough at lunch time and for dinner. Great friendly team, great location, great food. Definitely needs to be on a list for best Japanese somewhere on this planet. Definitely leaving you dreaming of sushi. ✌️😁

Every time I travel to Melbourne I make sure I visit this wonderful Sushi Shop. Definitely worth the trip from the CBD. Fresh and vibrant!

Really love this place. The prices are amazing, the staff are very nice and the portions are really good too. Food is very authentic. This is our favourite local Japanese place. Highly recommend and will be going back many more times.

Best fresh sushi in town! I love this little hidden gem. A variety of sushi and great menu. They even stock kombucha and fresh miso soup. Parking can be very difficult as there is only street parking mad close to the train line but you can park on puckle street. I always take away but dining in is a lovely experience.
Sarahannierule
Me and my sister love the sushi here, its great to have a place that has fresh good quality sushi which you know is being made there unlike mainstream sushi chains, I trust the food here and am a regular customer. The staff are always very friendly and lovely.
Athena Anasta
Love the quality, my personal favourite is the salmon sashimi and the California rolls, it's great and authentic and in my experience there is no other place like it! :)

Have been wanting to come here for a while and I finally had time so came in for a quick lunch. Everything is fresh, tasty and very reasonably priced. The staff are really friendly as well. Great little spot in Moonee Ponds. Definitely worth a visit!
Kiki
The sushi here is really fresh and really well made with interesting fillings. The staff are always really friendly. My favourite meal is the kakiyagi soba noodle soup (crunchy deep fried vege bunches with noodle soup). The bento box is great value too.

Good, authentic, honest Japanese food. Decent sized servings. So many Japanese restaurants here are carbon copies of each other, but not this one.

GOOD JAPANESE JOINT, AND GREAT TAKEAWAY ROLLS - Dream of Sushi is an unassuming Japanese restaurant located in front of the Mooney Ponds Train Station. It is a functional place but the food is worth a visit both for dine-in and take-away.

The bento tray is very healthy, and I liked everything on the plate. The stand-out to me were those green beans in sauce. Wonderful. The grilled salmon with plum sauce was very good in flavour but a grilled a bit too much and a bit dry.

Among the takeaway rolls I loved the ginger and chicken roll, and also the crispy salmon one, but I have also tried the zucchini and the eggplant rolls that they are very good, very resh, properly rolled, the seaweed very fresh as well, and packed with flavour.

I find their miso soup quite average.

The place is good-priced taking into account the freshness and quality of the food and the decent serving portions. The salmon was filleted and prepared when I arrived, and it was very fresh and good looking.

Service is matter of fact.

I'll be back.
Chocolate.Factory
Absolutely love I Dream of Sushi. Doesn't look like much from the tiny shop front, but definitely delivers in a big way on food and flavour. Really generous servings too, so best to visit with an empty tummy, huge appetite or both!

Luv luv luv it!
I wish I lived closer, I would be here every day! The food is amazing. Honestly. I downloaded Zomato purely so I could share.
If you haven't been yet, you're missing out. If you have, then you know what I mean. Sweet smiles, always! Authentic, delicious meals that I feel guilty eating coz it seems like fine dining at take-away prices. Must try the grilled salmon.

$14 bento and it comes with miso soup! Good sized too. My only complaint is that the tables inside are a bit low for a tall guy... so I guess its a pretty good place if that's all i can fault :)
Suitie
Excellent bento cooked to order with a good variety of tasty morsels beautifully presented on individual Japanese-designed ceramic plates/bowls. Dined here several times and great service every time. Bento portion size is on the larger size so good for those with an appetite (although I often struggle to finish and end up sharing!) Indoor and outdoor seating, small but interesting menu, and the bento main dish changes daily.

Love I dream of sushi Service great Foods fresh Ate there a few times now and order off the menu as well My new sushi place well done girls
My French Rituals
Love this cute Japanese place. Great miso soup, gyozas and sushi. I have had different types of sushi many times here and can never fault it. The female owners are lovely and make some sushi to order. I ordered an eel sushi for my husband once because they had ran out and it was amazing. So fresh and delicious! Love love this place!

Food is good - sushi isn't that fresh... Very soggy and chewy nori. Dons are good, gyoza is good, agedashi tofu is quite nice. The people that run this little restaurant and very sweet.

I think I have found my new local sushi place! I missed my train so I just popped in to get a snack but I will definitely be going back for my next sushi fix.
Andy Campbell
The sashimi don was delicious, real authentic Japanese food!

I was actually really surprised by this place! Just went in for a quick snack but ended up with some amazing sushi. I'll definitely be heading back for more.

The taste of Japan. Dear 'I dream Sushi',
Came back from a holiday to Japan with a desire for fresh and delicious sushi, and you sure did meet all my expectations. There is a good variety and ingredients and are ridiculously fresh, especially the raw salmon and tuna (my favourites!). They also don't skimp on these more expensive fillings, with large chunks of fresh fish throughout the whole roll, something you don't get if going to your average Sushi Sushi chains. The seaweed encasing the ingredients and plump grains of rice is never soggy, but slightly crisp- giving off an amazing nori aroma with each bite!
Have also tried a few rice bowls, with the chicken mayo as a personal favourite! Did i mention the large portions???
The service is fantastic as well, if they run out of a particular sushi you want, they'll gladly make it on the spot!
Please never change, 'I Dream Sushi'!
xoxo Sushi Lover

Great Japanese Food. This is a great find in Moonee Ponds - great for takeaway or a quick eat in meal. The vegetable gyoza are great as are the bentos. Definitely worth a try - rapidly becoming a favourite.

...I finally got to visit I Dream Of Sushi . Whenever I’ve been in the area, it’s been after they close so today I wasn’t going to miss this lunch opportunity! I’ve heard a few vegans saying how much they like I Dream Of Sushi.

Awesome food, great prices. I am definitely working this place into my rotation. You could easily spend twice as much and not get a meal as good as you would from I Dream Of Sushi! It is a must try.

Authentic Japanese food, great service, cute shop. My recommendations are basically everything I've eaten since discovering it... Ramen (Miso), salmon aburi (yum yum), tempura udon. I'm putting it out there.... Best ramen in Melbs. This place fulfills any craving for real Japanese food.

Restaurant quality food at cafe prices. I'm always a bit conflicted when I spill the goss on a local gem like this because then it gets really busy and selfishly I want to keep these secret places to myself - but it really is fabulous so you must visit. I've made two visits for reviewing purposes and both were great and confirmed my initial impression that the food here really is restaurant quality - but at cafe prices.

As noted by other reviewers, the space is small. When you walk in you see their display of ready-made sushi rolls. My recommendation is to overlook these, sit down and order something from the menu. As Consider The Sauce noted, and I agree, they probably only make the sushi rolls as it would be business suicide not to - especially when catering to the office workers who want a quick take away. And I'm sure the rolls are great. But the real gems are on the menu.

I have tried: tuna sashimi, agedashi tofu, teri-mayo don.

The tuna sashimi was fresh and everything sashimi should be. The accompanying soy sauce was appropriately light as to not dominate the delicate flavour of the tuna. The agedashi tofu was perfectly fried and not greasy at all. It came in a bowl with a generous amount of broth (light soy and shitake) which was delicious. Be sure to mix the broth well as the finely grated ginger settles at the bottom. The teri mayo don was essentially terriyaki chicken on rice, but done so very well. The chicken was tender, the sauce was perfectly balanced, there was no hint of oiliness, the rice was cooked perfectly, and the little garnishes (nori, kewpie mayo) just rounded it off perfectly.

This is a brilliant find in Moonee Ponds. Usually to get high quality Japanese food you need to go to a proper Japanese restaurant. But now you don't have to. Check out this little cafe and see for yourself. The signage is not up yet so it can be overlooked. It's across the road from the train station - look for the little blackboard on the footpath.

So Very Japanese. Beautiful, beautiful food prepared and offered by people who know what they are doing. The flavours were delicate and discrete and were balanced by the rice.

Being mainly a take away supplier, although there are a few chairs, the decor is dominated by the kitchen. It was a joy to watch our food being prepared and to note the high quality of the ingredients. My chicken was tender and fat free. To compliment this, all the decorations had been brought by the owner from Japan even the "Hello Kitty" that greeted you on entering was Japanese!

Very good value and highly recommended.

Amazing, amazing Japanese - will return asap!. Situated near the Moonee Ponds train station locals are exceptionally lucky to have such fresh, well made Japanese right on their doorstop or a quick pick up on the way to catch the train. The staff are charming. The food is made right in front of you - absolutely delicious and extremely well priced. We had the miso soup, gyoza (both kinds - pork or vege - are amazing) and the Teri Mayo Don and Karaage Don...more than enough food for 2 hungry adults and every mouthful amazing. Can't wait to return!
Wolfievelvet
THE BEST JAPANESE!! Will return ASAP. We are so happy to have this welcoming little place pop up in Moonee Ponds. No longer will we have to travel for delicious and authentic japanese food. A perfect and precise menu. We rang up for takeaways and when we picked up we found the staff delightful and very friendly. The food was just perfect. Will be recommending 'I dream of Sushi' to all our neighbours!! Thank you for the perfect experience!

The real deal.. What a nice surprise! Food is amazing. Made with real care in front of you. Recommend the Karaage Don (crispy chicken) and The Bento Box of the day. Our new lunch spot.

I Dream of Sushi is an authentic Japanese food and takeaway restaurant recently opened in Moonee Ponds.

As part of Bupa's best blog competition for 2015 I Dream of Sushi is Moonee Ponds newest sushi place in town. It is tiny and too close to the railway station. It is run by Japanese who not only do sushi but they also do Japanese meals such as soba and udon noodles. Nat Stockley said that it was a healthy Japanese place. But it was Consider the Sauce that recommended that I try this place. They do eat in and takeaway for train commuters I was greeted by a lovely waitress and when I saw that sashimi don was on the menu for $17, I thought that I got to have this. And so I did. It was easy to eat with a spoon as all the sashimi was diced. I loved the marinade, it was not too garlicky. I enjoyed eating the rice as well as it was the Australian rice that was used. but what would be nice is some avocado. And no boom gates outside (not that they can help it). It is too noisy. And there is not much seating but still it is a cozy place to relax or grab takeaway. Rating: 15/20 enjoyed the sushi but hate the noise outside.
