The food is delicious, fresh and a generous serving size.
I love fish tacos and the southern style fish tacos I had here did not disappoint!
Two of my friends shared the Chefs platter for two which looked amazing - so much variety.
Another bonus about Tommy Ruff’s is if you don’t finish your meal, they will gladly pack up the remaining food for you to take home.
Although there can be a wait for a table during busy times - it’s definitely worth it.

Drove down to the beach when Melbourne had some good whether and stopped by tommy ruff for lunch. I’ve heard mixed reviews but wanted to see for myself. We had a tackle pack and oysters to share. Some of the oysters were a little funky but the rest was great. Loved the calamari rings and the fish. Great spot and staff are so nice here.
Great food. We love fish and seafood and we are not disappointed at all. Decent portion and price is reasonable.
Service was fantastic and the food was fresh. Yes it's pricier than your average fish & chippery, but this is justified by the variety and quality of the food here.

We had the classic fish n chips with a side of calamari, dim sum and king prawn. The fish was nice not fishy, although it could’ve been more flakey and tender. The chips were nice and crunchy. The tartare sauce was quite bland though and could’ve been a bit more tart. The dim sum were overly salty unfortunately. However the calamari rings were very nice and not too chewy.
Overall, a decent place to drop by for fish and chips. Will probably try some of their specialty dishes in the future.
We just came for a quick bite. What a delicious bite it was. I could not convince my son not to have the Burger but luckily hd persisted. I got to try it, it was juicy and the bun just right. My tacos were just as good. The perfect amount of condiments. The service was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We will be back.

Amazing staff and very relaxed plus the food is amazing
delicious fish and chips! i had the aussie angler pack. so good. food that makes you happy when you eat it and also leaves you feeling good afterwards! i loved the atmosphere at this place, really relaxed and perfect place for us on this lovely summery day! i also tried the kiss of the mermaid cider, cos of the name! it was yum!! also i fell in love with the fishy water jugs as soon as i laid my eyes on it 😍
Fast and friendly service.Yummy seafood servings, great taste, fresh and delicious.The fish was crispy and not oily.Loved the Super salad which balances all the seafood which we happily devoured.Total damage $111 for 3pax.Very worth a repeat visit.Good place to bring your visitors.
Best sweet potato fries ever!! My grilled fish was a little dry, tried my FIL which was battered and was perfect. Will most definitely be back.
Oh my god. Bring your friends, family, pets, everyone. Tackle this enormous tower of seafood goodness because it was excellent. Every aspect of this tower was so delicious. It is not for the faint hearted, there is A LOT of food, so bring your appetite. The selection of fish and seafood were so fresh and cooked to order. Thinking about it makes my mouth water !!
Love this place it is our go-to fish and chips most fridays! The food has always been top quality, and at an affordable price. One big thing to call out is the customer service- I honestly believe the girls on the floor are the friendliest and most helpful waitresses I have ever come across (and we eat out a lot). Customer service is non existent these days, and it really makes all the difference in the world. Keep up the fantastic work, you guys are always a pleasure. Would highly recommend to everyone!

I love Tommy Ruff in Mordi! It's my go to fish and chips spot, in both Summer and Winter! I made two takeaway orders within a few days of each other so I'm uploading reviews on both orders in this one post.
The interior of the restaurant is so funky and nautical. I love everything from the netted lights to the fish water jugs! Such an awesome spot to sit and enjoy some food.
The seafood here is really fresh. All of the food is simple in its presentation but packs a punch with flavour. I ordered some takeaway, and even after I arrived home 10 minutes later, everything was hot and delicious (besides the poke bowl).
The poke bowl was very filling, it had a good amount of different ingredients to compliment the salmon including avocado, seaweed and cabbage. The sauce was creamy and tasty.
The calamari rings were crispy and well cooked. They were chewy which I loved!
On my second order, I had the grilled fish with sweet potato chips and super salad. The sweet potato chips are bomb! I loved the seasoning and they had a good crispiness to them. The fish was fresh and yummy. I really enjoyed the super salad, which was full of leaves, cabbage, quinoa and sweet, dried cranberries which I enjoy! The whole meal felt very fresh.
The staff are really lovely. I also love how they had a re-usable, branded bag for holding takeaway!
First five star. Tommy Ruff in Mordialloc is a clean restaurant with quite iconic design. It is a high quality & affordable place to have fresh sea food.
Fish tacos, fish & chips.. fish wings. It is great to have a place like this with high quality , flavoured food. And the sea is just 5 mins walk from the place.
It is always busy in the summer weekends. Need to wait at least an hour to get a seat. It is worthy.
Came for dinner and was very happy. All the staff are lovely and helpful. They made us some great cocktails. Refreshing to deal with such nice staff. The food was lovely. We shared some tacos - prawn and the southern style fish - salt and pepper calamari, small chips. Another friend had fish and chips and enjoyed it. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu.

Ordered the rod and reel combo and whiting battered fish with Greek salad
Classic fish and chips done perfect. The batter was perfectly crispy not too oily and the fish was fresh, firm and juicy. The prawns and scallops were similarly delicous. Chips are fried to perfect crispiness. Loved the hot sauce that was available adding the perfect tart element to counter the fried foods. Amazing to take to the beach or enjoy the ambience of the restaurant.
After researching what would be a reliable, highly rated, seafood dining place here to take my family o. Good Friday, I stumbled upon Tommy Ruff. I tried to make a booking earlier in the day but was advised that it was a walk-in system only. Upon arrival we were told that it would be 30-45mins wait for a table, thankfully it was only about 20mins in the end and it was worth the wait. The staff were friendly and patient and the food was reasonably priced and lived up to the expectations.
We had:
White bait - not as flavoursome and crispy as I expected but the aioli was a great accompaniment.
Salt n pepper calamari - nicely cooked with good flavour.
Fish wings - were tasty and crispy.
Crab claw burger - delicious
Grilled barramundi - crispy skin, moist, very fresh.
Battered orange roughy w salad n chips - really good overall except the batter was a bit too thick for my liking.
Overall, a great night out and we can’t wait to return to try the fish tacos n the rest of the menu!!

Ate at Tommy Ruff fish bar! Decided to try the new philly cheese steak they have available with the onion rings and also ordered some fish on the side and was delicious! Great vibes when in here and perfect place if your craving seafood! There fish is extremely fresh and tastes outstanding and not to mention there philly cheesesteak was unreal! Staff was also friendly! Definitely worth going too. I have now become a regular.

In all the suburbs on the mornington peninsula, I am still yet to find a place that does better fish and chips (gourmet style) better than Tommy Ruff. Their food is fresh, bright, colourful and packed with flavour. Customer service was impeccable, always feel like I'm being served by friends ive known for years. Fish tacos are always ordered by me.
Second time coming to Tommy Ruff in Mordialloc and although it’s a fair bit of drive, my boyfriend and I thought to make a pit stop here for some lunch after a relaxing day at hot springs before we head back home to Melbourne.
He got the Southern Fried Fish & Chips and as the lovely worker who helped us pick our dishes, described this one as the “KFC version of fish and chips” and it was absolutely delish! Even the chipotle mayo was so creamy and they were so generous with the portion - which is always a plus btw. I got the battered Barramundi with a side of chips and classic salad. Honestly you can’t go wrong with the classic salad and the Barramundi was cooked to absolute perfection that it was just so delicious, I could’ve honestly had more.
Long time customer due to the great food and usually great prices, but disappointing that the seafood platter has gone up in price again to $85!!
If you haven’t been to a Tommy rough fish bar you must try it. Generous portions and the staff are super friendly. I’ve been to Elsternwick and Mordialloc hands down Mordialloc is where it’s at.
The chefs platter for 2+ was to die for! I know it’s quite steep for price, but it’s expected as this is a seafood restaurant. I can’t fault the platter at all. The seafood was extremely fresh, the oysters were huge and was definitely to my liking, the taco was amazing, the burger was just magnificent, the grilled fish of the day just made this platter even more better.
Overall experience: A must Get!

My partner and I visited Tommy Ruff for lunch -
He had the Flake, some chips and a sinker burger and I tried the southern fried fish and chips.
The Sinker Burger was outstanding, I’m not usually a burger girl but I could easily see myself polishing one of these off.
The Flake was hot, fresh and crispy, and this was the same with my southern fried fish and chips, I only wish that there was a bit more salt in in the batter or that the sauce provided had some more zing.
The chips were average for both - I wish they were as special as the rest of our meal!
I also tried a calamari ring, if I had my time again I would’ve gone for these as my main.
All in all Tommy Ruffs was a good feed, partnered with some amazing service, some small salty additions would have made my 4 a 5.
Lunch on a beautiful Saturday with my partner. We shared a tacklebox for two paired with a bottled beer each.
This place lived up to its reputation. Amazing fish and chips - the seafood component the best. Prawn and scallops were perfect, fish great and the potato cakes and chips ok. Well priced, exciting menu, decent service (although the salad we ordered never came) and nice to be able to eat fish n chips in the shop.

I’ve driven past the hustle and bustle of Tommy Ruff many times and have heard only good things about this place so I decided to finally try it out!
I ordered the Poke Bowl and my partner ordered the Southern Style Fried Fish. Poke Bowl was delicious and the salmon tasted fresh however I thoroughly enjoyed my partners dish more than I did mine 😂. The southern style fried fish packed so much flavour!

I’ve been to the Tommy Ruff Mordi countless times and the service and food is consistently stellar. This time we wanted to eat at the beach due to the nice weather so we decided to do a phone order.
The staff member taking the phone order was clear and direct by repeating our order and letting us know accurate wait times! I ordered a Poké Bowl for a healthy and refreshing lunch and it exceeded my expectations. Was so amazing, all the ingredients were super fresh and the meal itself you could tell was made with care. Would highly recommend if you’re after a quick and delicious healthy meal! 😌😌
We came upon Tommy Ruff’s one summer evening, coming straight from the beach.
Waited about 30 minutes for a table, not too bad seeing as the queue was out the door.
Food came out fairly quick, ordered grilled and fried variations.. all very delicious, seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection.
Cannot fault anything at Tommy Ruffs, service friendly and attentive, my favourite were the pineapple fritters!
The Chefs Platter for 2+ is a must have. You get to taste a bit of everything and it is very fresh! The fish tacos were my favourite. Can easily feed 3+ as we struggled with 2 however for a full experience it's a must. Very good atmosphere with a system that texts you when your table is ready if a prior booking isn't made. Only downfall of the meal would be the chips which were quite standard and nothing special to compliment the seafood.
What's good: The food is suprisingly better than my expectation.
What's bad: Service needs to be improved, a waitress told me to wait for the table while there was empty one in front of me, and I waited for another 5 mins then they gave me another table, which was odd.
I can understand why this place has such good reviews. The salmon I had was so fresh and falling apart tender. Chips were standard chips and battered fish was very fresh too. Nice decor and friendly front of house. Good place to dine in Mordialloc
The fish wing is so testy and tender. The shrimps is so fresh and testy. However, the whole things is very greasy including the sauce. TarTar sauce and some fresh juice may be better for serve together.
The fish and chips here is absolutely amazing. Our waitress was friendly and very patient with us running through the menu and informing us of their specials.
Great portion size of the fish. It was fresh, flakey and the batter was light and crunchy. I love sweet potato fries so I had to grab this when I saw it on the menu. Pleased to say they were delicious and seasoned well.
Its open space, lovely ambiance, friendly staff and well deserved high rating makes this restaurant a must try!

If you’re ever out with a group of family or friends and are feeling quite hungry I recommend trying the Chef’s Platter for Two+. This was definitely worth the wait even though it did take around 20-30 minutes. The seafood offered tasted fresh and the variety offered felt limitless.
If you’re deciding to come during the weekends they don’t take reservations and serve on a first-in best dressed basis so be prepared to wait around for up to 20-30 minutes during peak service time.
Would definitely want to come back to try their other menu items but best to come during less busier times.

Amazing service, outstanding food and great atmosphere! Was passing by the area and was unsure on what to eat. Saw this place and was a bit worried about the price but it was surprisingly more than worth it.
Decided to pop in at 3pm. Lazy Sunday afternoon. Wasn’t too crowded as it was after the lunch rush. We had the mussels in a pot and one of the specials which was a Vietnamese inspired salad with deep fried barramundi. Fish was as good as it looked, every bite an adventure. Mussels were well cooked and very good. Wished the sauce was a little lighter rather than overly tomato based. Would’ve loved to taste some mussels in the sauce but that’s my opinion. There were 2 slices of toasted sourdough to soak up the goodness. Overall, very good.
Soooo good to have a Tommy Ruff open up in Mordy. Ordered a bit of everything and enjoyed a feed in the park with the family. Can't wait to come back!

A trip down to Mordialloc calls for a beach type meal and what better than the good old fish 'n' chips. Who better to get this from than Tommy Ruff Fish Bar located on Main Street. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome and smiles from the staff who seated us promptly and took our order promptly. They even checked in to see if everything was ok with our meals which you don't usually get from a fish 'n' chip shop.
We ordered the Southern Fried Fish 'n' Chips $18.50, Atlantic Salmon $22.9 and a pineapple juice $6.0. Fresh & juicy produce is what we can describe it as but we must say, some proper seasoning would've gone a long way on both the fish and the chips. As fresh as it was, the meal would've been just that much better if it had some proper seasoning but other than that, it was very much enjoyable.
The decor and presentation of the restaurant was very well thought through and made you really feel like you were on a boat or a pier eating freshly caught produce straight to your plate. Combined with the hospitality of the staff along with its location, Tommy Ruff delivered with a gold star. This will definitely be a place to visit again and again for quality fish 'n' chips... as long as they sort out their seasoning. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find.
Food was mostly good. Value for money is fantastic. New location looks great. Service is very friendly but too disorganised. Now that they are growing they really need to nail down things like food getting to the table within a reasonable amount of time and the waitresses knowing what has/hasn’t arrived from the order. We checked out there new location. They just moved a few doors up. The fitout is nice. The service is friendly and the food yum!! Fish tacos are the best and everything on the platter was well enjoyed.
Yesterday my mother and I were treated to quite an incredible experience at Tommy Ruff Fish Bar.
It’s the kind of service you want from a restaurant, but never seem to get.
And for that I commend the people that hired the lovely ladies and service team that makes this establishment work so brilliantly.

Firstly it needs to be mentioned the customer service is brilliant from young blonde waitress with the braces. Her service is a 5/5. The food was nice and tasty and I wouldn’t complain about the salt and pepper calamari with brown rice and Greek salad, they even use soft feta instead of hard cubes. Chips and potato cakes are good to .

So much better than the standard fish and chip shops in any of the surrounding suburbs which I always find greasy and poor quality. Never had anything bad here and I've been at least ten times over the last year - family favourite.
I've tried many dishes here - I would recommend everything from the fish tacos, the fish burger, plain fried flake to the asian and the spanish grilled fish dishes.
Amazing food and great atmosphere...we had the soft shell crab burgers and shared a serve of onion rings.... and must say they are the best onion rings in Melbourne, the burgers were a hit too!
A perfect place to grab takeaway food for a nice picnic on the beach- while watching the sunset! It gets pretty crowded so wait time was quite long, but because of the beach side location it's not too hard to past the time while waiting for your food. My partner and I ordered garlic prawns, teriyaki salmon, calamari and sweet potato chips. The food was delicious and well worth the price and wait time. Staff was also very friendly and helpful when we asked for menu recommendations.

If you love the beach and good food, then this place will be perfect for you! The Tommy Ruff in Mordialloc has the best location with only a couple of minutes walk to the beach around the corner. We have been twice to this restaurant over the past two weeks and can't get enough of it. Food of course was on point and their fish burgers was epic. Highly recommend trying their onion rings as well! We will be back again soon!
After seeing so many posts on Instagram of this place we similarly decided to give it a go!
We shared a few entrees such as the school prawns and mussels, potato cakes and whitebait. The standout by far were the school prawns which were a burst of flavour!
The platters are great value for money with the seafood being super fresh and there being heaps of variety to suit all tastes.

This is my fav place to go before I take an evening stroll on the beach. Came here four times already. Each time was awesome. This time I ordered the special Japanese marinaded ocean trout on warm sesame soba noodles and the fish was honestly the best I’ve had in awhile. Just melted in my mouth. Staff are very friendly and prompt. Place looked really quirky and all fun vibes.

I love that this little place is so local and located right next to Mordialloc beach! Just a short walk to and from the beach and fish and chips 🍟 🐠 being the ultimate summer dinner, you can’t go wrong with Tommy Ruff! I just had my fish grilled with chippies and salad 🥗 to the side which was a fantastic way of getting back to basics and enjoying! I didn’t feel sick or heavy afterwards and was ready to head back to the beach! Generally fish and chips is a bit oily/greasy for my tummy but this is honestly going to be my normal go-to when it’s hot and we cannot be bothered cooking! ✨ Absolutely A+ staff as well, super friendly and attentive!
Second time visiting. First time we got the rod pack which included a range of seafood. The calamari,scallops and king prawns were delicious. This time we got the seafood chowder which was pretty different. Tasted a lot healthier than your typical chowder.

Had an excellent meal here last night. Very busy place but they've got a huge team of staff, well trained to cope with the crowds. We sat opposite the open kitchen. There were 10 people preparing food, really organized and professional. The fish was fresh, cooked perfectly and delicious. Great menu. Looking forward to working our way through it. My friend had the Grilled Atlantic Salmon and I had Teriyaki Salmon Skewers with Salad and Chips. She enjoyed her meal and I would definitely go back for mine. This is kind of irrelevant but our favorite moment was the water jug. Yeah, the FISH water jug that sounds like the ocean when you put it to your ear... We must've looked weird, Yolo.

The young man behind the counter had a huge welcoming smile when we walked in on a perfect sunny Thursday afternoon. I took note that all the tables were nearly full despite being a later lunch slot mid-week. He explained that there would be table service and signalled us to sit at the table for two by the window. Despite the table being quite close to the next, this was a great spot to see all the action in the restaurant and passers by. It was a little strange after that because a couple of waiters kept walking by and neither took our order. We got up and helped ourseleves to our own drinks as well. It was 5-10mins until a young lady served us. A slow start but after that, the service was fine. Food didn't take too long, they checked in with us mid-meal, and a friendly chat upon leaving.

We came here specifically for the Platter for 2+ and had high hopes. We were both pretty hungry so didn't hesitate when we later realised people usually order this for lunch if there is a group of 3. We were even moved to a larger table in the back because they probably weren't expecting the two of us to order the platter, ha! Basket of chips came out first - quite small if you were expecting a larger serve. They were cooked perfectly and we had faith this amount would be plenty once eaten with the rest of the platter. Not long after.. 《《BOOM》》, it's like my Insta feed came to life infront of me. The platter was perfectly laid out, glistening seafood in various forms, all looking picture perfect in their own right. Poor hubby had to wait an excruciating 5 mins while the camera ate first!
Highlights:
- Oysters were nice and creamy, vinegarette not overpowering
- Salt & pepper calamari was deeeelish! Light crisp coating and flavoursome soft flesh inside
- Fish tacos with salsa were YUM! One of the better ones I've had
- Salmon skewer...OMG! It was naturally sweet and just melted, thoroughly enjoyed it
Fish burger also gets a great mention but this would've worked better with soft shell crab by breaking up all the fish on the platter and less batter required.
Lowlights:
- The grilled white fish looked moist and like it was seasoned well however ours was a little over-cooked as we'd like. Especially noticeable after eating perfectly cooked salmon and fish tasty fish wings.
- Scallop skewers could've also been more juicer
The inclusion of sauces were also appreciated. The salsa verde on the grilled fish would've been better served on the side for those that don't favour it.
For just over $70, it was happiness on a platter in my book. People comparing to regular fish & chip shop prices will of course be disappointed and should stick to their local.

Great vibe in here and they've done well to keep it relaxed but still on trend. It makes you feel like you're on a "beachside summer holiday" in here and I love that. The outdoor tables are a popular choice and fill up quickly, there are a reasonable number of tables inside for both small or larger groups however the best in terms of space and decor would be the back in my opinion.
KID FRIENDLY: Yes - high chair, kids menu, ample space particularly in rear dining room, outdoor/sidewalk tables
Very delicious and fresh fish and chips.
Good atmosphere.
Grilled or fried fish are both prepared perfectly.
Only reason losing a few points is it is expensive for Fish and chips.
Tommy Ruff Fish bar had always been a favourite of ours, and recently my family and I have started eating at their Mordialloc location. They’re located on the busy strip in Mordialloc, and it’s always buzzing here. Even though there’s a lot of car parking available, you may have to occasionally camp for a bit in order to get a spot. Turning off on the smaller side streets, parking is plentiful and generally not too hard to find a spot. The best thing is that the parking is FREE! Considering they’re putting meters everywhere these days, really can’t complain.
Came for lunch, ordered the asian grilled fish with rice and salad. Pretty decent for the price. And tasty really nice and fresh too. The meals came out pretty quickly after ordering at the table.
Took the fish and chips down to the beach and couldn't have been more happier. The food was packed perfectly to avoid the need of taking extra plates and kept warm. Very fresh and rates great. They haven't got their fame in Melbourne for no reason.
Looking at it you would think it is a local fish n chip shop in the heart of Mordialloc, however it is very different! This place is always busy so I would recommend getting there early especially in the summer. The food is always fresh tasting and have a great range of salads that are all amazing ( i have tried them all) and service is fantastic too. If you are in the area definitely try Tommy Ruff because you will not be disappointed!
One of the go to fish n chips places for us. We’ve been to the one at Elsternwick which was awesome as well. We fell in love with their super salad which has quinoa, kale, cabbage and a bunch of their stuff. The batter on the fishes are nice and crispy but not too thick and oily. Wife usually gets the grilled version which is also delicious. Fish taco and school of prawns are a must order dish too! Can’t go wrong with it, just need to wait depending on when and which one you go.
Went for lunch today . Very friendly table service , delicious and fresh food . Oh and the ice cream sandwich they sell in store are fantastic ! Must try 😁 we had the prawn skewer , calamari ,hope to come back to try other dishes on the menu ❤️
