Review Basar - Moonee Ponds

Rouven Grossmann
Great little place to eat authentic Vietnamese food. Food, as well as coffee and tea, was freshly made. (Coffee glass could have been a little fuller) All other customers seemed to enjoy it too. Thumbs up!

The taste of the food is fine but I really question their hygiene and packing service, as I received a Pho with a died dry fly on it. Deliveroo originally didn’t want to refund me and only allowed an ONE TIME EXEMPTION to give me some credit for such a unacceptable experience

Banh mi is carelessly made. Same two banh mi ordered and one didn't have salad. Very meaty, not balanced with salad. Would be good if they asked if you wanted chilli.

Had a craving for noodles and found this place that serves pho. From the outside it looked very much like a take away place so my expectations were low, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the beef pho, slightly more expensive than what you'd pay but you won't be able to find anything cheaper locally. They used thinner noodle than most places and they were very soft and delicious. Lots of sauces available at the table and the soup was tasty and not too salty like most places. I got my noodle fix.

Beautiful flavours in the vegetarian pho broth, and love that the spring rolls come with a little lettuce wrap! All in all very fresh and good value.

Good experience. The food was so yummy and the staff were very helpful. Love the ambiance!!

Had prawn rice. Taste is good and oil was very subtle. Its definitely well made. Staff are friendly, and responsive.

Delicious pork belly with crackling Banh Mi. Rolls are soft with a crisp outside (but not too crisp that you can't bite through it). Good amount of ingredients without any overpowering tastes. Will definitely be back

Lovely staff with great food and a wide variety of options! So happy to have a place like this in Moonee ponds. I love the amount of vegetarian/vegan options available :) they are always happy to cater to dietry needs as I am vegan and my boyfriend has nut allergies! Highly recommend the curry but everything on the menu is great! Good pricing and awesome food

Really lovely fresh food. As a coeliac, it can be really difficult to eat out but they have a separate area for gluten free dishes. Really understanding, kind and accommodating staff too :)

Delicious food and healthy food. Julie, the owner is a local. Very passionate about food. We had a great chat. We will definitely be back.

Eaten here a couple of times now, the food is so fresh, great taste, great portion size. The people are friendly and service is prompt. The place is also very clean, a great addition to Puckle Street.

Went on opening day for lunch and will be certainly going back on hopefully a regular basis. We had a lovely warm and friendly welcome from all the staff. The food was very appetising and a lot to choose from. They need to number the tables as they mucked up my coffee order but all was resolved very quickly. Would recommend this restaurant and hope they do well.

Fantastic place. Food so fresh with authentic tastes of Vietnamese. Food reasonably priced, staff and service also fantastic. Will be back for sure and the takeaway is just as good and presentation awesome

The 'lunch box' option was amazing! Best value for money on puckle st! The pork sliders were unreal too! Can't wait to go back

Awesome authentic Vietnamese food and the great thing is that there's vegetarian on the menu. Love the art work and rustic look!

Great authentic Vietnamese food, freshly made. I will definitely be going back again.

Nice fresh food. Great selection of meals. Absolutely loved it.

Enjoyed the Banh mi here - lots of meat and good mix of veggies. Only downside is that the ventilation probably could be improved - overall the air inside seems a little oily. They do a good job though overall and it’s nice to have more Vietnamese spots in Moonee Ponds.

The modern and chic Vietnamese eatery with a twist on Puckle Street.

They do have a great variety on the menu and there is a really nice mural on the back wall.

We had the pho and the roast pork rice bowl, the flavours were quite fusion and the soup base for the pho was slightly bland. The rice bowls were okay but would have liked it to be a roast pork with a nice crackling but it was more of a bbq pork instead.

Lunch menu! The absolute best thing a restaurant has ever produced! I was craving soup base food as well as a banh mi and this restaurant let me satisfy my cravings without over ordering! So worth it!

So happy to find this place , very decent pho joint. Their noodle salad with Vietnamese meatballs are delish. The device is pretty fast , potion is standard tho the price is a bit more because of the location. In overall happy with everything 😍

Cravings for Vietnamese food today so we came here for lunch. The moment we stepped into the cafe, the smell of the meat hits us right away. Ordered Vietnamese coffee, smooth and flavorful but a bit too sweet due to condensed milk. Rice paper rolls with hoi sin sauce were yummy and refreshing because of the fresh crunchy vege. Grilled pork skewer was tender and delicious. Next is beef pho. It's delicious but I had better one in Richmond. Last was grilled pork rice. My hb said it's delicious but his complain was too many big chunky vege. We were so full and satisfied. Thumbs up 👍

Great place, chicken pho was amazing. Be sure to try the spring rolls. My partner had the Vietnamese pancake and could recommend more highly.

The best! Dine in or takeaway food is super tasty! Springs rolls were some of the best I’ve had! Baguettes delicious! Soup so good! Loved it all! Some of the best Vietnamese around! Thanks Ba Sar!

Food is quick. Table was dirty when we were seated. Vegan pho was good, soup was delicious however would have liked some mock meat in it. Noodles cooked well

I am a bit of a banh mi expert and usually $6 gets you an awesome one in Footscray. Walking past this place and noticing the $11 lunch special, it was hard to resist. We both ordered the banh mi, one with grilled lemongrass chicken and the other pork belly with crackling (extra $2.) The special is served with 2 spring rolls and we chose pork & taro and chicken & sweet potato. Firstly the presentation is beautiful and takes the humble banh mi to another level though flavour wise these promised plenty but were a tad average, just missing that amazing bread and strong flavours associated with a banh mi. The crunch of the crackling was nice but didn't get a strong lemongrass taste from the chicken. The spring rolls looked goid but again lacked flavour and crispness. Service wise very nice of the staff to split the rolls so we got half of each on our plates.
Connie
The beef pho and spring roll express lunch deal for $11 is so worth it 👌🏼

I had the chicken and sweet potato as well as pork and taro. I loved the taro soooooo much, it was one of the best spring rolls I’ve ever had.

Beef pho was also quite nice as well but I would love it if there was more beef.

I can not get enough of this place. Discovered recently when walking down Puckle street and has become our regular go to. The food is extremely fresh and the staff always very attentive. Can highly recommend the Chicken Bites, Wonton Noodle Soup and Chicken Pho.
Cathy
Place was super quiet lunch time but waited close to 20 mins for a not freshly cooked pork on rice. Told the check out person the egg needs to be well down because I am pregnant but it could not be more runny when i got it! Ended up having to get takeaway from the Chinese place across the street. Will never come back again
Ilovefood
Nice place food was OK we had the pork spring rolls, beef pho, and spicy beef noodle soup. The spicy beef noodle soup was the standout with good flavour, the beef pho broth lacked any real depth and was watery both soups did not have enough of the good bits maybe 5 bits of beef which were fatty and a very small amount of noodles this is surprising given in general the over generous nature of pho in melbourne and vietnam. Overall the pho is overpriced for what we received no issues paying the price if there was more beef and noodles and if the quality of beef was better. The other issue was that service was slow it took over 30 mins for entree to arrive and all up our lunch was close to 1.5 hrs for spring rolls and pho.
Deniz
Delicious! I had the vegetarian pho and it was so warm, hearty & flavourful - perfect for a cold Melbourne day. The broth had a really subtle but nice flavour to it, and the noodles were so soft and chewy. It was a pretty large portion, but I loved it so much that I didn’t even struggle to finish it. It was overall such a pleasant and enjoyable dish. Service is friendly enough and the venue is clean, sleek and modern. I would definitely like to visit again!

Was in here to have free pho along with my housemates. Two words: Delicious and Filling :)
The quantity of pho given was a lot considering that it was free. The servers were polite. The place was crowded and there was no place to sit that we ordered takeaway. I would definitely visit this place again for their hot pho on a cold winter day.
Deng
Even though the negative reviews, I decided to try the pho here.

Being Vietnamese, I have quite the standards for Vietnamese food. I have to say the pho was good and the ingredients were fresh. The broth was refreshing and I will definitely be going there again.

More Thai basil would nice :)

Worst place with the worst service. Waited 40mins just for skewers. Not authentic Vietnamese food. If you’re looking for westernised vietnamese food then this is the place you’re looking for
Like Eating
Had lunch here today expecting a quick bite before heading back to work. I was the first to order from our group of 3, the restaurant had 2 other groups in it at that time (4 people on one table and a mother and child on the other). The other 2 members of my group received their banh mi’s at least 10 minutes before me, when I asked at the counter 2 girls looked like they had no idea what was going on. One of the girls was leaning over another persons banh mi trying to work out which costumer it was for. Numerous customers who ordered after me were given their meals (both to eat in and to take away) I eventually had to ask for mine to be take away so I could eat in a meeting back at the office. My meal was really tasty but I’d be hesitant to go during lunch as the 40 minutes I allowed in the restaurant wasn’t enough.

Overall a great experience. Amazing authentic Vietnamese food and great service. Amazing Rice paper rolls and Vietnamese pancakes. Would definitely visit again and recommend it.

Amazing food and service. Wanted vegan & staff totally catered for me. A lot of veg options to choose from. Overall a very pleasant experience. Would definately visit & recommend.

Veggie spring rolls were chunky and awesome, the banh xeo pancake with roast pork belly and shrimps was nice although the size and amount of crispy overhanging pieces does not compare to richmond. Vietnamese chef in the back.

Ordered off the lunchbox menu. Didn’t get a great welcome when we walked in as we were looking at the lunchbox menu on the counter and a staff member came over and asked us if we wanted take away or to eat in. When we said we were eating in she then told us to sit down and they would serve us. I wanted to look at the lunch box menu though before sitting down which for some reason Is not on the tables. So we went to sit down only to find that there was food on the chairs at the table we had chosen. No problem as we just chose another table and waited for someone to acknowledge us...and waited...and waited. Finally after about 10 minutes someone came over and took our order. Food came out pretty quickly. We ordered crispy porkbelly Bahn mi and beef pho with spring rolls. The porkbelly Bahn mi was fatty, grisly and the crackle was inedible as it was so hard... ended up removing all the pork and eating the roll. Spring rolls were very good and enjoyed eating them. Now the beef pho... firstly it was a bit off putting seeing the girl pulling the raw meat apart before she put it in the bowl. When the pho came to the table it was luke warm. When I went to tell someone it was not hot they all just ignored me at the counter for a few minutes until I spoke. The girl that acknowledged me didn’t apologise and just went and got someone else and told her (the girl that was pulling apart the raw meat and I assume the one that made the soup). This girl then went to a big pot of soup on the stove lifted the lid and put her finger in it to see if it was hot! Unfortunately this wasn’t a good experience. This restaurant has the ability to be great but I feel there’s not enough supervision from management to oversee the quality of food and the lack of professionalism of the staff working on the tables and at the counter. Lots of competition in Moonee Ponds for a restaurant to succeed.

A vegan/vegetarian-friendly place to eat. Family recipes. Friendly hosts. I had the pho, tofu baguette, rice paper rolls and vermicelli noodle there, which were all amazing!

There are so many things to love about Vietnamese Food. Pho and Banh mi sandwiches are just some of my favorite things. I love the freshness the cuisine has to offer, exciting herbs, spices, and vegetables with almost any dish that you order.

I was excited when I saw this cafe style venue serving Vietnamese food on Puckle st, there is nothing very exciting on the street to eat, very happy with the new addition. I was impressed it looked extremely clean and the modern decor was a bonus.

What we ordered was delicious and I will be back to try other options on the menu. We ordered the Lemongrass chicken Bahn Mi, the bread was crisp, light and fresh. They did not skimp on the toppings and it was bursting with peanut and chili sauce flavors. Vegetarian Spring rolls looked more like a Chinese spring roll, but the taste is all that really matters. They were crispy perfection with a delicious filling, served with your standard Iceberg lettuce, mint leaves, and dipping sauce, very satisfying. I ordered the Chicken Wonton noodle soup. I don't eat pork and finding Wontons in Melbourne without Pork in them is like finding a needle in a hay stack. This was pure excitement as I do love Wontons. The broth was yum, just what the body was craving in the cold. In the soup steamed and fried Wontons with bock Choy and noodles. It had a great variation of texture, highly recommend.

The staff was fantastic they provided you everything you required without having to ask for a single thing. Very aware of customers needs. They were polite and friendly. The owner was also there working alongside her staff, very humble and was interested in customer satisfaction and feedback and just to make sure you enjoyed it. The only thing that I would have liked was the staff to make me aware of the lunch special. They have this listed at the front, however, when seated at the back it is out of sight. We ordered everything individually and if I had that option I would have opted for the special.

My 3 Key Pointers
• No need to head to Richmond, Footscray or Preston if you live in the area.
• Hard to find a Vietnamese restaurant that serves a Vegetarian Broth for pho soup, they have it.
• Bang for the buck, don't compare $4.50 Banh Mi from a takeaway bakery, there is definitely more love in these.

Excellent range of dishes in a very well designed menu. I especially like the lunchbox which is a nice sample of some classics. Have liked the taste of most dishes I've tried so far including: the classic pork roll, the congee, chicken curry, pho, calamari. Plan to eat my way through most of the menu - eventually. For a small restaurant, the menu is quite broad.
Really like the ambience of the place, much more relaxed (than other restaurants) but in a classy way.

Delicious, filling, fresh, clean, cheap, and cheerful. Oh... and the cutlery sits in the basket of a little bicycle on each table - cute! 😊

Went to Ba Sar for dinner and was blown away. Decor is fantastic and the staff are so friendly and helpful. We started with the spring rolls which were delicious. My partner had the chicken pho and I had the beef pho. Both were delicious and presented beautifully. The flavours and colours were great. They are licenced and the value for money is second to none. Will definitely be back.

I've been to Vietnam and I find it hard to find a place that had the same taste. I look no further than Ba Sar! The food is great quality and the flavours are like being back in Vietnam! I would highly recommend the Pho!

Great modern Vietnamese cuisine !!! Different to what I am used to !!! I go there nearly every weekend for a lunch. Food is fresh, prepared to order, full of flavours and colour. Service is quick and the owners lovely. The decor is superb - modern, clean so different... Awsome music !!! My personal favourite on the menue is the vegetarian pho and the tofu baguette !!! :D REALLY RECOMMENDED !!! Signed by fussy eater :)

The service and food was well worth the
Walk in the cold on a Saturday for lunch.
The Pho was full of flavour and more than enough to fill the hungry.

Delicious, delicately flavoured Vietnamese food. I had the spring rolls, rice paper rolls and chicken shared entree, followed by vegetable and tofu pho. This is not your usual Vietnamese food. The flavours are delicate and interesting. Nothing is overpowered by chilli - you can actually taste the chicken in the spring rolls and the slight vinegar note in the pho which was a wonderfully clear, no fat chicken broth with a hint of sweet and sour to it. The rice paper rolls were generously filled and the chicken was lightly fried - all entrees came with a selection of dipping sauces. Well done Ba Sar - not your average Vietnamese.

Went for lunch today. I picked up a bargain, $11 for a bowl of pho and 2 spring rolls.

The home made sweet chilli sauce for the spring rolls were absolutely delicious, as were the spring rolls themselves.

The pho was even better. Beautiful flavours , great hot chilli, very very fresh ingredients. Everything was really good, highly recommended.

We ordered the grilled pork ban mi and the pork & taro spring rolls. The grilled pork was pink, which I'm no down with (hello tape worms) but nevertheless delicious. The spring rolls were also great. Good price & flavours. Thank you
Jen
I went down there to pick up some lunch today. The service was friendly and welcoming and the lady who served me talked me through the menu. I chose the vegetarian Pho which was absolutely delicious! As I had takeaway they packaged up all the condiments in a separate bag for me which I thought was lovely as I like to add my own. Probably one of the best Pho I've had. I do think that their prices are perhaps a little high especially as Minh's and a couple of other popular Vietnamese places around are fairly cheaper. But I do understand that they're trying to create a trendy restaurant feel with prices to reflect. All in all very happy and I'll definitely be back to try more!

Fabulous Vietnamese café on Puckle street. I felt like a bit of everything so I tried the lunchbox. For $17 you get 2 spring rolls, a bowl of pho, 1/2 a banh mi, and coffee (or water) of your choice. I had the condensed milk coffee on ice and it was absolutely fantastic. The food was great too. The banh mi in particular was one of the best I had tried. Can't wait to return and work my way through the menu.
Jo
Awesome rice paper rolls! Always super fresh and tasty with a variety of fillings to chose from. New chicken rice dish is also very delicious. Can't wait for them to open up for dinner!

We had the beef pho, Banh mi (Vietnamese pork roll) and the kids pack. Pho was nice, wife liked the roll, my kid at the kids pack (picky eater). Clean place. My only gripe is that they seem to have reused their been sprout condiment for the pho, because it seems I had an old squeezed lime in amongst there.
James Hudson
Friendly service and great Vietnamese classics. The lunch special is a winner, particularly with the Vietnamese coffee. Highly recommended for lunch

Awesome Bahn Mi. Its great to see so many variations on the traditional Vietnamese pork roll that you don't seem to get at other alleged authentic Vietnamese outlets.
Something for everyone on every menu item, even vegetarian Pho that I was told is made with vegetable stock that you might find is chicken based elsewhere.
Too many different options for rice paper rolls I can't seem to find a favourite.
This restaurant is a breath of fresh air to Puckle street that only has ever had the standard Italian restaurant or franchise of the second.
SCN
Great fresh vietnamese food, good value for money. Would suggest they have order and table numbers for customers once they have ordered their food. It can get confusing at busy times.

About time puckle street got an awesome cafe like this one! Their vermicelli noodle salad was delicious!!! Great decor and reasonable prices.

Now, I am going to be upfront and say that I went to this place twice two days apart for lunch. Firstly, with a group of three, on the second occasion, solo. I want new places to succeed. I think that the bread rolls were good, similarly the rice paper rolls were pretty standard. Cost wise they were reasonable. Good decor, except for the mural of the 'Vietnamese' woman with no ears (stay on the food Fifi) I think that they need to work on the teething problems, a variety of fillings not available. Bun bo hue and pho average and on the expensive side for what is on offer. There are three places within 100m of each other, Vietnamese Baker up the road with bread rolls and Hung Vuong across the road with its noodle soups. I think Ba Sar might be popular with the Tax Office workers with their 4 hr lunch breaks, but I am not sure that it's a place with any definitive difference.
