Review Mio Dolce - Moonee Ponds

Shaun D'Monte
The display window @MioDolceCakes caught my eye walking past and had me drooling at the wonderful looking sweet creations. I settled on a couple of cannoli one filled with Italian custard and the other with ricotta. Both were crunchy on the outside and very tasty. Love the traditional ricotta version. I also got a mini profitterole stack with soft choux pastry filled with a rich Italian custard and coated in a lovely layer of chocolate. I really enjoyed this. Lastly, hard to go past the Toblerone cheesecake. Rich, chocolatey and delectable. A very naughty treat to enjoy during the day. #ItalianFood #cannoli #ricotta #Italiancustard #profitterole #Toblerone #cheesecake #sweettooth #dessert #foodcoma #foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd @zomatomelb

Unfortunately there isn't a massive selection of cakes. There are probably just a few that looks good. It also wasn't a good experience when I entered. I did ask for a specific cake to be selected on a tray but she didn't listen to my request. When I asked for the other selection she would question me on whether they are not the same. I just said they are the same cake, but one looked better than the other and I merely wanted the other one. I requested this specifically for a photo shoot but was met with a cold reaction. Afterwards I can tell I wasn't welcomed in the place anymore. So it would definitely have to be a 1 star experience. Generally it would take alot effort to make me feel unpleasant to be in a shop. This is one of them. I won't be returning here to make a purchase.

Very rude owner. Their cakes are not consistent they change the look of the cakes. I ordered Bacio cake and received a totally different looking cake. And they charged me through the roof. The owner was very rude about it and instead of explaining why they change the style to “the way he feels like it” in a nice manner, he was abrupt and almost wanted to pick a fight. Will never be going back and will definitely not be recommending this place to anyone. So many other cake shops with better customer service and value for money. Staff are inexperienced and don’t explain over the phone the cake styles and that they look different. Wouldn’t even give this place a 1 star but did so I could leave this review.

Great coffee and service. Excellent range of pastries.

Inexperienced staff don’t inform you that the cake Styles can change. I voiced my concern to the owner and his very rude response was “its how I want to decorate the outside, I’m a professional” I said to him I didn’t know they change the styles every time, he just said he doesn’t know. I’m very confused because obviously he does know and just can’t give me, the customer a proper explanation as to why I didn’t get the cake I ordered. He tried to blame me and say it’s because I didn’t send him a photo. Like I’m suppose to know how he runs his business? Very rude, unprofessional and don’t know how they are still in business. I have been there the last 3 times to get my cake and now this is my last. I will not be recommending Mio Dolce to my friends and family and those I have recommended to I will be asking them to reconsider. Had to give 1 star to write this review. Would give 0 stars if possible. Very disappointed.

I ordered a big strawberry cake and when I pick it up didn’t look nice at all. The strawberries were white and a few with the leafs on them. I asked if they can do something about it and the owner came out of the kitchen saying in a rude way that the cake is perfect and asking what do I want. He didn’t want to listen to me or anything. Apparently he had a bad day and I paid for that having and awful time arguing with him. Such a rude person! They show you a beautiful cake in the window and then is not the same nice looking when you pick it up. So disappointed! He finally cut the strawberries properly and sent it out again. I ended up crying because such bad experience that I had. You can't do anything the day before the party, I really needed the cake so I have to deal with this type of idiot! 😭 🤷‍♀️ I really don't recommend this place!

The vanilla slice was to die for. The pastry was flaky with a good crunch...made very recently. The custard cream filling was well flavoured and a perfect consistency throughout. One star deducted because I felt the Italian hot chocolate just missed the mark in flavour. Not bitter enough. You certainly won't be disappointed if you like a vanilla slice. Though I believe they called it a diplomatica.

Good value cakes, and what? What?! Nutella Baklava?!!

I love this place. The staff members are very kind, friendly and smiley and they make you smile with joy as they welcome you to this cafe. The pastries here are heavenly, an absolute privilege to chill here. The drinks are refreshing and good. The cakes are delicious, the cannolis displayed makes your mouth water and the little tarts and pastries are so cute and petit. Love this place.

$5 for a vanilla slice was a bit pricy (I've never broken the $5 mark before). Unfortunately, it was also one of the worst vanilla slices I've had. Completely tasteless, no vanilla, and the custard smelled sour and was hard on the exposed edges. The pastry bottom was soggy and yuck. Icing tasted ok, but it was nothing great.

Similar to the traditional European cake shops in Sydney road and Acland street this Moonee ponds version serves the area well. The cannoli is rich and crunchy and prices are very low compared to other places

The window display of cakes and pastries is enough to draw any sweet lover in with plenty to choose from. I had a couple of takeaway items which very lovingly packaged by the friendly lady who served me. The cannoli shell was perfectly crispy filled with a smooth chocolate custard. Definitely worth stopping by for your sweet treat fix.

Mio Dolce is a hidden gem in Moonee ponds for proper Italian cakes and pastries. They do an Italian hot chocolate which is to die for and not overly sweet. At the back you'll find homemade gelato/icecream. This is the best. Flavours always feature some kind of chocolate and vanilla but the texture is absolutely stunning. The fruit combinations are some of the best around.

If you're craving something sweet with your coffee head here!

Staff are always very friendly but be warned it can be hard to get a table at peak times.

Fantastic staff, cakes fresh. The head baker very accomodating, made birthday cake for my son based on picture I provided and it was amazing! Very very happy.

An Italian pasticceria is surely a wonderous thing. Even better, if the pasticceria is also a gelateria! Mio Dolce has some of the best value house-made gelati in Melbourne, and its large selection of cakes and pastries are at very reasonable prices. We especially loved the cannoli.

What an appalling experience

Please, if you serve up cakes ensure they are fresh. Purchased Greek baclava and kataifi cakes and needed a chainsaw to cut them!
Worst cakes I've had in Melbourne.
As the Greeks say....skata

Ordered a water, veggie pastie and a slice of spanakopita, $12.80

Both items look very appealing, started with the pastie and wasn't impressed at all with the filling. Too much carrot and it overpowered everything else, pastie not carrot cake. The pastry was nice.

The slice of spanak was ok, I had never tried this before and thought it would be similar to a pidé. It had a very different after taste, not to my liking but maybe to someone else's.

Sad to say I had to add ketchup to them both.

Large portion size, but a synthetic tasting custard. Slightly marzipan flavoured, but I can't put my finger on it. I noticed that they have changed their icing to a fondant since I last walked past. Maybe worth another sample?

Staff were friendly, and the bakery itself was immaculately clean when I was there. The prices are cheap, and there is a large array of sweet goods to choose from.
However, all cakes and slices are pre sliced. Though they're wrapped in plastic, they still dry out, and both my cake and my friends was drier than is ideal. I prefer it when bakeries cut your slice after you order, so that the moisture stays inside for as long as possible.

LOVELY PATISSERIE WITH GREAT VARIETY OF SWEETS - I could not let pass this place, because they have a wonderful colourful bright and fresh looking window populated by all classes of slices, cakes, petits fours, eclairs, sponge cakes mousse cakes, choux cakes, cheese cakes, and what is not.

I had four petits fours: two of the fruity ones (blueberry pf, and a orange, pineapple and strawberry pf) one orange mousse pf, and a pistachio and chocolate pf.

The pastry is lovely in tasty, thick and consistent and holds well the filling without crumbling, but it is not hard. The filling and toppings are very fresh and tasty and some of them very filling. My super-favourite one was the blueberry one, which was just perfect, but I enjoyed all of them.

They sell a good variety of traditional Italian sweets, macaroons and so many things to choose from that is just difficult not to find anything you like.

They also have a hot section, and sell pies, arancini, spanoplita pieces and other savoury stuff. I love savoury stuff, so I got a tomato pie and a bolognese (huge) arancini ball and they were quite nice.

Coffee is OK.

Ice-cream is OK.

I don't like their macaroons.

The place is a mostly a quick-sweet-fix place, with a small seating area inside and outside.

The staff are really welcoming and lovely always.

I will be back.

I am a believer of "try before buy". I was just passing by this shop with tempting display of yummy cakes so thought of trying it. As such I wanted to order a cake for my friend. So I thought of trying Black Forest and a Pink Lemington like cake which I think they call snow ball. I was surprised by the quality of cakes. I mean it's a small shop n honestly I didn't expected it to be so good. Anybody going here, Black Forest is not to miss. The bottom layer is full of cherries. The first bite itself is burst of yummy flavours. Coffee is average but cakes are a must.

They had the best price for gelato cones!. I'm always craving gelato, so even though it was a crap day, I jumped off the train home from work to get a cone here. I needed to swipe on at a Zone 1 station to work my Myki rort anyway, and I had just enough time to get a treat before the next train came. The gelato selection was small -- eight tubs, but it's made in-house, which is why I wanted to try Mio Dolce's. How spoilt are we these days, anyway? I'm whingeing about "only 8 flavours." The video store a few shops west has two dozen! Listen here whippersnappers, back when I was your age, the only flavours we had were chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, and a lot of times that was ice MILK, not gelato. Kids these days...

Anyway, the hazelnut and baci scoops I had were creamy, not too dense, mellow flavours, a bit of chunky stuff in there from the nuts and other add-ins. I like busy ice cream. The great thing about this place is the price of the cones -- $4 for a two-scooper! That's $1.50 less than the Trampoline chain, and half the price of Movenpick. I think I'll be doing the train-swindle jump-off here again. Especially for the baked goods. I was stocked up with sweet pastries at home when I was here, but there are all sorts of house-baked pasticcerie in the display cases that I can't wait to get my mouth around.

Got better. We have been coming to this place for years but the cakes were something of a hit and miss. It was closed for a long stint over Christmas and was re-opened recently. The cakes are now a bit more expensive than before (not in comparison to other stores though) but are amazing. The tiramisu used to be edible but is now up there with the best of them. I don't know if they have changed owner or the baker but the taste has changed a lot and for the better.

I ordered my wedding cake from here and I was BLOWN away!!! We had the marble mud cake and everyone was going crazy after their first bite. Will definitely be ordering my cakes from here. The coffee is great too. I recommend it.

I go to this place ALL the time. Usually just to grab a tray of goodies to take to afternoon tea. EVERYTHING is so yummy including the coffee.

Bought a cake for my sons birthday. I ordered a red velvet cake with white chocolate ganache. When I arrived home I discovered it was a chocolate covered cake. My son is allergic to chocolate. When I called the store the only solution they could offer was a refund. This happened 2 hours before the party. I was disgusted with their lack of empathy and service. It was their mistake and they did nothing to resolve the issue.

Had the Tiramisu and it was disgusting! You don't make tiramisu with mock cream! Don't offer products unless they're made properly.

Had sticky date pudding, canolli and a latte. Cake is good not mind blowing, latte is a bit hotter than my liking. Love the service. Will go back.
Gusto Dolce
Good coffee, more so the hot chocolate. It's the really stuff from Europe not the crap nestle powder some other places serve. Friendly service and wonderful food.

Anyway this place is a Italian cake shop in Moonee Ponds. Here they sell cannolis, fruit flans and other cakes. And if you don't want huge ones you can buy the smaller version and that's what I did.
